Transworld Publishers Ltd The Outsider
Book SynopsisFormer RAF pilot and investigative journalist, Frederick Forsyth defined the modern thriller when he wrote The Day of The Jackal, described by Lee Child as the book that broke the mould', with its lightning-paced storytelling, effortlessly cool reality and unique insider information. Since then he has written twelve novels which have been bestsellers around the world: The Odessa File, The Dogs of War, The Devil's Alternative, The Fourth Protocol, The Negotiator, The Deceiver, The Fist of God, Icon, Avenger, The Afghan, The Cobra and, most recently, The Kill List. He lives in Buckinghamshire, England.www.frederickforsyth.co.ukTrade ReviewForsyth insists that The Outsider is not an autobiography. So I will just say that this is one of the most exciting and enjoyable accounts of an author’s life, in vaguely chronological order and written by the author himself, that I have ever read. * The Sunday Times *The comparison with Bond is apt . . . it may well be the best book he has ever written. * Daily Mail *If there is one memoir to read this autumn, it's Frederick Forsyth's extraordinary life story, The Outsider, which reads like a James Bond novel. The author of The Day Of The Jackal tells his own story and it's clear where the inspiration for so many of his best-selling thrillers came from when you read about his own life, beginning as the RAF's youngest pilot at the age of 19 and carrying on through being captured by the Stasi and threatened by the IRA. * Irish Independent *Enjoyed Freddie Forsyth last night. Boy has he lived a full life! And a life so beyond anything most of us can imagine, full of coups, civil wars, spies, and most importantly, typewriters. Great stories. -- Simon Mayo * Radio 2 Drivetime blog *In this engaging level-headed memoir . . . he reminds me of Ian Fleming, a fellow Europhile (in the cultural rather than political sense_ who also honed his writing skills at Reuters. Fleming is more elegant, more playful; Forsyth has more balls. * Literary Review *There’s plenty of sex and subterfuge, with close shaves, hairy escapades and hints of involvement with the intelligence services . . . ultimately, The Outsider is as good a read as any of the thrillers. If you’re looking for thrills and spills, you’ll find them. * Country Life *

A deeply moving and passionate work of art, it's quite unlike anything I've ever read, and will forever be imprinted upon my heart. * ELIZABETH GILBERT, author of EAT PRAY LOVE *Jaouad is writing about a process, a back and forth. Transworld Publishers Ltd The Westies
Book SynopsisEven among the Mob, the Westies were feared. Out of a partnership between two sadistic thugs - James Coonan and Mickey Featherstone - the gang dominated the decaying slice of New York City''s West Side known as Hell''s Kitchen in the 1970s and ''80s. Excelling in extortion, numbers running, loansharking and drug-peddling, they became the most notorious gang in the history of organized crime. The then prosecutor Rudolf Giuliani called them ''the most savage organisation in the long history of New York street gangs''. Upping the ante on brutality and depravity, their speciality when it came to punishment and killings was dismemberment. Their reign lasted almost twenty - their end would come as their own violent natures got the best of them and precipitated a downfall as infamous as their rise. Hodder & Stoughton The Life Were Looking For
Book SynopsisFrom the author of The Tech-Wise Family''A fascinating and eye-opening book'' - Tom Holland, author of Dominion: The Making of the Western MindOur greatest need is to be recognised - to be seen, loved, and embedded in rich relationships with the people around us. But for the last century, we''ve displaced that need with the ease of technology. We''ve dreamed of power that doesn''t require relationship (what the premodern world called magic) and abundance that doesn''t require dependence (what Jesus called Mammon). Yet even before a pandemic disrupted that quest, we felt threatened and strangely out of place: lonely, anxious, bored amid endless options, oddly disconnected amid infinite connections. In The Life We''re Looking For, bestselling author and cultural critic Andy Crouch reveals how we traded lives of rich relationship for a world of impersonal power - and how each of us can fight back.Trade ReviewA fascinating and eye-opening book on the need to discover what might, perhaps, be called the Holy Ghost in the machine. -- Tom Holland, author of Dominion: The Making of the Western MindIt is time to coin the term "Crouchian" for writing