Book SynopsisSORAYAMA: A Grandmaster of technical and erotic phantasy without limits. The Japanese artist Sorayama lives in Tokyo. He is a global phenomenon and has the reputation of being an enfant terrible. His art is being shown at the Museum of Modern Art, New York, the Smithsonian Institute of Technology Museum. Washington DC, the World Erotic Art Museum, Miami and numerous exhibitions around the world. At last there is a new and considerably expanded edition of his COMPLETE MASTERWORKS in enhanced print quality and at a very reasonable price. This thick tome is a reference catalogue to Sorayamas rich work including a lot of new illustrations. Printed in high-density and best possible quality his MASTERWORKS sparkle with extraordinary talent, wondrous imagination and impeccable skill. Enjoy! - Sorayamas surreal and futuristic DADAIST images not only produce incredible sensations in the observer, but also blend into a unique homage to life. With joyful freedom he combines and morphs fear with happiness, pain with pleasure, repulsion with attraction, past with future, flesh with metal, the organic with ethereal. Stronger than any constraint, the energy of life and love that goes through his work is what I admire most in his amazingly perfect technique. Seine Werke finden sich u.a. im Museum of Modern Art, New York, Smithsonian Institute of Technology Museum. Peter W. Czernich (Marquis)

Book Synopsis''It would be hard to imagine a more thoughtful, intelligent and companionable person to go to sea with than Paul Heiney.'' Bill Bryson''High comedy on the high seas. Informative and warm and freezing. It''s quite a combination.'' Griff Rhys JonesThe writer and broadcaster Paul Heiney set sail from the east coast of England bound for Iceland, propelled by a desire to breathe the cool, clear air of the high latitudes, and to follow in the wake of generations of sailors who have made this often treacherous journey since the 13th century. In almost every harbour he tripped over maritime history and anecdote, and came face to face with his own past as he sailed north along his childhood coastline of east Yorkshire towards the Arctic Circle. But there was one major thing missing from this voyage - the sight of puffins. They are remarkable birds, uplifting as a ray of sunshine after a storm. To see them and share their waters was also part of Heiney's ambition. Imagine then his Trade ReviewIt would be hard to imagine a more thoughtful, intelligent and companionable person to go to sea with than Paul Heiney. -- Bill BrysonHigh comedy on the high seas. Informative and warm and freezing. It's quite a combination. -- Griff Rhys JonesFunny and perceptive * Country Life *An exciting read... Heiney’s chatty, ‘warts and all’ narrative style lends especial charm to the tale, giving you the feeling that he is retelling his story over a pint in front of a log fire. -- David Schuster * On: Yorkshire Magazine *A consummate storyteller... being at sea and overcoming the challenges of time, tide and stormy weather make this an entertaining and informative read. * Towpath Talk *A captivating and humorous travel narrative, Farewell Mr Puffin is rich with the natural, social and maritime history of many ports of call, and the lives of folks inhabiting these remote places. * Windcheck Magazine *This book, infused with humour, anecdotes and stacks of maritime history, is a travel writer’s love letter to one of the world’s most popular seabirds together with observations of the simplest pleasures to be found at sea. * Coast Magazine *A tonic for the sailing reader’s soul: part adventure, part travelogue, part character study and all heart. Heiney wraps it all up in the perfect package. * Sailing Magazine *A very enjoyable read...I would very highly recommend it. * Shipping Magazine *The maritime counterpart to Bill Bryson: by turns evocative, entertaining and though-provoking. * Practical Boat Owner *A good-humoured portrait of life on the ocean waves. * Bury and West Suffolk Magazine *This ode to life at sea by writer and broadcaster Paul Heiney will have you dreaming of Iceland's storied shores from which he set sail while searching for the iconic puffins. Though Heiney fails to see his beloved birds, he finds meaning as he reflects on his travels, peppered throughout with maritime history and humor. * Newsweek *Humorous and thoughtful, Paul skilfully tells stories of encounters with people and places, painting a vivid picture of his journey. In Farewell Mr Puffin he weaves together the history of the lands with a story of altered biodiversity, and paints a picture of an ever challenging and changing landscape and adaptable peoples. * Flying Fish *An entertaining, well-written and very readable book for all sailors. -- Christine Holroyd * Cruising Association *Paul’s joy of the sea, wildlife and sailing knowledge shine through in this delightful trip around northern waters. * Lifeboat Magazine *The book contains excellent advice and humorous observations for those sailing to Iceland: finding protected anchorages, weather forecasts, clearing in, staying warm, and the cost of basic supplies. * Cruising World *

