MO - University of Illinois Press The Early Black History Movement Carter G.
Book SynopsisPero Gaglo Dagbovie examines the lives, works, and contributions of two of the most important figures of the early black history movement, Carter G. Woodson and Lorenzo Johnston Greene. Drawing on the two men''s personal papers as well as the materials of the Association for the Study of Negro Life and History (ASNLH), Dagbovie probes the struggles, sacrifices, and achievements of the black history pioneers and offers the first major examination of Greene''s life. Equally important, it also addresses a variety of overlooked issues pertaining to Woodson, including the historian''s image in popular and scholarly writings and memory, the democratic approach of the ASNLH, and the pivotal role women played in the association.Trade Review"Dagbovie . . . draws on the personal papers of these two seminal historians, along with materials from the Association for the Study of Negro Life and History (ASNLH), to chronicle the growth of the modern black history movement. . . . Recommended for all black history and historiography collections."--Multicultural Review "As scholar-activists, Carter G. Woodson and Lorenzo J. Greene used their professional historical training not only to establish and further the subdiscipline of African American history, but also to help African Americans understand the importance and significance of their role in U.S. development. . . . Dagbovie has done well to highlight their careers and contributions. . . . Recommended."--Choice "Dagbovie contributes benchmark research to US historiography. . . . [He] provides an unprecedented analytical account of two central black history innovators."--Journal of American History “In addition to a careful assessment of the personalities and motivations of Woodson and Greene, Dagbovie’s work provides a solid foundation and model for future work on black historians.”--The Journal of Southern History"Dagbovie's dual biography of two giants of the black history movement is an important work. . . . The Early Black History Movement gives deeper insight on iconic figures of the early black history movement while simultaneously serving as a rebuke to disinterested black scholars in the present."--Afro-Americans in New York Life and History"A welcome reminder of a period when scholars strove to advance knowledge and social justice. . . . Pero Dagbovie has recovered a vital chapter in that intellectual struggle, offering insight into the African American past and a reminder of roads not taken today."--A.M.E. Church Review"A vital study of black American intellectual life and black professional historians."--American Studies"Well-written and original, this dual biography of Carter G. Woodson and one of his leading disciples in the Black History Movement, Lorenzo Greene, allows historian Pero Dagbovie to explore new paths and places touched by Woodson's expansive vision of the importance of history to the overall social, economic, political, and psychological well-being and advancement of people of African descent. This is a major contribution to an overlooked and under-theorized area of African American intellectual history."--V. P. Franklin, editor of The Journal of African American History "This book brilliantly illuminates the early black history movement through the lives and scholarship of two of its pioneers. Dagbovie expertly helps us to understand and to appreciate the nature of that 'movement' for truth and social justice."--Robert L. Harris Jr., coeditor of The Columbia Guide to African American History since 1939

Indiana University Press Muhammad and the Golden Bough Reconstructing
Book SynopsisDemonstrates the existence of a coherent pre-Islamic Arabian myth that was subsequently incorporated into Islamic poetic tradition. This book dissects the Arab-Islamic myth built around Muhammad's unearthing of a "golden bough" from the grave of the last survivor of an ancient Arab people.Trade ReviewUntil now Arabian myth has been ignored at the same time that other ancient Near Eastern myths have been studied at length. Stetkevych (Univ. of Chicago) succeeds brilliantly in reconstructing the myth of the destruction of the Thamud, an ancient people of north Arabia. His key to this myth is a canonical story of the discovery by the prophet Muhammad of a golden bough at the very site where the Thamud are thought to have been destroyed by a scourge from God. Through careful philological, historical, and literary analysis he sets the story of this golden bough in an ever-widening context of myth and legend, reaching back to Gilgamesh, the Bible, the Odyssey, and the Aeneid. James Frazer's The Golden Bough (1890, 1915) is examined and reevaluated in the light of the other golden bough myths. Stetkevych's argument for the existence of an autochthonous Arabian myth is entirely convincing, and this book will add a new dimension to the study of Near Eastern and Mediterranean myth and legend. Highly recommended for collections in folklore and mythology, ancient Near Eastern studies, and Islam.W. L. Pennsylvania State University Press The Site of the Social
