Book SynopsisThe true story of the clandestine British organisation briefed to wage psychological warfare to beat the NazisAt the beginning of the Second World War, a team of unlikely and ill-assorted characters assembled in their secret country headquarters. They had left their civilian roles as politicians, journalists, novelists and spies, advertisers, artists and even forgers, to work for a covert government organisation preparing to broadcast British propaganda into occupied territory. These men and women would become the Political Warfare Executive. Many of them were misfits with a questionable relationship to the truth, who were prepared to consider unconventional methods to achieve their goals: weakening enemy morale and sowing confusion. In the hush-hush' village of Aspley Guise near Woburn Abbey (8 miles from the codebreakers at Bletchley Park), they set up a series of undercover radio stations which would broadcast fake shows to Europe. This book will reveal how the once top secret w

Book SynopsisThis accessibly-written book provides lawyers, diplomats, scholars and students the tools to understand the law governing the powers of the UN Security Council, as conceived in the Charter and as they apply and evolve in practice, and explores the powers and limits of the Council within the international legal system.Trade Review'Whether you have an academic interest in the UN Security Council, happen to be a journalist seeking reliable background information about it, or simply want to know how the Council works and why it so frequently stays short of our expectations - from now on there is no better way of finding out than reaching for this sharp, crystal-clear book written by prominent insiders.' Bruno Simma, Former Judge at the International Court of Justice, Founding editor of the German Commentary on the UN Charter'This exceptionally well-organized and persuasive book by two noted legal scholars (and frequent, much sought-after, practitioners) on the UN Security Council's powers and wider role in international law, a much contested field, will set the standard for at least the coming generation.' David M. Malone, Under-Secretary-General of the United Nations'Wood and Sthoeger elegantly parse the voluminous practice of the U.N. Security Council to explain its most salient characteristics in relation to international law, notably its nature, process, power, limits, and law-making role. Through copious and compelling examples, the sometimes-obscure legal functions of this important political organ are thoughtfully revealed.' Sean D. • Shakespeare and Lost Plays

