Book SynopsisA study of the concept of artistic process in the Western tradition of the visual arts. Focuses on modern and contemporary art and analyzes the development of process as a discourse that increasingly locates the primary value of art in the artist’s creative labor. Trade Review“This book is essential for libraries supporting graduate programs in art history or curatorial studies and is recommended for schools of art and design.”—Ian McDermott ARLIS/NA Reviews“This is an elegant, clear text that will serve as an excellent primer for anyone interested in the histories of thinking about making and the artistic process. Art students as well as students of aesthetics and history of art will benefit from its careful, thoughtful synthesis of an array of complex, foundational texts pertaining to the theme of ‘process’ and making.”—Jo Applin, author of Yayoi Kusama: Infinity Mirror Room—Phalli’s Field“All About Process brings a wealth of art-historical knowledge and perceptive theoretical insight to analyze the crucial but elusive concept of artistic process and makes a powerful argument for its importance, not simply as an indispensable tool for creating more interesting art objects but as part of the essence of art itself. Kim Grant’s book provides a welcome resource for resisting the forces of commodification while closing the gap between art and life.”—Richard Shusterman, author of Thinking Through the Body: Essays in SomaestheticsTable of ContentsContentsIntroduction: Process as ValueChapter One: Conceptualizing the Artist’s Labor Prior to the 19th CenturyChapter Two: Art, Craft, and Industrialization Nineteenth Century Philosophical and Theoretical Views of the Artist’s Process The Arts and Crafts Movement and Artistic Process Photography and Artistic ProcessChapter Three: The Artist’s Process from the Academic to the ModernChapter Four: New Conceptions of the Artist’s Process The Artist’s Labor in Time -- Series and Stages Modern Art and Industrial Processes – Purism Physicality and Matter – The Modern Artistic Process and the Artist’s MediumChapter Five: The Artist’s Process as a Means of Self-RealizationChapter Six: The Artist’s Process at Mid-Century Artistic Process and Amateur Artists Changes in Artists’ EducationChapter Seven: Art and Social ProcessesChapter Eight: Process Art Systems Aesthetics, Series, and Conceptualism The Artist’s Work and the Artist’s Role Process Art and Craft Artists’ Education and Process after 1960Chapter Nine: It’s All about the ProcessNotesBibliographyIndex

  • Titians Icons

Pennsylvania State University Press Titians Icons

    2 in stock

Book SynopsisA reexamination of the career of Titian, the only Renaissance artist credited by contemporaries with painting a miracle-working image. Argues that a major part of the artist's legacy is to be found in his charismatic entrance into the tradition of Christian icon painting.Trade Review“An erudite study of Titian’s small-format paintings of biblical subjects. Through a careful analysis of this group of paintings, and with particular attention to the early modern conflicts between the traditions of devotional images and theorizations of art, Nygren’s book revises our understanding of Titian’s position in the history of early modern sacred art.”—Jodi Cranston, author of Green Worlds of Renaissance Venice“This searching and lucid study tactfully sets Titian’s art into contexts of Christian devotional traditions and reform thought, not to dress the artist in pious robes but to reveal Titian’s blazing pictorial intelligence at work at the very foundations of religious art.”—Alexander Nagel, author of Medieval Modern: Art Out of Time“In this groundbreaking investigation of Titian’s understudied small-scale religious paintings, Christopher Nygren convincingly demonstrates in his rich and erudite analysis that these were high-stakes painterly performances that prompted—even scripted—certain devotional responses from their sophisticated beholders. Provocatively referring to these polyvalent paintings as ‘icons,’ Nygren aligns Titian’s art with early modern understandings about miraculous agency, votive petition, vibrant matter, and spiritual comportment.”—Megan Holmes, author of The Miraculous Image in Renaissance Florence“This book deserves careful attention. It is as much a history of religion in Titian's time as it is a history of his paintings—specifically those that Nygren . . . calls icons, i.e., small, devotional, nontheatrical paintings with a tight focus on one or very few figures.”—J. T. Paoletti Choice“With its penetrating visual analysis and carefully conceived theoretical structure, this book makes a significant and innovative contribution not only to the field of Titian studies, but more broadly to the study of premodern visual culture.”—Giorgio Tagliaferro Burlington MagazineTable of ContentsList of IllustrationsPrefaceAcknowledgmentsList of AbbreviationsIntroduction: Titian, Charismatic Painter1. Book SynopsisA multidisciplinary collection of essays exploring the interconnections and disjunctures in Asian cultural histories of scent. Examines how scent functions as a category of social and moral boundary-marking and boundary-breaching within, between, and beyond Asian societies.Trade Review“Aromas of Asia is very much at the cutting edge of the field. Many books on smell engage in a battle with the straw man of ‘smell-as-neglected’ and ‘the West as ocular-centric.’ This book has moved way beyond such simplicities, and through its varied methodologies and diverse topics we emerge with a number of fresh perspectives on smell in Asia.”—James McHugh, author of Sandalwood and Carrion: Smell in Indian Religion and CultureTable of ContentsList of IllustrationsAcknowledgementsIntroduction: Scents, Sensory Colonialism, and Social Worlds in AsiaGwyn McClelland and Hannah GouldPart I: Poetics and Philosophies1. University of California Press Racial Uncertainties Mexican Americans School