that is profound, accessible and challenging, theologically rich and widely relevant. Only a handful can do it and Andy is the master. This book troubled and inspired me in equal measure. -- Elizabeth Oldfield, host of the Sacred podcastIf you harbour a suspicion that the latest technological advance may not be all good news or that the latest life-changing gadget may not be life-changing, at least not for the better, then this book is for you. While far from being a Luddite manifesto, it asks some big questions about what it means to be a person and how technology might serve that end rather that hinder it. More than that, it begins to sketch out a better way of being human together. Read it, then give it to a friend and talk it through - face-to-face. -- Tim Chester, author and senior faculty member of Crosslands TrainingThis is a timely and prophetic remedy for our lonely, isolated times. I cannot recommend it enough. -- Sheridan Voysey, presenter of Pause for Thought on BBC Radio 2In his book, Andy Crouch offers us a way through our technologically driven world that is both realistic and challenging. However, more than this, he gives us a compelling vision for a life lived to the full, one that hits directly at our hearts and ignites our deepest human desires. This book breaks the enchantment that technology has cast over us, propelling us to abundant human living. -- Dr Sara Schumancher, Lecturer at St Mellitus CollegeIf the genius of apocalyptic literature is to unveil concealed truths, then this book is apocalyptic. Andy Crouch exposes deep and uncomfortable realities about our world and our selves: how technology, money and convenience veil dynamics of slavery, addiction and abuse, and how aspects of modern society seduce us to pawn our personhood for superficial superpowers that diminish our humanity. This is crucial reading for everyone who wants to understand the devices and desires of our contemporary hearts. -- Christopher Watkins, Professor at Monash University, AustraliaWhimsical and sincere, perturbing and delightfully hopeful, The Life We're Looking For is a meditation on love, loneliness and human connection from one of the most insightful writers in his field. -- Alastair Gordon, artist and author of WHY ART MATTERSThis book, at once prophetic and wise, is just what we've been looking for. Andy is a trusted guide to make culture and places where life can flourish. But in the face of big-tech and its magical promises, we need his vision to form the kind of whole-life persons able to resist false charm and instead seek the peace of the city. -- Dr Dave Benson, Director of Culture and Discipleship at The London Institute for Contemporary Christianity (LICC)In this acutely insightful exploration of our relationship with technology and with one another, Andy Crouch gives us a direct line back to the scriptures that will have you questioning the endless scrolling that consumes so many of our waking hours. -- James Poulter, CEO of Vixex LabsProfound, captivating and wise. Andy Crouch combines penetrating and astute insights into our all-pervasive technological culture, with fresh retelling of the revolutionary communities that the early Christian church established. An inspiring and hopeful read for those who are feeling weighed down by social polarisation and post-pandemic gloom. -- John Wyatt, Emeritus Professor of Neonatal Paediatrics, Ethics and Perinatology, UCLThis elegantly written book should start a conversation and I trust lead to a shift in our thinking and practice * Inspire Magazine *thought provoking...he deftly describes how the advances of technology have led to a loss of the resource of rich relationships... but also demonstrates how relationships can be reclaimed... * Life and Work Magazine *

It is about celebrating the sense of connection and discovery that is possible in all our travels.Trade Review[THE NATURAL EXPLORER] is an essential part of any outdoor/nature-writing library and it's full of wonderful examples of how to read, understand and connect with the landscape. * Country Walking *Using poems, diary entries and letters from nature lovers of ancient Rome to the present day, Gooley has written the perfect book to take out walking - and it would be a crime not to find the time to see, and smell, the roses. * Daily Mail *Discover a whole new world... a journey through the intricate, detailed and often-missed sides of a walk. * Wanderlust *THE NATURAL EXPLORER take us on a multi-sensory, literary journey intent on heightening awareness of our surroundings. An ambitious combination of Gooley's own insights and those