Abrams Make Time for Creativity
Book SynopsisTrade ReviewBrandon Stosuy has built so many platforms for others to explore their curiosities, and I would be beyond eager to see his own words and curiosities leaping off of the page. -- Hanif Abdurraqib * poet and author of Go Ahead in the Rain: Notes to A Tribe Called Quest *The Creative Independent, co-founded and edited by Brandon, is what I actually read when I want to know how other artists really work, what they feel, how they live, in more specific and intimate language than I'd ever get from any other press outlet. This has been vital in my otherwise very isolated and unique life as a working artist. I'm certain Brandon’s book will satisfy a similar need as TCI does for me, not just for artists, but for anyone who is trying to make something out of nothing, even when no one else around seems to need or want what you do. -- Mitski * award-winning musician *Nineteen years ago Brandon Stosuy was the first professional writer (and only for a while) to articulate what it was I was trying to do emotionally with my songwriting. He also turned me on to a bunch of ways to do it better. He’s been a sort of beacon of encouragement and motivation for me every since. Brandon is really the only writer I still care about impressing. Everyone should be so lucky to have someone this wise and kind and honest around them. This book will give everyone the guidance and advice I’ve been getting for a long time. -- Matt Berninger * lead vocalist for the Grammy-winning band, The National *Brandon Stosuy doesn’t just know the culture inside out. He is the culture. -- Ed Park * journalist, editor, and author of the novel Personal Days *In the filtered, branded, faux-authenticized, click-bitten, hyper-performative hellscape we call modern life, Brandon Stosuy’s DIY ethos, spirit of integrity and curatorial creativity are a beacon of uncancellable light. We need his voice everywhere. -- Melissa Broder * author of So Sad Today and The Pisces *Brandon Stosuy is a powerhouse of creativity. He has navigated a sometimes cruel world, where the spirit of the new is often maligned, and approached this negativity with both otherworldly grace and humor. Over his extensive career, he has made so many important spaces for writers, musicians, and artists, and his story is one of hope, freedom, and change. His book is sure to be worshipped for many years to come. May it nourish your own inner creative independence! -- Dorothea Lasky * mostly recently author of Milk and Animal, and co-author of Astro Poets: Your Guides to the Zodiac *

MD - Duke University Press The Book of Politics
Book SynopsisIn The Book of Politics, Michael Dutton offers an affective theorization of the political and a political theorization of affect. Drawing on Western and Chinese social theory and practice, Dutton rethinks Carl Schmitt’s insistence that the political can be thought of only within the antagonistic pairing of friend and enemy. Dutton shows how the power of the friend/enemy binary must be understood by conceptualizing the political as the channeling, harnessing, and transforming of affective energy flows in relation to that binary. Given this affective nature of politics, Dutton contends that to rethink the political means moving away from a political science toward an art of the political. Such an art highlights fluidity and pulls away from Eurocentric political theory, requiring a conceptualization of the political as global. He juxtaposes ancient Chinese cosmology, medicine, and Maoism against the monuments of early capitalist modernity such as the Crystal Palace and the Ei

