Cornell University Press Problem Solver
Book SynopsisWinner of the Independent Press Award in PsychologyOur decisions are expressions of who we are and how we move through the world. Rarely, though, do we examine our decisions or even look inward to consider the psychology of our decision-making. Instead, we often make decisions based on what we call instinct (which relies on cognitive bias), false assumptions, mis-remembering, and mental mistakes. Truthfully, we don''t see the world as it is; we see it as we are. We can develop self-knowledge about our decision-making styles. We can wake ourselves up to how biases cloud our judgment and impede good decision-makingand we can counter bias. From there, we can transform our decision-making habits to make better big decisions alone and together. Purdue University Press Managing Risk and Complexity through Open
Book SynopsisAlong with increased complexities in work and life in general in the twenty-first century come new and dangerous risks to workers, customers, and the general public. Drawing on decades of experience as a researcher and consultant for a range of organizations and individuals in high-risk domains, the author of this book presents a powerful theory of open communication and teamwork. This unites a range of communication practices and principles that have proven to combat risk and complexity in organizations. The book initially focuses on NASA, an organization that experiences and engages with high complexity and risk daily. As a participant-observer in the Apollo program, the author witnessed pioneering communication practices that, for example, empowered engineers with “automatic responsibility” for any technical problem they perceived. It was partly the failure to follow such protocols that resulted in the catastrophes experienced in the Challenger and Columbia tragedies, as the author shows.Using the lessons learned from the space program, the book then explores complexity and risk in medicine, aviation, the fighting of forest fires, and homelessness, again consistently finding communication practices that worked and did not work. Based on detailed research conducted over several decades, the book presents a unified theory linked to generally applicable communication practices. Case studies include the results of an international experiment of surgery conducted in ten countries that produced a highly significant reduction of deaths and infections in Africa, India, and other parts of the world, to the creation of innovative communication practices that significantly reduced risks in the US aviation industry.

Society for Human Resource Management Developing Business Acumen
Book SynopsisThe small business HR professional has a unique work environment. For one, HR departments in small businesses are typically quite small, often consisting of only one or two employees. Because of this, these HR professionals are usually expected to be generalists able to answer all HR-related questions. But because there are only one or two of them, they are also expected to be specialists in those same areas. With so much responsibility, how do small business HR professionals have time to focus on their own professional development? And where to start? Surveys demonstrates that building career-long business, interpersonal, and leadership competencies should be the goal of every HR practitioner. Business Acumen falls within the first category. An HR professional who understands the business as a whole is better equipped to make decisions that positively affect the entire business. HR professionals in small businesses have more opportunities to do this than in larger organizations simply because the smaller size helps reduce the barriers to knowledge of various functions. The purpose of Developing Business Acumen is to provide the small business HR professional with a practical, hit-the-ground-running guide to becoming a more effective business partner. The reader will learn the elements of business acumen, such as: Reading and understanding a company's P&L statement; Formulating and tracking metrics that help implement HR programs; Communicating more effectively with other departments and throughout the organization; Developing mutually beneficial relationships with sales and marketing; Conducting environmental scans that can lead to positively influencing the organization; and Expanding an entrepreneurial spirit to enhance corporate culture. Texas A & M University Press Oilfield Trash: Life and Labor in the Oil Patch