Book SynopsisBill Beckley is an American conceptual artist and one of the first artists to use photography as a means of artistic expression. In the early 1970s he was part of a loose-knit group of conceptual artists that used images and fictional texts in a form that came to be known as Narrative Art. I was basically writing a story and taking pictures at the same time. The text evolved with the photos, he says. In the 1980s he experimented with various materials and his work became more sculptural and pictorial. By the end of the decade, he had found a way to integrate these materials with photography, and this integration became a very important aspect of all his works. In 2019 he produced the Neapolitan Holidays series, inspired by cards dated between 1915 and 1972, sent to or from Naples, Italy. The artist responded to the text on the postcard with an email or a text message an old postcard receiving a response, sometimes even after a hundred years.

    15 in stock

Book Synopsis'A moving microhistory of working-class girlhood' BBC History MagazineIt is 1937 in a northern mill-town and a class of twelve- and thirteen-year-old girls are writing about their lives, their world, and the things that matter to them. They tell of cobbled streets and crowded homes; the Coronation festivities and holidays to Blackpool; laughter and fun alongside poverty and hardship. They are destined for the cotton mill but they dream of being film stars. Class of '37 uses the writing of these young girls, as collected by the research organisation Mass Observation, to rediscover this lost world, transporting readers back in time to a smoky industrial town in an era before the introduction of a Welfare State, where once again the clouds of war were beginning to gather. Woven within this rich, authentic history are the twists and turns of the girls' lives from childhood to beyond, from their happiest times to the most heart-breaking of their sorrows. A compelling social history, this intimate reconstruction of working-class life in 1930s Britain is a haunting and emotional account of a bygone age.

Book SynopsisAn invigorating journey through Britain's prehistoric landscape, and an insight into the lives of its inhabitants. 'Highly compelling' Spectator, Books of the Year 'An evocative foray into the prehistoric past' BBC Countryfile Magazine 'Vividly relating what life was like in pre-Roman Britain' Choice Magazine 'Makes life in Britain BC often sound rather more appealing than the frenetic and anxious 21st century!' Daily Mail In Scenes from Prehistoric Life, the distinguished archaeologist Francis Pryor paints a vivid picture of British and Irish prehistory, from the Old Stone Age (about one million years ago) to the arrival of the Romans in AD 43, in a sequence of fifteen profiles of ancient landscapes. Whether writing about the early human family who trod the estuarine muds of Happisburgh in Norfolk c.900,000 BC, the craftsmen who built a wooden trackway in the Somerset Levels early in the fourth millennium BC, or the Iron Age denizens of Britain's first towns, Pryor uses excavations and surveys to uncover the daily routines of our ancient ancestors. By revealing how our prehistoric forebears coped with both simple practical problems and more existential challenges, Francis Pryor offers remarkable insights into the long and unrecorded centuries of our early history, and a convincing, well-attested and movingly human portrait of prehistoric life as it was really lived.Trade ReviewDecades worth of communicating archaeology on TV and a recent foray into crime fiction writing help make this book a highly compelling read * Spectator *An evocative foray into the prehistoric past... Pryor recreates [the prehistoric world] with an effortless narrative style' * BBC Countryfile Magazine *Brings almost impossibly distant times into brilliant focus * Eastern Daily Press Norfolk *Pryor's colourful book makes life in Britain BC often sound rather more appealing than the frenetic and anxious 21st century! * Daily Mail *Vividly relating what life was like in pre-Roman Britain * Choice Magazine *Our prehistoric cousins lie on the other side of a vast expanse of time... Francis Pryor bridges that gap, showing how excavation and analysis can bring their stories to life. Of course, the gap between us and them is matched by the prehistoric era's epic sweep, and Pryor charts the changes witnessed across that time' * BBC History Magazine *Francis Pryor is always good value... He cherrypicks the most interesting recent discoveries about Britain's past before the Romans' * Spectator, Books of the Year *Archaeologists, enthusiasts, and novices alike can turn the page and enter scenes from prehistory, learning what it meant to live in and experience the past * The Past *Such personal insights, alongside the fascinating and wonderfully detailed archaeological narrative, make this book an essential – and hugely enjoyable – read for any enthusiast of British prehistory with an interest in how and why our landscape appears as it does today * Archaeology Worldwide *

