Book Synopsis'A brave writer whose books open up fundamental questions about life and art' – TelegraphIn this inspiring collection of essays, acclaimed writer and critic Olivia Laing makes a vivid and politically-engaged case for the importance of art – especially in the turbulent weather of the twenty-first century. We are often told art can’t change anything. In Funny Weather, Laing argues that it can. It changes how we see the world, it exposes inequality, and it offers fertile new ways of living.Across a diverse selection of essays, Laing profiles Jean-Michel Basquiat and Georgia O’Keeffe, interviews Hilary Mantel and Ali Smith, writes love letters to David Bowie and Freddie Mercury, and explores loneliness and technology, women and alcohol, sex and the body. Written with originality and compassion, Funny Weather is a celebration of art as a force of resistance and repair – and as an antidote to a frightening political moment.Trade ReviewA brave writer whose books open up fundamental questions about life and art * Telegraph *Olivia Laing is my new favourite non-fiction writer -- Nick HornbyLike all great critics, Olivia Laing combines formidable intelligence with boundless curiosity and fabulous taste, but she also has a rare quality of intimacy; an ability to connect the reader to a work of art or literature with a directness that lights it up like nothing else. It’s why I read her -- James LasdunHer observations and poetic incisiveness on art, writers and politics are a gift. This is a fascinating, excursive, tonic of a book -- Sinéad Gleeson, author of ConstellationsA thought-provoking, inspiring collection that you can go back to whenever the weather takes a funny turn * Evening Standard *Funny Weather gives the reader a tangible sense of the sprawling garden of work which Laing has planted. She is to the art world what David Attenborough is to nature: a worthy guide with both a macro and micro vision, fluent in her chosen tongue and always full of empathy and awe * Irish Times *Laing has acted as a kind of cultural sage for the past four years, an accidental literary grande dame of the emotional havoc wrought by late capitalism and digital disconnect * New York Magazine *Laing writes of her creative subjects in a winning, passionate voice that proves both soothing and galvanizing, especially amid a panic . . . It’s not just art we need in an emergency, but writers, like Laing, who gently guide our eyes to what’s out there -- Alina Cohen * Observer *The hospitality of world view in Olivia’s writing is a vital force in our disputatious present -- Maria Balshaw, director of TateLaing combines passion and curiosity in a collection of art-based essays and profiles that reflect the uncertainty of our age * Guardian *Never has a publication been more timely * Dazed *A warm, thinking, enticing sweep of a book, like spending the afternoon with your brainiest friend -- Kate Mosse, author of The Burning ChambersA fine writer’s embrace of the artists who preceded her, friendly visits with their lives and loving acknowledgement of their foundational contributions. A work of joy in recognition -- Sarah SchulmanThe book to help you make sense of the world . . . [a] mesmerizing collection of essays . . . this unique and compassionate book is a mind-expanding opportunity to rethink how we live, and what we can do to change things for the better. * Stylist *A light-footed tour of enriching stories, lives, and ideas * Dazed and Confused *Her gift as a critic is her ability to imaginatively sympathize with her subjects in a way that allows the art and life of the artist to go on radiating meaning after the book is closed * Elle *Breathtaking, beautiful, funny, shocking, sad, revealing, and timely -- Nina Stibbe, author of Love, NinaI yield to absolutely no one in my admiration of Olivia Laing; her essays are magical liberations of words and ideas, art and love; they're the essence of great 21st century literature: brilliantly expressed, wildly uncontained, wilful and wonderfully unbound. -- Philip Hoare, author of RISINGTIDEFALLINGSTAROlivia Laing shines the light for art writing. Funny Weather urges us to humanise art, and listen to what artists say about life, love and crisis. -- Charlie PorterAn incivisive meditation on the value of heartfelt, messy art in our paranoid times * Telegraph *It’s not just art we need in an emergency, but writers, like Laing, who gently guide our eyes to what’s out there * Observer *Vibrant commentary on art and society by a writer with a sharp eye for the offbeat * Kirkus *Laing’s essays are urgent, compassionate, enlivening and acutely perceptive, and that’s true whether or not we encounter them “in an emergency” * the arts desk *Her words seem balefully accurate, given what has now overtaken us * Financial Times *Laing is an intelligent and acute writer, and this book is certainly interesting and assuredly well-written * Scotsman *Laing’s arts writing is sharp-minded, and her manner is generous toward both subject and reader * Washington Post *