Book SynopsisWhen the first gusher blew in at Spindletop, near Beaumont, Texas, in 1901, petroleum began to supplant cotton and cattle as the economic engine of the state and region. Very soon, much of the workforce migrated from the cotton field to the oilfield, following the lure of the wealth being created by black gold. The early decades of the twentieth century witnessed the development of an oilfield culture, as these workers defined and solidified their position within the region’s social fabric. Over time, the work force grew more professionalized, and technological change attracted a different type of labourer.Bobby D. Weaver grew up and worked in the oil patch. Now, drawing on oral histories supplemented and confirmed by other research, he tells the colourful stories of the workers who actually brought oil wealth to Texas. Drillers, shooters, toolies, pipeliners, teamsters, roustabouts, tank builders, roughnecks . . . each of them played a role in the frenzied, hard-driving lifestyle of the boomtowns that sprouted overnight in association with each major oil discovery.Weaver tracks the differences between company workers and contract workers. He details the work itself and the ethos that surrounds it. He highlights the similarities and differences from one field to another and traces changing aspects of the work over time. Above all, Oilfield Trash captures the unique voices of the labouring people who worked long, hard hours, often risking life and limb to keep the drilling rigs “turning to the right”.Trade Review…welcome addition to the relatively sparse literature on the history of work in the Texas oil industry. Bobby D. Weaver draws on an abundant supply of interviews and his own insights as a former roughneck to paint a vivid picture of life among the state's independent upstream drilling contractors…accessible descriptions of work in the oil patch…an important contribution to an understudied aspect of southern labor history."" - Journal of Southern History“…the personal stories of the men who labored in and around the oilfields . . . is densely packed with informative tidbits that describe the hardships experienced as part of daily life in a succession of Texas oilfield and boomtowns beginning on the Texas Coast and moving into West Texas. The reader learns not just about the men’s lives but also about the professionalization that took place in the oil patch…enriches the book with explanations of oilfield slang and terminology. This is an important book. Weaver’s book provides a unique glimpse into the actual lives of the 'oilfield trash.” - Southwestern Historical Quarterly

Information Age Publishing Violence At Work: What Everyone Should Know
Book SynopsisEvery day we wake up, send our children to school, go to work, attend sports or other entertainment events, etc. Then suddenly the unexpected happens. This day will not end like yesterday and a thousand other days. Our lives are changed forever. Suddenly we realize how precious and fragile life is, and we question whether we could have done something to prevent this emergency event. We have become accustomed to violence, but we do not need to accept it. Our study of workplace violence, terrorism, and other forms of dysfunctional behavior associated with work suggests that both managers and non-managers would like to reduce the risks associated with violence at the workplace. The book is designed to help do just that. You can be underpaid, overworked, or get fired even though you are performing well. You can be a victim of sabotage or harassment even though—or sometimes because!—you are doing an outstanding job. You can be a victim on company premises of an angry, psychologically impaired, or chemically dependent manager, non-manager, former coworker, spouse, or even a stranger. The violent act you face may have stemmed from coworker interaction, worker-boss relations, a sick corporate environment, or even family problems.Top executives and other managerial and non-managerial personnel clearly need to take steps toward reducing the threat of workplace violence. Numerous studies have been done regarding workplace problems, resulting in numerous books and professional journal articles. Some books, articles, workshops, seminars, and the like proffer general advice to managers. However, virtually all of that advice has come from psychologists, physicians, and lawyers. And very little counsel is provided to non-manager employees on dealing with problems that involve co-workers or managers. What has been lacking is advice that would reduce the threat of workplace violence and therefore (1) reduce stress, (2) enable organizations to develop potential competitive advantages in terms of their personnel and productivity, and (3) guide organizational personnel in their efforts to solve problems before they culminate in violent actions. This book fills that need. We believe it is the first to offer both general and specific information and advice from a managerial point of view. The authors have spent their careers intimately involved with the practice, teaching, and research on management and organizations.

