With dozens of Haidee-Jo's artworks to provide inspiration to the reader, and clear, step-by-step demonstrations throughout, this book provides both an expert guide to the challenges, opportunities and fun of painting outdoors; and provides an insight into the working methods of this dynamic artist.Trade ReviewA super, no nonsense guide, Haidee-Jo deals with all aspects of starting out with plein air painting. The book is beautifully and liberally illustrated. The whole process, from choosing the correct equipment and paints to finding inspiration and coping with every weather condition is covered with practical advice. Exercises and examples are used throughout, based on the artists own experience and work. She even discusses the main barrier that may prevent some people engaging in plein air painting, i.e. painting in public and there is a chapter dealing with options for works which for whatever reason haven’t made the grade. It is a comprehensive work filled with a wealth of knowledge and information and the artists’ obvious love and enthusiasm for her subject, a must for anyone wishing to take their first steps outside. -- Anne Chalkley * Amazon Customer Review *I’ve looked forward to the release of this book by my favourite plein air artist Haidee-Jo Summers and it certainly doesn’t disappoint. There is lots of inspiration for anyone wanting to give plein air painting a try. I know I have wanted to paint en plein air but being an amateur have not had the confidence. Haidee-Jo’s book certainly encourages me to give it a go. Her book provides lots of helpful and practical advice and tips on how to go about this, from what equipment you may need and how to transport this, colour palettes and colour mixing, how to compose a painting and how to simplify subjects, how to deal with changeable weather. There are demonstrations to show her painting process from quick sketches to doing tonal washes leading to final paintings. And she provides exercises for you to try to gain more confidence such as doing timed paintings against the clock in small panels to help you learn to paint faster, and painting from memory to develop your short term visual memory, all helpful for painting outside in order to get the essential details down before your subject changes! Even though this is not a hardback book it has a sturdy glossy cover and the pages are of good quality with a plentiful number of good quality photos of Haidee-Jo’s beautiful paintings to drool over and envy! She truly is the expert and advocate for plein air painting, not just of landscapes but of the everyday subjects that a lot of people would overlook, as Haidee-Jo has the knack of finding the light and shadows that bring out their beauty and creating a stunning painting. I can’t recommend this book highly enough. -- Julie Geelan * Amazon Customer Review *I should first of all say that I am not an oil painter. I paint mostly in watercolour and sometimes in gouache or casein paint. However I just love this book. It is packed full with information and her beautiful paintings, and I cannot wait to ‘get out there’ after looking at this. It is really inspiring and packed with practical advice too. Well done Haidee-Jo, this is a winner for sure! * Customer Review *This book is full of very useful information. Beautifully illustrated to inspire the artist to get out and give plein air a go. I am an experienced painter but found lots of very useful advice within the pages. * Customer Review *Everything you need to know to help you start plein air painting. Suitable for all. Haidee-Jo offers practical advice given in her easy to read style. She has condensed her years of experience into this fabulous book and given us a chance to join her on this amazing adventure. Just brilliant! -- Charlotte Davies * Amazon Customer Review *As a regular plein air painter I found the finishing “Pearls of wisdom” very relatable and written with kind humour! This book appeals across the experience range, with essential information for beginners to reinforcement for the more experienced; a visual treat clearly written with examples and exercises. -- Steven James Dunster * Amazon Customer Review *Time spent in Haidee-Jo's company is always time well spent. She is adept at voicing her thought processes and showing how the creative endeavour develops in the face of changing circumstance, light and the way the work itself progresses. This is not, therefore, a straightforward book of instruction, but rather a tour round the process of painting outdoors and dealing with both the practical and theoretical considerations it raises. A quick flick through the pages reveals a wealth of visual material - just about every one of the 176 pages is packed with illustrations. These cover all of the subjects you'd expect as well as a variety of compositions, light and weather conditions. As well as demonstrations, there are plenty of discussions of aesthetics, colour, recession and ways to set up. This should delight any oil painter and is one of the most complete and absorbing books on the subject. -- Henry Malt * The Artist *Award-winning artist and editorial consultant