  • Fray

The University of Chicago Press Fray

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisIn 1974, women in a feminist consciousness-raising group in Eugene, Oregon, formed a mock organization called the Ladies Sewing Circle and Terrorist Society. Emblazoning its logo onto t-shirts, the group wryly envisioned female collective textile making as a practice that could upend conventions, threaten state structures, and wreak political havoc. Elaborating on this example as a prehistory to the more recent phenomenon of craftivism the politics and social practices associated with handmaking Fray explores textiles and their role at the forefront of debates about process, materiality, gender, and race in times of economic upheaval. Closely examining how amateurs and fine artists in the United States and Chile turned to sewing, braiding, knotting, and quilting amid the rise of global manufacturing, Julia Bryan-Wilson argues that textiles unravel the high/low divide and urges us to think flexibly about what the politics of textiles might be. Her case studies from the 1970s through the 1990s including the improvised costumes of the theater troupe the Cockettes, the braided rag rugs of US artist Harmony Hammond, the thread-based sculptures of Chilean artist Cecilia Vicuna, the small hand-sewn tapestries depicting Pinochet's torture, and the NAMES Project AIDS Memorial Quilt are often taken as evidence of the inherently progressive nature of handcrafted textiles. Fray, however, shows that such methods are recruited to often ambivalent ends, leaving textiles very much in the fray of debates about feminized labor, protest cultures, and queer identities; the malleability of cloth and fiber means that textiles can be activated, or stretched, in many ideological directions. The first contemporary art history book to discuss both fine art and amateur registers of handmaking at such an expansive scale, Fray unveils crucial insights into how textiles inhabit the broad space between artistic and political poles high and low, untrained and highly skilled, conformist and disobedient, craft and art.

The University of Chicago Press Redefining Geek Bias and the Five Hidden Habits

    3 in stock

Book SynopsisTrade Review"Through extensive interviews, fieldwork, and surveys, [Puckett] uncovers what it takes for teenagers to learn new technologies . . . Overall, this is a thoroughly researched book that nonetheless presents a set of easy-to-understand and actionable conclusions. It should have broad appeal both among sociologists interested in inequality as well as among educators, policy makers, and parents." * Social Forces *"Redefining Geek will serve as an essential guide for a generation of educators who are grappling with how best to teach and lead in this technological age. Puckett draws on a deep data set to redefine what it means to be competent with technology, bust a pile of myths much in need of busting, and offer clear steps for helping students develop the habits they need to succeed in life, work, and play. This book will guide how we tackle digital inequality and support the learning process of young people of all races, ethnicities, and genders for years to come." -- John Palfrey, president, John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation"Puckett is a terrific writer with a broad, precise, empathetic, and thoroughly researched account of technology education and where it falls short. In Redefining Geek, Puckett carefully dispels myths about natural technological ability and grit that perpetuate existing inequalities. She offers practical and innovative ideas to make STEM more inclusive. Providing fresh analysis with new stories and actionable examples, Redefining Geek is a smart, engaging look at what needs to change about education in order to bring about technology that benefits us all." -- Joanne McNeil, author of Lurking: How a Person Became a User "Redefining Geek is essential reading for educators. Using evidence from extensive fieldwork with students and teachers in STEM programs across the US, Puckett deftly dismantles popular assumptions about the origins of technological ability. Through poignant quotes and engaging stories, Puckett reveals that neither 'natural' talent nor 'grit' can explain why some students are able to navigate the changing technological landscape and learn new technology tools and platforms. Instead, and building on prior research in the science of teaching and learning, Puckett shows that technological competence is the product of five key habits. These include: 1) being willing to try and fail, 2) knowing how to manage frustration and boredom, 3) using models to think through difficult problems, 4) asking why things work the way they do (design-based thinking), and 5) asking how things can be done more quickly or more easily (efficiency-based thinking). By uncovering the habit-based origins of technological competence, and by revealing how successful programs cultivate these habits in students (including in low-income students, Black, Latinx, and Native American students, and girls of all backgrounds), Redefining Geek offers a new way forward for those interested in tackling longstanding inequalities in STEM." -- Jessica McCrory Calarco, author of Negotiating Opportunities"Through her solid research and her experiences with working with diverse student learners, Puckett does an exemplary job in helping readers understand and rethink what it means to be technologically competent. This is especially important considering our world is more reliant on technology due to the COVID-19 pandemic and having tech skills is essential. This knowledge and her guidance—coupled with a thorough examination of how our biases can further exacerbate the digital divide—is beneficial in designing tech educational curriculums and programs that are more inclusive and supportive to the diverse communities that they are serving. A must-read for any professional seeking to improve and advance technology education." -- Susanne Tedrick, author of Women of Color in Tech"Cassidy Puckett understands that the learning disposition--how students feel about learning—as well as their perceptions of their ability to learn--a sense of efficacy—are critical to learning outcomes. In Redefining Geek, Puckett introduces a set of learning habits to help students develop a growth mindset in STEM learning. Through sound research and sharp insights, Puckett makes a convincing case that it’s not only important that students learn how to use the technology available to them today but that they develop the habits and mindset that will support their ability to use and design with the technologies of the future." -- S. The University of Chicago Press Rethinking Americas Highways A 21stCentury Vision

