Tupelo Press, Incorporated Mycocosmic
Book SynopsisMycocosmic offers intricately woven incantationsprayers, hexes, and charmsall of which call for a transformation of language, grief, and the self. Good things come to you through fire, a Tarot reader told Lesley Wheeler as she was composing what became her sixth poetry collection, Mycocosmic. But how could that be true, while the planet was burning and life slamming her with one loss after another? Then she learned about pyrophilic fungi that lurk in soil until activated by fire. Enter mycelia and a teeming underground world that metabolizes death, changing what remains so that life can begin anew. Mycocosmic offers intricately woven spell poemsprayers, hexes, charms, and invocationsthat call for transformation. A parent's death gives Wheeler the freedom to reveal difficult truths about family violence and her sexuality; a midlife mental health crisis transforms her sense of self. Incantatory language channeled through a wide variety of formsincluding free verse, litany, sonnets, the bref double, the golden shovel, and the villanelleempowers these shifts. Beneath these poems runs a book-length essay in verse, Underpoem [Fire Fungus], sending tendrils across the footer of each page. This poetic mycelium nourishes metamorphosis and highlights its urgency. As Merlyn Sheldrake writes in Entangled Life, Mycelium describes the most common of fungal habits, better thought of not as a thing but as a process: an exploratory, irregular tendency. Poetry is rooted in real and imagined communities and conversations. Mycocosmic demonstrates how interdependence binds us together.

Birkhauser Le Corbusiers Ahmedabad Millowners Association
Book SynopsisThe Millowners' Association Building in Ahmedabad, designed by Le Corbusier and completed in 1954, has rarely been published, but is nevertheless considered an important milestone in the architect's work. In particular, the building influenced his later work, such as the Carpenter Center for the Visual Arts at Harvard. This book documents the building and relates it to Le Corbusier's theoretical work, especially Vers une architecture. The significance of key figures such as Paul Valéry and John Ruskin for Le Corbusier's work is explained. Characteristic design elements such as the promenade architecturale and the use of brise-soleils are explored. In addition to numerous scaled drawings, newly produced models clarify the most important design aspects of the building.

MK - Stanford University Press Sacred Emotions
Book SynopsisScholars have long argued that early Hasidic teachings introduced a psychological dimension to kabbalistic traditions and revitalized modern Judaism. Focused on the inner soul, Hasidism encouraged worshippers to experience joy and delight through their enthusiastic practices. In this new work grounded in the historical study of emotions, Leore Sachs-Shmueli shows that Hasidic teachers and preachers also nurtured and even promoted the negative emotions of yirah, an emotional cluster that encompasses fear, apprehension, anxiety, and awe. Exploring their roots in classical texts of Kabbalah, including the Zohar and works of Safed Kabbalah, Sachs-Shmueli demonstrates how early Hasidic masters like the Baal Shem Tov, the circle of the Maggid of Mezhrich, Shneur Zalman of Liadi, and R. Nachman of Bratslav deliberately cultivated a tense emotional culture through the mental guidelines in their texts. Through an emphasis on God-fearing and the fear of sin, they motivated followers of the new movement to attain the mystical ideal while simultaneously fostering a social community devoted to divine worship according to Jewish law, in the face of persecution and secularization. For readers interested in Jewish mysticism and Hasidism, Sacred Emotions argues that negative emotions serve as crucial catalysts for intensifying religious devotion and shaped the rise and cohesion of the Hasidic movement.

MK - Stanford University Press Forgotten Experts Astrologers Science and
Book SynopsisForgotten Experts offers a history of Ottoman court astrologers and traces their shifting authority and prestige over the long sixteenth century. These individuals served the Ottoman court with their expertise in mathematical, astronomical, and astrological sciences, distinguishing themselves from other occult practitioners and esoteric specialists. While both prophecy and prognostication are attempts to map the terrain of the future, the astrologers' work did not claim spiritual weight as a prophecy but relied instead on methods of prediction developed from data and patterns elaborated through technical and scientific writings. Drawing on extensive manuscript and archival records written in Ottoman Turkish, Persian, and Arabic, A. Tunç Sen writes a history of science, state formation, and bureaucracy within the overarching tale of Ottoman imperial formation and protocols. He invites readers to follow Ottoman court astrologers' fluctuating careers as practitioners of a contentious science and shows how this class of learned individuals constructed its scientific authority despite numerous cultural, societal, and epistemic challenges. In understanding the expertise of court astrologers, we gain insight into the intricate social relations established and maintained between the men of knowledge and the men of rule, between expertise and statecraft, in the early modern Ottoman imperial context.