to The Artist magazine, Haidee-Jo Summers describes herself as hooked on plein-air painting and here she shows us why. Haidee-Jo's work is fresh and full of vibrancy. With a deceptively easy sweep of her brush, she can bring her canvas to life and her work will energise you to have a go yourself. There's plenty of clear step-by-step demonstrations to work through with Haidee-Jo at your side offering paractical advice to overcome challenges that painting outdoors in the elements can throw at you. Above all, it is the sense of well-being that painting outside can bring to you that she is so keen to share and her love of plein-air painting will surely be contagious. * Leisure Painter *Time spent with Haidee-Jo is always time well spent and feels more like a relaxed conversation with an old friend than any kind of tutorial process. If you’ve watched any of her DVDs, you’ll know that she spends time discussing not just ways of applying paint, but of reacting to scenes and conditions, explaining the way the creative process works perhaps better than anyone else. A book is a very different beast, of course, and needs to be more prescriptive than discursive. The written word doesn’t um and ah, doesn’t wave its arms about to make a point eloquently and doesn’t get distracted by a sudden gust of wind. At least, it shouldn’t, though we can all think of books that wander infuriatingly off the topic. No, I won’t be mentioning any names. For all that, what we have here is an enjoyable ramble through the ways of oil painting. And that’s not a sentence I’ve ever written in forty years. Rambling is normally associated with watercolour; oils are a much more serious business. Aren’t they? You see, that’s the thing, Haidee-Jo is a painter who happens to work in oils, not a (serious voice) Painter In Oils. The medium is very much not the message, merely (is that the right word?) the messenger, a way of communicating form, colour, composition and emotion. There, I’ve said it, I’ve used the E word, because that’s really what this book is about. The subtitle (they’re always instructive) is “a practical and inspirational guide to painting outdoors”. What you’ll get here is advice about the practicalities of working the field – equipment, preparation, adaptation – as well as how to recognise a subject and construct a scene, whether it’s landscapes, trees, flowers, buildings, water or even people. There’s consideration of light, weather, seeing, interpreting, remembering (because scenes change before your very eyes) and, of course, getting the all-important paint on the also-important canvas. This is an enjoyable book that can’t but inspire you to get outside. You probably can’t take Haidee-Jo with you, so you’ll just have to imagine her. -- Henry Malt * Artbookreview.net *This is a fascinating and thorough guide to working outdoors that feels much more like an adventure with an old friend than a course of instruction. Chapters include working with changing light, allowing for weather and even working around people. On top of this, there's plenty of advice on practice, from colour and brushwork to composition, planning, both on the ground and on the canvas, and finishing off in the studio. * SAA Catalogue *Table of ContentsForeword 6, An introduction to painting outdoors 8, Choosing a subject 12, Getting outside: equipment and supplies 18, Painting outside: The bigger picture 32, Chasing the light: alla prima 44, Step-by-step Improving your visual memory 52, Slowing down: painting over multiple sessions 62, Colour and your palette 70, Step-by-step Fog and Ruby Chard 80, Design and impact: composing your artwork 84, Step-by-step Free Range Hens at Low Bradfield 96, Step-by-step Waterfall 106, Still life en plein air 108, Step-by-step Log Pile 114, Painting in daylight 118, Step-by-step Pink Cherry Blossom Against the Sky 124, Step-by-step Beyond the Gate 132, Working with the weather 140, Painting around people 152, Exploring further: working in the studio 170, Afterword 174, Index 176

Search Press Ltd The Oil Painter's Bible: An Essential Reference
Book SynopsisOil paint is such a responsive and versatile medium that no two painters need use it in exactly the same way, and since its invention in Renaissance times it has never lost its popularity with artists. Amateurs also find it appealing, both because it is enjoyable to use and because mistakes can be so easily rectified. This compact book explains all the materials, techniques and different approaches to painting with oils. Step-by-step sequences show how to paint a range of themes, from still life to portraits and landscapes, with advice on more difficult subjects. There are also suggestions for presenting your finished paintings and how to go about getting your work seen and exhibited.Trade ReviewI received this book from Search Press in return for an unbiased and honest review. It's been a long time since I dabbled in Oils so this book was a nice refresher for the returning amaturer oil painter. The book is aimed primarily at those who are new to oil painting and Amateurs' rather than the professional Oil painter. I found it well laid out