  • Painting Abstracts: Ideas, Projects and

Search Press Ltd Painting Abstracts: Ideas, Projects and

Book SynopsisClear, challenging and inspiring, this book contains instructions for 65 abstract paintings that you can get to work on straight away, with no previous experience. All the basic information relating to picture elements, composition, theme and design is provided at the start of the book, together with an exploration of the meaning of abstract painting, and its importance as a means of self-expression and creativity. Rather than providing step-by-step instructions, each of the exercises consists of information on method, materials, technique, composition, imagery and structure which will direct you to the finished piece while at the same time allowing your creativity to flow.Trade ReviewWinter 2016 Abstract painting is one of life's little mysteries to me, however much I admire and I try I never seem to achieve a satisfactory abstract acceptable maybe but not good. This book gives indicators on approaches to abstract. There are 50 exercises which with a little thought by using gutta, soy wax, dyes, silk tops, and applying scraps of rough textured silk fabrics to smooth Habotai interesting results can be achieved. I would love this for my own collection. This is using 'play' constructively to promote your own individual style. * International Journal of the Guild of Silk Painters *March 09 I’ve always been interested in good abstract work, but have never seen an instruction book as wonderful as yours…It’s obvious that you have put a lot of love and hard work into this fabulous introduction to this exciting, challenging and always playful expression. You have inspired me to kick-start my painting after many years.-Patricia Cramer, South Africa * Customer *Oct 08 This is a book of ideas for working in a purely abstract style, but also one which suggests ways of seeing and working by means of a series of exercises that introduces 65 different approaches. These exercises are the heart of the book and each one is arranged across two pages with a finished painting on the right and, on the left, notes which explain the artist’s intention and the techniques used to achieve it. Abstraction is as much a state of mind and a way of seeing as anything else. It doesn’t really have techniques of application that are any different to conventional painting. so what it comes down to is structure, shape and colour. As such, it’s a difficult subject to teach - and an even more difficult one to teach through a book - because you either understand the mindset behind it or you don’t. If you look at an abstract and think, “my dog could do better than that”, then it’s a reasonable assumption that this is not for you. If, however, you’re intrigued by the subject but don’t feel you know where to start, then this book will help you a long way towards the end of the road. The simple, straightforward, approach removes pretty much all the mystique and the rigidly standardised layout means that you’ll feel at home pretty quickly and won’t have to spend a long time re-acclimatising yourself every time you turn a page. * Artbookreview.net *Table of ContentsIntroduction The abstract method of painting Why abstract What is abstract Our tools The practical side How does it work Primary picture elements Secondary picture elements composition technique and materials theme and project continuing by yourself

    20 in stock

Book SynopsisThe blank page can be daunting, but 10 Step Drawing: Flowers offers an easy jumping-off point for any doodler to be creative. Featuring illustrated tutorials for drawing 75 irresistible flowers – from exotic wildflowers, to aquatic flora, garden posies and beautiful succulents – every image is fun and easy to replicate in ten simple steps using just a pen and paper. Handy prompts help the reader without giving them dry, prescriptive instructions, and every flower has its own distinctive character. 10 Step Drawing: Flowers is sure to encourage even the most nervous amateur artist to dust off their pen and doodle. Other titles in the series: 10 Step Drawing: Animals.Trade ReviewThis is the companion to Heather Kilgour’s 10 Step Drawing Animals (also found on this site). Just like its fellow you can learn how to draw seventy-five beautiful flowers and arrangements in just ten steps with this useful primer. Each flower is shown being constructed a stage at a time on one or two pages taking you from a mere shape or line to a finished colored drawing. First the introduction explains how the process works and tells you what you need to buy and why. Pencils or paints are the suggested mediums for adding color, and anybody who is even mildly interested in art or a keen crafter will already own most of what they will need. The book is divided into four sections comprising blooms, blossoms, botanicals and displays. Blooms are your basic garden favorites, blossoms can be found on trees in spring, botanicals are more unusual items (actually rather a mixed bag) and displays are bouquets and wreaths. Even a drawing novice can easily get the line drawing right; adding color is trickier and a true beginner will probably want to purchase a basic book in their chosen medium. This is, after all, a book about drawing not coloring and it certainly succeeds in showing how simple it is to draw a line drawing of a flower. One thing to help you with the color aspect is the row of circles at the bottom of each page showing the colors used, which is a nice touch. Choose from garden flowers like foxgloves, a water lily, rose and bluebell or depict cherry blossom, crab apple blossom or magnolias. Draw botanicals such as aloe vera, pitcher plants and Christmas cactus or sketch a festive wreath, wild flower bouquet or a bunch of spring bulbs. Each flower has a short piece about it and to help you choose your project there is a list of contents at the front. If you want to learn to draw flowers from scratch this is a good place to do so. -- Rachel Hyde * myshelf.com *This new series presents what we might call a quick route to drawing. Each of the 75 projects includes nine outline stages, plus a final one where the colour is added. What is most useful is the simple shapes with which each begins. If you’re new to drawing, getting this right can be the hardest part and represents the foundations on which the finished result will stand or fall. Beginners should find the process reassuring and the routines easy to follow and get to grips with. The method and results are really quite attractive. -- Henry Malt * Artbookreview.net *These guides provide a simple introduction for the absolute beginner. By using a standard way of working and a repeated template, they help to ensure reliable results every time and a level of success that can only be encouraging. * The Artist, April 2019 *Table of ContentsPrelims: 5pp Introduction: 2pp The Drawings: 120pp Indexes and Acknowledgments: 1pp