of countless other writers, explorer and philosophers, this is serious armchair adventuring. * Prospect Magazine *Gooley returns with a highly readable and engaging work devoted to the temporarily mislaid art of exploration... it's an inspiring account but also a turning point - perhaps a classic in years to come - because its simple aim is to help you recognise what your senses are telling you. It's also an object lesson in how to frame a call to action, because this is a book you can't put down until you absolutely have to get out and start seeing the world as you should. And that's when the adventure really begins... * Countryfile *The Natural Explorer by Tristan Gooley is a call to enrich our travel experiences through connecting with nature - essentially a greater awareness of our surroundings... Chapters include the sky, the earth and time - and as someone who can get around the Tate in about half an hour, I paid particular attention here. * Evening Standard *A charming and intelligent guide to exploring the local landscape. * Financial Times *Celebrated explorer Tristan Gooley gives a fascinating insight into how to connect with nature and heighten the enjoyment of outdoor discoveries, be they grandiose or modest...Are you a traveller or an explorer? This account divorces the two and aims to really open our eyes... * Press Association *The book's key chapter, though, is the first one. Entitled "The Senses", it aims to switch on our powers of perception and, with its thought-provoking discussion of the way we sometimes take touch, taste, smell, hearing and even sight for for granted, it succeeds brilliantly. Did you know, for example, that if you look at a landscape from right to left, rather than from left to right, you will become more observant? * The Scotsman *... Tristan Gooley knows a thing or two about adventure... this is in part a history of exploration, but also a practical guide. * Lonely Planet Magazine *The author's experience is to encourage travellers to be inquisitive about where they are in all its aspects, an intention which I happily endorse. Curiosity is an invaluable trait... this book is particularly relevant to walkers. Walking is the right speed to see, contemplate and learn about landscapes. This book will help you do so. * The Great Outdoors *Gooley shows us how to notice sights, sounds and smells we might have been unaware of, supplementing his own insights with those of travellers, explorers and thinkers of the past. * The Herald *Just as enjoyable for armchair explorers. * Woman's Weekly *

John Murray Press Blackout
Book SynopsisTHE NEW YORK TIMES BESTELLER. A raw, honest, vivid memoir of one woman's struggle with addiction and recovery, for fans of Bryony Gordon, Cheryl Strayed and Daisy Buchanan.Trade ReviewAmerican journalist Sarah Hepola's extraordinary book describes her years of drinking... Writing with warmth and wit she explores reasons for her alcoholism * Independent *Simply extraordinary. Ms. Hepola's electric prose marks her as a flamingo among this genre's geese... As a form, addiction memoirs are permanently interesting because they're an excuse to crack open a life. Ms. Hepola's book moves to a top shelf in this arena... I'm glad, for herself and for us, that Ms. Hepola found A.A. and other varieties of help. "I had wanted alcohol to make me fearless," she writes. "But by the time I'd reached my mid-30s, I was scared all the time." It's a win-win. She got a better life. We have this book * New York Times *To say Blackout is a brutally honest memoir would be a bit of an understatement... It's a poignant and revealing look into the mind of an alcoholic that lets the reader experience all of the raw emotions the author feels during her struggles. It's a tale of friendships and how they evolve over the years... Blackout is one of the best memoirs I've read. Like Kristen Johnston's GUTS: The Endless Follies and Tiny Triumphs of a Giant Disaster, it treats a sensitive subject with unbridled honesty and humour. Yes, Blackout is a touching and, at times, heart-breaking story. It will likely make you cry. But it will also make you laugh out loud... a tour de force... Read this book. You won't be disappointed -- Dean Dauphinais * Huffington Post *This blew me away... Hepola is astonishingly and moving clear-sighted and honest about her drinking. She's also funny, and dry, and ever so clever * Bookseller (January 2016 preview) *Here's What People In Media Are Excited About In 2015... Sarah Hepola's Blackout, a dark, funny, honest-to-the-bone account of getting sober. * Buzzfeed *a memoir of her alcoholism but also