Information Age Publishing Perspectives on Gender and Work
Book SynopsisFew time periods in the past five decades match the intensity of intergroup conflict that people around the world are currently experiencing. Polarized attitudes around various sociopolitical issues, such as gender equality and immigration, have dominated the media and our lives. Furthermore, these powerful social dynamics have also impacted the places where we work and intensified existing strains on workers and workplaces. To address these issues and improve organizational climates, more theories, research and collaborations to understand these phenomena are needed. The volumes in this series will describe and instigate scholarship that advances our understanding of diversity in organizations. In recognition of the centennial anniversary of the ratification of the 19th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, which granted American women the right to vote and the subsequent struggle for women of color to exercise it, this volume features the personal narratives of recognized scholars in the field who have advanced understanding of gender at work. In this way, we appreciate, and gain perspective on, the rewards and challenges of this essential scholarship and the lives of those who engage in it. Information Age Publishing Human Resources Management and Ethics:
Book SynopsisHuman Resources Management and Ethics: Responsibilities, Actions, Issues, and Experiences, explores and provides an in-depth look at the responsibilities, actions, issues and experiences related to HRM and ethics for individual employees, organizations and the broader society. Like other departments in the broader organization HRM professionals will need to increasingly demonstrate how they contribute to an organization’s ethical orientation and overall performance or success. While the ethical challenges, trends, and issues impacting employees, organizations and HRM professionals will continue to change over the years (consider the recent ethical challenges related cybersecurity and data breaches) the bottom-line of organization success is the clear reality that doing the right thing or institutionalizing an ethical culture or character is just as important to various stakeholders. The chapters in this book provide an updated, current and future look at the relationship between HRM and ethics and across various sectors or organizations (i.e. public, private, not-for-profit, academic, etc.). That is, this book discusses the ever evolving role of HRM professionals to include discussion of how the profession continues to take on more responsibility for developing and institutionalizing an ethical culture in their organizations, industries and the broader society. The book also contributes to the need for ongoing dialogue, discussion or insights offered by HRM experts on what HRM professionals and their organizations can do in the face of ethical expectations, challenges and scandals. In the end, the book is intended to increase our understanding of the ethical responsibilities, actions, issues and experiences that arise both within HRM and in HRM’s interactions with individuals and organizations.

Edward Elgar Publishing Ltd International Handbook on Diversity Management at
Book SynopsisThis second edition contains 14 countries as opposed to 16 in the first edition, but is essentially different as it not only includes updates for the countries in common, but also six new ones including Australia, Finland, Japan, New Zealand, Nigeria and Russia. It is, therefore, essentially a complement to the first edition. The editors suggest that one of the most significant effects of globalization has been to widen the scope of diversity management as workforces are becoming more diverse, with migrants posing a particular challenge in some countries. Examination at national level is crucial as anti-discrimination legislation and its implementation vary from country to country, especially with respect to whether or not positive discrimination is a feature. Above all the picture is changing over time. Hence the need for this new edition.'- Peter J. Sloane, Swansea University, UK and Flinders University, Australia'By covering the diversity practices in 14 different countries this Handbook makes evident the need to consider diversity management from a global and local standpoint. What is legal and standard practice towards equality in one country can be viewed as discriminative and unlawful just across the border. With such complex reality, the authors of this book make an incredible job of providing the reader with detailed and useful information on how to approach diversity 'glocally' (that is, in multiple geographies). The book, in a way, is a global travel guide for diversity management that benefits both business managers and HR practitioners operating in the international arena.'- Simon L. Dolan, ESADE Business School, Spain and Editor-in-Chief, Cross Cultural Management: An International JournalManaging and developing diversity is on the political and business agenda in many countries; therefore diversity management has become an area of knowledge and practice in its own right. Yet all too often it is referred to as a unifying concept, as if it were to be interpreted uniformly across all cultures and countries. The contributors to this volume expertly examine the relationship between diversity management and equality legislation within the different participating countries' national contexts. They advocate that such separation and sequencing between equality at work and diversity management is far from natural. The second edition of this important reference work provides important updates and new perspectives on the cases constituting the first edition as well as including contributions