In this definitive account of their rise and fall, Mary Hollingsworth argues that the idea that the Medici were wise rulers and enlightened fathers of the Renaissance is a fiction. In truth, she says, the Medici were as devious and immoral as the Borgias – tyrants loathed in the city they illegally made their own and which they beggared in their lust for power.Trade ReviewThis forensic study of the Renaissance banking dynasty conjures up a world of art, literature, philosophy – and brutality * Telegraph, Book of the Year *Likely to become the standard work of reference on the members of the family that dominated Florence * TLS *A lucid and beautifully illustrated family history * The Times, Book of the Week *A beautifully illustrated and scholarly survey of five centuries of the Medici family * Literary Review *A vital acquisition for anyone who studies the Renaissance and seeks the true role of the Medici in the history of Florence * Kirkus *An excellent study of the Medici... • The Pocket Guide to Neurodiversity

Jessica Kingsley Publishers The Pocket Guide to Neurodiversity

    7 in stock

Book SynopsisAt least one in seven people are thought to be neurodivergent. So what exactly is neurodiversity? What does 'executive functioning' mean? What are 'spiky profiles'?In this simple guide, expert speaker and trainer Daniel Aherne provides a clear introduction to neurodiversity and the four most common neurodivergent identities of autism, ADHD, dyslexia and dyspraxia. Using an analogy of a cactus needing a desert to grow in, he emphasises the importance of getting the environment right for neurodivergent people, rather than expecting them to adapt to the neurotypical world. Daniel, who himself has ADHD, also explains how neurodivergent people often have great strengths alongside areas of difficulty, and writes about the interplay between diagnoses, as well as unpacking tricky concepts such as working memory, sensory processing, communication differences and more.Busting common misconceptions and setting out simple tips and guidance for supporting the neurodivergent people around you, whether among your family, friends or at your school, college or workplace - or if you yourself are ND and want to improve the understanding of others - this essential guide will help us all celebrate neurodiversity and foster more inclusive communities.Trade ReviewThis is a great introduction to the complex world of neurodiversity. Every classroom should have a copy, for both educators to learn the basics from, and young people to begin understand themselves or others. The moments for reflection are going to be crucial for many individuals to think about changing their lives and those of others. -- Charli ClementA gripping guide to neurodiversity - Daniel clearly explains ADHD, autism, dyslexia and dyspraxia and provides a fresh, lively and personal account of human differences. A must-read for employers and educators with practical suggestions provided through a lived experience perspective. A true celebration of the power of thinking differently. -- Dr Lisa Harkry (CPsychol, FHEA)I wish this 'guide to Neurodiversity' was available when I started to navigate and appreciate how my son experienced 'the world differently to other people'. Daniel simply and concisely highlights key considerations that everyone should have an awareness of that can have a positive impact and be more neuroinclusive. -- Georgie Siddall, Parent, Carer and Facilitator for Families in Focus Early Years Parent NetworkIn our society, many stigmas and stereotypes still exist around neurodivergent people. This is due to a lack of awareness, understanding and societal expectations. With his fantastic and much needed work, Daniel creates not only awareness about the often unspoken, but he also challenges us in our thinking and encourages us to focus on the strengths and abilities of people that are neurodiverse. Featuring successful people that are neurodivergent gives hope and confidence to those that have never seen themselves in such positions and to the families that often feel they do not fit in the society. This book should be a must read for everyone - from teachers, families, leaders to any neurodivergent people that struggle with understanding why they seem to be different. The book gives a great understanding of different types and helpful guidance. At the end, we are all different and a more neurodivergent environment also helps to create an environment in which we all can thrive. -- Felizitas Lichtenberg, Global Head of Diversity & Inclusion at SumUpThis essential handbook works well for managers across all sectors. Clear and concise, it makes lively reading for managers and co-workers alike and offers an excellent go-to guide for better workplaces. Understanding neurodiversity is your first step in managing staff to improve their work life and yours, increasing team achievements and your organisation's performance targets. -- Professor Lynn Martin, Anglia Ruskin University, CambridgeDaniel Aherne's 'Pocket Guide to Neurodiversity' takes a thoughtful and insightful approach to guiding the reader into the rewarding opportunities available to employers in embracing the richness of neurodivergent people within their organisation. Daniel is an expert at gently guiding us, with kind curiosity, into the world of people with Autism, ADHD, Dyslexia and Dyspraxia. He provides moments for deeper reflection and consideration as to how we can all play a part in enjoying workplaces that benefit from their talents and are respectful of their needs. With his ability to help us challenge our misconceptions, Daniel provides us with a multitude of ideas to make the workplace more inclusive for neurodivergent colleagues. As an HR professional and a father to a wonderful autistic son, I wholly recommend this book as a must-read. -- Brad Taylor, Founder of Strategically PeopleFilled with personality, humour and humanity, Daniel Aherne's The Pocket Guide to Neurodiversity smashes stereotypes and assumptions while gently prompting neurotypical people to reconsider their prejudices. Aherne's light voice makes a complex topic accessible, and this book will make the workplace of those who read it more accessible in turn. Bloomsbury Publishing PLC The South West Coast Path: 1,000 Mini Adventures