  • The Oil Painter's Bible: An Essential Reference

Search Press Ltd The Oil Painter's Bible: An Essential Reference

    20 in stock

Book SynopsisOil paint is such a responsive and versatile medium that no two painters need use it in exactly the same way, and since its invention in Renaissance times it has never lost its popularity with artists. Amateurs also find it appealing, both because it is enjoyable to use and because mistakes can be so easily rectified. This compact book explains all the materials, techniques and different approaches to painting with oils. Step-by-step sequences show how to paint a range of themes, from still life to portraits and landscapes, with advice on more difficult subjects. There are also suggestions for presenting your finished paintings and how to go about getting your work seen and exhibited.Trade ReviewI received this book from Search Press in return for an unbiased and honest review. It's been a long time since I dabbled in Oils so this book was a nice refresher for the returning amaturer oil painter. The book is aimed primarily at those who are new to oil painting and Amateurs' rather than the professional Oil painter. I found it well laid out and easy to understand. It talks about the paints themselves and how amatur and professional paints are different in shade and amount of pigment they contain. It covers tools required and how to use them and also how the paint itself can look different depending on the painting surface. I was impressed with how well it covers mixing colours for skin tone, sunsets, water and skies to name but a few. It is certainly a book that is well worth purchasing for anyone wishing to start or improve their skills with oil paints, Art students who need a backup or just those wishing to learn more techniques than the mere basics. * Laura Mackenzie-Hawkins *A great guide for the beginner in oils I received this book from Search Press in return for an unbiased and honest review. I am a long-term painter in oils, so I was very interested in seeing how this book came across. Subtitled “An essential reference for the practising artist”, this book is aimed primarily at those new to oil painting, although the more experienced will also find parts of the book useful. This is a 2016 reprint of the original 2005 edition. I’m not sure whether there have been any updates to the original but the book does not feel out of date in any way. The book is about A5 in size and printed on high quality paper with easy to read text. A two-page introduction gives a well presented precis of the contents and how they are organised. There are four main section to the book: Materials, Colour, Techniques and Subjects. I shall deal with each in turn. Many of the subjects include an analysis and tips for the artist. Materials Straight away, the author highlights the difference between artist and student quality paint and the benefits of buying only the tubes you need, rather than a boxed set. The different types of brush shape and composition are well covered, with illustrations to back-up the text. There are sections on painting knives, surfaces, painting mediums and surface preparation. Each is well presented in just a couple of pages with good quality supporting illustrations. This section will be of great use to the beginner, with the occasional snippet for the more experienced. Colour Making sense of the multitude of colours available can be a daunting task for all of us. However, the author, Marylin Scott, presents the various aspects of the colour wheel and the differing characteristics of the various colours in a clear and methodical way. Once again, the accompanying illustrations are of a high quality and support the text extremely well. Advice is given on choosing an initial palette, with examples of the mixes that could be achieved from the selection. The author goes on to cover the mixing of greens, browns etc, with pictorial examples of how one might use the mixes. Techniques One term often bandied around is “Fat over Lean”. Marlin gets straight to the point and illustrates how the technique is used, why it is used and the results. An excellent description in my view and one that could be of use to many painters. The section continues with basic and advanced subjects. Basic techniques cover painting Alla Prima (and what that means), blending, building up, underdrawing, brushwork, dry brush, hard and soft edges, coloured grounds (including what we men by a ‘ground’), we-in-wet, wet-on-dry, and corrections. Advanced techniques cover glazing, impasto, knife painting, finger painting, sponge painting, scumbling, tonking, scraping back, sgraffito, texturing, underpainting, imprinting, masking, mono printing, and mixed media. Useful hints and tips The author discusses the various materials used to create a painting, how to create darks and adjust perceived colours, preparing a surface, and painting on location. Subjects In this section, Marylin considers a variety of subjects: landscape, still life, buildings etc., with supporting tutorials to follow. Each item has well presented examples of the subject being discussed, helping the reader understand the reasoning behind the text. Conclusion I found this book easy to read and quite interesting. I certainly found snippets that I will refer to and use in my own work. A member of my art group has just started to use oils and I can see that this book would be an extremely useful resource for her. Find a place for this book on your shelves; it will repay your investment. * David Raison *I am an amateur painter and had recently taken up oil paints. I was struggling a bit so switched back to acrylics. This book has made me look at returning to oils as there are many tips, examples and lessons that I have not seen elsewhere. For example I was surprised to see finger painting as I have never encountered this before in any books. The book is well laid out and the content is clear; set out in four comprehensive sections. I particularly like the colour chapter on “Mixing and Using Colours” as I struggle with colours and looking at this I am sure it will be a great help. There is a page on Useful Extra Colours that I found very interesting but feel it could have been expanded on as it was very brief. I was given this book by Search Press Art to provide a review of the book within one week of receipt so I have not been able to use the book on a practical level but am looking forward now to returning to oil painting and using it as it is loaded with useful, interesting information. All in all a nice little bible. * Grace McCarron *