Ohio University Press Safari Nation A Social History of the Kruger
Book SynopsisSafari Nation tells the history of the Kruger National Park through a black perspective, helping explain why Africa’s national parks—often derided by scholars as colonial impositions—survived the end of white rule on the continent.Trade Review“In Safari Nation, the Kruger Park and South African ideas of nature and nationality are revealed in profoundly new and insightful ways. Jacob Dlamini captures South African experiences of nature and leisure that have largely escaped the historical profession, focusing his sharp eye on the significant minority of black South Africans who managed to live ’with—as opposed to under—colonialism and apartheid.’ An enjoyable book, full of surprises.” -- Saul Dubow, author of South Africa's Struggle for Human Rights“An innovative work of intellectual, political, and social history, Safari Nation advances a compelling new explanation for why the ANC government has chosen not to dismantle colonial-era conservation projects whose origins lie in the dispossession of countless black families. Dlamini’s skillful storytelling throughout the book manages to balance compassion and concern for justice with careful empirical detail in a direct, graceful prose that makes Safari Nation an enjoyable read from start to finish.” -- Heidi Gengenbach, author of Binding Memories: Women as Makers and Tellers of History in Magude, Mozambique“Safari Nation is a highly original treatment of the history of Kruger National Park from a black perspective. Dlamini does not pursue a polarized interpretation of the park and conservation as simply white/colonial constructs but instead develops a growing literature that presents African people as engaged in many different facets of park history, as agents, and conservationists.” -- William Beinart, author of Rise of Conservation in South Africa“This book is about nature and black South Africans, but not as daughters and sons of the soil. Rather, Jacob Dlamini describes people on the move towards Kruger National Park, a place where conservation meant racial exclusion. On their way, they made a space of belonging through political effort, not nativism. Following its own eclectic route through rural reserves, cities, and mines, from Table Mountain to the lowveld, Safari Nation offers a bold argument that by making claim on the more-than-human world, black South Africans created an inclusive nation.” -- Nancy Jacobs, author of Birders of Africa: History of a Network“Safari Nation is more than a social history of KNP. It is a history of black South Africans opposed to injustice engaging with the land, leisure, what it means to be South African, and ‘ways of being’ under colonialism, apartheid, and a still unequal nation…. Indeed, Dlamini’s history of Kruger National Park makes a bold and hopeful statement about conservation and the land question in South Africa.” -- Jill E. Kelly * American Historical Review *

University of Notre Dame Press Whose Justice Which Rationality
Book SynopsisOffers a persuasive argument of there not being rationality that is not the rationality of some tradition. MacIntyre examines the problems presented by the existence of rival traditions of inquiry in the cases of four major philosophers: Aristotle, Augustine, Aquinas, and Hume.Trade Review"Alasdair MacIntyre has done it again. . . . [He] delivers on his promise in After Virtue to develop an account of rationality and justice that is tradition specific. It is a long and complex book, but will repay any reader's labors. In this book MacIntyre tells the story of four traditions: the Aristotelian, the Augustinian, the Scottish, and the rise of the liberal tradition. His narrative shows the interaction of these in a manner that illumines our current intellectual and moral context. . . ." —Commonweal"It is a step in the right direction, not of returning to some Catholic version of fundamentalist bibliotary, but of reading a Christian theologian and philosopher whose immense wisdom repays careful study by Christians and non-Christians alike." —New Oxford Review“Whose Justice? Which Rationality? is a work of signal importance ... [it] is usually convincing, always provocative, and has wide-reaching implications for the way we think about our historical moment." —Commentary“MacIntyre’s rich historical exposition displays all the erudition and philosophical subtlety that his readers have come to expect from his work. . . . [T]here is much to admire in MacIntyre’s unflinching indictment of liberal modernity.” —The New Criterion“[MacIntyre’s] diagnosis of what ails recent moral philosophy is brilliant.” —Wilson Quarterly“MacIntyre is widely informed and his story of developments in the traditions that he identifies is learned, interesting, and notably well-written.” —London Review of Books