    4 in stock

Book SynopsisAmericans spend hours every day sitting in traffic. And the roads they idle on are often rough and potholed, their exits, tunnels, guardrails, and bridges in terrible disrepair. According to transportation expert Robert Poole, this congestion and deterioration are outcomes of the way America provides its highways. Our twentieth-century model overly politicizes highway investment decisions, short-changing maintenance and often investing in projects whose costs exceed their benefits. In Rethinking America's Highways, Poole examines how our current model of state-owned highways came about and why it is failing to satisfy its customers. He argues for a new model that treats highways themselves as public utilitieslike electricity, telephones, and water supply. If highways were provided commercially, Poole argues, people would pay for highways based on how much they used, and the companies would issue revenue bonds to invest in facilities people were willing to pay for. Arguing for highwaTrade Review“Every policy wonk and politician interested in infrastructure should read Bob’s book.” -- Chris Edwards * CATO Institute *“While per-gallon fuel taxes served as a proxy for our highway needs in the past, the pending insolvency of the federal Highway Trust Fund proves that model to be unsustainable. As Poole suggests, there are clear paths to self-supporting infrastructure by seeing highways as an asset class, and by creating an environment that taps into now widely available global infrastructure investment funds. Poole offers a well-reasoned transition from the failing 20th-century highway model to one that can sustain and support our country for the 21st century.” -- Mary Peters, former US Secretary of Transportation“Robert Poole’s bold, innovative thinking on infrastructure could not come at a better time. He provides a comprehensive analysis of the endemic, seemingly intractable problems facing our nation’s infrastructure, and offers a practical set of solutions. He explains not only how the tolling and private participation used around the world can improve US transportation infrastructure, but how decades-old lessons from utility regulation will ensure that those policies are in the public interest. This book is a must-read for anyone wanting a clear policy guide for moving US infrastructure into the 21st century.” -- Rick Geddes, Cornell University“In Rethinking America’s Highways, Poole furthers his reputation as one of the world’s leading experts on infrastructure and public-private partnerships. In this book, he brilliantly demonstrates how an economic model for highways, rather than our current political approach, would unlock substantial value.” -- Stephen Goldsmith, Harvard University“Are politicians ever celebrated for preventing bridges and roads from crumbling? No, they are celebrated for cutting ribbons on brand-new infrastructure projects, regardless of their economic soundness over time. This is one reason I find Robert Poole’s argument in Rethinking America’s Highways so appealing. It is vitally important that we depoliticize infrastructure by turning state transportation departments into public utilities, a seemingly modest change that would have enormously beneficial consequences.” * National Review *Table of ContentsPreface Chapter 1. • Amber Waves