Book SynopsisInspired by Heidegger's concept of the clearing of being, and by Wittgenstein's ideas on human practice, Theodore Schatzki offers a novel approach to understanding the constitution and transformation of social life.Trade Review“Professor Schatzki’s The Site of the Social picks up where his groundbreaking Social Practices leaves off. Where the latter provided a compelling picture of how we are constituted by our social practices, his new book offers an ontology of the social itself. By including extended discussions of diverse social groupings such as Shaker herb practice and day trading on Nasdaq, Schatzki sketches a clear and compelling picture of what the nature of the social consists in. Essentially, The Site of the Social constructs an ontology that captures many of the features of the work of Foucault and Deleuze in such a way as to put them in dialogue with contemporary sociologists, biologists, and political theorists in the English-speaking world.”—Todd May,Clemson University“This is a book that any fan of Foucault, Deleuze, or Bourdieu, or for that matter Giddens, and anyone interested in the problem of the relevance of Heidegger to social theory, will find challenging—and essential. Schatzki makes an impressive case for a social ontology centered on practices, and in the course of it rethinks and convincingly critiques the thought of many of the contributors to ‘practice theory’ while showing its centrality to twentieth-century thought. But this book is not merely a book about books: Schatzki deals with real human material in a novel way.”—Stephen Turner,University of South Florida“This book is top-notch philosophical scholarship.”—R. F. Badamo ties together the fragmented political map of the later medieval eastern Mediterranean in unexpected ways that cause us to rethink broader questions of global art and history.”—Benjamin Anderson,Cornell University“Saint George Between Empires particularly excels in highlighting the importance of Saint George / al-Khiḍr in both Christian and Islamic contexts, and is by far the most all-encompassing study on this subject.”—Dr. Mat Immerzeel,Fellow International Studies, Leiden University

Princeton University Press The Drama of Celebrity
Book SynopsisTrade Review"[An] inventive, stimulating book. . . . [Sharon] Marcus is a brilliant theorist and analyst of theater history."---Elaine Showalter, New York Times"[An] insightful and often entertaining take on celebrity. . . . The linchpin of the author's study is French stage actress Sarah Bernhardt, a master of self-promotion. To the shelves of works about Bernhardt, Marcus brings a singular take—richly illustrated throughout by reproduced drawings, paintings, and photographs—that fascinates as it explains her concepts of celebrity." * Kirkus *"Marcus’s study of Bernhardt, a Jewish actress, is remarkable. Even though this is an academic text, it reads so well. And wow, could we read a bajillion more books on Sarah Bernhardt!!!"---Emily Burack, Alma"Marcus’s great achievement here is that she leads us on a journey of understanding celebrity and stardom with a richer history than we are often want to take."---D. Gilson, Lambda Literary"The Drama of Celebrity by Sharon Marcus is a hybrid of biography and sociological treatise on one of the most important phenomena of modern times . . . why we are attracted to — or, conversely, repulsed by — celebrity culture."---Kitty Kelley, Washington Independent Review of Books"[An] insightful and engaging examination of celebrity culture . . . Marcus augments her analysis by drawing on types of sources that are rarely used, such as scrapbooks, letters and life writing produced by fans of celebrities. The inclusion of normally neglected voices adds richness and depth to this work, ensuring it is more comprehensive than most earlier studies of this intriguing subject."---Eleanor Fitzsimons, Literary Review"You don’t have to be into celebrity culture to appreciate this readable study."---Steven Carroll, Sydney Morning Herald"I love the book."---Radhika Jones"In lucid prose, [Marcus] describes celebrity as a drama with three main characters: celebrities, the public that adores and judges them, and the media producers who exalt, criticize and satirize . . . The star of the book is Sarah Bernhardt . . . The book reproduces a rich trove of archival material which, if it does not bring Bernhardt back to life, at least reveals the scintillating liveliness of her image a century ago . . . Spend 200 pages with Sarah Bernhardt, and Kim Kardashian’s provocations come to seem less shocking."---Irina Dumitrescu, Times Literary Supplement"[An] excellent new book . . . Marcus [has] performed a great service by illuminating the extraordinary gift possessed by [Sarah Bernhardt]."---Joseph Roach, Los Angeles Review of Books"The Drama of Celebrity is premised on a fundamental continuity between Bernhardt’s era and our own, and Marcus is surely right to contend that the star did much to invent what we now recognize as celebrity culture."---Ruth Bernard Yeazell, New York Review of Books"[S]parky, feisty and compelling . . . . Sharon Marcus’s book is tour de force and the author a total star."---Jonathan Margolis, Jewish Chronicle"Olivia Vinall delivers an engaging narration of Marcus's exhaustive research on the origins of modern celebrity culture . . . [her] pace and tone are just right for this fascinating investigation of celebrity in our media-driven world." * Audiofile Magazine *"The book will hold readers’ interest and change their understanding of the triangular interaction involving celebrities, media producers and the public."