MK - Stanford University Press Race and the Question of Palestine
Book SynopsisThis book develops from the position that the colonization of Palestinelike other imperial and settler colonial projectscannot be understood outside the grammar of race. Race and the Question of Palestine explores how race operates as a technology of power and colonial rule, a political and economic structure, a set of legal and discursive practices, and a classificatory system.Offering a wide-ranging set of essays by historians, legal scholars, political scientists, sociologists, literary scholars, and race critical theorists, this collection illuminates how race should be understood in terms of its political work, and not as an identity category interchangeable with ethnicity, culture, or nationalism. Essays build on a long-standing tradition of theorizing race in Palestine studies and speak to four interconnected themesthe politics of racialization and regimes of race, racism and antiracism, race and capital accumulation, and BlackPalestinian solidarity. These engagements challenge the exceptionalism of the Palestinian case, and stress the importance of locating Palestine within global histories and present politics of imperialism, settler colonialism, capitalism, and heteropatriarchy. MP - University Of Minnesota Press Dreaming Down the Track
Book SynopsisWhat can Aboriginal filmmaking reveal about Indigenous presence and futures? The product of years of embedded fieldwork within Indigenous film crews in Northwestern Australia, Dreaming Down the Track delves deeply into Aboriginal cinema as a transformative community process. It follows the social lives of projects throughout their production cycles, from planning and editing to screening, broadcasting, and after-images. Across its narrative sweep, this ethnography engages the film career of Kukatja elder Mark Moora to demonstrate the impact of filmmaking on how Aboriginal futures are collectively imagined and called forth. William Lempert highlights a series of awakenings through which Moora ultimately came to view cinema as a process for catalyzing his family's return to their home country of Mangkayi. This biographical media journey paints an intimate portrait of the inspiring possibilities and sobering limitations of Indigenous envisioning within settler states. Lempert traces how Moora's life and films convey a multiplicity of Aboriginal experiences across time and space, from colonial contact to contemporary life in communities like Balgo, including the continued governmental attempts to undermine them. Amid ongoing negotiations to establish the first treaties between Indigenous nations and Australian states, Dreaming Down the Track illustrates what is at stake in how AboriginalState relations are represented and understood, both within communities and for the broader public. Lempert stays true to Moora's insight that film can preserve community stories for generations to come, toward the aim of enacting sovereign futures.

Diaphanes AG Last Writings of Antonin Artaud
Book SynopsisThe last writings of Antonin Artaud published in English and brought together in one edition for the first time. Artaud spent the last years of his life, from his incarceration in the psychiatric hospital of Rodez to the last month in freedom until his death in March 1948, working and writing. This collection includes numerous poems, radio works, texts on his drawings, vocal improvisations, letters, and fragments, some of which have never or only partially been published in English. Artaud's late writings intensify and accumulate the author's most urgent preoccupations: the transmutation of the human anatomy into a skeletal configuration without organs; the imminent threat from malevolent assassins to steal his semen and kill him; his hatred of psychiatry and all religions and the necessity for a new and insurgent creation of art, dance, and vocal cacophony. Including additional new translations, this issue edited by Stephen Barber finishes the project by American poet and translator Clayton Eshleman and his collaborators to translate and publish these works in English in their entirety.

Cornell University Press Photography and the Making of the Nazi Racial
Book SynopsisPhotography and the Making of the Nazi Racial Community examines the role of photography in the construction of the Nazi Volksgemeinschaft, a racially exclusive community, during the Third Reich. Julie R. Keresztes explores how the dictatorship promoted photography for those who belonged to that community and excluded Jews from the practice. As Nazi officials dispossessed Jewish photographers and robbed them of their equipment, studios, and eventually their lives, they made photography more accessible to non-Jewish Germans. But they inadvertently created spaces for photography to be used as resistance and revenge in concentration camps, where forced laborers salvaged photographs that exposed the extermination of Europe's Jews. As the victims of Nazi persecution used photography to gather evidence of the Holocaust, German troops and their families used photography to portray themselves as dutiful members of the Volksgemeinschaft rather than show the reality of war and genocide.