an empathetic dissection of addiction and American drinking culture, and the blurry lines between the two. Hepola conveys both the horror in the mysteries left after a night smudged dark by drinking, and the draw of overdrinking that kept her carving out her memory with alcohol. * Atlantic *A memoir that's good and true is a work of art that stands the literary test of time and also serves a purpose in the present. It mines intimate, personal experiences to raise bigger questions, tell a bigger story, help readers understand themselves, their circumstances, their world. Like the best sermon, the best memoir comforts the disturbed and disturbs the comfortable. Blackout, the debut memoir by Salon editor Sarah Hepola, is one such memoir. It's as lyrically written as a literary novel, as tightly wound as a thriller, as well-researched as a work of investigative journalism, and as impossible to put down as, well, a cold beer on a hot day. This book is a must-read redemption for everyone who has ever "craved something good for me" - which is to say, everyone. * Chicago Tribune *What's important about this book is that it treats alcohol as a symptom of the bigger issues we women deal with... Sarah writes it all with - dare I say? - sassiness and spunk. She's got a strong sense of where she came from, what she came through and where she's going - now that alcohol isn't along for the ride. I admire Sarah's honesty, I admire her anything-but-stereotypical stories and I admire her inventive, funny writing. But mostly, I admire Sarah herself. What she has accomplished - at such a young age - in regard to stepping up on behalf of her own well being. And what she has accomplished with the publication of this book - which has the potential to save the lives of so many other talented, spirited young women. Listen to Sarah Hepola. She's living proof of how fascinating a sober life can be. -- Sharon Grigsby * Dallas Morning News - Editorial Opinion Blog *a fucking stellar book... Here's what Blackout is about: body image, sexual consent while being an alcoholic, online dating as a late 30-something, dating while recently sober, the challenge of experiencing your first sober romantic kiss and sexual encounter as a 30-something, AA, feminism, friendship through alcohol and sobriety, the relationship between alcohol and writing, and more... The writing is incredibly smart and maintains a level of intensity you don't often find in long-form memoirs... Blackout is an enthralling interrogation of a life. Even the most banal moments are beautiful, elevated, and resonate across the human experience. * The Rumpus *Blackout is devoid of preachy admonitions. Instead, Hepola has woven together a compendium of hard facts (like that fragmentary blackouts start at a blood alcohol level of 0.2), personal reflections, and cultural implications; the result is a startlingly personal, in-depth exploration of a phenomenon that's still not completely understood, neither by the scientific world nor, certainly, by victims of recurrent alcohol-induced blackouts * Elle US *You don't need to be a reformed problem drinker to appreciate Hepola's gripping memoir about the years she lost yoo alcohol - and the self she rediscovered once she quit. * People *excellent * The Fix *The most anticipated pop cultural events of 2015... Hepola's dark, wise and often terrifically funny insights into her own toughest experiences are unfailingly riveting, and there's no doubt in our minds that her debut memoir, coming in June, will be a sensation * Salon *refreshingly honest, self-deprecating, and totally unselfish memoir... This is a must-read for recovering addicts; for women susceptible to the glamour of being modern and independent; for anyone who has had a difficult past, and who wants to heal, but who wants mostly to laugh at themselves. Basically, we should all be reading Blackout this summer (and wishing the incredibly smart and candid Hepola was our BFF) * Bustle (13 Of June 2015's Best Books That Are The Perfect Summer Escape) *Razor-sharp... modern, raw, and painfully real-and even hilarious... Hepola moves beyond the analysis of her addiction, making this the story of every woman's fight to be seen for who she really is. * Kirkus - Starred review *The best books we can't wait to read in 2015... Hepola has written some great essays about her drinking years. Now she's expanded them into a book * Chicago Reader *Sarah Hepola's Blackout is the best kind of memoir: fiercely funny, full of hard-won wisdom, marked by a writer with phenomenal gifts of observation and insight. The book engages universal questions -- Where do I belong? What fulfills me? -- that will engage any reader. * Emily Rapp, author of THE STILL POINT OF THE TURNING WORLD *The story of a rising star's journey of self-destruction and realization, Blackout is gripping, alternately excruciating and funny, scary and hopeful, and beautifully written. I loved it. * Anne Lamott, author of SMALL VICTORIES *This is a book about welcoming yourself back from a long absence. It's a memoir, but its author is not its main character; she is a new person sprung from the ashes of another one whose alcoholic self-erasure she describes with painful honesty and charming humor. A book about freedom that will help set others free as well * Walter Kirn, author of UP IN THE AIR *Sarah Hepola is my favorite kind of memoirist. She is a reporter with a poet's instincts, an anthropologist of her own soul. Blackout is a book about drinking and eventual sobriety, but it's also an exploration of the fleeting nature of the comfort we all constantly seek - comfort with the self, with others, with the whole maddening, confusing, exhilarating world. What's more, Hepola's ability to bring such precise and evocative life to the blank spaces that were her drinking blackouts is downright stunning in places. I admire this book tremendously. * Meghan Daum, author of THE UNSPEAKABLE: AND OTHER SUBJECTS OF DISCUSSION *Excellent * Gretchen Rubin, bestselling author of BETTER THAN BEFORE *Hepola's account of her experience with alcohol gives a fresh edge to what is essentially a book on the influence booze has on the most precious moments of our lives. Never does she pretend her days of drinking were not as enjoyable as they were painful - both physically and mentally. There is a self-awareness to her writing that hits the right notes without feeling didactic. This is most poignant when Hepola describes how she dealt with the extreme feelings of vulnerability and exposure that came with finally giving up alcohol. Or the moments where she recounts the pressure her alcoholism put on her closest friends. Being an alcoholic, Hepola explains, is the easy part. Sobriety, that's where the challenge begins. Hepola makes for an endearing and entertaining authorand Blackout is an honest account of letting go of (and at times enjoying) alcohol. One that will surely endear and entertain the reader * We Love This Book *

Book SynopsisAs seen on the BBC documentary, Inside Our Autistic Minds, with Chris PackhamIf you've recently been diagnosed with ASD, or think you might be, or you are close to someone with ASD, one of the things you will like most about this book is the way in which it challenges the idea of autism as a 'disorder' or 'impairment'.Instead, Dr Luke Beardon will help you to reframe what you feel, and challenge what you know, about being on the spectrum. Profile Books Ltd In Search Of Excellence: Lessons from America's
Book SynopsisIn Search of Excellence has long been a must-have for the boardroom, business school and bedside table, and continues to influence the thinking of leaders and managers across the globe today. Based on a study of forty-three of America's best-run companies from a range of sectors - consumer goods, technology, services - the book identifies eight common 'attributes of excellence' that made these organisations successful. Though many of the profiled companies have since lost their edge (or disappeared completely), these eight management principles, each highlighted in a chapter in the book, have shown themselves to be timeless. These simple business truths, so eloquently encapsulated by Peters and Waterman, are proof that the fundamentals of management - a focus on people, customers and value, entrepreneurship and excellence - ring as true today as they ever did. In Search of Excellence is a seminal business book, worthy of a place on the bookshelves of anyone who wants to understand how effective management works in practice.Trade ReviewRequired reading * International Management Magazine *A landmark book, without question the most important and useful book on what makes organisations effective, ever written * Warren Buffet *One of those rare books on management that is both consistently thought-provoking and fun to read * Wall Street Journal *