The University of Chicago Press Amber Waves

    4 in stock

Book SynopsisTrade Review"Relationships can be notoriously complicated, and our ancient bond with wheat is no exception. As Zabinski recounts in Amber Waves, it's been a rocky path over the millennia, replete with heartbreak, endless drama, and even an unlikely love affair. If it hadn't been for a capricious interloper named goatgrass mixing into wheat's gene pool half a million years ago, our daily staple of bread-not to mention birthday cakes, mac and cheese, and pepperoni pizza-might never have existed. . . . Amber Waves nimbly segues into a socio-agro primer, providing a crash course in genetics, plant breeding, and agronomy. The author . . . also provides a fascinating retrospective on some of our lesser-known food innovators. . . . Engaging. . . . Zabinksi is a reliably optimistic guide, pointing us toward a hopeful food future. 'As a species,' she observes, 'we have a stunning capacity for creativity and problem solving. Imagine if we focused all that capacity on optimizing agricultural production in the most environmentally sustainable way.' It's a towering opportunity for such a tiny, humble seed-but one that seems tantalizingly close to being within our grasp." * Wall Street Journal * "Wheat is a staple in the diets of cultures across the globe. But when and how did the first societies decide to consume grass seeds? Plant and soil ecologist Zabinski takes the discussion beyond history and anthropology to talk about the science of agriculture and the development of wheat production throughout the modern world. The more practical aspects of the crop are also discussed, such as why grass seeds are easier to store than other early cultivated grains. While the account focuses on wheat's history, there is a section that concentrates on the stress of the crop for a growing population. An abundance of endnotes and references indicate an extensively researched text, while the chronological narrative reads like a biography starting with ancient people and cultivation through the modern practices of manipulating food DNA. . . . This work will appeal to lay scientists, anthropologists, and consumers who wish to know more about the science behind this common dietary staple." * Library Journal * "A pleasant . . . account of the long history of humans and wheat. . . . Zabinski notes how agricultural practices have driven social and political organization, and speculates that wheat cultivation led to militarization, as armies were used to keep laborers in the fields and to protect farmers from outside raiders. In elaborating on the interconnections between wheat production and culture, she shares some worthwhile historical tidbits, such as how the need to grow wheat across North America's 'wide temperature and precipitation gradients' gave rise, in the nineteenth century, to breeding as a modern science, or how Hitler's invasion of the Soviet Union was motivated by his desire for Ukraine's fertile soils." * Publishers Weekly * "Deftly surveys both the biological and the social perspective in nine concise chapters, starting in deep time, with a quick summary of the evolution of plants, then moving swiftly through the first agricultural societies, the growth of city-states, the great empires of the classical and medieval world, and on into the modern era. Wheat is a silent but salient character, providing the energy needed to maintain growing concentrations of population, shaping systems of social organization needed to manage production and distribute food, and driving innovations in agriculture, such as crop rotation, irrigation, and the moldboard plow of the Middle Ages. . . . It's clearly an open-ended story, not just a tale of how humans have used a nutritious plant, writes Zabinski, but 'how that plant used us to take over the world.'" -- Laurence A. Marschall * Natural History * "The human relationship with wheat is the subject of Zabinski's short book Amber Waves, which presents itself as a 'biography' of the grain. . . . Zabinski, a plant and soil ecologist at Montana State University, seeks to tell 'a story of a group of grasses whose existence became complicated by its convergence with our own species and our never-ending need for more food'. The vast consumption of wheat today is linked to the fact that it is the main ingredient in so many convenience foods. If you want to satisfy hunger quickly and cheaply, the odds are that you will turn to a wheat-based food (unless you opt for potatoes, in the form of crisps or chips). You might buy a healthy wrap or an unhealthy burger or a pie or a sandwich or a slice of pizza or a tub of instant ramen or a samosa or a slice of toast or a bowl of bran flakes. Whichever choice you make, you will end up eating the same industrial wheat. No other grain comes in such a vast range of ready-to-eat foods. Yet it must have taken great perseverance and ingenuity for our Neolithic ancestors to add wheat to their diets." -- Bee Wilson * London Review of Books * "In this high-fiber read, plant ecologist Zabinski follows the evolution of wheat, from its wild origins to its highly modified existence as a staple of modern agriculture." * LitHub * "Zabinski has produced a tour de force with Amber Waves. From her work as a soil and plant ecologist at Montana State University she pulls together the fascinating biological and social history of wheat. It is a story of human ingenuity across thousands of years." -- Jenny Willan * Resurgence and Ecologist * "Wheat was among the first grains to be cultivated and it is now one of the most important staple crops in the world. In Amber Waves, Zabinski . . . tells the story of wheat from its origin, domestication, and genetic improvement, and the history of its production, processing, and trade. Moreover, Zabinski proposes that the biography of wheat is not simply the story of a crop-it is a thread in the history of humans seeking food security. . . . This story about the complex relationship between humans and crops should appeal to plant scientists in particular, and indeed the general public." * Nature Food * "For a sustainability-conscious readership, Zabinski looks at how wheat both enabled the