Search Press Ltd 10 Step Drawing: People: Draw 30 People in 10

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisIf you love drawing people but don’t know where to start, this is the book for you! 10 Step Drawing: People will help you turn simple lines or shapes into lifelike images in just 10 steps. There are instructions for the individual elements of the face and body, as well as complete faces and people. With advice on basic equipment and colouring techniques, each drawing includes colour palettes so readers can easily find the right tones for their drawing. Learning to draw has never been so simple!Trade ReviewI found this book to be extremely helpful in learning to draw people. It is easy to draw what you think you see rather than what you actually see and whilst this book is encouraging you to draw people from simple shapes, it does give you the insight to take this new understanding of basic shapes to apply to real life drawing. I have struggled with drawing people accurately, so I found the use of simple shapes and explanation of proportion a really useful tool. I was impressed by how, with only a few simple lines, a concise drawing was created. My children also really enjoyed the premise of the book and I will be using it with them. Overall, I think this is a great book to encourage people to start drawing and I believe it has the ability to instil confidence in them so that they are able to move forward and draw more and more. The book also dips in to the use of colour and tone, explained in clear terms, even using a method to draw lines to explain where shading should go. So, in summary, a great book to encourage people into drawing people but may not be for everyone. -- Sarah Buckingham * Amazon *Part of the 10 Step Drawing series, 10 Step Drawing: People uses simple lines and shapes to make lifelike images - starting with just one line and building this up in ten steps. The book includes individual elements that make up the face, as well as complete faces and people. Information is also provided on basic colour techniques, as well as a guide to creating the right skin tones. * Leisure Painter *With this handy primer you can learn how to draw what is possibly the most difficult thing – people! There are thirty different men and women in here to tackle, as well as facial features and body parts front, side and three quarter view. They are all generic, attractive studies but are easier to undertake for a beginner than those with more character. Progress from a simple shape adding details and end up with something that looks recognizably human – it is a good way to learn and is easier than you might think. This book mostly avoids any of those jumps a lot of beginner art books have where a basic line drawing becomes a fully coloured and shaded piece of art with no steps in between. These have all been added before the colour appears in the final stage so some good results are possible even if you are a total beginner. The brief introduction explains how the book works and suggests how to colour your drawings and the palette shown with each one will help choose the shades you use. I was impressed, as this book really does take much of the mystery out of drawing people and I would recommend it to anybody who wants to learn. -- Rachel A Hyde * myshelf.com *Table of ContentsIntroduction 6 How to use this book 7 Facial Features & Faces Front view Side view Female faces 44 Male faces 56 Three-quarter view Female faces 68 Male faces 78 Body Parts & Figures Female proportions 84 Male proportions 86 Easy standing woman 104 Standing party girl 106 Chic standing woman 108 Crouching woman 110 Sitting girl 112 Cool female pose 114 Easy standing boy 116 Male standing pose 118 Skater boy 120 Male guitar player 122 Perching man 124 Leaning man 126 About the artist 128 Acknowledgements 128

A highly regarded artist, writer and tutor has released a new book detailing his techniques and ideas for painting his beloved landscape throughout the year. David Bellamy, who lives in Builth Wells, has written Landscapes through the Seasons in Watercolour, published by Search Press. A revised and expanded edition of David Bellamy's Winter Landscapes in Watercolour, David looks at each season in detail and explores the challenges and surprises they present to the landscape artist. In the fully illustrated book, David explores, through painting, the beautiful landscapes across the UK including those in his own area in Powys. David said: "Many of my books include scenes of Powys, and my new book has quite a number.” "Of all the counties in Britain, Powys is probably the least well-known for its outstanding beauty, outside the Brecon Beacons national park boundaries, and it's a great privilege to live here and record its glorious scenery." Through Landscapes through the Seasons, David shares his techniques for creating seasonal effects, such as rendering hoar frost on trees, creating realistic looking foliage, limiting the colour palette to create mood and how to give your painting misty and atmospheric impact. David also lays out what the best materials to use are in a variety of different situations and the varying ways the artist can handle a paint brush to give a desired effect. A full-time artist and author, David has written over 15 books illustrated with his paintings, and eight DVDs on his techniques in watercolour have been produced by APV films. David paints mainly in watercolour, specialising chiefly in mountain, wild coast, Arctic, and desert scenery. He is also currently working on a book about the Middle East. David said: "My sketching adventures have led to encounters with polar bears and walrus, among other creatures in remote fjords, falling over a crocodile in East Africa, taking painting groups into the Himalayas and the Andes, and exploring deep into the Sahara Desert.” “Even though they smell a bit and make rather rude noises, the bull walrus is one of the most considerate models I have ever sketched. In Nepal, one student managed a superb watercolour sketch of Everest only to get it eaten by a yak as it was drying on a wall” “It has been a great privilege to meet so many wonderful people in so many of these wild locations. Powys has also given me many interesting moments, especially when sketching underground in excruciatingly challenging positions." Through his painting and writing, David also hopes to bring about greater awareness of the threats to the natural environment and is particularly active in conserving wild areas. David also occasionally runs painting courses at Caer Beris Manor Hotel in Builth Wells but has not been able to run any this year due to the pandemic. The events usually attract people from many parts of the world including Japan and the USA. Locally, David exhibits paintings at the Ardent Gallery in Brecon. -- Luke Williams * Brecon & Radnor Express *Here the popular artist and best-selling author David Bellamy looks at each season in detail and shares with us how to tackle landscapes when faced with their many challenges. Specific techniques are explained in detail, such as how to create musty effects or render hoar frost on trees, and there's useful advice on composition, making the most of your subject and portraying atmosphere in watercolour. The Moors in Summer, Winter Mountains, After the Spring Shower and a Late Autumn Waterfall are just some of the subjects included in this eminently practical book by a master artist. * Leisure Painter *The paintings were lovely, just looking at the artwork was a pleasure. I found the instructions good, the instructions and serial progress photos should make it possible to produce something satisfactory to even a first time watercolour painter. Overall pleased with this book -- Connie Kiernan * Amazon *The idea of a book about painting the seasons is not new, but rarely has it been handled so well, and with such relevance as here. It is perhaps such an obvious theme that subject matter often becomes second rather than first thought, and previous books have lacked focus as a result. The arrangement of this entrancing guide will come as no surprise, though the start point of summer perhaps points to an intended earlier publication date. The material for winter is adapted from the 2014 David Bellamy's Winter Landscapes in Watercolour, but is integrated nicely, pointing to the care that has gone into the writing and production. There are plenty of examples and demonstrations. David explains how shapes, light, colour and atmosphere all contribute to the look and feel both of the work itself and the ways in which it needs to be approached and presented in a painting. -- Henry Malt * Leisure Painter - January 2021 *This is a book that'll last you all year round. David demonstrates not just the broader vistas, but quiet corners and details such as trees, buildings, waterfalls, animals, trees and flowers. You'll discover how the shapes of natural subjects change with each turn of the season, and David provides examples for everything, as well as full demonstrations that show how images develop in their own individual ways. This is a thorough guide in the company of a popular and experienced teacher who makes working with watercolour a delight. * SAA *This is an expanded version of David’s Winter Landscapes which appeared in 2014. It’s therefore no surprise that this is the season that gets the greatest coverage. Overall, on a back-of-the-envelope calculation, about two-thirds is new material. For a ten quid paperback, that’s not exactly daylight robbery if you have the previous book (which, as one of David’s super-fans, you will). If this is all new to you, be assured that the integration is good and you won’t be able to see the joins. Search Press are very good at this kind of thing and the progress is seamless. The whole thing is sound and well executed, with the demonstrations and overall quality of work fully up to the standard you’d expect from David. So, anyway, this is as thorough a guide to painting outdoors at all times of the year and in all weathers as you could wish. At 96 pages, it’s practically concise, but there’s no wasted space and it feels a lot larger. David isn’t just a great painter, he’s a great distiller of information and the way it’s presented. Do you get the impression I’m telling you to buy this? Good. -- Henry Malt * Artbookreview.net *Table of ContentsIntroduction 6 Materials 8 Basic brush techniques 12 Summer 14 Lakeland Waterfall 20 Moor in Summer 30 Autumn 36 Late Autumn Waterfall 42 Winter 48 Winter Mountains 56 Farm in Snow 71 Spring 78 After the Spring Shower 82 Planning paintings 88 Further techniques 92 Index 96

