Better pass boldly into that other world, in the full glory of some passion, than fade and wither dismally with age.'Revealing the truths and realities about Irish society in the early 20th century, Joyce's Dubliners challenged the prevailing image of Dublin at the time. A group portrait made up of 15 short stories about the inhabitants of Joyce's native city, he offers a subtle critique of his own town, imbuing the text with an underlying tone of tragedy. Through his various characters he displays the complicated relationships, hardships and mundane details of everyday life and the desire for escape a yearning that so closely mirrored his own experiences.

Book SynopsisThe companion volume to the cult Japanese Pattern Magic and Pattern Magic 2 that fans have been waiting for.In this new addition to the Pattern Magic series, Tomoko Nakamichi brings the subject alive by showing the finished designs in three dimensions. All the measurements and scaling information you need to start pattern making is included and as throughout the series, all the patterns are based on a basic block* which supplied in the book. Easy–to–follow, step–by–step text with clear diagrams and beautiful photography will teach you how to sculpt with fabric, creating beautiful shapes, waves and accents. You will also learn to create dynamic movement in garments, using ruffles, shirring and precise, sharply pleated lines and step–by–step instructions and diagrams will ensure that your own patterns translate beautifully to your choice of garment. Photographs of the finished garments will inspire you to create your own designs.Learn how to bring beautiful workmanship to your patterns:Sculpting a surfaceMaking WavesParing down and opening outWearing a polyhedronOutlining a surfaceLook at dynamic movement in fabrics:Full–bodied ruffleWearing a bagElastic shirringSerrated lines*The dress form used as the basis for the designs in this book is the Bunka–style sloper (block) for an adult Japanese woman. All patterns are for a size M Japanese woman. The position of the cutting and opening out lines, the allowances, and other measurements may vary according to garment size. If you are using the half–scale dress form, reduce the full–sized measurements on the drawings by half when you develop the patterns. From the author:''For me, it''s not all about pretty silhouettes. What starts me drawing a pattern is the sight of something that I find interesting or beautiful, and want to bring to life as a garment. There''s an irresistible pleasure in sketching out the lines over and over, and seeking out their shape as I assemble them. Sometimes, I''ll put something together that I love, only to have second thoughts a little while later and find myself back at my drawing. I guess it''s the little things that happen, the things I hear and see on a daily basis, that make me work this way.I''ll go with what I have for now. Although, who knows, I could be having second thoughts again soon…''

  • Making Sense of Chaos

Penguin Books Ltd Making Sense of Chaos

Book SynopsisDoyne Farmer is the world's leading thinker on technological change. For decades he has focused on the question of how we can make sense of the data of today to see where the world is going tomorrow. This wonderful book applies these insights to economics, addressing the big global issues of environmental sustainability, and the well-being and prosperity of people around the world' Max Roser, Founder of Our World in DataWe live in an age of increasing complexity, where accelerating technology and global interconnection hold more promise and more peril than any other time in human history. As well as financial crises, issues around climate change, automation, growing inequality and polarization are all rooted in the economy, yet standard economic predictions fail us. Many books have been written about Doyne Farmer and his pioneering work in chaos and complexity theory. Making Sense of Chaos is the first in his own words, presenting a manifesto for doing economics better. In a tale of science and ideas, Farmer fuses his profound knowledge with stories from his life to explain how to harness a scientific revolution to address the economic conundrums facing society. Using big data and ever more powerful computers, we can for the first time apply complex systems science to economic activity, building realistic models of the global economy. The resulting simulations and the emergent behaviour we observe form the cornerstone of complexity economics. This new science, Farmer shows, will allow us to test ideas and make significantly better economic predictions and, ultimately, create a better world.

