Book SynopsisThe last great age of steam in Britain is revisited in this new collection of superb photographs from the extensive archive of the Railway Magazine. Author Pete Kelly, editor of The Railway Magazine Guide to Modelling, looks back to a time when streamlined steam express trains charged headlong through the English countryside every day of the week. The 1930s would see a host of iconic engines constructed - such as the legendary LNER A4s, the beautiful LMS Coronation Class locos, the rare LMS Princess Royal Class and the workhorse LNER Class V2 engines built in large numbers for mixed traffic. This new volume collects rare images offering a glimpse of the days when these incredible engines could be found hard at work all over Britain.

Book SynopsisWhen A.A. Milne and E.H Shepard first came together in 1923 to create the world of Winnie-the-Pooh and his companions in the Hundred Acre Wood, no one could have foreseen the impact this unique collaboration was going to have on children’s literature and, indeed, children, all over the world. Now, one hundred years on, the characters they created are still as cherished as they ever were. Millions of books in fifty different languages have been sold around the world; films have been huge global box-office successes; merchandise from pyjamas to placemats - all have contributed to keep Winnie-the-Pooh and his friends in our hearts and minds. But what of the two men who created these iconic characters? How did they come to collaborate and what were the secrets of their successful partnership? In this beautiful full-colour volume, author James Campbell brings to life these two remarkable men, their professional and personal relationships, complex families, strengths and weaknesses. From working together at Punch magazine in the early 1920s and co-creating the four iconic Winnie-the-Pooh titles - When We Were Very Young (1924), Winnie-the-Pooh (1926), Now We Are Six (1927) and The House at Pooh Corner (1928) - through the success of the books and their reception both at home and abroad, their wartime experiences, other collaborations (most notably on Shepard’s renowned illustrations for and Milne’s dramatization of Kenneth Graham’s The Wind in the Willows into Toad of Toad Hall) and their legacies which continue to this day.Illustrated with excerpts from original manuscripts and drawings, previously unseen draft illustrations, photographs, documents, ephemera and more, this timely book looks back on their lives and work, from the first sketches to the illustrations we know and love and on to the characters’ later incarnations at Disney for new generations.

  • Military Misreadings of Shakspere

Nine Elms Books Military Misreadings of Shakspere

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisFrom the deliberate, but delightful, misspelling of Shakespeare in the title to the carefully portrayed perils of being a Victorian soldier and the appropriately selected Shakespearian quotes to go alongside each cartoon, Thomas Seccombe’s book will resonate with all who have an interest in observing life – military and otherwise. Seccombe was a true son of the Victorian Empire and served in The Royal Artillery until retiring as a Lieutenant-Colonel in 1881. This book was first published in 1880 and was so popular that it went on to six reprints in the following two years. Seccombe subsequently had a flourishing civilian career as an illustrator. Some 140 years later, even today’s readers will see why Military Misreadings of Shakspere [sic] was such a success. Seccombe’s subtle, but perceptive, observations of human character are as true today as they ever were. He had a wonderful eye for detail as well as the ridiculous – but never with malice even when pairing his cartoons with quotes from the Bard of Avon. This re-issued edition has the added benefit of former Grenadier Paul Cordle’s highly informative commentary which puts Seccombe’s army into perspective and relates regiments to their modern successors-in-arms. With a similar eye for detail as the original illustrator, military historian Paul brings the illustrations to life with fascinating military observations.Trade Review“This book is fun; it throws an amusing light on the British Army as the British Empire approached the apogee of its power... This short book should make a colourful addition to the home of anyone remotely interested in military history and Shakespeare; and I wish it success” General Sir Jack Deverell KCB OBE DLTable of ContentsForeword. • Granny's Kitchen Cupboard: A lifetime in over 100