Book SynopsisLONGLISTED FOR THE WAINWRIGHT PRIZE 2022A remarkable and powerful book, the rarest of things Nicolson is unique as a writer I loved it' EDMUND DE WAALFew places are as familiar as the shore and few as full of mystery and surprise. How do sandhoppers inherit an inbuilt compass from their parents? How do crabs understand the tides? How can the death of one winkle guarantee the lives of its companions? What does a prawn know?In Life Between the Tides, Adam Nicolson explores the natural wonders of the shoreline, from the extraordinary biology of its curious animals to the flow of our human history. This is an invitation to the water, where marvellous things wait an inch below the surface.Previously published as The Sea is Not Made of WaterTrade Review‘Miraculous … Effortlessly, in deft, sure and delightful prose, he segues through species, science and art to present tidal nature as a microcosm. The result is an utterly fascinating glimpse of a watery world we only thought we knew’Philip Hoare ‘A beautiful, powerful story of how we understand the unfolding change of the shore. This is a remarkable and powerful book, the rarest of things, both a call-to-arms and a call-to-pause and truly look. Nicolson is unique as a writer, happy soaked to the skin on the shoreline and happy unweaving skeins of philosophy. I loved it’Edmund de Waal ‘Pure joy. From the ecology of a sandhopper to the cosmic pull of the tides Adam Nicolson takes us paddling into the pools of our own nature, to places where boundaries are restlessly shifting and balance exists between tension and flow – a dazzling, kaleidoscopic exploration into the meaning of life itself’Isabella Tree ‘A fascinating guide to all things littoral: a natural history of the rockpool that teems with life … Endlessly interesting, its wonders unfurl, fractal-like, the more closely you examine it’Cal Flyn ‘The man who finds wonder in a winkle … Remarkable … In Nicolson’s hands the intertidal zone is shown to be rich and revelatory … It is as lyrical, learned and rambunctiously eccentric as his previous work … For a book so focused on non-human life, it is luminously humane’The Times ‘Exquisite … A bravura act of writing … This uniquely and terribly moving book is great literature indeed – reaches beyond itself to speak to us of the most profound and essential things’Alex Preston, Observer ‘One of our finest writers of non-fiction … Nicolson’s overarching theme in this book … goes to the very heart of what ecology is … the great pleasure of this book is that he does not allow the specifics of his enquiries to keep him from probing the big questions’Philip Marsden, Spectator

Canongate Books Bananas: How the United Fruit Company Shaped the

Book SynopsisIn this compelling history, Peter Chapman shows how the United Fruit Company took bananas from the jungles of Costa Rica to the halls of power in Washington, D.C., with not just clever marketing, but covert CIA operations, bloody coups and brutalised workforces. And how along the way they turned the banana into a blueprint for a new model of unfettered global capitalism: one that serves corporate power at any cost.Trade ReviewA gripping story of the ebbs and flows of US capitalism * * Guardian * *[An] insightful history of the company . . . [A] witty, energetic narrative * * New York Times Book Review * *A powerful example from the past . . . a century-long tale of plunder, bribery, corruption, labour abuse, death squads, military coups and war * * Financial Times * *Finely crafted . . . Chapman's broad-brush approach to history gives it a vigorous and entertaining narrative drive . . . Chapman's achievement is to make us realise what a long and complex moral journey even something as seemingly innocent as a banana has made to our fruit bowls -- Mark Cocker * * Guardian * *If you only read a handful of non-fiction books this year, [Bananas] is among your recommended five portions * * Observer * *Engagingly told . . . Delightful cameos of Carmen Miranda, Andy Warhol and Evelyn Waugh . . . Best is Chapman's account of the precarious ecology of the modern banana * * Independent * *The term banana republic has become so divested of meaning that it's been adopted by a mid-range clothing chain. Its sobering reality is spelled out in this clear, dryly witty account of United Fruit * * Metro * *Excellent, darkly humorous expose * * Herald * *A tale of corporate skulduggery, an irreversible lesson in agricultural folly and a musing on the banana's place on our collective palate . . . An impressive indictment of a deeply flawed corporation * * The Nation * *Any tinpot regime these days tends to get called a banana republic. We have to remember they were real, vicious and bloody regimes set up and toppled at the behest of US fruit companies. Those corporations gave globalisation a bad name before we even used the term, and Peter Chapman's racy but erudite read constantly makes you wonder how much has changed * * New Scientist * *