Book Synopsis'Ought to become a classic. Probably we don’t deserve Meades, a man who apparently has never composed a dull paragraph' Steven Poole, Guardian'There are more gems in this wonderful book than I could cram into a dozen of these columns' Simon Heffer, Daily Telegraph'Such a useful and important critic . . . He is very much on the reader’s side, bringing his full wit to bear on every single thing he writes' Nicholas Lezard, SpectatorThis landmark publication collects three decades of writing from one of the most original, provocative and consistently entertaining voices of our time. Anyone who cares about language and culture should have this book in their life.Thirty years ago, Jonathan Meades published a volume of reportorial journalism, essays, criticism, squibs and fictions called Peter Knows What Dick Likes. The critic James Wood was moved to write: ‘When journalism is like this, journalism and literature become one.’Pedro and Ricky Come Again is every bit as rich and catholic as its predecessor. It is bigger, darker, funnier and just as impervious to taste and manners. It bristles with wit and pin-sharp eloquence, whether Meades is contemplating northernness in a German forest or hymning the virtues of slang. From the indefensibility of nationalism and the ubiquitous abuse of the word ‘iconic’, to John Lennon’s shopping lists and the wine they call Black Tower, the work assembled here demonstrates Meades's unparalleled range and erudition, with pieces on cities, artists, sex, England, France, concrete, faith, politics, food, history and much, much more.Trade Review 'Ought to become a classic. Greenhill Books Lady Death: The Memoirs of Stalin's Sniper
Book SynopsisThe wartime memoir of Lyudmila Pavlichenko is a remarkable document: the publication of an English language edition is a significant coup. Pavlichenko was World War II's best-scoring sniper and had a varied wartime career that included trips to England and America. In June 1941, when Hitler launched Operation Barbarossa, she left her university studies, ignored the offer of a position as a nurse, to become one of Soviet Russia's 2000 female snipers. Less than a year later she had 309 recorded kills, including 29 enemy sniper kills. She was withdrawn from active duty after being injured: she was also regarded as a key heroic figure for the war effort. She spoke at rallies in Canada and the US and the folk singer Woody Guthrie wrote a song, 'Killed By A Gun' about her exploits. Her US trip included a tour of the White House with FDR. In November 1942 she visited Coventry and accepted donations of 4,516 from Coventry workers to pay for three X-ray units for the Red Army. She also visited a Birmingham factory as part of her fundraising tour. She never returned to combat but trained other snipers. After the war, she finished her education at Kiev University and began a career as a historian. She died on October 10, 1974 at age 58, and was buried in Moscow's Novodevichye Cemetery.

Book SynopsisRead the Sunday Times bestseller that reveals the Earth’s awesome impact on the shape of human civilisations.‘Stands comparison with Sapiens… Thrilling’ Sunday Times Human evolution in East Africa was driven by geological forces. Ancient Greece developed democracy because of its mountainous terrain. Voting behaviour in the United States today follows the bed of an ancient sea. Professor Lewis Dartnell takes us on an astonishing journey into our planet’s past to tell the ultimate origin story. Vintage Publishing Youngman: Selected Diaries of Lou Sullivan
Book SynopsisA unique first-hand account of a historical gay trans man's whole life, which reads like a celebratory coming-of-age novel. Lou kept candid diaries from the age of 10. Through these extracts, we hear Lou's life in his own words: from 'playing boys' in his childhood in Wisconsin, to cruising San Francisco's gay bars for handsome 'youngmen'; from first hearing about gender non-conforming communities, to becoming a vital part of them as an activist, author, and archivist. Lou navigated his identity with few role models and was perhaps the first publicly gay transgender man. Successfully campaigning to remove heterosexuality from the medical requirements for gender affirming surgery, Lou was pivotal in our modern understanding of gender and sexuality as distinct identities. After he was diagnosed with HIV in 1986, he remarked that he had been told by clinics that 'it was impossible for me to live as a gay man, but it looks like I'm gonna die like one.' This selection shows Lou's joyous love of life, men, and sex. * LAMBDA LITERARY AWARD WINNER * * PUBLISHING TRIANGLE FINALIST * WITH AN INTRODUCTION BY SUSAN STRYKER 'Chatty and tender, casually poetic and voraciously sexual-Sullivan workshopped his identity and his relationships, committing to the page an interior monologue of self-discovery that paralleled the gay-liberation movement, the burgeoning transgender-rights movement, and the aids crisis...