    20 in stock

Book SynopsisTrade ReviewSpectacular and terrifyingly true. David Graeber's theory of the broken capitalist workforce is right - work has become an end in itself. A timely book from the most provocative anthropologist and thinker of our time. -- Owen JonesEqually explosive, my anarchist friend, David Graeber, yet again has thrown a hand grenade into the political economy debate with his Bullshit Jobs (Allen Lane), a call to strike out for freedom from meaningless work. -- John McDonnell * New Statesman, Books of the Year *Here's a gift for a friend working in PR or HR. David Graeber's thesis is that they are working in"bullshit jobs". A bullshit job, he says, is one that its holder knows to be pointless or pernicious even though they must pretend otherwise. There are five sorts: flunkies (commissionaires, receptionists), goons (lobbyists, lawyers), duct tapers (who sort out problems others have created), box tickers, and taskmasters (management). It's a provocative case ... but you get the feeling he is on to something; there do seem to be a lot of pointless jobs in the modern economy -- Robbie Millen * The Times, Books of the Year *Anthropologist David Graeber embarks on a provocative quest to find and explain the existence of countless mindless and pointless roles. He divides them into "flunkies", "goons", "duct-tapers", "box-tickers", and "taskmasters". It is an entertaining, if subjective study of a problem and an examination of potential answers, including a universal basic income. -- Andrew Hill * Financial Times, Business Book of the Year *Anthropology professor and colourful anarchist David Graeber has opened a Pandora's box of the modern era by questioning the relevance of the swollen ranks of middle management and bullshit jobs that have cropped up across a variety of industries. A controversial but thought-provoking endeavour * City AM Book of the Year *An LSE anthropologist with a track record of countering economic myths through a mix of anecdote, erudition, and political radicalism, Graeber is as good an analyst of the increasingly cowpatted field of modern employment as one could wish. And entertaining and thoroughly depressing read... it is extremely thought-provoking -- Tim Smith-Laing * Telegraph *A provocative, funny and engaging book... that captures the imagination and deserves our attention * Financial Times *

Book Synopsis''This is a marvellous football book, although it is much more than that.'' The Times''More Than A Shirt shows why geopolitics keeps invading the pitch.'' The Economist''Extensively researched and wonderfully written, Joey''s book deserves to be read by all'' Martin O''Neill''Intelligent, thoughtful and brilliant'' Chris Mason______________________________Twenty-Two Football Shirts that explain the world, geopolitics and the biggest stories of our timeFootball is the world''s most popular sport, and the shirts worn by teams and their supporters are its greatest means of cultural expression. Every year clubs launch new kits with increasingly extravagant marketing campaigns and convoluted explanations of how their designs reflect their history and local community. But football shirts are much more than just a symbol of which club we support. A seemingly innocuous combination of colours, sponsor logos and materials can all reflect the social values, financial struggles and political ideologies of the day, as geopolitical issues increasingly seep into every aspect of the game. Investigative journalist Joey D''Urso has travelled across the globe, combining on-the-ground reporting with unparalleled analysis to collate a list of the twenty-two football shirts that best explain the modern world.? More Than A Shirt?will take fans on a journey from Birmingham to Belgrade and onto Medellin and Mumbai, outlining how we can see the war in Ukraine in the shirt of Schalke in Germany or China''s foreign policy in West Bromwich Albion''s; how the shirts of state-owned clubs are used for sportswashing; and why the French national kit embodies worldwide migration patterns. A compelling and eye-opening exploration, More Than A Shirt?is essential reading for any football fan and will change the way you think about the beautiful game''s most universal symbol.______________________________''Thoroughly resourceful and revealing'' Jon Spurling, FourFourTwo''Colourful... a treat for anyone interested in football and politics'' Patrick Maguire, The Times''Original and innovative... a Parts Unknown for the game'' Miguel Delaney, Independent''Smart, warm and original'' Matt Chorley, BBC Radio 5 Live