from a number of new countries: Australia, Finland, Japan, New Zealand, Nigeria and Russia. Countries that have been updated and expanded are Austria, Canada, France, India, Italy, the Netherlands, South Africa and the United Kingdom. This Handbook will be greatly appreciated by scholars who wish to better contextualize their research and will also provide policy-makers with benchmark data regarding equal treatment and diversity as understood in other countries.Contributors: I. Addressing diversity as a transnational force while maintaining an intra-national focus allows the collection of chapters to offer a processual understanding of population flows and, concurrently, a clear understanding of the diversity of diversity - institutionally and demographically - and its changing patterns over time. Altogether the book excels in fulfilling its conceptual claims for understanding diversity management at work: contextually, relationally and dynamically.'--Marta B. The volume will be a very useful resource for scholars, policy-makers, consultants, and business leaders interested in diversity and equality.'--Bernardo M. Liverpool University Press Suicide Voices: Labour Trauma in France
Book SynopsisThis book examines the phenomenon of work suicides in France and asks why, at the present historical juncture, conditions of work can push individuals to take their own lives. During the 2000s, France experienced what commentators have described as a ‘suicide epidemic’, whereby increasing numbers of workers in the face of extreme pressures of work, chose to kill themselves. The book analyses a corpus of testimonial material linked to 66 suicide cases across three large French companies during the period from 2005 to 2015. It aims to consider what the extreme and subjective act of self-killing, narrated in suicide letters, can tell us about the contemporary economic order and its impact on flesh and blood bodies. What do rising work-related suicides reveal about conditions of human labour in the twenty-first century? Does neoliberal economics condition a desire for suicide? How do suicidal individuals describe the causes and motivations of their act? Combining critical perspectives from sociology, history, testimony studies, economics, cultural studies and public health, the book raises critical questions about the human costs of the shift to a finance-driven neoliberal order and its everyday effects within the French workplace.Trade ReviewReviews'This book offers us an exhaustive and penetrating analysis of the questions posed by workplace suicide. Particularly impressive is the ''diversity'' of epistemological perspectives so critical to today's global and transnational context.' --Stella Nkomo, University of Pretoria, South AfricaTable of ContentsContents: Introduction Lize A.E Booysen, Judith K. Edward Elgar Publishing Ltd Bullying and Harassment at Work: An Innovative
Book SynopsisBullying, harassment and other unacceptable workplace behaviors pose significant problems for organizations. This exploration of the issue notes that factors from within the organization may help determine who and why some individuals become targets and others become bullies. The authors explore different types of behaviors where managers and management, as well as employees, are the problem. Each chapter has anecdotes scattered throughout and contains a ‘mini-case,’ review questions, ‘action’ items, and two longer cases, all based on actual events. The authors present a unique framework (V-REEL®) to assist individuals and organizations in analyzing the organization’s environment in an effort to eradicate the negative behavior forces that contribute to bad behavior. In addition, they have included a glossary of important terms, a bibliography of useful references, a survey that may be used to assess conditions in the organization, and a listing of organizations that provide information or assistance. These various pedagogical tools enable the book to be used by human resource professionals, managers, employees, and academics as individuals or in groups to both avoid and eradicate bullying and harassment at work.Trade Review‘As a finance professional, I really enjoyed how Van Fleet and Van Fleet applied Multidimensional Scaling to demonstrate just how much commonality exists between Bullying and Harassment thus creating "B≈H". In addition, they clearly demonstrate a very clever application of the V-REEL® framework and how it can significantly help organizations and employees address "B≈H". Their application can help establish baselines across 5 criteria areas and provide organizations a means to track their on-going progress.’ -- Jack Spitzer, Plexus Worldwide‘Bullying and Harassment at Work: An Innovative Approach to Understanding and Prevention by David and Ella Van Fleet delivers as the title promises. Definitions, descriptions, and examples help the reader understand the roles and responsibilities of the individual, the organization, and society in curtailing bullying and harassment and moving to functional, supportive workplaces. Therefore, this book will work equally well in the classroom or in corporate training settings. I especially like the idea of asking the reader to write out their answers to questions before reading a chapter and then to answer again after reading.’ -- Abagail McWilliams, UIC College of Business Administration, US‘This book has a structure that demystifies a complex topic, is easy to read, and is embedded with scholarly details that would allow people at any level of the organization to benefit. The first-level managers in my organization will find great guidance in understanding the larger implications of how their day-to-day simple actions can impact how positional power unbalances play in deteriorating the quality of work life. The methods in chapter seven, V-REEL®, will provide me with a playbook in putting together policies and objectives, that work with the small yet global nature of Tsquared Robotics LLC. I found the book to provide insight. My spouse and I have initiated objective conversations as she leads the Woman Resources Group at her company. I will even go as far as recommending the book as an HR guide to setting accountability and modeling good workplace conduct that transcends cultural and perceptive boundaries.’ -- Tani Tambila, Tsquared Robotics LLC‘The existence and effects of bullying and harassment in organizations are widespread and deeply caustic as eroding factors for both morale and performance. This book's effectiveness as a tool to help understand, mitigate, and eliminate bullying and harassment is greatly appreciated from my perspective. In an ideal world, managers and executives would not need this book. Because we do not live in an ideal world, my recommendation would be for managers and executives to keep a copy of this book nearby and occasionally return to it as a reminder of their responsibilities regarding the health and well-being of the people surrounding them. It has become part of my library of essential books for understanding how to be an effective leader.’ -- David Flint, Value Creation Company and author of Think Beyond Value–Building Strategy to Win‘The scenarios addressed in this book are both invaluable and timely. In this day and age, if companies are not thinking about these types of workplace situations, it is only a matter of time before they will. This book gives great insight and recommendations on how to deal with these situations while lowering risk and improving the workplace environment.’ -- Lloyd Church, Raymond James‘Unacceptable behavior in the workplace, at first glance, seems intuitive to recognize and address. If it were only that simple. The brilliance of this book is that it reveals the nuances of bullying and harassing behaviors. It is an evidence-based treatise on how to analyze, decide, and lead organizations in this critical time.’ -- Mike D’Onofrio, Bristol Myers SquibbTable of ContentsContents: Preface 1. Edward Elgar Publishing Ltd Handbook of Qualitative Research Methodologies in
Book SynopsisThis comprehensive Handbook explores both traditional and contemporary interpretations of qualitative research in the workplace, examining a variety of foundational and innovative qualitative methodological approaches.Expert international contributors discuss how organisations have undergone substantial changes, prompting novel research agendas, which, in turn, required inventive applications of qualitative methodologies in a range of workplace contexts. The Handbook comprises three parts, which consider the foundational knowledge of qualitative methodologies; innovative additions to these methodologies; and their application in a range of workplace contexts and disciplines, including management, health and education policy. Chapters focus on context and the role of reflexivity as central issues for decision making about appropriate methodologies, highlighting how qualitative research has responded to contemporary developments in workplaces, such as the global dispersal of organisations, flexible work arrangements and changes to stakeholder relationships.Analysing the challenges and opportunities for conducting qualitative research in modern organisations, this Handbook will be critical reading for academics and students of organisation studies and qualitative research methods, particularly those with a focus on business and management.Trade Review‘This Handbook provides workplace researchers essential resources from a wide array of qualitative methodologies and methods, ranging from grounded theory to discourse analysis to narrative inquiry. Co-editors Crossman and Bordia have assembled a rich collection of chapters detailing foundation approaches for studying the individual employee’s voice up to the larger institution’s collective stories. This reference by international contributors is an ideal companion for qualitative and mixed methods researchers in business, organization, management, and the psychology and sociology of work.’ -- - Johnny Saldaña, Professor Emeritus, Arizona State University, US‘Organizations are facing an era of unprecedented turbulence and complexity. The Handbook of Qualitative Research Methodologies in Workplace Contexts provides a very welcome potpourri of both innovative and tried-and-true qualitative methods for surfacing emergent issues and their vexing dynamics. The diversity of authors enables the Handbook to highlight the tensions among various methods, helping the would-be qualitative researcher think through what might work best for their own projects.’ -- - Blake Ashforth, Arizona State University, USTable of ContentsContents: 1 Introduction to the Handbook of Qualitative Research Methodologies in Workplace Contexts 1 Sarbari Bordia and Joanna Crossman PART I FOUNDATIONS 2 An overview of Grounded Theory aka The Grounded Theory Method (GTM) 5 Antony Bryant 3 Action research – double the outcome 30 Colin Bradley 4 Philosophical paradigms underlying discourse analysis: methodological implications 47 Muatasim Ismaeel 5 Action research – for practitioners and researchers 67 Mary Casey and David Coghlan 6 The power, scope and flexibility of grounded theory research for business 82 Kelley O’Reilly PART II INNOVATIONS 7 Using fiction in and for research: embodied experiences, performative data, engagement and impact 99 Marsha Berry and Craig Batty 8 Testimonio: artful inquiry into counter-stories of people on the margins 114 Jennifer Green 9 An interdisciplinary approach to secondary qualitative data analysis: what, why and how 133 Leonor Rodriguez 10 What’s the story?