The Innovative Artist series provides a unique insight into the methods and materials used by leading contemporary artists who are pushing the boundaries of their art. Through numerous examples of the author’s work alongside practical demonstrations, each book provides a fascinating exploration of the artist’s creative process that will inspire the reader to move forward on their own artistic journey. Abstracts and Mixed Media is aimed at artists who wish to explore the possibilities offered by mixed media in new and impressive ways. Helen's love of colour and experimentation is carried through layers of imagery and texture with a gloriously vibrant mix of traditional and imaginative new techniques. It is the experimental combination of these methods that gives each painting its unique glowing quality. Artists will discover different ways of mixing and blending paint with unusual materials, collage techniques, fun printing methods, mark-making with found objects, and original ways to incorporate homemade stencils and stamps into their work. Helen leads the reader through her exciting range of techniques using charcoal, gesso, oil pastels, wet and dry media, printing and mark-making materials, and collage.Trade ReviewThis is a truly glorious book! Packed with inspiration and rich illustrations Helen’s passion for mixed media shines through on every page. As well as the demonstrations and stunning examples of finished works, the content is organised under four broad areas: The Art of the Abstract, Materials and Tools, Mixing the Media, Varnishing and Completing. Within these key areas there are pages of detailed examples, sharing inspiration, how to play with materials, and the most creative sources of mark-making; how just by looking around your home you can find so many items to use e.g. forks, pastry cutters, toy building bricks, combs, bottle tops, sponges and so much more! Helen adopts the same approach with print making, from creating stencils, to making your own stamps, again using household items. But it is the richness of colour that makes this book such a delight and the freedom of using mixed media in such innovative and delightful ways. As a source of inspiration, The Innovative Artist: Abstracts and Mixed Media is outstanding, Helen has a created a book which will encourage experimentation by artists of all ages and abilities. We absolutely loved it! Highly recommended! -- Kaye Thorne * EscapeLearnCreate.co.uk *A must-have for anyone interested in creating abstract art. I am new to art and found this book invaluable. The explanations of colour, composition, design and interpretation were easy to follow and the processes and techniques of collating, stamping, mark making and creating texture have inspired me to have a go at all of these. Well worth the (very reasonable) cover price. -- Diane Hicklin * Amazon Customer Review *Mixed-media artist Kaminsky specializes in exploring materials and techniques as she works through her own journey as a self-taught artist, and here shares some of the possibilities she’s investigated so far. Starting with an overview of colour, composition, design, interpretation, and process, Kaminsky explains the underpinnings of her work, with an approach designed to suit those just getting started or to serve as context for more- experienced artists. As is fitting for the variety of media represented, a significant portion of the book is devoted to materials, tools, and an assortment of techniques including collage, veiling, lifting, transparency, printing, and mark making. The author’s artwork is featured throughout, and while she uses a variety of techniques, her art style is recognizable, with bold, layered colours that are sustained through a variety of subject matter. For readers wishing to explore a range of techniques and enjoy the inspiration of a skilled artist’s work, this book will provide instruction as well as a jumping-off point for their own artistic journeys. -- Anne Heidemann * Booklist, February Issue *The Innovative Artist is a series from Search Press that aims to bring to the reader a selection of artists who are at the forefront of media or techniques. Helen Kaminsky is a first-time author whose work in abstract covers a wide variety of techniques, media and styles. Interest in abstraction has taken off in recent years and has been served by a progression of excellent books that are, however, generally basic in their approach. This is the first that starts from an avowedly higher level and assumes that its audience will have an understanding of the basic working methods. This does not mean that explanations are missing or skimped and there are plenty of examples, exercises and demonstrations that you'd expect from a publisher of instructional books. If you're serious about abstract painting, this is a book that will, in return, take you seriously and fulfil your requirements. -- Henry Malt * The Artist *Part of the Innovative Artist series, which pushes the boundaries of art, professional artist, Helen Kaminsky, explores the creative possibilities of mixed media, showing how layers of imagery and texture can add unique qualities to your work. Areas covered include collage techniques, printing methods, mark making with found objects, homemade stencils and stamps as well as a mix of wet and dry media. Demonstrations throughout the book will allow you to follow Helen's processes to achieve her glowing paintings. * Leisure Painter *With the popularity of abstract painting showing no sign of abating (there was a time when books on it were a drag on the market), there has for some time been space for a book that comes between the simple project-based approach and the more academic, analytical tomes. And here we have a thoroughly practical book aimed at the serious artist who has mastered the basics and is ready to move on to more advanced techniques and interpretations. Rather than pitching straight into the dual aspects of the book’s title, Helen first deals with abstraction – colour, composition, design and interpretation, with each section having an accompanying demonstration that manages to be straightforward without being annoyingly elementary. This augurs well for the book’s balance between simplicity and taking its subject and its readers seriously. The matter of media is now introduced, with textures, pastes, gels, watercolour, inks and acrylics all coming into the picture – or do I mean mix? This is where things start to get exciting and where the book absolutely justifies its inclusion in the Innovative Artist series. Work here takes the form of examples and shorter exercises because Helen’s aim is to get and help you to develop your own vision and voice. Where project-based books will have you completing the author’s idea of a painting, the intention here is to give you ideas to work off and to spark the imagination. Helen deals with a broad and complex subject, but the book never feels intimidating or inaccessible, but rather draws you in, eager to find out more. An added bonus is that the binding is sewn rather than glued, which is unusual outside hardbacks. As a result, the book falls open easily in the hands and the pages are easy to view and read. -- Henry Malt * Artbookreview.net *This thorough and carefully explained guide examines not just the technical aspects but also what abstraction is and how it speaks to both the artist and the viewer. Helen looks at sources of inspiration as well as the creative process where ideas are translated into shapes, forms and colours. * Paint & Create, March 2023 *This is a truly glorious book! Book SynopsisFollowing on from his successful book Watercolour Trees, Terry presents a new edition of this award-winning title, and includes a great selection of clear, detailed step-by-step demonstrations along with extra tips to show how to paint beautiful trees quickly and easily. He teaches how to paint an impression of trees, rather than showing how reproduce each leaf, and illustrates the importance of understanding shapes, perspective, light and shade, and the way foliage changes with the seasons. This is a book for all landscape artists whatever their skill levels, and anyone who wants to learn more about painting trees whether they are magnificent in their winter habitat, gloriously bedecked in spring foliage, splendid in their summer raiment or stunning when their leaves turn to russet reds and spun golds.Trade ReviewDec 12 If you really struggle with watercolour but are still persevering against all odds, try this book. There are 24 step-by-step demonstrations showing not only trees but landscapes as well. You'll be able to choose scenes from all seasons. There is a complete guide to painting trees in all seasons, then incorporating them into the landscape. Terry guides you through the process showing his palette, brushes and techniques. This book used material previously published as Terry Harrison's Watercolour