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisMexican American racial uncertainty has long been a defining feature of US racial understanding. Were Mexican Americans white or nonwhite? In the postcivil rights period, this racial uncertainty took on new meaning as the courts, the federal bureaucracy, local school officials, parents, and community activists sought to turn Mexican American racial identity to their own benefit. This is the first book that examines the pivotal 1973 Keyes v. Denver School District No. 1 Supreme Court ruling, and how debates over Mexican Americans' racial position helped reinforce the emerging tropes of colorblind racial ideology. In the postcivil rights era, when overt racism was no longer socially acceptable, anti-integration voices utilized the indeterminacy of Mexican American racial identity to frame their opposition to school desegregation. That some Mexican Americans adopted these tropes only reinforced the strength of colorblindness in battles against civil rights in the 1970s.Trade Review"This is an important book, and educational, civil rights, and Texas historians will find much within to appreciate and discuss." * Southwestern Historical Quarterly *"Racial Uncertainties explains how racial and ethnic identities are both time and space specific but also how the law works to cement our understanding of identity and eliminate the possibility for fluidity." * The Society for US Intellectual History *Table of ContentsContents Acknowledgments Introduction 1 • (Un)making Mexican American Racial Identity, 1848–1964 2 • Racial Migrations: The Mile High City in Transition, 1945–1969 3 • Public Schools in Denver’s Racialized Urban Geography 4 • Becoming Minority under the Law 5 • “Not White, Yet Not, in the Old-Style Parlance, ‘Colored’ ” 6 • “American,” Not “Minority”: Mexican Americans and Colorblindness Conclusion Notes Bibliography Index

Book SynopsisTrade Review"[A] sweeping history. . . . Kreike offers a stark corrective and an implicit warning: Humanity is not distinct from nature, and assuming it is can have tragic outcomes. Climate change is one; pandemics are another. In this book, catastrophic warfare is a third. Waiting for the fourth horseman would seem unwise."---Tatiana Schlossberg, New York Times Book Review"Waging war against the Earth is an old business, and this book provides ample—and dispiriting—evidence for it." * Kirkus Reviews *"Might this be the most important topic that most smart, very well educated people have never read a book on? [This] treatment is excellent and engaging."---Tyler Cowen, Marginal Revolution"Overall then, Scorched Earth is a thoroughly researched academic book that sits at the intersection of military history and environmental history and especially delivers for readers of the former. A fascinating topic that is by no means light reading."---Leon Vlieger, Inquisitive Biologist"[A] powerful statement of what people often fail to see amid the horrors of war." * Choice Reviews *

Book SynopsisTrade Review"One of 20 essential books about the Middle East, compiled by the Middle Eastern Studies community at Anhui University in central China""[A] lucid exposition of the Islamic Republic’s two main ideological and policy axes: the jihadists, embodied by the country’s founder, Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, and the ijtihadists, the more flexible and rational pragmatists, two of whom, Mohammad Khatami and Hassan Rouhani, have been elected president."---John Waterbury, Foreign Affairs"A welcome and discerning primer. . . . It should be studied carefully by all students of Middle Eastern politics and especially by diplomats, military leaders, and political decision-makers who wish to rectify or avoid repeating the current flawed policies toward the Islamic Republic of Iran."---Robert L. Tignor, Michigan War Studies Review"Scholarly portrait of a nation that resists easy categorization—and containment. . . . Useful reading for students of contemporary geopolitics, in which Iran has proven a constant, often destabilizing presence." * Kirkus *"Saikal . . . offers a critical but not unsympathetic perspective on the ‘unique and multi-dimensional, and at times tragic, theopolitical story’ of Iran. . . . Saikal’s convincing bottom line is that open confrontation with Iran is unwise and unlikely to be productive, whereas a policy of careful engagement, while risky, could enable progress on the margins. The author’s careful, analytic approach privileges trade statistics and governmental communiqués over stories of human interest; as such, this is for readers who seek an understanding of strategic considerations, rather than a sense of what daily life is like for the Iranian population." * Publishers Weekly *"Iran Rising: The Survival and Future of the Islamic Republic is a clearly written, well-researched, and scholarly work that will be of benefit to anyone with a genuine interest in this strong and influential nation."---Robert Fantina, New York Journal of Books"Iran Rising is well written, laid out in a logical format, and well sourced with citations. It is an excellent primer on the country of Iran and offers a look behind the curtain on how the Iranian government is organized and administered. The book also illustrates the multifaceted nature of the elements of national power and that nothing is ever as simple as it seems. I highly recommend this book for all military and nonmilitary audiences because of its insight into one of the lesser understood countries that has been a thorn in the side of the United States for over forty years."---George Hodge, Military Review