and easy to understand. It talks about the paints themselves and how amatur and professional paints are different in shade and amount of pigment they contain. It covers tools required and how to use them and also how the paint itself can look different depending on the painting surface. I was impressed with how well it covers mixing colours for skin tone, sunsets, water and skies to name but a few. It is certainly a book that is well worth purchasing for anyone wishing to start or improve their skills with oil paints, Art students who need a backup or just those wishing to learn more techniques than the mere basics. * Laura Mackenzie-Hawkins *A great guide for the beginner in oils I received this book from Search Press in return for an unbiased and honest review. I am a long-term painter in oils, so I was very interested in seeing how this book came across. Subtitled “An essential reference for the practising artist”, this book is aimed primarily at those new to oil painting, although the more experienced will also find parts of the book useful. This is a 2016 reprint of the original 2005 edition. I’m not sure whether there have been any updates to the original but the book does not feel out of date in any way. The book is about A5 in size and printed on high quality paper with easy to read text. A two-page introduction gives a well presented precis of the contents and how they are organised. There are four main section to the book: Materials, Colour, Techniques and Subjects. I shall deal with each in turn. Many of the subjects include an analysis and tips for the artist. Materials Straight away, the author highlights the difference between artist and student quality paint and the benefits of buying only the tubes you need, rather than a boxed set. The different types of brush shape and composition are well covered, with illustrations to back-up the text. There are sections on painting knives, surfaces, painting mediums and surface preparation. Each is well presented in just a couple of pages with good quality supporting illustrations. This section will be of great use to the beginner, with the occasional snippet for the more experienced. Colour Making sense of the multitude of colours available can be a daunting task for all of us. However, the author, Marylin Scott, presents the various aspects of the colour wheel and the differing characteristics of the various colours in a clear and methodical way. Once again, the accompanying illustrations are of a high quality and support the text extremely well. Advice is given on choosing an initial palette, with examples of the mixes that could be achieved from the selection. The author goes on to cover the mixing of greens, browns etc, with pictorial examples of how one might use the mixes. Techniques One term often bandied around is “Fat over Lean”. Marlin gets straight to the point and illustrates how the technique is used, why it is used and the results. An excellent description in my view and one that could be of use to many painters. The section continues with basic and advanced subjects. Basic techniques cover painting Alla Prima (and what that means), blending, building up, underdrawing, brushwork, dry brush, hard and soft edges, coloured grounds (including what we men by a ‘ground’), we-in-wet, wet-on-dry, and corrections. Advanced techniques cover glazing, impasto, knife painting, finger painting, sponge painting, scumbling, tonking, scraping back, sgraffito, texturing, underpainting, imprinting, masking, mono printing, and mixed media. Useful hints and tips The author discusses the various materials used to create a painting, how to create darks and adjust perceived colours, preparing a surface, and painting on location. Subjects In this section, Marylin considers a variety of subjects: landscape, still life, buildings etc., with supporting tutorials to follow. Each item has well presented examples of the subject being discussed, helping the reader understand the reasoning behind the text. Conclusion I found this book easy to read and quite interesting. I certainly found snippets that I will refer to and use in my own work. A member of my art group has just started to use oils and I can see that this book would be an extremely useful resource for her. Find a place for this book on your shelves; it will repay your investment. * David Raison *I am an amateur painter and had recently taken up oil paints. I was struggling a bit so switched back to acrylics. This book has made me look at returning to oils as there are many tips, examples and lessons that I have not seen elsewhere. For example I was surprised to see finger painting as I have never encountered this before in any books. The book is well laid out and the content is clear; set out in four comprehensive sections. I particularly like the colour chapter on “Mixing and Using Colours” as I struggle with colours and looking at this I am sure it will be a great help. There is a page on Useful Extra Colours that I found very interesting but feel it could have been expanded on as it was very brief. I was given this book by Search Press Art to provide a review of the book within one week of receipt so I have not been able to use the book on a practical level but am looking forward now to returning to oil painting and using it as it is loaded with useful, interesting information. All in all a nice little bible. * Grace McCarron *