Trees. * Karen Platt Yarnsandfabrics.co.uk/crafts *Jan 13 Even with all the dire predictions of bugs and disease, the totally bare landscape is unlikely to be with us any time soon. Trees, by their size and presence, are one of the defining features of any scene and getting them wrong can mar a painting as surely as badly painted features can turn a portrait into a caricature. Terry is a slick presenter and he starts the book with ways of creating simple shapes that look immediately convincing. His own range of brushes comes into it, of course, but in an understated way, and you have to admit that they’re rather useful. And anyway, you may already have the basic shapes in your kit, so there’s no hard sell here. The obvious next stage is trees through the seasons and Terry provides quick demonstrations that show a variety of compositions, such as an ivy-clad trunk beside a winter lane, that give you a chance to get your bearings. Moving on (the title of the next chapter), you get specific varieties. Even here, the emphasis isn’t on the details but rather the shapes and colours and how to present them as adjuncts to the main composition. This section is something of a tour de force as Terry underplays his hand masterfully, using the subject of the book as a foil to the main work. After all this, you might be surprised to find the final section of the book being called Trees in The Landscape. Although that seems to be what we’ve seen already, here Terry paints some really quite ambitious scenes where the trees really are the main feature, yet are still not portraits. He works in a variety of conditions and demonstrates clear light, dappled shade and misty recession throughout the year. There’s a lot here and it’s genuinely surprising just how much Terry manages to wring out of his subject without any sense that he’s stretching either it or himself to fill the 128 pages. * Artbookreview.net *Jan 13 If you paint landscapes, sooner or later you're going to have to paint trees. Even if the worst predictions of pests and disease turn out to be right, bare, flat landscapes are unlikely to be a feature of the landscape any time soon. Books on trees are not exactly two a penny but, after a period when they were thin on the ground, several have come along in recent years, although they have tended to assume you want to paint trees as a subject rather than as a necessary adjunct to a wider view. Terry Harrison hits the nail right on the head with this guide. This isn't a book about how to paint trees, but how to paint trees in a landscape. It's full of the sort of good ideas that are Terry's stock-in-trade. Using his range of brushes (and if you don't want to buy them, you may find you already have suitable alternatives), he starts by showing you how to create realistic and believable shapes quickly and easily. If there's a wood on the horizon, this will take the mystery out of putting it there. Get further into the book, and you'll find advice on dealing with individual species, which becomes important if they're a foreground feature. You'll also find demonstrations showing trees in a variety of situations, including woodlands and landscapes, as well as mountain and river scenes. In fact, just about everything you could want. * Paint *Mar 13 Trees are such an important part of the landscape that an ability to paint them successfully will help you progress with the subject faster. Not only are they essential to describe the atmosphere of a landscape, a well painted tree, whether it be a magnificent spreading oak or the bare branches of a tree set against a winter's sky, can add interest to a scene lacking in a focal point. Here Terry promises to show you how it's done 'with a few tricks and the right brushes'. A section on materials and equipment is swiftly followed by a description of the palette Terry uses, in particular his colour mixes for creating the perfect hue for sunlit green, country olive, autumn shades and burnt shadow for example – colours you will be using time and again in your paintings of trees. This is followed by a useful chapter on using photographs, and combining photographs to make a better composition. Terry then moves on to techniques, including information on what brush to use for the effect you are after, how to use masking fluid, paint trunks and branches and, finally, foliage. The main body of the book is taken up with demonstrations, beginning with a section entitled 'Simple Trees', which describes how to create the impression of trees and helps to build up confidence before moving on to more complex subjects. Included here are trees in each of the seasons. How to paint specific tree species follows, including the cypress, pine, willow and oak tree, amongst others, plus an apple tree in full blossom. Trees in the landscape come next with information on how to place them convincingly in their setting. In total there are 24 step-by-step demonstrations, including an avenue of trees, a bluebell wood and trees in a winter landscape. Each of these demonstrations is carefully considered to help you build up your confidence and create striking watercolour landscapes. * Leisure Painter, The *Mar 13 Magnificent objects in their own right; trees help to provide perspective within a landscape. Getting them right can make all the difference to a painting. In this book Terry sets out to show just how trees can be painted and used effectively within a landscape. A variety of techniques are demonstrated such as painting trunks and foliage. There are some interesting hints too - use kitchen paper with masking fluid to dab on trees to give the impression of snow! He then goes on to show how some of the most popular trees can be painted such as an apple tree in blossom, horse chestnut, weeping willow, silver birch and an oak tree. The subject of setting trees within a landscape or season is also covered, with many practical ideas on how to use them and how to achieve the best effect. All in all, this is a very useful, practical book which justly deserves a place on any artist's bookshelf to be referred to time and time again. * Monstersandcritics.com *Mar 13 Trees are popular subjects for painting and not many landscapes can do without them. Here is a guide on how to capture their elusive and special qualities with the medium of watercolors. I think Mr Harrison must be the only other person like myself, who does not stretch his paper, but presses it afterwards. Find out how in here along with all the usuals such as what paints to buy in order to paint trees and woods, working with photographs, kitting out your working area and composing a picture. Before you get to the paintings there are many techniques to practice, such as painting skies, leaves, trunks, using various brushes and other products etc. I like the way these are also in staged project form with all the photos and captions that make Search Press books so user-friendly. Next, you will move on with studies of trees through the seasons and different types of tree to practice what you have learnt. Finally, there is the largest section with plenty of paintings to tackle. These are again varied in their seasons, and include a bluebell wood (my favorite), waterside views, a winter scene, a mountain scene and an avenue of trees in autumn. As well as the step-by-step instructions, there are a couple of similar paintings discussed afterwards, which makes for a nice touch. You can actually learn the mysteries of painting trees in here, which makes it such a worthwhile purchase. * Myshelf.com *February 2015 Many books have been written on painting trees, but they mostly concentrate on individual species and on the details of structure and foliage. Terry Harrison's approach is refreshingly different and refreshingly simple: his trees are there because the painting would look naked without them. Terry begins by showing you how to create suitable shapes quickly and easily and he also explains the range of brushes he has developed to help you with this. As the book progresses, you'll move into more detail, such a portraying trees in the different seasons, working up to individual species, which Terry always shows in context - the tree itself is hardly ever the main subject in this book. Settings include woodlands, landscapes, mountains and rivers and you'll see how trees grows differently in each and how to capture just the right shapes and colours every time. * SAA *Table of Contents• Trees are an essential element for any watercolour artist to master, and Terry Harrison provides everything they need to know to paint them the easy way, from simple trees with a few strokes of the brush to fully developed paintings of trees in the landscape. • Eleven beautiful step by step demonstrations and plenty of tips and techniques make painting trees in watercolour achievable. • This book will give confidence to the beginner and will also inspire more experienced artists.