    7 in stock

Book SynopsisTrade ReviewOne of Bloomberg's Best Books of 2016 "These findings run counter to a popular narrative. Recall that in 2012, Mitt Romney said that in a democracy, a candidate who offers tax breaks to the less well-off at the expense of the rich will win mass support 'no matter what.' That claim does not appear to be supported by the historical record."--Robert J. Shiller, New York Times "In its big picture argument the book is convincing: on both the correlation and nature of causality between wars that required the mass of working people to sacrifice not just their labour but also their lives; and on the imposition of higher tax rates on the rich in the 20th century."--Torsten Bell, Prospect "A sweeping look at the history of levies on the wealthy."--Hugo Greenhalgh, Financial Times "[Scheve and Stasavage] flesh out their big picture with a mass of compelling evidence. Overall, an outstanding book."--Bryan Caplan, EconLog "What is surprising about this book is how robustly the authors discount other widely held explanations for the gradual reduction in tax paid by the richest 1% since 1980. The influence of political lobbying, liberalised capital flows and the breakdown of the postwar consensus are, in their view, inadequate answers. What has changed is the focus of 'equality of sacrifice,' which has returned to a debate about fairness."--Zac Tate, Capx "Apart from anything else, the historical data on top tax rates is fascinating."--Diane Coyle, Enlightened Economist "[A] fine and stimulating book."--Financial Post "More than any other book I've read in the past few years, their arguments have prompted me to review what they wrote and look for other research that supports or counters their points."--David Cay Johnston, Tax Notes "The authors make the force of the compensatory view clear. Judging by the apparent success of the rhetoric during the 2016 U.S. presidential primaries that speaks of a system rigged to favor the rich, the compensatory theory has not gone unnoticed by political strategists."--Michael Keen, Finance & Development Magazine "[A] fine model of social science research."--Richard Cooper, Foreign Affairs "Taxing the Richexplains why the problems of America's poor and angry are unlikely to be solved by redistributive taxation."--Angus Deaton, BloombergTable of ContentsFigures and Tables xi Acknowledgments xiii PART ONE -DEBATING TAXATION 1. In this sense it reads as much like a book written by Carroll as one about him."---Robert Douglas-Fairhurst, V&A Magazine"Diane Waggoner’s comprehensive study, lavishly illustrated with excellent reproductions of Carroll’s albumen prints, alongside letters and sketches, explores how his paintings and photographs helped shape emerging conceptions of childhood in the Victorian age. . . . The book will appeal not just to Carroll aficionados but to anyone with an interest in the development of photography in the 19th century."---Jonathan Harwood, Black & White Photography Magazine"Diane Waggoner’s comprehensive study, lavishly illustrated with excellent reproductions of Carroll’s albumen prints, alongside letters and sketches, explores how his paintings and photographs helped shape emerging conceptions of childhood in the Victorian age."---Jonathan Harwood, Black & White Photography Magazine"Waggoner illuminates the complexity of her subject, bringing to it both fresh context and academic rigor. . . . This is a book to read carefully, as well as to look at, and it will be a vital addition to Carroll scholarship. . . . • Firepower How the NRA Turned Gun Owners into a

Princeton University Press Firepower How the NRA Turned Gun Owners into a

Book SynopsisTrade Review"Firepower is the best scholarly analysis of the National Rifle Association (NRA) yet published …. [Lacombe] effectively argues that the NRA has long been political, but that the form of its politics changed from its "quasi-governmental phase" (pre-1970s) to its "partisan phase" (1970s onward) …. Anyone interested in the NRA and gun politics today should read this book." * Choice *"Lacombe’s book is a worthy read because it provides a new lens through which to view the NRA and the development of the gun rights movement more broadly. Its reorientation of the discussion from material and partisan to psychological processes makes Firepower an important addition to any syllabus on gun politics and interest group politics."---Alexandra Filindra, Perspectives on Politics

Book SynopsisTrade Review"A Financial Times FT Critics' Book of the Year""A Choice Outstanding Academic Title of the Year""This book found me at just the right time. . . . [The Good-Enough Life] offers a bit of an antidote or a countercultural approach to designing communities and systems. . . [It’s a] philosophical, semi-political, pro-social, contemplative approach to designing a new way forward."---Alyson Stoner, New York Magazine"[Alpert’s] vision of a good-enough world is energizing."---Lily Meyer, The Atlantic"The Good-Enough Life leaves no meritocracy standing. . . . [A] jolt of reorientation."---Emily Ogden, Los Angeles Review of Books"[W]e should bestow social recognition . . . .on common moral qualities, not on uncommon talent. It should be good enough just to be good enough . . . . [This is] Alpert’s case, and he makes it well."---Andrew Stark, Times Literary Supplement"Read this book, breathe a sigh of relief, and then go take a nap."---Rana Foroohar, Financial Times"This is an amazing and deeply inspiring book.