Search Press Ltd Beginner's Guide to Painting with Oil Pastels:
Book Synopsis'If you thought oil pastels were just something for children, prepare to think again.' The Artist '...look on in wonder as Tim shows you how you can use this neglected but simple medium to create real works of art...Just open this book at random and you'll be hooked.' Paint Magazine Learn to paint with oil pastels in this colourful, accessible book for newcomers to the medium. Tim Fisher demonstrates how to use the oil pastels on their own, or in conjunction with acrylic inks and paints, and watercolours, on a variety of surfaces, to create beautiful paintings that will maintain their vibrancy for years to come. The Beginner's Guide to Painting with Oil Pastels features six full step-by-step projects covering a variety of subjects including animal portraits, street scenes, boats and harbours, buildings and glorious landscapes. Tim introduces the reader to mark-making with oil pastels, explains the history of the medium, and how to protect and keep an oil pastel painting once it is complete. Trade ReviewIf you thought oil pastels were just something for your children, think again. As Tim makes clear in his introduction, they were invented 100 years ago as a means of combining the convenience of wax crayons with the quality of pigments suited to more serious art. They have, however struggled to escape the schoolroom connection and have been too frequently overlooked. This book is aimed at the beginner, so you'll need to balance this approach and detailed step-by-step demonstrations against the quality of work that Tim produces and adapt the way you use this, one of the very few books on this subject. Persistence will be rewarded and, with a minimal amount of equipment, you can discover a medium that, while perfect for outdoor sketching, is capable of the subtle effects more often associated with chalk pastels or even watercolour. * The Artist, February 2019 *If you think that oil pastels are just a pricier version of the wax crayon this book will show you how they have really come of age. From their invention in the early 20th century to the acid-free and non-yellowing type we use today they are surprisingly versatile, and mix well with other art media. I confess to having no idea of their origins so found the short history very interesting. This book will particularly appeal to anybody who possesses existing art skills (and materials) but wants to discover how to incorporate oil pastels in their work. It is a beginner’s guide to this and not a primer on how to draw and paint. Discover what brand the author buys and what else he suggests you can use. A surprising array of different materials and tools come into play, from a hairdryer to a scalpel, acrylic and watercolour paints, and inks, encaustic iron, hot glue gun and many more. Prepare a variety of surfaces and work through several exercises on mark making, sgraffito, stencilling, masking, using solvents, working with other types of paint and more. Each exercise will produce a painting, the best way of learning any art technique. After the basics there are several projects, which show in classic Search Press style (ie many captioned photographs for a foolproof learning experience) what to do. Paint flowers, a street scene in Venice, trees, a harbour, a dog and a country cottage. Learn too how to frame your work and look after it. It shows how art doesn’t have to be about just one medium, but mixing it up a bit can produce some excellent results and also how versatile modern materials can be. -- Rachel Hyde * myshelf.com *Oil pastels have a hard time of it in the art world. Often regarded as mere child’s toys, they were invented in Japan some 100 years ago (Tim includes a fascinating history) as a means of combining wax crayons with the better quality pigments demanded by the serious artist. As a medium, they have much to recommend them, being easy to carry and requiring little in the way of ancillary equipment. They don’t drop colour, have no drying time and the images they create are thoroughly robust. If nothing else, therefore, they’re worthy of consideration as a lightweight sketching medium. However, as Tim amply and ably demonstrates here, they’re capable of considerable subtlety and the results he produces could easily be taken for soft pastel or even watercolour. This is, as the title suggests, aimed at the beginner and includes a very straightforward introduction and a series of detailed demonstrations that make the medium’s capabilities clear. For the more experienced artist, this might be a little more than is required, but it may still prove helpful if you are trying something that is unfamiliar. If I were to tell you that this is easily the best book on oil pastels I’ve seen, you’d rightly point out that it’s probably the only one. This isn’t quite true – I’m pretty sure I remember