    5 in stock

Book SynopsisOften featuring in lists of the world’s best walks, the South West Coast Path is 630 miles long, and passes through two World Heritage Sites. This guide to the path is a modern take on the traditional (turn right at the stile, and follow the footpath to the bridge) guidebook: instead of telling readers where to go step by step, Stephen gives fantastic ideas for what to do as they travel along the path. There are so many amazing adventures and places to visit (some ‘secret’ and some well known) and this guide highlights 1,000 of them, all situated along the route. After an Introduction giving a history of the path and the stories of the people who made it (Why is this path the most popular National Trail? Why is it so closely associated with tales of King Arthur? When is the best time to visit?) the bulk of the book focuses on all the amazing things you can do along the path itself. It is divided into regions, with over 70 adventures/highlights per region: West Somerset, North Devon, Torridge, North Cornwall, South Cornwall, South Hams, Torbay, Teignbridge, East Devon, West Dorset, Weymouth and Portland, Purbeck and Poole. Each region is introduced with a ‘Best For’ section, with the ten best places for secret swims, tidal woods, fossils etc. It then highlights where to go, each place accompanied by basic directions, a short description and postcode/map coordinates. Book SynopsisFifteen-year-old Noemi has no choice but to leave school and work in the house of the wealthy De Grandbourg family. Just across the road from the slums where she grew up, she encounters a world that is starkly different from her own – yet one which would have been all too familiar to her ancestors. Bewitched by a pair of green eyes and haunted by echoes, her life begins to mirror those of girls who have gone before her. Within Noemi’s lament is also the herstory of Mauritius; the story of women who have resisted arrest, of teachers who care for their poorest pupils and encourage them to challenge traditional narratives, of a flawed Paradise undergoing slow but unstoppable change. In Riambel, Priya Hein invites us to protest, to rail against longstanding structures of class and ethnicity. She shows us a world of natural enchantment contrasted with violence and the abuse of power. This seemingly simple tale of servitude, seduction and abandonment blisters with a fierce sense of injustice.Trade Review‘Not only am I finding the book really fascinating but I’m getting through it really quickly as I’m compelled to turn the pages!’ https://www.instagram.com/p/ChpjzZVoD0Y/?hl=en ‘4 stars’ https://www.instagram.com/p/Ch7tYSoLqSr/?hl=en -- @zukythebookbum * Instagram *‘I absolutely flew through it. We all have been deeply influenced by the epic saga of Star Wars and The Mandalorian. Every time the screen goes black, the music fades in, and you see these words―“A Long Time Ago, In A Galaxy Far, Far Away”―nostalgia fills the room. Ken Napzok, expert on all things Star Wars, counts down each one of those special moments that makes this series not just the best movies of all time, but the greatest saga ever told.Become a scholar of Star Wars. What began as one movie about good people, evil oppressors, and the Jedis that stood between them has exploded into a franchise from the original to The Mandalorian. This book gives you a re-introduction to meeting Princess Leia, Luke, and the very misunderstood Darth Vader. The perfect Star Wars gift. Spread the love to old and new fans. Countless numbers of us have been inspired by these epic tales. We all have a favorite moment that hooked us like the first time we saw the crackle of Luke Skywalker’s lightsaber, the first shots of the ragtag Rebels running from the monstrous Galactic Empire, or the Young Anakin winning the podrace in the Boonta Eve Classic race in 32 BBY.Why We Love Star Wars: The Great Moments That Built A Galaxy Far, Far Away is the best Star Wars gift for the film buff who has read The Art of Star Wars, Star Wars Year By Year, or The Star Wars Archives. Trade Review"Even though this book isn't about the show, Get a Life, I still learned a lot about Star Trek. Plus, Ken has dirt on me so I felt this quote might appease him" - Nathan Hamill, Artist, Teek enthusiast, star of The Phantom Menace and The Last Jedi. Why We Love Star Wars is THE book for the Star Wars fan… the new fan, the young fan, the old fan, even the fans who have yet to discover the magic. Ken Napzok reminds you, again, of the magic of Star Wars discovered as a kid and later, put into practice as an adult. Its dissection of themes, its playful ability to expand on what you already know, and its capableness to teach you even more proves this is the quintessential book on Star Wars. It also reinforces one truth: Star Wars is for everyone. - Mark Reilly, writer/ producer/ host of The Reilly Roundtable.