It covers issues related to managing employees and work teams as well as organizational structure and culture in sport. The book has four sections: Organizational Behavior in the Sports Industry, Getting to Know Employees and Volunteers of Sport Organizations, Work Groups and Teams, and Understanding the Organization. Each chapter begins with a practitioner interview describing a challenge that was overcome by their organization. That example is used to highlight applicable theories and interventions used in the industry. Additional examples or theories are discussed to provide students a broad picture of managerial issues in the sports industry and provide alternative approaches to intervention illustrated in the practitioner interview. The case studies offer the opportunity to practice and apply the ideas to real-world scenarios in the sports industry. Springer-Verlag Berlin and Heidelberg GmbH & Co. KG Economic Efficiency of the Organizational Decisions of the Firm
Book SynopsisOver the past several years there has been an awareness that mar kets, contractual arrangements, and hierarchical organizations can be uti lized as alternative modes of coordinating resource utilization in the con text of the firm. In most practical situations mixed forms of organization are more frequent. That is, non-market coordination mechanisms are being utilized even in predominantly market oriented economies. The reasons for the use of one of these organizational modes over the others are still being examined extensively. Very often, asset specificity and bilateral monopoly, risk sharing under uncertainty, transaction cost considerations, and/or technological externalities (economies of scope) have been considered as the major reasons for preferring one of these modes over the others. However, the ultimate effect on the performance of the firm, of any of these aspects which result in the adoption of any specific organizational pattern, has to be through the cost curve and/or the demand curve. The neoclassical welfare concepts, which have been developed to examine the efficiency in the functioning of markets, are well known. The sources of inefficiency in the performance of the firm under different mar ket structures are also well documented. However, there is as yet no well established set of concepts to examine the economic efficiency of the other organizational forms. It is not clear that the neoclassical welfare concepts are not relevant even under the new organizational setting. Studies of this nature are a relatively new area of economic research.Table of Contents1. The Firm and Its Organization.- 1.1. Market Exchange.- 1.2. Monopolistic Competition.- 1.3. Springer-Verlag Berlin and Heidelberg GmbH & Co. KG Practice-Based Innovation: Insights, Applications and Policy Implications
Book SynopsisThe book describes and analyses the new environment for innovation, it does this with an emphasis on yet uncharted regions within the field of practice-based innovation, coming up with guidelines for innovation policy measures needed in order to realise this. While it focuses on these policies it also takes into account multi-actor innovation processes, user-driven innovation, "related variety" and many other aspects; aspects such as, just to name a few: communicating creative processes and distributing practice-based innovation; then there is creativity itself, encompassing new fields of knowledge and expertise. The authors go on to describe value networks, showing how to make practice-based innovations, explaining innovation diffusion and absorptive capacity. The book presents new insights as well as the latest research related to the frequently used term "innovation". Definitions are put forward, giving, by way of examples, a detailed description of concepts we draw upon when using these. Innovation as a concept is constantly being subdivided into increasingly finer distinctions, which, in turn, determine the discourse. The book takes a close look at these, further taking into account the challenges as well as the opportunities inherent in developing practice-based innovation procedures and policies of global importance, never losing sight of advancing long-term effectiveness.Table of ContentsInsights into Practice-Based Innovation and Innovation Strategies.- Micro-, Meso- and Regional Level Applications.- Case Studies and Policy Implications.

Springer-Verlag Berlin and Heidelberg GmbH & Co. KG Agile Management: Leadership in an Agile Environment
Book SynopsisIf you have tried to implement Agile in your organization, you have probably learned a lot about development practices, teamwork, processes and tools, but too little about how to manage such an organization. Yet managerial support is often the biggest impediment to successfully adopting Agile, and limiting your Agile efforts to those of the development teams while doing the same old-style management will dramatically limit the ability of your organization to reach the next Agile level.Ángel Medinilla will provide you with a comprehensive understanding of what Agile means to an organization and the manager’s role in such an environment, i.e., how to manage, lead and motivate self-organizing teams and how to create an Agile corporate culture. Based on his background as a “veteran” Agile consultant for companies of all sizes, he delivers insights and experiences, points out possible pitfalls, presents practical approaches and possible scenarios, also including detailed suggestions for further reading. If you are a manager, team leader, evangelist, change agent (or whatever nice title) and if you want to push Agile further in your organization, then this is your book. You will read how to change the paradigm of what management is about: it is not about arbitrary decisions, constant supervision and progress control, and the negotiation of changing requirements. It is about motivation, self-organization, responsibility, and the exploitation of all project stakeholders’ knowledge. We live in a different world than the one that most management experts of the 20th century describe, and companies that strive for success and excellence will need a new kind of manager – Agile managers.Trade Review"Get this book if you need an introduction to agile development." Springer-Verlag Berlin and Heidelberg GmbH & Co. KG Managing the Digital Transformation: A Guide to Successful Organizational Change
Book SynopsisDigitisation and digital transformation are not only a topic of the media, but are also taking place in companies. The digital transformation affects the most diverse fields, from procurement to sales and from organisation to strategy development. This task requires the commitment of every company management and cannot simply be delegated. This book aims to help managers and entrepreneurs to set up structures in their organisation that allow them to approach the digital transformation systematically. The topics covered range from the configuration of digitisation strategies and new management roles such as the Chief Digital Officer to the importance of IT infrastructures, HR management and corporate culture as enablers of digital transformation. A simple framework serves as an orientation framework that structures the management tasks and clearly summarises the various concepts and instruments. In the 2nd revised and expanded edition, the focus is on organisational aspects, in particular the role of start-ups for the digital transformation, the design of the so-called Digital Innovation Units and the role of the CDO. Secondly, the design and management of digitisation projects is considered in more detail. And thirdly, the concept of digital transformation is further specified and delimited. In addition, the advancing technological development is taken into account."Prof. Thomas Hess provides a concrete overview of many important aspects to be considered in the digital transformation of companies. Clearly worth reading."Stefan Winners, Chief Digital Officer at Hubert Burda Media"Beyond the buzzword - Finally someone manages to systematically untangle the chaos surrounding digital transformation. With his book, Thomas Hess truly establishes the guardrails for managing digital transformation projects. Taylor & Francis Ltd Family Business
Book SynopsisUntil the early 1980s, serious academic research on family businesses was sparse, to say the least. The scholarship that did exist was primarily based on anecdotal evidence, and mostly biased toward the negative effects of family involvement, particularly in terms of nepotism and family feuds undermining a firmâs performance and familial relationships. Considered at best an example for how not to manage a business, family business was deemed not worthy of scientific attention. This has changed dramatically over the past three decades and this new Routledge Major Works collection provides users with background knowledge about the foundations of family-business theory and research, as well as a sense of its theoretical and empirical variety. Edited and with a new introduction by a team of leading scholars, the four volumes assemble the very best and most influential works in family business to provide an authoritative research resource.