another – but Tim hasn’t taken the easy route and has put a lot of trouble into producing a book it will be hard to better. -- artbookreview.net * Henry Malt *Well-known to Leisure Painter readers, Tim Fisher demonstrates how to use oil pastels in this Beginner's Guide to Painting with Oil Pastels. The book includes history of oil pastels as well as the materials and tools you will need. Six full step-by-step projects, covering a variety of subjects show readers how to create vibrant oil pastel paintings, and demonstrate how they can be used in conjunction with acrylic inks and paints, as well as watercolours. * Leisure Painter, January 2019 *Tim's use of line, colour and economy of shape, make it one of the best books on painting, period. * Paint magazine (November 2018) *In a series of full-colour demonstrations, Tim shows you how to work with subjects as diverse as landscapes, buildings, boats, dogs, trees and flowers. De Gruyter Matisse, Derain, and their Friends: The Parisian
Book SynopsisAt the beginning of the 20th century, a group of artists around Henri Matisse and André Derain were carrying out revolutionary colour experiments. The art critic Louis Vauxcelles gave them their name in 1905: the "Fauves". Translated into English, this means something like "beasts" or "wild animals". This catalogue is being published for the first survey exhibition on the Fauves staged in Switzerland for decades. It presents the expressive painting style and unusual colour combinations employed by Matisse, Derain and their companions in the years 1904 to 1908, situating them in the aesthetic and socio-political debates of that time. The male connotation of the term Fauves already suggests the exclusion of women artists on a conceptual level. The exhibition and catalogue challenge this traditional view and draw attention to female protagonists on the Paris art scene. Richly illustrated and supplemented by new art-historical research contributions, the publication offers an insight into the diversity of the colourful painting by the "beasts". The University of Chicago Press Rembrandts Late Religious Portraits
Book SynopsisOne of the most fascinating aspects of Rembrandt's extraordinary artistic career is his suite of brooding half-length portraits of religious figures from the late 1650s and early 1660s. Painted during a difficult time in the artist's life - when he no longer enjoyed a ready market for his works and may have turned to his deep religious convictions for solace - these images are among the most evocative Rembrandt created. For years scholars have debated whether these paintings were intended as a series, yet until now these works have, unbelievably, never been shown together. An exhibition by the National Gallery of Art and this accompanying catalog assemble seventeen of the paintings for the first time, finally giving the powerful images their due. Many of these subtle and wondrous paintings have been identified as images of apostles and evangelists, but among them are also representations of Christ, the Virgin, and still-unidentified saints and monks. In Rembrandt's typical fashion, the

Quarto Publishing PLC How Art is Made
Book SynopsisHow Art Is Made looks at renowned works of art from across the centuries and around the globe and asks the intriguingly simple question – how were these works actually made? Divided into two sections – materials and methods – each chapter showcases a single work of art which demonstrates the mastery and innovative use of a single material or method, from oil paint, pastel and pencil, to woodcut, litho and impasto. Each work is presented as the centerpiece of a capsule history, while comparative works are also included to help amplify our understanding. How, for example, did Michelangelo paint the Sistine Chapel fresco, or Turner become such a master of watercolor? How did Warhol turn so effectively to screen printing, and how does Yayoi Kusama create such beguiling 'infinity rooms'? Getty Trust Publications Rene Magritte: The Artist's Materials
Book SynopsisRene Magritte (1898-1967) is the most famous Belgian artist of the twentieth century and a celebrated representative of the Surrealist movement. Much has been written about his practices, artistic community, and significance within the history of modernism, but little has been documented regarding his process. Though he was reluctant to discuss his techniques and materials, practical concerns over media and cost shaped his output and legacy. This volume examines fifty oil paintings made by Magritte between 1921 and 1967, now held at the Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium. This technical study of his works using noninvasive scientific imaging and chemical analysis reveals the artist's painting materials, his habit of overpainting previous compositions, and the origins and mechanisms of surface and pigment degradation. Of interest to conservators, scientists, curators, and enthusiasts of twentieth-century art, this book expands our understanding of Magritte the artist and provides new and useful findings that will inform strategies for the future care of his works.