“Hosting the Jedi Alliance podcast with Ken Napzok for 30 glorious episodes forged some of my happiest Star Wars memories. He was the master to my padawan, the light to my saber, the hand wave to my “you don’t want to buy any death sticks.” Ken was born to write this book and to shine a tractor beam of light on his limitless love for the franchise.” - Maude Garrett, host/ founder GeekBomb and Whut fashion. “We write about what we know about. Ken knows Star Wars. His knowledge on the franchise is second to none. Why We Love Star Wars is an exceptionally fun read returning us to the fist memories and relationships we made with the film, while preparing us to embrace what will surely be years of imaginative bliss in a galaxy far, far away.” - Frankie Kazarian, Professional wrestler, All Elite Wrestling (AEW)"Why We Love Star Wars” will transport you right back to the bliss of watching Star Wars for the first time. It’s a reminder of the impact this fantastical world can have on any race, culture, or personal experience. It’ll make you fall in love with Star Wars all over again! - Andres Cabrera, Producer/Host The Meaning Of podcast“The Force is “an energy field created by all living things. It surrounds us and penetrates us; it binds the galaxy together.” So is the power of Star Wars. Ken Napzok captures the essence of that power from Star Wars with every word. Ken binds us to our childhood, our feelings, and memories caused from the galaxy far far away with every word he writes. The Force is strong with Ken Napzok.” - the “Greek God” Dimitrios Papadon, Pro Wrestler “Ken Napzok is one of my favorite people to geek out about Star Wars with. Being a part of Jedi Council with him always ranks super high in this geek girl’s highlights list. I am so happy that now everyone can have Ken’s Star Wars wisdom in a collected intergalactically awesome book.” - Tiffany “Smithlord” Smith, actress/ host“Because of Ken Napzok and this book, we can sound like we know what we’re talking about on our Star Wars talk show.” - Stephen Ellis and Alex Backes, Black Series Rebels “Reading this book I discovered that Ken not only has the beard of Obi-Wan Kenobi but also the storytelling flair of C-3PO, and he had me hanging on his every word like an Ewok. This is the Star Wars book I’ve been looking for.” - Jamie Stangroom, director - The Empire Strikes Door."Ken Napzok is the ideal Star Wars fan. He understands the universe, characters, and themes, and knows how to express them in entertaining and engaging ways. If anyone should be writing about why we love Star Wars, it's Ken." - Alex Damon, creator of Star Wars Explained “Ken Napzok, one of the leading thinkers in the Star Wars community, expertly reminds us all why we all fell in love with this storied franchise in the first place. In this ofttimes divisive moment of fandom, Why We Love Star Wars is an essential manifesto that aims to unite us, to bind us together by celebrating the moments that lead us into the Galaxy Far Far Away in the first place.” - Van William, Singer/ Songwriter“With his deep well of knowledge and heartfelt respect for the fandom, I can think of no one more qualified than Ken Napzok to connect readers to the love of Star Wars. If for no other reason, the fact that Ken has the ability, raw power and sheer force of will to beat Sam Witwer in a Star Wars trivia contest simply terrifies me.” — Jennifer Muro, Television writer, Star Wars: Forces of Destiny

Book SynopsisThis insightful portrait of Winston Churchill delves beyond well-known political moments, incorporating perspectives from various individuals who encountered him throughout his life. From Bletchley Park codebreakers and Hollywood stars such as Charlie Chaplin, through writers as varied as H. G. Wells and P. G. Wodehouse, to the likes of Harold Wilson, Mahatma Gandhi and Queen Elizabeth II, these lesser-known interactions reveal glimpses of the man behind the legend. We meet Churchill the exuberant schoolboy thug with an early mania for bull-dogs, and Churchill the elder statesman shedding a tear in the House of Commons smoking room. Other incidents include a young journalist rudely dismissing a call from Churchill as a prank, and a visiting Dwight D. Eisenhower dreaming of being strangled, only to awake entangled in Churchill’s borrowed nightshirt. The book showcases the profound transformations during Churchill’s lifetime, which ran from Benjamin Disraeli’s premiership to the release of the Rolling Stones’ ‘Route 66’, and the shift from steam to atomic power. Examining controversial aspects of his legacy, this multifaceted portrait challenges preconceived notions, inviting readers to reconsider the complexities of Churchill.