---Richard Weigel, Bowling Green Daily News"[In The Drama of Celebrity], Marcus challenges everything that has been thought about the obsession with fame. Icons are not merely famous for being famous; the media alone cannot make or break stars; fans are not simply passive dupes. Instead, journalists, the public, and celebrities themselves all compete, passionately and expertly, to shape the stories told about celebrities and fans. The result: A high-stakes drama as endless as it is unpredictable." * Society’s Books of Note *"One of the most widely researched and acutely conceptualized books that I have had the pleasure to read in recent years."---Nicholas White, Modern Language Review"[In The Drama of Celebrity,] Marcus traces a long history of modern celebrity culture, which she triangulates in negotiations among stars, fans, and the media. The book is elegantly organized, with each chapter turning around a key 'configuration' of celebrity culture—defiance, sensation, intimacy, multiplication, judgment, and merit—and a key celebrity, the actress Sarah Bernhardt."---Lauren Eriks Cline, Victorian Literature and Culture"Marcus’ core thesis—that celebrity is a process rather than an individual—is a compelling one in that it challenges the reader to view fame as a social relationship, one in which we all play a role, regardless of whether or not we choose to engage with particular stars."---Andrea McDonnell, Journal of British Studies"Marcus’s book is necessary reading for anyone wishing to understand the workings of celebrity."---Kelly Boyd, Journal of Victorian Culture"A serious, sophisticated, and potentially game changing study of celebrity."---Mary Lynn Stewart, American Historical Review

Cornell University Press On Greek Religion
Book SynopsisA provocative and wide-ranging entrée into the world of ancient Greek religion.Trade ReviewAlthough one might expect a mere survey from the title, Parker delivers far more than a beginners' summary. Rather, this book is a probing exploration of the methodological and interpretive difficulties associated with Greek religion from the eighth through the second centuries BCE.... This work provides a wealth of insights from one of the leading experts in the field. Summing Up: Highly recommended. * Choice *On Greek Religion has all the virtues we have come to appreciate in his writings: a fruitful blend of the factual and theoretical; a simultaneous inclination towards and distrust of categories, schemes, and generalities; scrupulous attention to detail; an awareness of what we do and do not and cannot know about Greek religion; precise and generous but not uncritical discussions of others' views; the integration of literary and epigraphical sources; common sense; and a lively style with touches of whimsy. -- Jon D. Mikalson * The Classical Journal *This book derives from the Townsend Lectures given by Parker at Cornell in 2008, but its style is not noticeably different from that of Parker's two previous books.... Its scope is wider than those two works, both chronologically, dealing with material from the eighth to the second century BC, and geographically, covering the entire Greek world. Its ambition is also greater, in that its seven chapters and five appendices aim to provide an interpretation of Greek religion as a whole.... This is a very important book that everyone working in the field of Greek religion will have to read. -- Hugh Bowden * The Journal of Hellenic Studies *This book is an important step in its author's scholarly journey in the field of ancient Greek religion.... This work is outstandingly well-informed, well-written, clever and also very cautious. -- Vinciane Pirenne-Delforge * Bryn Mawr Classical Review *This work, derived from a series of lectures given by the author at Cornell University in 2008, offers a discussion on a series of central questions in the domain of Greek religion. R. Parker achieves his goal with much maestria in this work, which is proof of an excellent knowledge of Greek religion, both ancient evidence and equal historiography, to which he returns frequently. To enrich his reflections, the author systematically echoes various interpretations of the issues he tackles, thus giving breadth to his analysis. All of these qualities make On Greek Religion an indispensable text for specialists in Ancient Greek religion, who will find in it abundant material for reflection. -- Stéphanie Paul * L'Antiquité Classique *Table of Contents1. Book SynopsisIn this book Umberto Eco argues that translation is not about comparing two languages, but about the interpretation of a text in two different languages, thus involving a shift between cultures.Trade Review"'Umberto Eco's Experiences in Translation is witty and engrossing, and it will inform and entertain readers who have ever wondered about the work that goes into transforming a text from a language they cannot read into one they can.' Book Synopsis-Revised and expanded 2nd Ed of the award-winning, Comprehensive English-Yiddish Dictionary. -Includes more than 85,000 words, and approximately 1000 new terms. First edition sold over 3500 copies.Trade Review"After the Declaration of Independence came Noah Webster's dictionaries, that proclaimed the independence of American English usage and spelling. After the mass Jewish immigration to America came the great lexicographers, who made America the most capacious home that the Yiddish language has ever known: Alexander Harkavy (1863-1939), Nahum Stutchkoff (1893-1965), Uriel Weinreich (1926-1967), Yudel Mark (1897-1995), and Mordkhe Schaechter (1927-2007). Other American languages should be so lucky. But none were so bold as the team of Gitl Schaechter-Viswanath and Paul Glasser, may they live and prosper, who turned Yiddish into any match for American English. Where English has only "furious," Yiddish has tsekokht, oyfgekokht, ongetsundn, oyser zikh, tsorndik, vild, mole-kaas, mole-retsikhe and mole-kheyme, to capture every possible nuance of displeasure. Where English has "flash drive," Yiddish has shlisldisk, which is so much more musical. You can cuddle up with a tselke far more easily than with a "cell phone." The Comprehensive English-Yiddish Dictionary is American Jewry's Declaration of Equal Rights."