Figure 1 Publishing Gathie Falk: Variations
Book SynopsisGathie Falk: Revelations, published on the occasion of the retrospective exhibition curated by Sarah Milroy, investigates the career of a legendary Canadian artist. Now in her nineties, Gathie Falk was born in 1928 in Brandon, Manitoba, settling finally in Vancouver, where she established herself as one of Canada’s most visionary and experimental artists. Flying horses, rows of potted conifers festooned with blossoms and ribbons, floating cabbages, piles of glossy apples, gentlemen’s brogues presented in reliquary style, expanses of water, or burgeoning flower beds exploding with color—these have been the manifestations of Falk’s rampant imagination as she has explored the disciplines of painting, ceramic, performance art and installation over the span of a half century. In all her works, effulgence and order are held in a dynamic tension as she works through her generative themes and variations.A trailblazer on all fronts, she has brought a rich sensibility to bear on her observations of the everyday, perceptions often tinged with the surreal and the uncanny. From her fruit piles to the landmark performances of her early career, to her extended pursuit of themes with variations in her painting practice —expanses of water dazzling with light, riotous flower borders set against cement sidewalks, night skies pierced by starlight or obscured by clouds—she finds the wondrous in the routine world around her, pursuing her work with a modesty and diligence that reflects her Russian Mennonite heritage. The publication includes an introduction by McMichael Chief Curator Sarah Milroy, lead essay by Vancouver curator and writer Daina Augaitis (who examines her performance and installation works in a national and international context), and a host of other artists and writers, rising to the occasion of this career-spanning survey. This catalogue summarizes an extraordinary career, with full page images of her artworks and rarely seen archival photos of the artist’s studio, performance works, and Falk herself. For more than sixty years, Falk has generated work of extraordinary thematic integrity and material invention. This publication will illuminate those connections across disciplines, while also tracing the artist’s journey from youth to old age—from the lushness of the fruit piles, with their sensuous surfaces and dazzling colors, to the sepulchral hush of the night skies.

Search Press Ltd Painting Portraits in Oils: Capturing Character
Book SynopsisRob Wareing has built a formidable international reputation as a portrait artist. This is his first book, and here he draws on over 40 years' experience to provide a complete guide to painting portraits in oils. In Rob's view, the most effective way to capture character is by working from life rather than photographs, and to follow the alla prima method to create a painting in one sitting. Starting with a fascinating overview of the subject, Rob then guides the reader through the materials he uses, explains how to pose and light the sitter, and how to prepare the work area before starting to paint. This is followed by detailed coverage of design and composition, the importance of proportions, and the painting process itself – from colour mixing through to finishing a painting without over-working. With clear, step-by-step demonstrations and numerous examples of the author's work throughout, this book provides both an expert guide to portrait painting and a unique insight into the working methods of one of the world's leading portrait painters.Trade ReviewSought-after tutor, and The Artist contributor, Rob Wareing, draws on 40 years of experience for his first book, Painting Portraits in Oils. Working from life, Rob encourages students to complete their painting in one sitting. His alla prima method is explained here in great detail, from the initial overview of the subject and preparing your work area to how to post and light the sitter. Every stage of the process is covered – composition, proportions, colour mixing and skin tones, to finishing touches – with clear step-by-step demonstrations and plenty of the artist's work included throughout. * The Artist *Acclaimed portrait artist Rob Wareing shares more than 40 years of experience in his first book, Painting Portraits in Oils. If you're ready for a new challenge, discover how to paint a subject from life, beginning with the materials needed, how to light and pose your sitter, to the painting process itself. * Crafts Beautiful *Portraiture in Oils. Difficult, messy, best left to the professionals. And, you know what, I wouldn't disagree. Until now, right up to the moment I discovered this amazing guide. Rob is a portrait painter with an international reputation and some four decades' of experience. What impressed me most