  • Spring and No Flowers: Memories of an Austrian

Intellect Books Spring and No Flowers: Memories of an Austrian

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisAlbertine Gaur shares with the reader her childhood memories of the period just before, and during, the Second World War in Austria, her homeland. She relives this time of great social and political upheaval, depicting it through the eyes of a childhood as she passes from infancy to adolescence. It is a unique story, full of naïve poignancy, told with a poetic simplicity which helps us have a better understanding of how 'events' were seen and interpreted by a young person, struggling with the many diverse problems of 'growing up'. Incidentally, the book gives us an insight into child psychology and how children came to terms with fear, horror and violence but were to bear the scars of the trauma throughout their lives. It is a moving narrative, individual but, at the same time, universal in its appeal. She relates a personal drama, often with tragic implications, in which the characters are 'ordinary people' but who, in their different ways, portray the very passions and emotions which motivate society. To read about it is an enriching experience.Table of ContentsChapter One: The Time in the Garden Chapter Two: Jesuits and Nazis Chapter Three: 1945 – Endgame 83 Contents

Book SynopsisYou’re It! is a brilliantly observed hop, skip and jump down memory lane; a celebration of the days when you used to get home from school, hop out of your school clothes, skip over to your best friend's house and jump around all afternoon until Mum called you in for tea. Nowadays, those classic – and universal – games of Hopscotch, Skipping, Bulldog and Hide and Seek are almost forgotten, rarely played, rarely passed on as generations come and go. With You’re It! you can relive those fun and silly games in this beautifully illustrated, wonderfully nostalgic book celebrating the games we remember from our childhoods as well the days themselves.

  • A Guide to the Classics: Or How to Pick the Derby

Imprint Academic A Guide to the Classics: Or How to Pick the Derby

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisOriginally written in 1936 by two young Cambridge Fellows, A Guide to the Classics is a light-hearted manual on how to pick the Derby winner. However, as the tongue-in-cheek title suggested, there is more to the book than meets the eye, especially as one of the young dons went on to become, according to his 1990 Telegraph obituary, ''the greatest political philosopher in the Anglo-Saxon tradition since Mill or even Burke''.The book takes the abstraction out of the Derby by attacking the systems which had been developed by generations of ''form'' experts. It exposes theoretical solutions as fraudulent instead it applies hard-headed empirical and historical analysis. Oakeshott went on to apply this methodology to his famous critique of ''rationalism'' in politics. This long-awaited edition of Griffith and Oakeshott's classic text includes a new preface and foreword by horse racing journalist and author Sean Magee, and political commentator Peter Oborne.

Book Synopsis'a wonderfully atmospheric tale ... offers a brief, magical escape to a kinder, simpler time' – Roger Cox, The Scotsman It's 1968, and the fishermen of Kinloch are preparing to celebrate the old New Year on the twelfth of January. The annual pilgrimage to the Auld Stones is a tradition that goes back beyond memory, and young Hamish, first mate on the Girl Maggie, is chuffed that he’s been invited to this exclusive gathering – usually reserved for the most senior members of Kinloch's fishing community. Meanwhile, it appears that the new owners of the Firdale Hotel are intent upon turning their customers teetotal, such is the exorbitant price they are charging for whisky. Wily skipper Sandy Hoynes comes up with a plan to deliver the spirit to the thirsty villagers at a price they can afford through his connections with a local still-man. But when the Revenue are tipped off, it looks as though Hoynes and Hamish’s mercy mission might run aground. Can the power of the Auld Stones come to their rescue, and is the reappearance of a face from Hoynes' past a sign for good or ill?Trade Review'a wonderfully atmospheric tale, best consumed on a chilly winter’s night in front of a roaring fire with a bottle of single malt close to hand ... this book offers a brief, magical escape to a kinder, simpler time' -- Roger Cox * The Scotsman *'superb, feel good, laugh out loud… just wonderful' * Waterstones Horsham *'A superb page-turner packed with humour' * The Herald, 50 best books to give this Christmas *'an excellent read, with echoes of Whisky Galore and Para Handy' -- Graham Drew * Dundee Courier, Book of the Week 10/10 *'A Whisky-Galore-style caper' * Sunday Post *'Denzil Meyrick sure knows how to conjure details of character and place that keep readers invested in knowing what happens next, and those skills are very much on display in this atmospheric tale, alongside the author’s trademark humour' * LoveReading.co.uk *'Funny, beautiful, and capturing the spirit of the seafaring community of Kinloch, it is most definitely recommended’ * JenMedBookReviews *'This heartwarming and seasonal tale is a joy. • Woolworth's: 100 Years on the High Street

