    3 in stock

Book SynopsisThey are the best of nights, they are the worst of nights… Bivvying offers a chance to experience a whole new level of immersion in the outdoors, with just a lightweight bag between you and the elements. The Book of the Bivvy provides an informed, humorous, instructive, wry insight into the world of the bivouac, drawing upon Ronald Turnbull's own extensive experience. The book is a half-and-half mix of how to do it and why to do it (or how not to do it and why not to do it). Accounts of bivvybag nights and expeditions, both nice and nasty, are interspersed with practical tips about types of membrane, sites, techniques and minimalist kit. There are stories and anecdotes from all over the UK, plus a few from abroad. The rich and colourful history of the bivvy is also explored in Ronald's own inimitable style, with descriptions of how Diogenes (the Cynic) bivvied under timber and how the Eigerwand was climbed only through improved bivvying technique. The Book of the Bivvy is a celebration of back-to-basic camping, the perfect antidote to our fast-paced, comfort-based modern life. Honest and entertaining, there is every chance it will inspire you to find a remote hilltop, roll out your bag and watch the sunset.Table of ContentsMap key 1 Introduction Bag for life Bivvy night 1: Snowdon 2 Primitive bivvy Bivvy night 2: Peigne and suffering Problems of the polybag Plastic bag for pleasure purposes Polybag facts 3 Bivvy history Rude people enquire into futurity Nights on the Eiger Bivvy night 3: A walk on the Wye side Mr Brown's little green bag 4 Midlevel baggery Bivvy night 4: Fast asleep on the Berwickshire coast Cave behaviour Bivvy night 5: A bedroom in Borrowdale Fallback bag Bag and camera Bivvy night 6: Man management Bag shopping Poncho, basha, tarp - and the groovy group shelter 5 Time, things and Miguel Time Things Miguel 6 Sleeping on summits Bivvy night 7: Great Gable Walking on the wet side 7 The comfort zone Bivvy night 8: Up Base Brown in down Sleeping mats Dew process Route 1: Merrick two-day trip 8 But what if it rains? Book SynopsisTHE EXTRAORDINARY STORY OF THE LONGEST-HELD AL QAEDA CAPTIVE IN THE WORLDStephen McGown was en route from London to South Africa, on a once-in-a-lifetime trip by motorbike, returning home to Johannesburg. He had reached Timbuktu, in Mali, when he was captured, along with a Dutch and a Swedish national, by Al Qaeda Islamist militants. Steve was taken because he held a British passport. He was subsequently held hostage at various camps in the Sahara Desert in the north-west of Africa for nearly six years before eventually being released.Life as Steve had known it changed in that instant that he was taken at gunpoint. He had nothing to bargain with, and everything to lose. For the next six years, he reluctantly engaged in what he came to call the greatest chess game of his life. Thousands of kilometres to the south, in Johannesburg, the shock of Stephen''s capture struck the McGown family and his wife, Cath, with whom he had, until recently, been living Trade ReviewProvides a compelling look at McGown's strength, fortitude and adaptability along with his instincts that guided his survival during his six-year ordeal. -- Vanessa Banton * news24 *McGown's struggle includes expanding his vast capacity for forgiveness . . . His exceptional conquest is renouncing implacable enmity and embracing the most exemplary in human nature. This is the Saharan Oasis he brought home. -- Mahmood Sanglay * Muslim Views *It was the first kidnapping in Timbuktu, in Mali . . . I had my passport in my pocket and I didn't realise. When I realised, it literally felt like the world was coming down around me. I went icy cold and numb. -- Stephen McGown, interviewed on CapeTalkA book so unlike any other that it keeps you awake at night with a head full of "what ifs" and "if onlys" . . . an excellent read, part adventure story, part psychological drama. -- Lesley StonesNot just an incredible story of mental strength, physical endurance and the resilience of the human spirit, but also a unique, nuanced perspective on one of the world's most feared terrorist organisations. Not only did Steve survive his ordeal, but in many respects he came out of the desert both a changed man and a stronger, more positive human. * Goodreads *

An inspiring, moving and uplifting memoir for fans of Cheryl Strayed's Wild and Elizabeth Gilbert's Eat, Pray, Love.As Gail took her first steps through the wilderness of the USA, she had no idea what lay ahead of her, but she knew she felt burnout from city life, lost and broken - ready to heal a mind and body that she had battled with for so long. From the resilience-building mountain climbs, painful injuries and harsh reality of braving the raw elements, to the unexpected friendships forged with other hikers and the kindness of strangers offering food and shelter - with every step, Gail started to let go of a past dominated by chronic pain and reconnected with herself in a way she'd never been able to before.A love letter to the healing power of the wild outdoors and an incredible testament to the strength of the human spirit, Gail's story is for anyone who has ever felt stuck in a rut, lost or scared. She shows us that even in our darkest times, it's possible to find our inner grit, face our fears and feel hopeful.Read what everyone is saying about Unlost: 'Amazing!... OMG! Book Synopsis Controversial Issues in Adventure Programming offers an engaging approach to the consideration of enduring, current, and emerging issues in the field. Written primarily for upper-level undergraduate and graduate students, the text presents 20 issues in a debate