about this book is how Rob breaks what is indeed a complex subject, down into easily-understood parts. You can (and should) get the sense of a book by flicking quickly through its pages. This one is not just phenomenally unintimidating, but actually welcoming. So how is this sleight of hand achieved? Simple lessons – one thing at a time, carefully graded stages. Let's look at the first few: Materials (of course), Planning, Preparation, Composition, Lighting, Studies. There are plenty of examples and illustrations, but this is about getting to know them. This not only puts both of you at ease, but also helps you understand character and expressions. Groundwork, you see. The rest of the book proceeds in the same way. Rob teaches specific painting skills – facial features, hard and soft edges (even how to keep the sitting the right length) through examples and simple exercises. Rob is nothing if not a patient teacher and we're some 100 pages in before a full sitting appears and, by now, you'll be ready for the heavy lifting. Even here, Rob takes things slowly (you can with oils), taking time over drawing, initial paint layers, construction of features and the final refining. This is a careful and believable book; perhaps its greatest trick is to convince you that you really can do what you thought wasn't possible. -- Henry Malt * Paint Magazine *This beautifully produced book takes us through the stages of painting oil portraits from life. From materials and equipment, choosing a model, composition, lighting, achieving a likeness, values, edges, and colour, to step-by-step demonstrations of the whole process, the book is packed with great tips and advice. The sections showing how to avoid common mistakes, like making the nose too long, are particularly useful. Everything is well illustrated with photos, and explained clearly. Anyone wanting to learn to paint portraits from life, or to improve their skills, would find lots of advice and inspiration here. Although the book is primarily concerned with painting 'alla prima', (in one sitting), there's plenty of information which would equally apply to other types of portrait, and to other subjects and mediums. It's a book that I'm sure will become a well used friend in future. -- Sarah Ledger * Amazon *Oil portraits are often regarded as the highest form of art, certainly one to be taken with the utmost seriousness. Capturing a likeness as well as the character of yout subject requires planning, preparation and persistence and is not for the faint-hearted. Rob's four decades of experience have imbued him with a deep understanding not merely of the subject, but of the processes involved. This is a thoroughly researched and presented course that teaches you everything you need to know progressively. Explanations are succeeded by exercises until the final sitting, so that you understand what you're trying to do and how to work before getting to grips with real people. Such a solid grounding can only lead to confidence and success. Rob makes light of learning and his thorough approach is never hard work, but rather a journey of discovery. If you've ever wanted to try your hand at portraiture, there's no better place to get started. -- SAA * SAA *Painting portraits in oils is generally regarded as one of the highest art forms, something refined, complex and generally best left to the specialist. That’s hardly surprising as oils do require a fair amount of equipment. Finding suitable sitters, as well as the little matter of getting a worthwhile likeness, are considerable obstacles for the amateur. So how do you set about getting started? Until now, that’s been the conundrum. There have been few books and those that exist have been, well, rather so-so. This is different. Rob is a portrait artist with considerable experience, but he also has a YouTube channel where he posts demonstrations, and this experience shows. This is a book aimed at the needs of the learner rather than at the subject of portraiture itself. It’s a subtle but important difference. Open the pages at random and you’ll find yourself in the middle of a complete project. Look further and you’ll struggle to find the smaller lessons and exercises you’d be expecting. This is, in part at least, an extension of his online method. However, the idea of not having to wade through pages of eyes, ears, mouths and hands has an appeal, as long as it works. Portraiture is a language and has a grammar – there are technicalities you need to know as part of the foundations and to short-circuit those can be dangerous. Rob, however, is a patient and thorough explainer and all these foundations are here, but he manages to make them interesting. All those details come up both in the projects and also discussions of various approaches – mixing colours, preparing canvases, getting to know your