    Hodder & Stoughton Super Gut

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisBestselling author of the Wheat Belly franchise brings his next big, game changing idea - the human microbiome and the silent epidemic of SIBO - to the mainstream.Dr Davis has connected the dots between ''gut health'' and many common, modern ailments and complaints. 1 in 3 people have SIBO (small intestinal bacterial overgrowth), which causes a long list of health issues and illnesses; it is a silent and profound epidemic created by the absence of microbial species that our ancestors had even 50-100 years ago, which have been erased by the industrialisation of food and medicine. Super Gut shares a four-week plan to reprogram your microbiome based on research and techniques that not only gets to the root of many diseases but improves levels of oxytocin (the bonding/happy hormone), brain health and promotes anti-aging and weight loss. Dr Davis provides not just the science and case studies but also more than 40 recipes and solutions. In Super GuTrade ReviewSuper Gut reveals how virtually every aspect of our health is fundamentally influenced by the vast array of microscopic organisms living upon and within us. Dr Davis makes it clear that so many issues related to living in our modern world challenge this relationship and set the stage for illness. But the good news, as Super Gut so eloquently portrays, centres on our new found ability to improve the health and functionality of the vast array of microbes upon which we depend. It's clear that we can manipulate this relationship to our advantage. And Dr Davis shows us how. -- David Perlmutter, MD, author, #1 New York Times bestseller, Grain Brain, and Drop AcidReading Super Gut is reading an incredibly important manual on building the super 'hard drive' for a long, healthy, and productive life.... With easy to implement, inexpensive recommendations, it won't be long before you're forever grateful you took the time to read and implement.... All disease begins in the gut. So build a Super Gut! -- Dr Tom O’Bryan, author of The Autoimmune Fix and You Can Fix Your BrainSuper Gut brings the conversation into new territory. Bacteria are not the bad guys! Dr Davis' plan helps you replenish the microbiome and eliminate those culprits that are depleting us of essential natural probiotics that maintain a healthy gut. Microbiome medicine is an essential part of good health, disease prevention, vitality, and longevity. Bravo to Dr Davis on this newest addition to the literature. -- Dr Raphael Kellman, founder of Microbiome Medicine, author of The Microbiome Diet, The Microbiome Breakthrough, Microbiome ThyroidUnlike other books on the microbiome, Dr Davis has taken the conversation several steps further by showing how lost microbes can be restored and how an epidemic of overgrowth of undesirable species can be pushed back with often spectacular results. He packs the book with specific strategies and recipes so that the reader is well-equipped to regain health, vigour, even youthfulness. -- Dr Mark Hyman, New York Times bestselling author of The Pegan DietAn intriguing look into the science of the gut microbiome, and its implications for human health. Dr Davis brings his usual light to this area of science and follows that up with some practical advice. -- Dr Jason Fung, New York Times bestselling author of The Obesity Code

    20 in stock

Book SynopsisThe athlete's go-to guide for creating mental strength and achieving peak performance. Even among the most elite performers, certain athletes stand out as a cut above the rest, able to outperform in clutch, game-deciding moments. These athletes prove that raw athletic ability doesn't necessarily translate to a superior on-field experience, its the mental game that matters most. Sports participation is at an all-time high. While the calibre of their games may differ, athletes at every level have one thing in common: the desire to excel. In The Champion's Mind, sports psychologist Jim Afremow, PhD, offers the same advice he uses with Olympians, Heisman Trophy winners, and professional athletes, including: How to get in a "zone," thrive on a team, and stay humble; How to progress within a sport and sustain long-term excellence; Customizable pre-performance routines to hit full power when the gun goes off or the puck is dropped.Trade Review"The Champion's Mind "is loaded with great lessons, advice, and perspectives on how to be successful. The skills and strategies that Jim provides here are essential in carving a path to success, no matter what field you are in or what your goals are. I can honestly say that I have lived by many of the strategies offered in this book and I can also say I wish I had lived by more of them. But it's never too late to be as good as you can be!"--Dan Jansen, Olympic gold medalist, speed skating"I learned early on in my professional baseball career that players at the elite level are generally pretty similar from the perspective of physical aptitude. Yet, what tends to differentiate the all-stars from the rest of the pack resides between the ears. Jim Afremow does a great job of exploring this subject in "The Champion's Mind". This is a great book for coaches and athletes of all ages who are looking to improve performance at any level, in any sport."--Shawn Green, two-time MLB All-Star"The Champion's Mind" reveals the mental skills and strategies Olympic champions use to perform their best when it matters most. Dr. Afremow's matchless book is a must for athletes and coaches."--Shannon Miller, Olympic gold medalist, gymnastics"The Champion's Mind" is a mental training book that will help you reach your potential in sports. I highly recommend this book to all athletes and coaches."--Jackie Slater, NFL Hall of Famer "Dr. Afremow nails all the basics and gives readers an excellent window into how a champion's mind works before and during 'the process.'"--Randy Cross, three-time Super Bowl Champion "I read this book with my eyes wide open and the content continued to keep them open at all times. Jim's advice and tips are very simple and easy to understand. Read only one chapter at a time and apply it to your approach to Tennis, Sports, and Life."--Nick Bollettieri, Founder/President of Nick Bollettieri IMG Tennis Academy"The Champion's Mind "shows you how to take your game

