Book SynopsisHow to use the iris of the eye as a diagnostic medical tool The human iris provides a unique window into our bodies, offering clues to our past, present, and future health. Its related science—iridology—allows us to assess our wellbeing and provides pathways to follow to ensure we remain physically and emotionally fit. Iridologist and herbalist Peter Jackson-Main demonstrates just how easy it is for readers to make use of this diagnostic tool. With just a small flashlight and a mirror, you can begin to compare your eyes with the dozens shown in this book, learning about your constitution and how you can avoid potential health problems In this revised and expanded edition, Practical Iridology also explains what the colours and markings of your eyes reveal; details dietary and exercise routines for different iris types; provides a visual glossary of the different iris signs; and offers guidance in preparing remedies.Trade Review“Peter’s work on iridology is just the way I like it: commonsense, simple, and practical. After all, what good is any clinical tool if the end result is not the patient learning more about themselves, so they can adjust their lifestyle to get more quality and quantity out of life. Peter’s work helps the patient learn more about themselves, so they can fine-tune their lifestyle and make better choices, to get the most out of life.” Dr. Richard Schulze, ND, founder of Natural Healing Clinic and Dr. Schulze’s Herbal Products Company “Through his extensive experience, as both an iridology practitioner and a gifted teacher, Peter has skilfully reorganised the teachings of past masters into a contemporary framework. With thoughtful diagnostic questions and practical recommendations, he eloquently explains that once we grasp the true essence of the iris, it can serve as a profound insight into both the inner reality of a person and the external manifestation of bodily ailments. Practical Iridology represents a milestone in the field of iridology. Readers will undoubtedly find themselves captivated by the transformative potential of this ancient art and science.” Toni Miller, ND, DHM, MII, CCII, Fellow Ir, leading iridology teacher, researcher, lecturer, and author of The Integrated Iridology Textbook “Practical Iridology, revised and expanded, distils Peter Jackson-Main’s extensive clinical and teaching experience over forty-five years. Jessica Kingsley Publishers How Behavioral Optometry Can Unlock Your Child's

    5 in stock

Book SynopsisVisual dysfunctions can limit children's concentration, self esteem and school success as they struggle to understand fundamentals such as colors, letters and how to judge distance. With the right help, these obstacles can be overcome, allowing children to reach their full potential and see the world clearly. This accessible book explores how visual problems develop and how they can be reversed through effective and efficient visual therapy. It breaks down myths surrounding visual dysfunction and explains in straightforward terms the various conditions that could be impacting a child's perception, even if they have perfect sight. The visual therapy used in behavioral optometry retrains the brain to perform visual skills more effectively. In these pages there is clear guidance on the array of therapies, techniques and aids available, all of which can make a profound difference to a child's life. This introductory guide to behavioral optometry will be a welcome resource for parents and professionals in search of options to help a child who is experiencing visual problems.Trade Review“In these pages Joel Warshowsky, OD, shows how important it is for the success of behavioral vision care treatments, as well as health care at large, to be caring and empathetic, to listen to one's patients and to find supportive ways to communicate back with them. Over many years he has sung this theme consistently and in harmony with his excellent clinical skills. This book is the pinnacle of his work and encapsulates his caring demeanor in a way that all health care practitioners can learn from and employ in their own practices.” -- Paul Harris, Doctor of Optometry, Associate Professor, Southern College of Optometry, Tennessee, USAThis book should be required reading for every parent, patient and professional who cares for children! It is a fascinating written work full of practical, easy to understand information about vision and your child…This book will become your guide to your child's success. -- Bruchie Barbara Langsam, parent, New York City, USAThis is an interesting book which would be of value to any special needs coordinator or other specialist teacher working with children... A very worthwhile read! -- Mary Mountstephen, SEN Magazine.Warshowsky comes across as a nice guy who has a passion for his field of work. His own experiences as a child and his experience of observing many children who seem to be let down by the education system is what drives his interest in this field. Many children have considerable resources invested in them but still fail to thrive and behavioural optometry, according to Warshowsky, can explain these anomalies... the book is divided into three parts and is clearly written. The first part is concerned with how vision problems affect a child and how this differentiates from sight problems. Part two expands on what vision therapy is and what it entails and finally he discusses specific vision problems and the therapeutic use of corrective lenses. There is a very useful appendix with exercises parents could try, which for a family on low income with no access to a behavioural optometrist could be helpful. -- AsteensTable of ContentsPreface. Book SynopsisDry eye syndrome is a common disease of tear film and ocular surface developed in numerous aetiologies. Tear film instability and ocular surface disturbances that subsequently influence the tear film are among the primarily causes of this disease, but many other factors are involved in tear film disorders. Although eye surface is easily reached by classical ocular dosage forms, novel drug delivery systems for ocular administration offer advantages in terms of increased residence time on eye surface and/or controlled release of the drug, with enhanced therapeutic effectiveness. This book provides an overview on the potential benefits and limitations in dry eye syndrome management and reported successful formulations.