subject. There are examples on every page that precisely illustrate each point that’s being made. The whole process is intensely practical and Rob manages to make what is genuinely a complex subject seem, if not easy (that would be sleight of hand), at least manageable. Knowing the limits of what you can teach is perhaps Rob’s greatest skill and this is a truly remarkable piece of work. -- Henry Malt * Artbookreview.net *Painting portraits in oils is often regarded as the highest form of art, and also not to be tackled by any other than the specialist. In this book, Rob - who has some four decades of experience - takes on a massive and daunting subject and, without trivialising, succeeds in making it manageable. This is an achievement that should be celebrated in itself. There are no sleights of hand, quick fixes or shortcuts. Rather, from a deep understanding of approaches and working processes, he adopts a methodical path that breaks everything down into a series of comprehensible steps. From getting to know your sitter to mental and technical preparation, basic skills, colour and values, everything works up to a final study and sitting. Each stage is packed with examples and exercises and, by taking a visual approach, Rob leads from the front, allowing the build-up to appear before your very eyes. -- Henry Malt * The Artist *I am quite new to oil painting and have only ever attempted landscapes. This book is well written and contains just about everything you need to know about painting portraits. I can’t wait to get started. Illustrated with lovely coloured photos the author gives step-by-step instruction on how to construct your painting with whole chapters on composition, materials, mixing your colours, using light and dark values, capturing light, angles, edges, proportions and common mistakes. The only other thing that I felt could have been included is a section on the painting's background, how and when to paint it without distracting from the main portrait etc -- Lyla Horley * Amazon Customer Review *Table of ContentsForeword 6 Introduction 8 Working from life 10 What makes a portrait? 12 Materials 22 Composing your paintings 34 Preparation 36 Drawing and painting 56 Drawing skills 58 Painting alla prima 70 Values 82 Colour 92 Skin tone 106 The sitting 116 The Portrait 118 Going further 134 Other types of portrait 136 Settings and background 156 Index 160

The answer is that they both have character, and capturing that is what this book is about. We've met Adebanji Alade before as an often quite fast-working sketcher. It turns out that he's an oil painter of considerable skill as well. That he can also present his work with clarity makes this an absolute delight. Sensibly, the book is divided into two distinct halves and there is no sleight of hand trying to connect studio portraits with outdoor work in all weathers. Both contain a wealth of practical advice about ways of working, use of colour and how to interact with people. Although there are urban landscapes here, it's the people on the streets that make the strongest connection between the two sections. This is an enjoyable journey with a thoroughly likeable companion, enhanced by the superb quality of production. -- Henry Malt * The Artist, March Issue *Table of ContentsIntroduction Materials Sketching with oils My way – techniques and approach: how I paint with oils Portraits Project 1: Homeless person portrait Figures Project 2: Child playing Crowds Project 3: Urban scene Landscapes Project 4: Summer evening light Urban landscapes Project 5: Rain and reflections Seascapes Project 6: Harbour skyline Afterword Index

Unicorn Publishing Group A Singular Man: A Documented Life of the Artist
Book SynopsisDelving into Frederick Sandys's unconventional life, Betty Elzea's research reveals much about his complicated and often scandalous relationships. Born and educated in Norwich with an artisan background, Sandys was bohemian by nature, though from necessity, to the world at large, he appeared genteel and respectable. Unfortunately disorganised, un-businesslike and preferring to live alone as a bachelor in lodgings, he struggled to support two growing families of illegitimate children. From youth, developing skills as a draughtsman and painter, he moved to London, meeting Dante Gabriel Rossetti and the Pre-Raphaelites and their associates, while keeping a foothold in Norwich where he maintained friendships and enjoyed the support of the Norfolk gentry and several notable Norwich industrialists. Norfolk landscape painting and nature studies led to commissioned portraiture which became his main source of income. He is known for depictions of beautiful women in legendary disguises as well as meticulously-detailed portraits of elderly women. He also pioneered a new type of large-scale portrait drawing in chalks.