Historic England Woolworth's: 100 Years on the High Street

    3 in stock

Book SynopsisWoolworth’s bright red signboard was a beacon on British and Irish high streets for nearly a century. American in origin, Woolworth’s grew rapidly after the first branch opened in Liverpool in 1909. The business model – with inexpensive goods piled on counter tops – scored an immediate hit with British consumers. By 1930 there were 400 stores, and by 1960 over 1000. With its own architects’ department and regional construction teams, Woolworth’s erected hundreds of prominent stores in shopping centres throughout England, Scotland, Ireland and Wales. It is these buildings – often typical of the commercial architecture of their day – which provide the focus of this book. This is not, however, a conventional architectural history – it is the story of Woolworth’s seen through the prism of its stores. The Woolworth’s chain was of huge cultural importance, shaping and reflecting fundamental changes – mostly American in origin – that took place in the nation’s shopping habits. Despite its dominant position on the high street, by the 1960s Woolworth’s was beginning to lose its way. As people acquired cars and freezers and began to desert the high street, Woolworth’s tried to stay ahead of the game with unsuccessful ventures into out-of-town and catalogue shopping. But by the time of its demise in 2009, a shrunken Woolworth’s owned just two of the stores which it had built and developed over the preceding century. The closure of the last British stores in January 2009 provoked an outpouring of nostalgia and grief. Woolworth’s occupied the heart of many communities, physically and commercially, and its heritage deserves celebration. Trade Review... Morrison's book is wonderfully revealing about the design and history of a business that was a familiar, and much loved, presence in Britain for a century and is essential reading for its insights into architectural, retail, and social history.Philip Wilkinson, English Buildings BlogIt may be time to reconsider the architectural and heritage value of the former Woolworth stores, and this excellent publication should help others to do that.Ann Robey, Transactions of the Ancient Monuments SocietyTable of ContentsIntroduction: Woolworth’s legacy 1. Book SynopsisTumshie is the Halloween story of a dad and son making old fashioned Halloween lanterns and a costume together. The story is set today in Scotland, and it's inspired by how a Scottish Halloween used to be celebrated. Back when Halloween meant 'guising' (today that is trick or treating) and 'dooking for apples' (bobbing for apples) and carving out a tumshie (Scots for turnip) was a rite of passage for Scottish children who needed the strength of an ox and the stubbornness of a donkey.

Book SynopsisLONGLISTED FOR THE SAMUEL JOHNSON PRIZE 2014 ‘A symphonic poem about postwar England and Englishness … A masterpiece’ Financial Times The 1950s were not grey. In Jonathan Meades’s detailed, petit-point memoir they are luridly polychromatic. They were peopled by embittered grotesques, bogus majors, vicious spinsters, reckless bohos, pompous boors, drunks, suicides. Death went dogging everywhere. Salisbury had two industries: God and the Cold War. For the child, delight is to be found everywhere – in the intense observation of adult frailties, in landscapes and prepubescent sex, in calligraphy and in rivers. This memoir is an engrossing portrait of a disappeared provincial England, a time and place unpeeled with gruesome relish.Trade Review‘By far the best picture of the 1950s I have read’ George Walden, The Times ‘A sulphurously brilliant alphabetical stroll through the seamier byways of the author’s youth in post-war Salisbury’ Jane Shilling, Evening Standard, Books of the Year ‘A radiant account of Britain getting itself together’ Kathryn Hughes, BBC Radio 4, Books of the Year ‘An Encyclopaedia of Myself is a corrective – an anti-misery memoir’ Stuart Jeffries.