format, challenging students to participate in critical discourse concerning these issues as practitioners in the field of adventure programming. Respected authors Bruce Martin and Mark Wagstaff have assembled a team of more than 50 contributors from around the globe to reassess some of the underlying assumptions on which adventure programming is based. They have critically examined implications of new developments for emerging practice and discussed how best to position the field of adventure programming in addressing broader societal concerns. To set the stage for the debate, each issue is prefaced with a general overview, including the evolution of the issue and its significance in light of broader social concerns. Then, contributors present the pros and cons of each issue. A debate format helps students develop an understanding of the key points around each issue while also becoming familiar with current research pertinent to these issues. This approach also encourages students to grapple with these issues and begin to develop their own informed, thoughtful perspectives as they prepare for careers in adventure programming. Controversial Issues in Adventure Programming is divided into two parts. Part I begins by discussing issues of ongoing concern in the field, including the certification debate, motorized versus nonmotorized forms of outdoor recreation, and program accreditation. In part II, contemporary and emerging issues are presented, such as the use of online educational programming in the field of adventure programming. As a reference for practitioners and policy makers, Controversial Issues in Adventure Programming offers new and updated perspectives on enduring and emerging issues as well as a synthesis of the most recent related scholarly literature. In addition, the text serves as a resource in understanding how the adventure programming industry can contribute to addressing issues of broad concern in society, such as public health, global climate change, stewardship of public lands and waterways, and education reform. Controversial Issues in Adventure Programming encourages readers to participate in some of the central debates occurring in the field. Book SynopsisIn 1992, an Indian climber was left to die on the South Col of Mount Everest by other climbers who watched his feebly waving hand from their tent. He was filmed in his last hours for a television feature. Why did onlookers not hold the dying man''s hand and comfort him? The answer appals Joe Simpson, who was himself left for dead in a cervasse in Peru in 1985 - ''because it might compromise their summit bid''. It is an ethical question that Joe is forced to confront as he climbs a hazardous route on Pumori. Now that Everest has become the playground of the rich, where commercial operators offer guided tours to the top, camping admist the detritus and unburied corpses of previous less fortunate climbers, Joe wonders if the noble instincts that once characterised mountaineering have been irrevocably displaced - as in politics, in business, in the media and in other facets of society.Trade ReviewSimpson writes better on the darker side of mountaineering than any man alive -- Paul Johnson * The Times *His concern is that the strong ethics and selfless instincts that have characterised mountaineering in the past are being eroded by modern-day ambition, selfishness and greed -- Audrey Salkeld * Sunday Times *Simpson is an elegant stylist and as usual his prose is laced with humour * Daily Telegraph *An astonishing first chapter describes thoughts and feeling of a mountaineer slowly dying on Everest, while other climbers relax in a tent a few feet away. But this doesn''t mean we have to live in constant fear.Whether you’re in the midst of difficulty right now or being proactive rather than reactive, Ready for Anything gives finite simple steps for preparing your mind, your heart, and your home for any unfortunate circumstance. Full of stories and humor along with facts, tips, and lists, Kathi offers a down-to-earth guide that will show you how to face the unexpected with confidence, relying on God''s strength and plan rather than giving in to our fear and anxiety. Her step-byTrade ReviewLipp (Clutter Free) presents a timely, useful guide on practical preparedness. After being caught unprepared when her house nearly caught fire as the townhouse next to hers burned down (in panic she fled without shoes or her son), Lipp set out to make sure she would be prepared for any future disaster. Using the biblical description of a devout woman in Proverbs 31 as inspiration, Lipp seeks to be in control but not overwhelmed by overpreparing. She recommends living somewhere between being oblivious (doing nothing because God will surely take care of every need) and obsessive (becoming a prepper defending hundreds of cans of beans with a weapon). The process can start small with the purchase of a few extra supplies, such as food and an extra gas tank; updating a first aid kit; or keeping $100 in singles tucked away somewhere. Being prepared to be away from home for a few days and starting an emergency fund, Lipp writes, can serve as the foundation for a more complex plan to survive long-term emergencies. Lipp's warnings to store extra food supplies in the face of empty grocery store shelves and having a two-week toilet paper supply on hand have certainly proven prophetic during the Covid-19 pandemic. Other advice on managing finances and decluttering will have practical benefit for everyday living as well as during times of crisis. Though aimed at Christians, all readers will appreciate Lipp's hard-earned and practical insights. * Publishers Weekly *