Book SynopsisLiving Justice introduces readers to the past, present, and future of Catholic social thought. The third edition features significant new material on Pope Francis, including his new encyclical on the environment. It also features case studies on the global migration crisis, human trafficking, and more.Trade ReviewThis new, updated edition of Living Justice will be enthusiastically welcomed by all who want to give their students an accurate, comprehensive, and reader-friendly introduction to Catholic social teaching. -- Jon Nilson, Loyola University ChicagoI am grateful for this updated edition of Massaro's Living Justice. I have used the earlier edition for several years now, and my students have found it a clear and accessible presentation. However, as Fr. Massaro notes, Pope Francis has changed Catholic social teaching forever, not only with his writing but especially in his action. This new edition nicely integrates reflections on the Pope’s personal way of ‘living justice,’ as well as exploring his written contributions in Evangelii Gaudium and Laudato Si’. I continue to find particularly helpful the questions for reflection provided at the end of each chapter, as well as the quite useful section on ‘Applying Catholic Social Teaching in the Real World,’ always the challenge for my students and for all of us in the Church. -- James R. Guardian Faber Publishing Who Will Tell My Story

Book SynopsisA moving account of life in Palestine in the wake of the events of October 7th. 'Who Will Tell My Story? finds beauty and grace amongst the rubble while never shying away from the brutal realities of living through such relentless and cruel oppression.' NIKESH SHUKLAIt was a sleepless night full of tears and fear . . . I am not sure - if I make it out alive - if I will still possess what makes me, me. And I wonder: will I be there in the future, or will I be someone to be remembered in a diary or over a cup of tea by a friend after I am gone?Who Will Tell My Story? presents an ordinary existence interrupted by unfathomably seismic and unjust events. On the ground during the first months of the assault on Gaza following the events of 7 October, the author of this diary - first published in The Guardian - maps out the physical and psychological terrain of a life under siege. Traversing the bombed ruins of his country, we see him as he searches for foodstuffs and power to charge devices, maintaining contact with the outside world, checking in with his friends and family along the way; we see his heart swing between despair and faith, fear and optimism, his mind imagining different futures and confronting the brutal truth of his present. Shining a light on the fate of all those living through war and occupation, Who Will Tell My Story? conveys with astonishing clarity how seeds of hope might linger amid the most trying of times.

  • Indigenous Research Ethics: Claiming Research

Emerald Publishing Limited Indigenous Research Ethics: Claiming Research

Book SynopsisGiven the extreme variety of research issues under investigation today and the multi-million-dollar industry surrounding research, it becomes extremely important that we ensure that research involving Indigenous peoples is ethically as well as methodologically relevant, according to the needs and desires of Indigenous peoples themselves. This distinctive volume presents Indigenous research as strong and self-determined with theories, ethics and methodologies arising from within unique cultural contexts. Yet the volume makes clear that challenges remain, such as working in mainstream institutions that may not regard the work of Indigenous researchers as legitimate ‘science’. In addition, it explores a twenty-first-century challenge for Indigenous people researching with their own people, namely the ethical questions that must be addressed when dealing with Indigenous organisations and tribal corporations that have fought for – and won – power and money. The volume also analyses Indigenous/non-Indigenous research partnerships, outlining how they developed respectful and reciprocal relationships of benefit for all, and argues that these kinds of best practice research guidelines are of value to all research communities.Table of ContentsChapter 1. • The Queen

    Bloomsbury Publishing PLC The Queen

Book SynopsisMatthew Dennison's elegant and magisterial biography of Her late Majesty, updated following the death of Elizabeth II and the accession of King Charles III. 'A worthy and balanced overview of the Queen's life. Dennison is especially good on her childhood... quietly, tactfully, tastefully reverent.'The Times The death of Queen Elizabeth II on 8 September 2022 was more than just a moment of profound sadness; her passing marked the end of an era in our national life – and the final closing of the Elizabethan Age. For millions of people, both in Britain and across the world, Elizabeth II was the embodiment of monarchy. Her long life spanned nearly a century of national and global history, from a time before the Great Depression to the era of Covid-19. Her reign embraced all but seven years of Britain's postwar history up to the accession of her son King Charles III; she was served by fifteen UK prime ministers from Churchill to Truss, and witnessed the administrations of fourteen US presidents from Truman to Biden. In this brand-new biography of the longest-reigning sovereign in British history, Matthew Dennison traces her life and reign across an era of unprecedented and often seismic social change. Stylish in its writing and nuanced in its judgements, The Queen charts the joys and triumphs as well as the disappointments and vicissitudes of a remarkable royal life; it also assesses the achievement of a woman regarded as the champion of a handful of 'British' values endorsed – if no longer practised – by the bulk of the nation: service, duty, steadfastness, charity and stoicism.Trade ReviewA worthy and balanced overview of the Queen's life. Practical Inspiration Publishing Breakthrough Babies: An IVF pioneer's tale of