  • Find Your WOW: How seeing the world differently

Brown Dog Books Find Your WOW: How seeing the world differently

Book SynopsisWhen did you last feel so overwhelmed by an experience that your jaw dropped? When were you so struck by something that you had goosebumps? When did you last say ‘WOW’ out loud and feel like a child again? Children say ‘WOW’ a lot. But in our busy, admin-filled, tech-driven adult lives finding time, energy and opportunity to say ‘WOW’ each day can seem impossible. Award-winning journalist and mindfulness specialist Lucy Stone has taught meditation to over 15,000 primary school children, and over the same period, taught thousands of adults including athletes, politicians and chief executives. Her observation that children found meditation far easier to grasp than adults led to a ground-breaking discovery: As adults we have lost our WOW, but the good news is we can get it back. Find Your WOW explores how finding moments of WOW is the secret to a happier, healthier, more creative and connected life. Building on her years of frontline teaching in classrooms and boardrooms, sensemaking, and research, Lucy has developed an innovative five-step framework that will help you to Find Your WOW every day. Packed full of practical techniques, the latest studies and unique insights, Lucy explores the science of WOW, the dangers of living in a ‘WOW-less world’, how to go ‘Good WOW hunting’ and why living in a ‘New WOW order’ can help those around us too. Find Your WOW will not only help you to see the world differently, it might just save your mind. ‘Lucy is the Queen of finding WOW in the everyday.’ – Amy Williams, Olympic Gold Medallist & TV Presenter

  • Drawing: A Complete Guide

Search Press Ltd Drawing: A Complete Guide

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisThis is an essential book for anyone learning to draw, or wishing to improve their drawing. Starting with the basics of drawing techniques, Civardi gives expert advice on drawing portraits, the clothed figure, hands and feet and scenery, finishing with a section on the importance of light and shade. Civardi's technical advice and practical tips, accompanied by his own outstanding drawings, make this an invaluable resource for any artist. Previously published as Giovanni Civardi's Complete Guide to Drawing (9781844482061) and now includes The Nude (9781844482443).Trade ReviewNov 09 Most of this first appeared as Giovanni Civardi's Complete Guide to Drawing, but this smaller format edition also includes the volume on The Nude. It's a sound introduction to drawing in pencil and the smaller page size makes it more manageable, but also means that you have to strain slightly to read the text, which has also been reduced. The style is best described as "classic", meaning that it's all well done, but perhaps slightly dated. If you don't mind that, and it's the technique that's more important to you, then this is a book it's hard to better. If your eyesight's not 100%, however, best buy a pair of stronger reading glasses as well. * Artbookreview.net * Dec 09 For those wishing to learn to draw or improve their skills this book is an essential read. Previously published material has been used along with new information in the compilation of this fabulous instructional volume. Packed full of beautiful illustrations, we begin with the very basics of drawing techniques, from description of use and simple mark making with pencil or graphite onto using carbon sticks and ink, each accompanied by many varied depictions where he tells us what media was used for each, and very importantly, what technique was used. All these details help the reader to understand the process of selecting media and technique to render the drawing they want to achieve. The section on portraits covers small details like hands, eyes and placement of features, all necessary to achieve a lifelike rendition through to full figures, both clothed and naked. The book is full of details such as anatomy of figures, and how to find the correct proportions to the fall of fabric on clothed figures, again in great detail and easy to follow. Scenery is covered in the same in depth way, from linear and aerial perspective, light and shade, tonal work and use of source material. All sections come with the same incredibly detailed illustration showing use of media and methods. If you want just one book to learn or improve your drawing skills, and draw well then this is the book for you. Its packed full of all the essentials you need to learn to create realistic 3d images in a 2d media. * JeannieZelos.com * Jan 2010 Drawing, A Complete Guide by Giovanni Civardi is a comprehensive exploration of hand drawing techniques and tools. While this book is focused on these techniques from a pure artistic point of view, the skills that are covered have real relevance and value for modern Graphic Designers. Technology changes everything and Graphic Design is no different. It doesn't seem so long ago that Graphic Design was a much more hands on discipline, with ideas mocked up on layout pads and then worked up through various refining stages, until the final design, along with a specification sheet overlay, was supplied for typesetting with the final artwork being produced through cut and pasting. Now it is possible for anyone with basic skills to produce understandable concepts using a PC and desktop printer, but there is real value for Graphic Designers to develop their drawing skills. Such skills can help Designers to quickly and clearly develop ideas wherever they are and can also allow them to produce hand drawn graphics for inclusion in finished designs. * Suite101.com * Mar 14 This a collection of smaller books which each delve into an element of drawing and cover the key parts using pictorial examples throughout. It is well laid out and can be easily accessed by both learners and tutors. As a concept art tutor I found the tutorials and information thorough and a great use of excellent examples. Having asked learners the response was positive and a definite request to access more. The anatomy sections covering the musculature of hands, feet and head were especially informative and helpful. I will be asking my subject librarian to purchase. * Marian Carr, Bradford College *Table of ContentsPreviously published as Giovanni Civardi's Complete Guide to Drawing 9781844482061 and now includes "The Nude" 9781844482443