Cornell University Press Atomic Tragedy
Book SynopsisAtomic Tragedy offers a unique perspective on one of the most important events of the twentieth century. As secretary of war during World War II, Henry L. Stimson (18671950) oversaw the American nuclear weapons program. In a book about how an experienced, principled man faltered when confronted by the tremendous challenge posed by the intersection of war, diplomacy, and technology, Sean L. Malloy examines Stimson''s struggle to reconcile his responsibility for the most terrible weapon ever known in human history with his long-standing convictions about war and morality. Ultimately, Stimson''s story is one of failure; despite his beliefs, Stimson reluctantly acquiesced in the use of the atomic bomb against heavily populated Japanese cities in August 1945. This is the first biography of Stimson to benefit from extensive use of papers relating to the Manhattan Project; Malloy has also uncovered evidence illustrating the origins of Stimson''s commitment to eliminating or refiningTrade ReviewMalloy rovides an important perspective on the continuing debate about the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in August 1945.... His study of Henry L. Stimson, who served as secretary of war during World War II, is valuable. Stimson, who was in his seventies during the war, was one of the Republican Party's most respected elder statesmen, having been in Hoover's and Taft's cabinets before. He was a deeply moral man who believed in the rule of law to keep international order. Yet despite his fervent belief in moral suasion, he succumbed to the allure of the atomic bomb—and all its attendant horrors—when presented with the possibility that the terrible war could be concluded through its use, even though at the expense of civilian life. Malloy's book... presents us with an updated and exceedingly insightful assessment of the aging statesman, perhaps no longer at the top of his game yet faced with one of our country's most challenging decisions during its most awful conflict. Malloy believes Stimson's decision to support the bomb went against his most cherished beliefs and was for many a disappointing conclusion to an outstanding career of public service.... This book is highly recommended for all collections. * Library Journal (starred review) *Sean L. Malloy's richly detailed, well-argued book is the latest addition to the growing literature on Stimson that offers a critical analysis of his role in what is arguably the most momentous U.S. defense and foreign policy decision of the modern era—to use nuclear weapons against Japan and as a diplomatic tool against the Soviet Union. Malloy's goal is daunting, especially in a relatively brief book, but he achieves it surprisingly well. Making extensive use of archival resources, Malloy employs the lens of biography to recapture Stimson's complicated relationship to the bomb and the context of its use.... This book is a well-written, informative, judicious account that will be useful to historians as well as policy analysts and ethicists. -- Monroe H. Little * Journal of American History *Showing originality, Sean Malloy approaches the decision to use the bomb from the perspective of a key player, Secretary of War Henry Stimson, who had a record of opposition to indiscriminate attacks on civilians, evident misgivings about the prospective use of the atomic bomb, and concern about the implications of its use for future peace and security. -- Lawrence D. Freedman * Foreign Affairs *Using the life and perspective of the erudite, elitist, loyal, compassionate, and complicated Secretary of War, Henry L. Stimson, to drive his narrative forward, Malloy examines the development of the bomb and the decision to use it. Anyone looking for a review of atomic bomb scholarship as well as a sense of the actual decision-making process will find Malloy's thoughtful and very accessible account both enlightening and thought provoking.... Atomic Tragedy is well worth the read. -- Jonathan F. Phillips * Military History of the West *

Book Synopsis1. This bold work takes on many of the myths of Ottoman tolerance of Jews. 2. It links ties between Muslims and Jews in Turkey to denial of the Armenian genocide. 3. It presents meaningful information about the history of Muslim-Jewish relations, reflection on the Jewish experience in Turkey, and ignorance of inconvenient historical facts.Trade ReviewSultanic Saviors and Tolerant Turks is a tour de force that is written with a backdrop of 500 years of Jewish history, spanning from when the Ottoman Empire embraced Jewish refugees fleeing Spain in 1492 all the way until today. In between those years, there were days of honey and days of onions, and as Baer shows, it was often only the sweetness we heard about, with the bitterness buried deep within the souls who suffered it, covered up by an 'utopian narrative of Ottoman and Turkish Jewish history.' -- Louis Fishman * Turkish Studies *In this disturbing and thought-provoking book, Marc David Baer, a Jewish American and a long-time academic scholar of Turkish Studies, bursts the bubble that the Turks throughout history were "God's rod" for the Jews, who smote the antisemitic Christians, welcomed Jews from the Spanish Inquisition and saved them from the Holocaust. * Times Literary Supplement TLS *Table of ContentsContents<\>PrefaceAcknowledgmentsIntroduction: Friend and Enemy1.