Book SynopsisAn account from the frontline of fertility treatment, giving a unique insight into not only the medical and scientific advances involved but the human cost and rewards behind this life-changing technology.Simon Fishel worked with Robert Edwards during his pioneering early IVF research and was part of the team in the world’s first IVF clinic, with all the trials and tribulations that involved at the time, including a writ for murder! As the science developed over the decades so did his career, as he sought to do more for patients and taught the new technologies to doctors all over the world. He came up against regulatory and establishment barriers, including fighting a 3-year legal case in the High Court of Justice and a death threat from a doctor if he refused to work with him. The clinic he founded has grown into the largest IVF group in the UK, developing exciting new procedures, and he has helped establish clinics throughout the world, even being invited to introduce IVF to China.Trade Review"I've enjoyed many medical memoirs, and have read quite a few about the miracle of birth-but these were midwife memoirs. This one starts way before actual births and tells of the growth of IVF treatment. It was a fascinating read. Simon Fishel originally worked with Robert Edwards and Patrick Steptoe, pioneers in IVF treatment. He later set up an IVF unit in a hospital in Nottingham. You hear of so many couples having IVF treatment now-relatives, friends; so it was interesting to go back to its infancy. There were amazing advances made-whilst at the same time they suffered much opposition to what they were doing. This book is not just about miracle babies, there would be many hurdles and surprising events I didn't envisage too. The book contains photos and news clippings." • Can We be Great Again

Swift Press Can We be Great Again

Book SynopsisFormer Foreign Secretary Jeremy Hunt's Can We Be Great Again? is a thought-provoking book about our place in the world in the century ahead. Looking back at his time as this country's global ambassador, Jeremy Hunt asks: is Britain a minor player, marginalized by our departure from the EU and dwarfed by the rise of new economies? Or is there a major role for us to play in a rapidly changing international order? With the election of President Trump, the answer to that question matters. A world that was already becoming more dangerous has also become more unpredictable. As competition increases between economic and military superpowers, others must make choices. If the UK really is a busted flush, it would be reasonable to stand back, go with the flow and focus on defending our more narrow interests. But if we aren't, now more than ever is a moment to try and defend the huge progress in freedom and democracy we have seen over the last century.

  • What Went Wrong With Capitalism

Penguin Books Ltd What Went Wrong With Capitalism

    3 in stock

Book SynopsisWhat went wrong with capitalism? Ruchir Sharma's explanation is unlike any you have heard before. Progressives are partly right when they mock modern capitalism as socialism for the rich, but what really happened in recent decades is that government in developed nations expanded in just about every measurable dimension, from spending and regulation to the sheer scale of its rescues each time the economy wobbled. The result, Sharma says, is socialized risk, expensive government guarantees, for everyonewelfare for the poor, entitlements for the middle class, and bailouts for the rich. Voters say they are disillusioned with capitalism, but a system so distorted by government interventions is a dysfunctional version of free market ideals. As a result, productivity and economic growth have slowed sharply, shrinking the pie for everyone and stoking popular anger. Since these flaws developed as the government expanded, building an even bigger state will only double down on what's gone wrong. The answer Sharma offers is a series of seven fixes to restore the balance between state support and free markets and lay the path to a more prosperous and happier future.
