Book SynopsisSalivary Glands: Structure, Functions and Regulation summarizes the current understanding of the critical role that miRNAs and lncRNAs may play in salivary gland development and physiology, tumorigenesis and its progression, as well as in other pathologies. The authors also evaluate their potential as circulating biomarkers and therapeutic targets in different pathologies. Next, the authors explore the diagnostic assessment, surgical approaches, and use of radiation and chemotherapy in the treatment of parotid tumors. Furthermore, the most common complications of parotid surgery and relative management are considered. The clinical presentation, etiology and diagnostic modality of juvenile recurrent parotitis is reviewed, in conjunction with the role of sialoendoscopy in the diagnosis, management and prevention of recurrent attacks.

Nova Science Publishers Inc Leeway: Reaching Beyond Expectations. Dr. K.J.
Book SynopsisK.J. Lee is a world-renowned otolaryngologist and head and neck surgeon. Born in Malaya in 1940 during World War II, through his indefatigable spirit, talent and hard work he was able to change his life. Traveling to America in 1958 to study at Harvard on a full-tuition scholarship, he went on to make an indelible contribution to his chosen medical specialty. Among his many achievements, his drive and determination to support the next generation of ENT surgeons and to improve the healthcare experience for patients stand out. These vocations led to his publications of over 30 books and the seminal textbook, K.J. Lee's Essential Otolaryngology. It is considered the most widely read text in the field in the world, translated into several languages. This memoir covers his work as a government adviser for healthcare reform, and his founding the nonprofit foundation to encourage caregivers to treat patients as if caregivers are the patients, 'TPIU' (The Patient Is U). In this memoir, he shares his inspiring tale. In his usual spirit of encouraging and supporting the development of junior colleagues, Dr. Lee has chosen to tell his story through three Columbia University writers -- Sally Jee, Clementine Li, and Coco Ruan. Their own education and background have enabled them to fully understand and appreciate his story and communicate it in the words and style of K.J. himself, capturing his very essence and his unmistakable voice. Leeway is a tale of hard work and perseverance, reaching beyond expectations, positivity and forward-thinking, love and family, and above all, success against the odds. A memoir of surgeon K. J. Lee. Reaching Beyond Expectations, from the hideouts of Penang to Harvard and beyond; determination, hard work, ingenuity, emphasizing check lists that you look at frequently, anticipating problems and avoiding them, making lemonade out of lemons, being empathetic, learning from adversities and mistakes and trusting God's guidance. God helps those who help themselves. With God, all things are possible.Table of ContentsPreface; Acknowledgments; Introduction; The Lemons of His Life; Dont Take No for an Answer; Father and Son; Departure for a New World; The Ferncliff; Space Race and the Race of Life; Broken Cars and Broken Dreams, Everyones Hero; Surprise After Surprise; The Trip Where Everything Went Wrong; Off Guard; Have I Met You Before?; K.J. Nova Science Publishers Inc Prevention of Hearing Loss
Book SynopsisHearing loss is a chronic and often lifelong disability that can cause profound damage to the development of speech, language, and cognitive skills in children, especially when commencing before the critical period of language development in infancy. That damage, in turn, affects the child''s progress in school and, later, his or her ability to obtain, keep, and perform an occupation. In addition to its effects on individuals, data from several countries indicate that hearing loss has huge economic consequences. Thus, prevention of hearing loss, as well as being socially and morally justifiable, makes substantial economic sense as well.

Nova Science Publishers Inc Cochlear Implants: Technological Advances,
Book SynopsisBilateral Cochlear Implants (CIs) offer great benefits to patients suffering from lack of hearing by improving speech understanding as well as by providing a sense of directionality. Software and hardware synchronization issues of binaural processing have limited all the benefits that could be offered by bilateral CIs. This book provides discussions on topics that include a generalized speech enhancement framework for bilateral cochlear implants using a single processor; long-term results of CIs; minimally invasive cochlear implantation; quality of life in adult CI recipients; and the evolution of the indications for CI and new frontiers.

Nova Science Publishers Inc Paranasal Sinuses: Anatomy, Development &
Book SynopsisThe past two decades have witnessed enormous advances in the field of rhinology and sinonasal diseases. Chronic Sinusitis is one of the most common chronic illnesses. The introduction of functional endoscopic sinus surgery in the late eighties has revolutionised the surgical approach to sinus disease. Since that time, endoscopic sinus surgery has become the surgical procedure of choice and has been adopted for training and teaching. Furthermore, the approach to sinus disease has significantly evolved. We have witnessed the introduction of balloon sinuplasty, image guided surgery, multidisciplinary approach and the promotion of evidence based medicine and guidelines. The essence of any surgical technique or any guideline is based on the wealth of knowledge of anatomy and physiology. This book details the explicit anatomy and pathophysiology of the various sinuses. Special emphasis has been made on paediatric sinus diseases since it is a topic that has not been well covered and mandates further understanding. This unique book can form a roadmap for the otolaryngologist in training, medical students practicing otolaryngologist in private or academic sector and paramedical personnel. The target and scope go beyond otolaryngology to attract the attention of any paediatrician, general practitioner or family medicine specialist. The chapters have been well-written not only to detail the importance of each structure and pathophysiological mechanisms, but also to make it easily understandable for all readers at different levels. The authors have been selected from panels of nationally and intellectually acknowledged experts. The wealth of information in this book has exhausted the efforts of brilliant and well-established, experienced and academically prominent leaders in their fields. All chapters are not only written in easy-to-read detailed paragraphs, but are also illustrated with radiographic and surgical figures adding a live interpretation to the abstractive sentences. It is our hope that this text will serve as a comprehensive contemporary guide and reference to all students and practitioners that aim to widen their horizon of learning, revive their illustrative and descriptive memory of knowledge and improve their expertise.

Nova Science Publishers Inc Obstructive & Central Sleep Apnea
Book SynopsisThe spectrum of sleep-disordered breathing ranges from primary snoring at one end to obstructive sleep apnea and central sleep apnea at the other end. The first chapter in this book provides current state of knowledge about the mechanisms of obstructive sleep apnea and central sleep apnea and reviews emerging therapies for these disorders. Furthermore, sleep apnea usually has multifactorial causes and affects multiple organic systems resulting in increased cardiovascular morbidity, disturbing sleep quality, metabolic balance, glucose and cholesterol levels, arterial hypertension and thus increasing cardiopulmonary and vascular morbidity. The second chapter summarises the main findings in literature and provides a brief and concise differential diagnosis. The authors of the third chapter expose and discuss current evidence of neurosurgical conditions and their role in the genesis and progression of sleep apnea. They emphasise the adequate treatment and future perspectives. The following chapter examine the effect of obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS) on the eye. Different ophthalmologic disorders are associated with OSAS including floppy eyelid syndrome, retinal vein occlusion, and central serious retinopathy. The last chapter in this book is focused on QT dispersion in patients with obstructive sleep apnea, with increased QT dispersion potentially reflecting disturbed myocardial repolarisation and predisposition to cardiac arrhythmias.