Cambridge University Press Shakespeare and Lost Plays

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisShakespeare and Lost Plays returns Shakespeare''s dramatic work to its most immediate and (arguably) pivotal context; by situating it alongside the hundreds of plays known to Shakespeare''s original audiences, but lost to us. David McInnis reassesses the value of lost plays in relation to both the companies that originally performed them, and to contemporary scholars of early modern drama. This innovative study revisits key moments in Shakespeare''s career and the development of his company and, by prioritising the immense volume of information we now possess about lost plays, provides a richer, more accurate picture of dramatic activity than has hitherto been possible. By considering a variety of ways to grapple with the problem of lost, imperceptible, or ignored texts, this volume presents a methodology for working with lacunae in archival evidence and the distorting effect of Shakespeare-centric narratives, thus reinterpreting our perception of the field of early modern drama.Trade Review'This is an exceptionally innovative book championing the brand new methodologies and discoveries associated with lost plays that the author and his collaborators have brought to the profession. It would be hard to think of a more groundbreaking work than this, and it will be necessary reading for all scholars of early modern drama, any cultural historians who find themselves confronting the issue of evidential loss, as well as students of these various fields.' Andy Kesson, University of Roehampton, London'This is a well-conceived, skilfully argued, and constantly astonishing book. Its object is to insist on the importance of a study of lost plays so as better to understand the canonical plays we have been too complacent about. It will impact substantially on Shakespeare studies, on Early Modern theatre studies more widely, on authorship determination, and on more general literary and historical studies. Shakespeare and Lost Plays is an outstanding publication.' David Carnegie, Victoria University of Wellington'A fascinating work of literary detection.' Gordon Parsons, Morning Star'The moments of brilliant speculation about enigmas such as Spanish Maze and Felmelanco are the heart of McInnis's work because they display not only superb research skills but also impressive synaptic leaps; at such moments, one feels one is reading both a scholar and a poet. Overall, this is a wonderful book that opens the imagination and proves the vitality and the value of the study of lost plays.' David Nicol, British Shakespeare Association's Journal'Anyone interested in researching historical writing, English or otherwise, would benefit from reading this book, to help us deal with the loss of sources, and to learn how to complicate and enrich our reading and understanding of the texts that did survive.' Sonja Kleij, English Studies'McInnis's study is generous and hopefully generative, and it deserves the kind of careful engagement it offers to its subject. McInnis sheds light on understudied plays and he finds exciting connections, never before identified, some of which in turn allow for a different perspective on individual Shakespeare plays and on his career and early afterlife. But above all, McInnis models an approach to scholarship that promises to yield further insights. This refreshing book, which balances meticulous attention to detail with imagination and creativity, deserves to be widely read.' Eoin Price, Early Theatre'The potential impact of McInnis's ground-breaking study is unlikely to be lost on readers … Shakespeare and Lost Plays opens up numerous explorative avenues for future investigations, and I have no doubt that it will be preserved in the annals of academic history as a seminal work' Jones, Bücherschau'This is a productive and helpful enterprise, which McInnis reaches through a series of skillful, careful, and innovative readings … This refreshing book, which balances meticulous attention to detail with imagination and creativity, deserves to be widely read. That the book is relatively inexpensive for a new academic hardback should help it get the attention it deserves.' Eoin Price, Early TheatreTable of ContentsIntroduction; 1. Charting the landscape of loss; 2. Early Shakespeare: 1594-98; 3. Shakespeare at the turn of the century, 1599-1603; 4. Courting controversy: Shakespeare and the king's men, 1604-08; 5. Book SynopsisWhat should conversations about race look and sound like in the elementary classroom? How do we respond authentically and truthfully to children's questions about the world? And how can we build classroom communities that encourage these meaningful conversations about race?Matthew Kay and Jennifer Orr take on these questions and more in We're Gonna Keep On Talking: How to Lead Meaningful Race Conversations in the Elementary Classroom. A companion work to Kay's Not Light, But Fire, this book focuses on the unique and powerful role discussions about race can play in the elementary classroom.Drawing its title inspiration from the lyrics of the freedom song "Ain't Gonna Let Nobody Turn Me Around," sung by hundreds of children marching against segregation in what came to be known as the Children's Crusade of 1963, We're Gonna Keep On Talking is written for teachers who are willing to match children's courage and brilliance, and who believe that "a foundation in meaningful race discourse will help [children] to seek justice for themselves and their neighbors, to be kinder, [and] more thoughtful."Writing with the humility and honest storytelling of two career classroom teachers, Matthew Kay and Jennifer Orr share: Strategies for building safe and supportive classroom and school spaces for productive discourse Dozens of practical teacher moves for facilitating race conversations Classroom stories that allow readers to envision ways into the work through picture books, art, graphs, historical photographs, and current events Tips for aligning the work of race conversations to your grade-level standards Whether you are unsure of where to begin or looking to deepen your practice, We're Gonna Keep On Talking will be your guide to the important work of race conversations in the elementary classroom.Trade Review"More than ever, we need educators brave enough to engage students in conversations that will help them expand their perspectives and worldviews. Kay and Orr are those educators, and with this book, they have gifted the field with their insights and knowledge." —Dr. Val Brown, educator and founder of #ClearTheAir“Couldn't put it down! Nineteen years as an elementary educator and there hasn't been a year where inquiries around race did not arise. This book is a guide to support how we prepare our students at the youngest ages to lovingly negotiate race in the classroom.” —Lynsey Burkins, elementary educator“With We're Gonna Keep on Talking, Matthew Kay and Jennifer Orr equip elementary teachers with something we've been in search of for a long time: the tools and know-how to engage our young students in meaningful conversations about race in our classrooms. This is a book I will turn to again and again to inform my practice. More importantly, it will give all of us the opportunity to grapple with the type of thinking and discussions that will ultimately lead us all, students and teachers alike, to co-create a more just world. Thank you, Matt and Jennifer!” —Christina Nosek, co-author of To Know and Nurture a Reader “Jennifer and Matthew show us what is possible when educators listen to children, are brave, and actively engage in the difficult conversations that our youngest children are already having about race, identity and social issues. It is our responsibility as educators to have meaningful race conversations with our youngest learners and guide them into these difficult conversations, not as isolated lessons, but as a way of being and living in our classroom communities. We're Gonna Keep on Talking shows us how we can trust the children and ourselves to have race conversations, why they are so critical, and is full of honest and relatable stories about having these conversations in our classrooms. This book has a sense of urgency running through it and will support you as you go into your classroom and "keep on talking" with your children. We cannot step back from these conversations as there is not a minute to waste. Our children, our communities and our world deserve spaces where meaningful race conversations are encouraged, supported and celebrated. This book will be the one you carry with you in your school bag, refer to often and take Matt and Jen with you into your classroom as you have these courageous and essential conversations with learners from Pre–K to upper elementary.” —Katie Keier, PreK teacher and co-author of Catching Readers Before They Fall: Supporting Readers Who Struggle, K-4Table of ContentsIntroduction We're Gonna Keep on Talking; Part 1: The Ecosystem; Chapter 1: Building Community Together; Chapter 2: Developing Our “Talking Game”; Chapter 3: Improving Our Dialogic Pedagogy; Part 2: A Study of Conversations; Chapter 4: Names and Identities in Preschool and Early Elementary; Chapter 5: How the Past Impacts the Present in Middle Elementary; Chapter 6: Voting Rights in Upper Elementary; Epilogue Giants