Whether you want to create a Ladybird, Giraffe or immortalise the family pet you will find helpful tips here. The book talks about proportions and the best equipment to use and most animals start with a series of circles. These basic rules will help you recreate everything in the book and give a solid basis for drawing other creatures in different poses. So was it easy? Yes, reasonably so. I armed myself with a set of my son’s pencils and gave myself 30 minutes to see what I could achieve. Three animals later I felt quite proud. See the full review and images here: https://notcompulsory.blogspot.com/2018/07/guest-reviewers-draw-animals-in-10-easy.html?spref=fb * Not Compulsory *Draw seventy-five lifelike animals in just ten steps with this handy primer. Progress from a simple shape adding details and end up with a drawing you can be proud of. The introduction explains why it is simpler than you think to draw in this way, and lists what you need, briefly mentions adding color and how to get the proportions right. The rest of the book is divided into four sections: wild, aquatic, woodland and farm/domestic animals. In here you can find popular creatures like a panda, baby penguin, meerkat, orca and fox as well as more unusual choices like a skunk, walrus, platypus or dung beetle. This is a good book for a beginner because you really can draw some excellent studies of these animals just by following the instructions. Each stage has a short caption explaining what you are doing and before you know it, there is the finished piece. In common with most such books however although a beginner can produce the drawing, you will need more experience and talent to produce the final colored work. To be fair this is a book about drawing, not coloring so if you want to learn how to shade and blend using colored pencils (as the artist has used) you will need to get another book. First you will have fun working through the seventy-five pictures in this one, which I recommend to anybody who wants to learn how to draw animals. -- Rachel Hyde * myshelf.com *These guides provide a simple introduction for the absolute beginner.

