Taproot Press Peak Beyond Peak: The Unpublished Scottish
Book SynopsisIsobel Wylie Hutchison was many things: a botanist, traveller, poet and artist. She travelled solo throughout the arctic collecting plant samples, wrote and published extensive volumes of essays and poetry, and was - in short - one of the most remarkable Scottish figures of her time. However, since her death in 1982 her legacy has been forgotten compared with her male counterparts. Now Isobel can speak for herself again. While better known for her solo journeys across the Arctic, these essays detail Isobel's journeys across Scotland, including visits to Skye, John O' Groats and the various literary shrines across the country. Written with characteristic wit and a keen interest in both science and myth and folklore, the essays serve as important cultural markers not just of Scotland as it was and has developed, but of a woman's experience of travelling alone and a testament to the importance of cultural connection, exploration and communication.

Search Press Ltd Painting Watercolour Sea & Sky the Easy Way
Book SynopsisThis book builds on the success of Terry Harrison's Sea & Sky in Watercolour, adding six new projects and plenty of new paintings. Terry's clear, no-nonsense advice takes the mystery out of painting clouds, clear skies, sunsets, foam bursts, breaking waves, rippled water, reflections, boats, cliffs, rocks, beaches and much more. There are plenty of tips and techniques to show how to use Terry's specially made brushes to paint watercolour seascapes the easy way. There are then nine beautiful step-by-step projects that show the techniques in action.Trade ReviewApril 2015 By dealing with two perennially popular and persistently problematical subjects in one book, Terry Harrison demonstrates ways of handling both ground and aerial perspective. This is a relatively elementary book, but Terry has a way of explaining things that can have even the most experienced artist saying, 'Of course! His waves have motion and substance, his reflections hint at hidden depths and his clouds can contain real menace. There's a good variety of material here as well as landscapes, building and boats, of which Terry is a master. All round, this is excellent value. * Artist, The *March 2015 You'd expect nothing less than a comprehensive guide from Terry Harrison, and that's exactly what you get here. His 'easy way' is to work with a relatively limited palette and with a series of brushes he's developed that produce results quickly and predictably. Terry paints atmospheric scenes and all weather and conditions. You'll get storms and calm, waves crashing onto rocks or lapping a sandy shore. You'll get heavy clouds and peaceful sunsets. You'll also find boats, piers and buildings as well as all the other landscape elements associated with maritime subjects. Above all, what you'll get is Terry's patient and easily-followed guidance. He's one of those people who knows the question you're going to ask before you've thought of it yourself and he's there with just the right advice and just the right illustration. The Easy Way - I reckon that's it. Someone should bottle it. * SAA *Building on the success of his Sea and Sky in watercolour, this new book by Terry Harrison includes six fresh projects and many new paintings. Using his specially made brushes, Terry shows us how to capture sea and sky in clear step by step stages and with a disarmingly easy style. In all there are step-by-step projects and plenty of hints and tips. * Leisure Painter, The *February 2015 Terry Harrison isn’t the only person to have used “the easy way” in a book title, but he pretty much owns the phrase at the moment. Very sensibly, he makes no attempt to define it. You know that a Terry demonstration is going to be clear, succinct and easy to follow, and that’s probably enough. This new book is a comprehensive guide to just about every maritime subject there is, as long as it’s on the coast – we’re not in open water here. You get calm seas, rough seas, breaking and crashing waves as well as help on what to do with the horizon. At this point, moving upwards, we get to the sky – clear, cloudy, stormy and with the sun setting. As well as shorelines, cliffs and buildings, the odd boat finds its way in uncredited too, and Terry is particularly sound on the way boats sit in and not on the water. After these two-page exercises, the book concludes with a series of projects, fully demonstrated, that bring everything together. There’s no easy way to paint, you know that, but there is an enjoyable and fulfilling way to learn that makes it seem easy. How do you find that? Follow Terry Harrison. You won’t go wrong. * Artbookreview.net *Table of ContentsINTRODUCTION 6 Materials 8 My palette 10 Using photographs 12 Techniques 14 PAINTING SEAS 24 Calm water 26 Choppy water 28 Breaking waves 29 Crashing waves 30 A shoreline 31 Bands of colour 32 The horizon 33 PAINTING SKIES 34 A clear sky 36 A cloudy sky 37 A stormy sky 38 Another cloudy sky 40 A sunset 41 Painting reflections 42 Other elements 50 PROJECTS 58 Crashing Waves 52 Coastal Footpath 56 Sunset on the Sea 62 Breaking Wave Estuary Boats The End of the Pier On the Rocks Sunlit Shore Lighthouse in the Evening