Book SynopsisMyopia is a common ocular condition affecting approximately 1.6 billion people worldwide. An increasing trend of myopia has been observed throughout the world and the prevalence of myopia is expected to increase to 2.5 billion by the year 2020. This book focuses on definition, mechanisms, optics, refraction, clinical presentation, complications and management of myopia in regards of recent advances. Myopia (nearsightedness) is a refractive error (ametropia) that occurs when parallel rays of light entering the non-accommodating eye are not focused on the retina. As a result, images of distant objects are focused in front of the retina and thus appear blurred. Myopia is the most common eyesight problem in the world and is often mild and there are no serious problems. However, it may sometimes lead to blindness. Myopia can be corrected with spherical lenses, contact lenses or with refractive surgery. The book gives an overview of myopia from definition, etiology to surgical treatment. Contents are based on recent findings published in the medical literature and reflect the most advanced achievements in current clinical and experimental research on myopia. This book presents relevant information that students, optometrists, orthoptists, ophthalmologists as well as scientists involved in clinical and basic research on myopia need to know about this important topic.

The authors of this book explore the possibility of applying the concept of fractal analysis to images of retinal blood vessels for morphometric analysis and classification; the quality of life for children with retinopathy of prematurity; the differences in ethnicity and socioeconomic status that influence the prevalence, risks, outcome and management of ROP; the outcome and prognostic factors of the intravitreal administration of bevacizumab for ROP; the outcomes of transpupillary diode laser photocoagulation for ROP; new therapeutic strategies for treating ROP and late complications that can develop and persistent into later childhood and even adult life (for example, long-term refractive errors, amblyopia, strabismus and optic nerve abnormalities).

Book SynopsisSleep disorders are increasingly recognized to contribute to medical morbidities and mortality. More and more ocular diseases are linked to sleep disorders, among them in particular being obstructive sleep apnea. Management of these ocular diseases requires a good understanding of such association and often a collaborative approach with sleep disorder specialists. On the other hand, many patients with sleep disorders have concurrent ocular disorders. With this in mind, timely referral to ophthalmologists would greatly alleviate comorbidities and improve the quality of life in such patients. Eye Diseases Associated with Sleep Disorders emphasizes the underlying pathophysiology of each ocular disorder in the respective setting of sleep disorders. A typical case scenario is presented at the beginning of each chapter. The specific ocular disease is then described in reader-friendly terms to facilitate an overall understanding of the condition. The authors finally review the accumulated evidence regarding the association between ocular diseases and sleep disorders, from discussing possible underlying pathophysiologies to the analysis of clinical study data. With a good understanding of the pathogenesis, this book helps bring together primary care clinicians with eye care specialists for managing patient morbidities in an easily digestible figure-rich format.

Book SynopsisEndophthalmitis refers to the inflammation of the intraocular tissues and fluids of the eye and can be non-infectious or caused by bacterial, fungal or parasitic infection. It can be classified as exogenous (post-operative, post-traumatic or as a complication of a corneal ulcer) or endogenous (secondary to hematogenous spread from another infected site). This book discusses the clinical manifestations, relevance of diagnosis, and involved species of fungal endophthalmitis. It also examines anti-vascular endothelial growth factor medications; prevention and treatment of postoperative endophthalmitis; and a pharmacokinetic review of antibiotics used in the treatment of endophthalmitis.

Book SynopsisAge-related macular degeneration (AMD) is the leading cause of blindness in individuals older than 65 years of age. The authors of this book discuss the role of genetics, sunlight, diet, cardiovascular factors, smoking and alcohol as possible risk factors for AMD. Furthermore, the dry form is more common and accounts for about 85-90% of AMD patients in the USA, while Japanese AMD patients predominantely progress to wet-form or polypoidal choroidal vasculopathy (PCV). The function of a serine protein gene, HTRA1, in wet-form AMD patients is explored in detail. Conversely, the final chapter evaluates the therapeutic effects of high omega-3 fatty acids as anti-inflammatory agents in dry AMD patients. The preliminary findings indicate a promising therapeutic regime for dry AMD and perhaps for other retinopathies as well.