Welch’s work has straddled sculpture, collage, and textiles, but in early 2017, he shifted to mosaic as his primary medium. As a child, the artist was introduced to mosaic by his grandmother, an experience that has a lasting impact on the way he works the age-old medium to piece together disparate materials and histories. Welch treats mosaic as a physical manifestation of intertextuality, referring to the colliding contexts he unearths in the work as a kind of "infiltration."While Welch’s chosen medium evokes ancient traditions, the effect of his work is decidedly contemporary. His chaotic, jumbled compositions speak to the same anxiety felt in the Information Age, an era when unlimited

Manchester University Press Shakespeare's Cinema of Love: A Study in Genre

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisThis engaging and stimulating book argues that Shakespeare's plays significantly influenced movie genres in the twentieth century, particularly in films concerning love in the classic Hollywood period. Shakespeare's 'green world' has a close functional equivalent in 'tinseltown' and on 'the silver screen', as well as in hybrid genres in Bollywood cinema. Meanwhile, Romeo and Juliet continues to be an enduring source for romantic tragedy on screen. The nature of generic indebtedness has not gained recognition because it is elusive and not always easy to recognise. The book traces generic links between Shakespeare's comedies of love and screen genres such as romantic comedy, 'screwball' comedy and musicals, as well as clarifying the use of common conventions defining the genres, such as mistaken identity, 'errors', disguise and 'shrew-taming'. This challenging and entertaining book will appeal to those interested in Shakespeare, movies and the representation of love in narratives.Trade Review‘R.S. White’s timely book on the influence of Shakespeare on Hollywood cinema offers a refreshing account of the ‘contestatory and symbiotic’ relationship between Shakespeare’s generic innovations and the development of cinematic genres in early Hollywood.’ David McInnis, Australian Book Review June 2017 -- .Table of ContentsIntroduction: Shakespeare shaping modern movie genres1.'Madly mated': The Taming of the Shrew and odd-couple comedy2. Book SynopsisTHE IRISH TIMES BESTSELLER'A comprehensive investigation of the staggering damage we have done to the world's oceans and its life forms' Observer'A vital, fascinating, deeply researched exploration of Earth's last wilderness... Shocking and starkly 'illuminating - a must-read' Gaia VinceThe ocean covers seventy per cent of the surface of our planet, and two thirds of this lie beyond national borders. Owned by all nations and no nation simultaneously, these waters are home to some of the richest and most biodiverse environments on the planet. But they are also home to exploitation on a scale that few of us can imagine. Here, industry and economic progress rule and lax enforcement and apathy are the status quo. Out of sight and often out of mind, a battle rages to control, profit from, protect, or obliterate the world's largest, wildest commons. Heffernan sets sail on a journey to uncover the truth behind deeply exploitative fishing practices, investigate the potentially devastating impact of deep-sea mining, and hold to task the Silicon-valley interventionists whose solutions to climate change are often wildly optimistic, radically irresponsible or both. The result is a forceful and deeply researched manifesto calling for the protection and preservation of this final frontier - the last vestiges of wilderness on Earth.

Book SynopsisMeet the rare, obscure and utterly British species found nowhere else on earth.Around 70,000 species call Britain home, but how many of them can be found here and only here? Join conservationist James Harding-Morris as he uncovers the stories of our endemic wildlife the plants, animals and fungi that are unique to these islands.Determined to give these irreplaceable species their moment in the spotlight, James goes in search of them across the length and breadth of Britain, from wild and rugged Orkney, the only known location for the Orkney vole, down to suburban Plymouth where the horrid ground-weaver spider faces global extinction at the hands of developers. He seeks out alien fungi on the roadsides of Norfolk, explores Devon's depths in the hunt for ghostly cave shrimps, and traces the tribulations of interrupted brome, a grass that has gone extinct not once, but twice. Along the way, James meets the experts devoted to the study and survival of these vanishingly rare creatures and plants, individuals working tirelessly and often single-handedly to save them from the brink of global extinction. Because many of these species are at risk of disappearing forever, before most of us have even realised they exist. A tapestry of wonder and weirdness, tragedies and triumphs, Endemic celebrates what makes our natural history so special and calls on us all to cherish and protect it.