food security necessary for civilization and created new ecological problems." * Publishers Weekly, "Spring 2020 Announcements: Science Top 10" * "Skillfully done. . . . I urge you to read Amber Waves by Zabinski, which is an excellent example of plants-and-people writing-and is also pretty good SciComm . . . " * Botany One * "Zabinski explores the history of wheat and society, and argues we must focus on optimizing agriculture in environmentally sustainable ways." * Climate & Capitalism * "The story of wheat is inextricably linked with that of humans. Zabinski's Amber Waves tells both. In fact, the author suggests this might be the tale of how wheat used humans to take over the world. . . . Zabinski's warm, down-to-earth style and whimsical analogies are so engaging that readers might not notice how much archaeology, soil chemistry, and molecular genetics they are absorbing. Biology students who found photosynthesis boring didn't have Zabinski as their instructor. . . . She tosses delicious tidbits into her literary soup, such as origin stories for Turkey Red and Red Fife, formerly the dominant types of wheat grown in the United States and Canada, respectively. . . . Amber Waves would make a good text for an introductory agriculture course-and for anyone who wants to understand how today's food is grown. Zabinski does not rail against current agricultural systems; nor does she give checklists of actions for readers to follow to become better food citizens. Instead, she starts at the beginnings of agriculture to explain why contemporary wheat has turned out the way it has, why humans now grow it as they do, and why these methods might not work so well in the future. She suggests that readers listen to the story carried in the whisper of the wheat stalks and think hard about how to make food systems more sustainable and equitable." * Issues in Science and Technology * "In a friendly and accessible style, Amber Waves rather cleverly integrates material about plant evolution and physiological processes into a narrative of the development of wheat, concentrating heavily on the early stages of the process of plant domestication, with asides into evolution, genetics, plant nutrition, gluten-related health issues, and the role of wheat in history and power politics. A balanced discussion of the Green Revolution and the future possibilities of wheat breeding bring the story up to date for anyone who wishes to learn more about the history of farming and about plants." -- Noel Kingsbury, author of "Hybrid: The History and Science of Plant Breeding" and "Garden Flora: The Natural and Cultural History of the Plants in Your Garden" "Zabinski not only offers a biography of the multiple species known as 'wheat' but presents their story in the context of the rise of civilization itself." -- Norman C. Book SynopsisTrade Review“Goodman tells a very personal tale of nine years spent in the American criminal justice system, through travesties and victories, large and small. . . . From his first encounter with a client to the moments when some clients received their guilty verdict from a jury and were escorted from the courtroom in handcuffs, Goodman skillfully weaves a true tale of insightful advocacy and compelling conclusions. . . . He draws us in to the sights, sounds, and smells of the criminal legal system, forcing us to experience it with him because otherwise we might prefer to avoid it and thus avoid questioning its presumptions.” * Los Angeles Review of Books *“[An] important work of pulling the curtain back on the immense value of often-maligned public defenders.” * Booklist *“As the title of Goodman’s sobering book graphically conveys, public defenders often feel that everyone’s against us. While offering a firsthand view of the endemic corruption, racism, and wholesale injustice regularly practiced by police, prosecutors, and judges in criminal courts, Goodman sets the record straight and captures the true essence of the many dedicated public defenders across this country who are, as he writes, ‘overworked, underpaid, and vastly underappreciated guardians of liberty on behalf of those who need it most.’" -- Flint Taylor, The People’s Law Office, author of 'The Torture Machine: Racism and Police Violence in Chicago'“In Everyone against Us, Goodman offers a behind-the-scenes look at what it’s like to be a public defender in one of the nation’s largest criminal court systems. The result is a gripping and often heartbreaking memoir about one lawyer’s journey to find meaning and justice despite the odds against him.” -- Kevin Davis, author of 'Defending the Damned: Inside a Dark Corner of the Criminal Justice System'“Goodman’s fast-paced introduction to the harsh, unbalanced world of criminal justice leads readers from the dungeons of a big-city lockup through soul-jarring crime-scene investigations into the colorless chambers where the fates of the accused get decided. While weighing defenders’ and prosecutors’ roles, ideals, and actual practices, Everyone against Us reads like an on-the-job legal drama.” -- Mara Leveritt, author of 'Devil’s Knot: The True Story of the West Memphis Three'Table of ContentsPreface I. Book SynopsisTrade Review“Drawing on over fifty interviews with lawyers in the trenches, Big Money Unleashed details the decades-long battle to leverage the First Amendment in order to corrode the guardrails that protect our democracy from the influence of personal and corporate mega-money. Carefully researched and compellingly argued, Big Money Unleashed is a must-read for lawyers, academics, and everyday citizens concerned for our democracy.” -- Amanda Hollis-Brusky | coauthor of "Separate but Faithful: The Christian Right's Radical Struggle to Transform Law & Legal Culture""Ann Southworth’s Big Money Unleashed is a tour de force, a must-read account of how lawyers and their clients weaponized the First Amendment to allow big money to flow into American politics despite repeated congressional efforts to stanch its flow. Southworth takes us behind the scenes to see the strategies used by lawyers, and their calculated interactions with judges and clients, to make profound and deleterious legal and social change." -- Richard L.