Canongate Books How Music Works
Book SynopsisHow Music Works is David Byrne''s bestselling, buoyant celebration of a subject he has spent a lifetime thinking about. Drawing on his own work over the years with Talking Heads, Brian Eno, and his myriad collaborators - along with journeys to Wagnerian opera houses, African villages, and anywhere music exists - Byrne shows how music emerges from cultural circumstance as much as individual creativity. It is his magnum opus, and an impassioned argument about music''s liberating, life-affirming power.Trade ReviewIt was wildly ambitious to try and turn this galaxy of theory into a readable work of scholarship but Byrne has done it, and done it with style. Search Press Ltd A Beginner's Guide to Knitting on a Loom (New
Book SynopsisFor those who have struggled in the past to knit with needles, loom knitting is an easy craft to master which children and adults alike can learn in a few hours. Loom knitting is a revolutionary way of knitting that uses a circular or rectangular loom, or knitting board, consisting of a frame with pegs. Looms are easy and fun to use, even without conventional knitting experience. An individual can create almost anything, from knitted tubes for hats or socks to flat panels for scarves, shawls and sweaters. This new and updated book is designed as an essential reference and a hands-on project resource for the loom knitter. The first part of the book provides loom-knitting techniques for both round and rectangular looms, and knitting boards. An inspiring design section presents more than 35 patterns to get the new loom-knitter started. Also included are a handy stitch pattern section and a glossary of techniques.Trade ReviewGreat book! It's very well explained and really does treat you like a beginner. I love the simple instructions and that it has pictures which help show each stage. It has some really cute projects which would make lovely handmade presents for family and friends. It's also good that it has pictures for each project so you know what you're aiming for! * Caroline Bourne * I am completely new to Loom Knitting although I can knit the traditional way! I'm now inspired to go and purchase a loom - I never realised the looms were so versatile - I thought all that could be made were hats! Also amazed that you can do several different stitches. The pictures are clear and seem very easy to follow. My first project will be the beautiful cowl! * Shelagh Bird *another new hobby for me to learn the book is clear and easy to understand covers all the things you need to start plus patterns /projects * Lynne Hart *I have never tried this before but this is a fantastic book with clear and precise instructions * Denise Bonham *I've looked at the book, as a beginner, and can't believe how detailed it is. I am awaiting arrival of a loom, but am looking forward to trying at during the holidays. It looks like it will be getting a lot of use between me & the kids. A joy to read * Colleen Allison *Even though i can knit and crochet it is nice to be able to learn something a bit different , i find the book clear to understand with loads of patterns that i can't wait to get started on, it even tells you what tools you need very precise ,suitable for beginners and poeple like me that already have skills , great book * Julie Dawn *I received a free copy of this book from Search Press. The book itself is a good manageable size. I love the cover design and all the colour pictures within, they really help to make it feel uplifting and inspiring. The information within is set out in easy to read sections with lots of pictures to help. The topics covered are comprehensive and the patterns are for adults and children, and all really wearable items. I think this is a great book for anyone wanting to start out with their loom. * Cherry Edwards *I'd never heard of knitting on a loom before so I definitely needed a book for beginners. This fits the bill perfectly. It starts with advice on what equipment there is and how to decide what to buy which is really helpful. Advice on yarn is helpful and means the book would be suitable even if you're not experienced in normal knitting. The techniques are explained with clear pictures in a logical sequence. And of course you then want to crack on and make something so there is a good selection of patterns. Most of these are quite small items so look like they would be satisfying to complete. I find hats and socks quite tricky on normal knitting needles so am looking forward to getting myself a some equipment to try those. * Heather Haig *Loom knitting is a craft I haven't tried yet and have wanted to try making a sock with a loom, The book explains about all the different Looms there are,the stitches, and also felting. The instructions are so easy to follow specially as there are pictures as well. The patterns are all things I would try, usually I find that books have things in it I would never dream of making. Defintely recommend this book. * Kathy Downing *