HarperCollins Publishers Granny's Kitchen Cupboard: A lifetime in over 100

Book SynopsisAccumulated over many years, 'Granny', the enigmatic collector behind this book, presents a selection of quirky post-war goods, advertising and kitchen items. In Granny’s Kitchen Cupboard you’ll find a remarkable array of British twentieth-century ephemera. From children's toys, boil dressings and chocolate wrappers to butane fuel and TCP, this selection is an incredible collection of innovative advertising designs, odd curios that have long since been replaced by modern technologies, and recognisable old brands. After the end of austerity in Britain in the early 1950s, consumerism boomed and these objects portray the societal change that followed. Beautifully arranged throughout, the contents of this book reflect aspects of a long life, most of it lived in a single house in the Home Counties. Nothing was thrown away – everything was recycled and reused in a way that says something about their time, in particular the thrifty mindset instilled by rationing in World War Two. The collection features old household brands that have evolved into various iterations into the present day, such as Harrods, Johnson’s, Vaseline, Vicks, Elastoplast, the AA, Strepsils, W H Smith, Boots, Hoover, Happy Shopper and Lego. But this collection also features some odd items that may evoke nostalgia or even amusement, including fascinating catalogues, vintage pastille tins, an apothecary of unusual medicines, odd household cleaners not to mention rifle cartridges. The book also includes text that divulges the history and use of each object.

Book SynopsisConscription, a feature of the British Army in wartime, did not cease with the end of the Second World War. For almost another two decades, men were conscripted for National Service and two years in the armed forces. For many it brought some discipline to their lives, for others, they got to see the world. Some fought in action in Cyprus, Malaya, Kenya, Korea and in many other far-flung parts of the dwindling empire. During the Cold War, it also ensured Britain could call on a professionally trained group of men in times of war.It was all to end by the early 1960s, but hundreds of thousands of men were trained using the information enclosed within the pages of The National Serviceman’s Handbook, a compilation of the various army training manuals issued throughout National Service.

Book SynopsisThe London, Midland & Scottish Railway (LMS) claimed to be the largest private enterprise concern in the British Empire. It was Britain's largest steam railway and the only one to operate in England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, as well as having two short stretches of line in the Irish Republic. It was the world's largest owner of railway hotels and the world's largest railway shipping operator. Mainly a steam railway, it had a significant electric service out of Euston in London, and on Merseyside and Manchester. One of the leaders in diesel shunting locomotives, the company was a pioneer of using mechanical handling equipment, including large coaling towers. The LMS was mainly a freight railway, but it was still able to boast the best railway carriages, even on suburban services, where there was more legroom than was offered by other companies. Full of little-known facts, illustrated throughout and including a useful timeline, The LMS Story is the latest ad

  • Standing in Line: A Memoir: 30 Years of Obsessive

Pitch Publishing Ltd Standing in Line: A Memoir: 30 Years of Obsessive

Book SynopsisStanding in Line is a humorous memoir, based on a variety of experiences in The Queue, one of sport's most fascinating traditions. Told through the eyes of a ten-year-old boy becoming a 39-year-old man, it is a love letter both to Wimbledon and to the wonder of British summertime. Watching the Championships is a national pastime, and this book is full of the ups and downs out on court, as well as the memorable pop-cultural moments off it. It is set against the desperate wait for a British Gentlemen's champion, viewed against the global reality show Wimbledon has become - transcending sport and class, yet still embracing tradition. Illustrated with drawings from renowned artist and author Zebedee Helm, the book observes both the changing world around us and the behaviour of the half-million fans who cram themselves into this leafy corner of London for two weeks every year. Standing in Line is a joyful, gently nostalgic read for anyone who has found themselves gazing for hours on end at coverage of Wimbledon.

Book SynopsisIn this revealing memoir of childhood, the author shows not only what affected his family, but also reveals a large slice of social history concerning the lives of all ordinary working-class people struggling to live in the slums of the East End of London in those pre-Welfare State days. He writes with sympathy, and sometimes anger, of the overcrowded houses with families of anything up to eight children, as his own had, living in just two or three rooms with outside W.C. and water tap; of the reliance on charity and the soup kitchen for food; of trying to eke out what little income they had by buying stale bread and cracked eggs or other cheap food from the many itinerant street sellers.Yet this is also a chronicle of what was a turbulent time in British history, and especially in the East End, with its then still large Jewish and Irish populations. So here too is an eyewitness account of the Depression, and of the provocative marches by Sir Oswald Mosley's British Union of Fascists through the area, culminating in the Battle of Cable Street that saw the marchers turned back by the efforts of Jewish, Irish, communist and socialist protestors. Above all, however, Norman Jacobs writes with affection of the area and its extraordinary mix of peoples, as well as the now-vanished aspects of everyday life, such as the music hall, the two-valve radio, and the first Cup Final to be played at Wembley.