Book SynopsisPraise for the previous edition: "The book brings together the work of Margaret Evans, Paul Hardy and Peter Coombs to help you to master the pastel medium. The three artists bring a good balance of work to the book, with Peter Coombs and Paul Hardy covering landscapes and townscapes, while Margaret Evans concentrates on flowers. Sections on using a limited palette, composition, colour mixing and colours for painting flowers, are interspersed with 13 demonstrations accompanied by good, clear step-by-step photographs." - Leisure Painter This is a practical and comprehensive guide for all soft pastel painting enthusiasts, from the beginner to the experienced artist. It uses material from the following titles in the Step-by-Step Leisure Arts series: Painting with Pastels by Peter Coombs, Landscapes in Pastel by Paul Hardy, Flowers in Pastel by Margaret Evans and Light in Pastel by Paul Hardy. Starting with advice on materials, it moves on to pastel basics such as blending, adding tone and using a limited palette. There are sections on landscape painting featuring advice on composition and painting trees and water, capturing light in pastels with tips on colour mixing, and finally flower painting, with additional information on adding water to pastels. Throughout the book, the art of painting in pastels is taught through 13 beautiful, easy to follow step-by-step projects, and each section is accompanied by a selection of inspirational paintings by the three featured artists, in a rich variety of styles. Previously published as 9781844488612.Trade ReviewComplementing the oil-painting book [Oil Painting Step-by-Step] Pastel Painting Step-by-Step... draws on previously published material - this time from the Step-by-Step Leisure Arts Series: Painting with Pastels by Peter Coombs, Landscapes in Pastel by Paul Hardy, Flowers in Pastel by Margaret Evans and Light in Pastel by Paul Hardy. Opening with information on materials, there then follows instruction on basic techniques including blending, adding tone and using a limited palette. There's also advice on specific aspects of painting, such as composition in landscapes, painting trees and water, capturing light and colour mixing for flower painters, Thirteen step-by-step projects are included covering a variety of subjects. * Leisure Painter, March 2020 *Great little book that actually makes working with pastels look realistic. It tells you how to get rid of mistakes and some of the pictures are amazing! Can't wait to give this a go! -- Victoria Easton * Amazon *I found the book very well set out, the way they take you through each piece step-by-step as the title states is very comforting. The book is an invaluable asset to my art equipment. -- Ken Fox * Amazon *This is a fabulous book, it gives great detail and advice. I've found it so helpful and in just over a week my technique is so much better. I would highly recommend this book for both beginners and those who want to master pastel painting. I have many Search Press books and they are all great. -- Anthony Green * Amazon *Nov 12 Always wanted to learn pastel painting? Here's the book for you. See the approach of three different artists and learn from each. Get straight into the basics with Peter Coombs. Use a limited palette to complete a finished step by step painting. Then have a go at a landscape, river or moonlit scene. Paul Hardy introduces more serene landscapes in pastel, including valleys, trees and water, autumn, a seascape and townscape. Margaret Evans looks at portraying flowers in pastel. Each artist includes techniques and information. There are 13 demonstrations in all and over 250 step by step clear photographs supported by galleries of finished paintings. This is useful for beginners upwards. This book has material published previously in four other books. * Karen Platt Yarnsandfabrics.co.uk/crafts *Nov 12 If you want a book to help you develop your technique when painting with pastels, this is definitely the book to choose. A step by step guide, it is extremely comprehensive covering a wide range of styles and techniques. You can learn how to master creating tone, colour blending, composition and perspective. Then there are the individual sections on projects like painting landscapes, seascapes or flowers which give inspiration as well as useful tuition. There are 13 separate demonstrations which can be followed including using photographs and sketches, painting an old tree, a step by step guide to developing atmosphere when painting a moonlit stroll and even painting potted plant. The book links together the skills of three artists who bring their specialist knowledge to each subject covered. An very useful book for both novices and more experienced artists. * Monstersandcritics.com *Jan 13 Based on previously published material, Pastel Painting Step-by-Step brings together the work of Margaret Evans, Paul Hardy and Peter Coombs to help you to master the pastel medium. The three artists bring a good balance of work to the book, with Peter Coombs and Paul Hardy covering landscapes and townscapes, while Margaret Evans concentrates on flowers. Sections on using a limited palette, composition, colour mixing and colours for painting flowers, are interspersed with 13 demonstrations accompanied by good, clear step-by-step photographs. * Leisure Painter, The *Feb 13 Based on four earlier books on the subject by the above authors, this is a comprehensive guide to the art of using pastels. I like the way that what you need to buy and the differences between pastels is dealt with once only at the beginning, leaving out this part from the other three sections. You don’t need as much to take up this aspect of art as most others and there is even a helpful section on working with a limited palette, as well as another on what colors to buy for flower paintings. This is, like most Search Press books, a very hands-on approach with a minimum of theory for its own sake and a maximum of learning through actual painting. The book contains thirteen different projects to work through as well as many other things to try out, enabling even a beginner to get some professional-looking results. Each project tells you what you need and has a good number of stages, each with a short caption telling you what to do next and a photograph showing the picture with the next steps added. It is a great way to learn, and I particularly liked having three different approaches to play with and three different artists to learn from. This way there is less of a chance of slavish copying, and a good look at more than one style in pastel painting. Sometimes I think that compendiums take away too much from the individual books but this is an effective one for the above reasons. An excellent tool for those who want to learn pastel painting, or improve their technique. * Myshelf.com *Feb 13 Written by a team of three experienced artists, this thorough guide exposes the reader to a variety of viewpoints, techniques, subjects and tricks. It covers all the basics of this medium, including materials, color blending, mark making, texture, perspective and composition. Photographs throughout show the authors' working processes, as well as many completed pieces. Readers can follow along with 13 step-by-step pastel painting projects to create landscapes, seascapes, city scenes, floral still lifes, and more. VERDICT: Best for beginner and intermediate artists new to pastels. * Library Journal, USA *Table of ContentsIntroduction Materials Painting with Pastels Landscapes in Pastel Light in Pastel Flowers in Pastel Index