—David G. Roskies - Sol & Evelyn Henkind Professor of Yiddish Literature and Culture, Jewish Theological Seminary"In my view, this magnificent dictionary is the most important contribution to the field of Yiddish Studies in the 21st century. It is indispensable for any student or scholar of Yiddish and will remain so for future generations. I always have it on my desk"—Mikhail Krutikov - Professor of Slavic and Judaic Studies, University of Michigan

University of Texas Press How Writing Came About
Book SynopsisA groundbreaking theory on the origins of writing, now presented for a general audience.Trade ReviewDiscoveries in the history of writing are rare, but Denise Schmandt-Besserat made one in realizing that phonetic writing in the West descends not from pictography, a view repeated everywhere, but from abstract, nonphonetic, mostly noniconographic accounting tokens used in Neolithic farming communities of the Near East beginning from about 8000 B.C. Cornell University Press White World Order Black Power Politics
Book SynopsisRacism and imperialism are the twin forces that propelled the course of the United States in the world in the early twentieth century and in turn affected the way that diplomatic history and international relations were taught and understood in the American academy. Evolutionary theory, social Darwinism, and racial anthropology had been dominant doctrines in international relations from its beginnings; racist attitudes informed research priorities and were embedded in newly formed professional organizations. In White World Order, Black Power Politics, Robert Vitalis recovers the arguments, texts, and institution building of an extraordinary group of professors at Howard University, including Alain Locke, Ralph Bunche, Rayford Logan, Eric Williams, and Merze Tate, who was the first black female professor of political science in the country.Within the rigidly segregated profession, the Howard School of International Relations represented the most important center of opposition Trade ReviewDefying his discipline's preference for theory over history, Vitalis has demonstrated how detailed, archive-based historical accounts can lift the veil on the racism running through international relations as field and practice. -- Carol Polsgrove * American Historical Review *The book stands out for how it critiques how institutions reproduce, often in an unconscious manner, the foundational assumptions of an academic discipline.... Vitalis has also contributed to the vibrant and expanding scholarly study of radical Black transnational intellectual history by engaging with a largely-overlooked dimension of the work of important figures in the history of Black radical thought such as Locke, Williams and Bunche, showing how those thinkers worked within and against formal academic structures to criticize the racist and imperialist dynamics of international relations scholarship. * National Polticial Science Review *Robert Vitalis wants his discipline to understand not only how central the category of race and the structures of racism were to its founding institutions and paradigms but also to see the erasure of that history not as progress but as repression, a willful forgetting that has if anything made it less equipped to comprehend (much less to address) the shocking racial inequities that still mark both the American and the global order. If international relations scholars want to understand the racial politics that made their field what it is today, there is no better place to begin than with this righteously angry book. -- Susan Pederson * London Review of Books *There is much to commend in Vitalis' book which is filled with fascinating vignettes and unexpected connections. He writes with clarity and passion, especially in the book's opening and close, to ensure that whilst ample room is given for the reader to make their own way through the material, it is never an aimless wander. -- Jake Hodder * Journal of Historical Geography *Table of ContentsIntroduction: A Mongrel American Social SciencePart I. University of Wisconsin Press The Road to Home Rule Antiimperialism and the
Book SynopsisIn the 1870s and 1880s, in Irish eyes, misrule by British officials and absentee landlords mirrored imperial oppression across the globe. Paul Townend shows that a growing critique of British imperialism shaped a rapidly evolving Irish political consciousness and was a crucial factor giving momentum to the Home Rule and Land League campaigns.Trade Review“A bold and original interpretation in which empire emerges as the essential context—rather than a mere sideshow or backdrop—for the rise of Irish nationalism. To find the origins of Home Rule, we will now need to look not simply at the internal politics of the United Kingdom but at Irish responses to events in India, Egypt, Sudan, and South Africa.”—Kevin Kenny, Boston College“Thoroughly engaging. . . . The work is a major step forward in its discernment that a radical, principled anti-imperialism lay at the heart of the constitutional nationalist tradition in the latter years of the nineteenth century.”—Breac