Book Synopsis'This is an extraordinary book.' Review of Jean Haines' Atmospheric Watercolours in The Artist Magazine 'It simply dazzles on the page and makes you want to grab your brushes and get going straight away.' Review of Jean Haines' Atmospheric Watercolours in The Leisure Painter Jean Haines is arguably one of the world’s most accomplished and inspirational artists, and in this, her fifth book, she explores one of her most beloved subjects - flowers. Taking inspiration from her own beautiful garden in the English countryside where she lives, Jean takes you on an artistic journey that not only teaches you how to create gorgeous paintings, but also shares with you the joy to be gained from the simple act of painting flowers. In this beautiful book, Jean explains with passion and enthusiasm how to loosen up your painting style and include just enough detail in your paintings to portray the essence of flowers, bringing them to life on the paper and infusing them with vibrancy and energy. She shares unreservedly the materials and techniques she uses, provides a wealth of expert tips and advice, and guides you step-by-step through numerous studies and projects. Throughout the book there are many glorious examples of Jean’s paintings of a dazzling variety of flowers, providing an abundance of inspiration for artists of all abilities. Jean uses Daniel Smith materials in this book but other materials can be used to achieve similar results. Trade ReviewJean uses watercolour about as loosely as it's possible to do so and her paintings have an almost iridescent quality that celebrates colour, atmosphere and life. Her flowers shimmer in the light and seem almost to possess movement. There are demonstrations, but they are not at the heart of the project - this book is about learning to see and how to communicate beauty and vision. -- The SAA * The SAA Catalogue 19/20 *'Jean is very good at explaining her working methods, so the lessons and demonstrations are admirably clear.' 'The essence of not just flower, but species is retained and you get the sense of a plant growing in the wild, dancing in the breeze and seen with the lack of distinction brought on by distance. When Jean is painting figures, it’s natural to say that she captures character and soul. While that’s not such an obvious factor with flowers, it’s hard not to make the comparison. This is what flowers are about more than what they are.' Read the full review here. -- Henry Malt * Artbookreview.net *Jean Haines just gets better and better. There have been hints for some time of what's here - subjects that appear as if out of a mist, painted with washes that are so wet they're practically tinctures. If the techniques look like magic, the results certainly are. Not everyone is going to want to paint like this. These are flowers as you've never seen them - indistinct semi-abstract shapes and colours that tell you nothing about structure, little about form and everything about appearance. Jean is a very spiritual painter (she's written about using painting as an aid to mindfulness) and this is a book about painting your emotional response to a popular subject she understands perfectly. If flowers have soul, Jeans has captured it. Although there are demonstrations here, they are short, because details of technique are not important. What matters is to understand your subject, and Jean does intimately. -- Henry Malt * The Artist, October 2018 *Already as a child, the artist loved flowers and studied their coloring, the variety of shapes and the seasonal changes. Through intense observation of nature and, of course, through exercises as often as possible, she was able to achieve masterful expressive power in the course of her career. Like any good instructional book, it begins by listing the materials she uses, such as paints, brushes, paper, and other useful things. Many tips about working with neat pigments and water help to understand why Jean Haine's watercolours are so vibrant and expressive. Numerous step-by-step instructions follow arranged according to colours and seasons. The extraordinary feature of this book is the lovingly worded accompanying text which reveals the painter's passion for nature that has grown over many decades. In many exercises, you will perfect the art of omission and abstraction, the harmonious use of colour and learn to add excitement to a picture. Summary: “Atmospheric Flowers” is at the same time a textbook and a relaxing reading book for all art lovers. Especially for the advanced painter, Jean Haines offers an inexhaustible source of inspiration, useful tips and painting instructions. After a thorough study of text and pictures, you will be able to improve and develop your own style. Novices can enjoy very personal text contributions and the variety of lively, expressive watercolours by Jean Haines. -- Nina Hartmann * www.kreativereview.blogspot.com *Jean Haines is an amazing painter. Her watercolours are about as far from representation you can get without venturing into abstraction, yet they capture the essence of her subjects perfectly. These are not flowers for the botanist - theres almost no detail and they appear as if out of the mist, shimmering, even moving in the light. Jean's interest is in colours and shapes and how these can be manipulated to reveal not just the appearance of her subjects but their spirit. These flowers are not specimens on a page but living entities that suprise and delight. It's impossible not to feel uplifted by them. To help you achieve this, Jean includes discussions about her subjects, as well as exercises that help you get to grips with her personal way of working. Book SynopsisA good sketch starts with good bones. Often challenging and overwhelming to sketchers, the fourth book in the Urban Sketching Handbook series uses drawings and simple steps to explain the concepts of perspective in practical and useful ways for on-site sketching. Most books are either too abstract or don't provide enough information that relates to what you actually do when you're out in the busy, wide world about to start a drawing. Where do you start? How do you edit what you see to flatten and shrink it onto your paper? How does perspective work? The Urban Sketching Handbook: Understanding Perspective helps you learn to think like an architect, to draw buildings and spaces by reducing what you see to simple, basic shapes, then adding layers in simple steps, and finally finishing your sketch with detail, tone, and color--in accurate perspective. Full of helpful tips, architect and illustrator, Stephanie Bower even de-constructs sketches to show you how to create them! Once you understand perspective, it will change the way you see the world--you'll see perspective everywhere. Some of the key concepts explored in this volume are: * Basic Terms * Basic Spatial Principles * Types of Perspective * Building a Sketch in Layers * Special Conditions
