Book SynopsisAt last, Bobbi Brown, iconic and innovative makeup maven and entrepreneur, shares her personal story of invention and reinvention in her captivating first memoir. In the 1980s, Bobbi Brown had a crazy thought: real faces were beautiful. At a time when cosmetic trends were about covering, contouring, and transforming, Bobbi blazed her own path, creating makeup that accentuated natural beauty and natural makeup. Simple is better than complicated. Family comes first. When life throws obstacles in your path, don't wallow; figure it out. And this hard-earned, deceptively simple wisdom is at the center of her new book, Still Bobbi.A bestselling author of nine makeup tutorial books, the one thing Bobbi has never written about is her life . . . until now. For the first time, Bobbi shares with her millions of fans where she comes from, how she navigated her childhood, formed her concept of beauty, built her namesake brand into a billion-dollar worldwide business, left her own brand, and then built another one and more. In sharing a lifetime of hard-won practical wisdom, tips, and business savvy, Bobbi's transformational stories give you the tools to reach for your own dreams and jump into life-changing action.

Book Synopsis"Latinx" (pronounced "La-teen-ex") is the gender-neutral term that covers the largest racial minority in the United States, and the poorest but fastest-growing American group, whose political empowerment is altering the balance of forces in a growing number of states. In this groundbreaking discussion, Ed Morales explains how Latinx political identities are tied to a long Latin American history of mestizaje, translatable as "mixedness" or "hybridity", and that this border thinking is both a key to understanding Latinx cultures and a challenge to America's infamously black-white racial regime.Trade ReviewIn a volume that offers once an survey of histories and contemporary trends of Latinx identity in the United States and a gesture toward a radical political potential predicated on such identity, Morales argues that "the Latinx view of race, inherited from nation-building ideologies that lionized race-mixing in Latin America, poses narratives that challenge and resist" the black-white binary which dominates Anglo-American thinking. -- Spencer Dew * Religious Studies Review; June 2019 *

Profile Books Ltd The Web of Meaning: Integrating Science and

Book Synopsis'The Web of Meaning is both a profound personal meditation on human existence and a tour-de-force weaving together of historic and contemporary world-wide secular and spiritual thought on the deepest question of all: why are we here?' Gabor Maté M.D., author, In The Realm of Hungry Ghosts: Close Encounters With Addiction 'We need, now more than ever, to figure out how to make all kinds of connections. This book can help--and therefore it can help with a lot of the urgent tasks we face.' Bill McKibben, author, Falter: Has the Human Game Begun to Play Itself Out? As our civilization careens towards a precipice of climate breakdown, ecological destruction and gaping inequality, people are losing their existential moorings. Our dominant worldview of disconnection, which tells us we are split between mind and body, separate from each other, and at odds with the natural world, has passed its expiration date. Yet another world is possible. Award-winning author, Jeremy Lent, investigates humanity's age-old questions - who am I? why am I? how should I live? - from a fresh perspective, weaving together findings from modern systems thinking, evolutionary biology and cognitive neuroscience with insights from Buddhism, Taoism and indigenous wisdom. The result is a breathtaking accomplishment: a rich, coherent worldview based on a deep recognition of connectedness within ourselves, between each other, and with the entire natural world.Trade ReviewThe Web of Meaning is both a profound personal meditation on human existence and, as its title implies, a tour-de-force weaving together of historic and contemporary world-wide secular and spiritual thought on the deepest question of all: why are we here? -- Gabor Maté M.D., author of * In The Realm of Hungry Ghosts: Close Encounters With Addiction *We need, now more than ever, to figure out how to make all kinds of connections. • The Force of Nonviolence: An Ethico-Political

Verso Books The Force of Nonviolence: An Ethico-Political

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisJudith Butler's new book shows how an ethic of nonviolence must be connected to a broader political struggle for social equality. Further, it argues that nonviolence is often misunderstood as a passive practice that emanates from a calm region of the soul, or as an individualist ethical relation to existing forms of power. But, in fact, nonviolence is an ethical position found in the midst of the political field. An aggressive form of nonviolence accepts that hostility is part of our psychic constitution, but values ambivalence as a way of checking the conversion of aggression into violence. One contemporary challenge to a politics of nonviolence points out that there is a difference of opinion on what counts as violence and nonviolence. The distinction between them can be mobilised in the service of ratifying the state's monopoly on violence.Considering nonviolence as an ethical problem within a political philosophy requires a critique of individualism as well as an understanding of the psychosocial dimensions of violence. Butler draws upon Foucault, Fanon, Freud, and Benjamin to consider how the interdiction against violence fails to include lives regarded as ungrievable. By considering how 'racial phantasms' inform justifications of state and administrative violence, Butler tracks how violence is often attributed to those who are most severely exposed to its lethal effects. The struggle for nonviolence is found in movements for social transformation that reframe the grievability of lives in light of social equality and whose ethical claims follow from an insight into the interdependency of life as the basis of social and political equality.Trade ReviewPraise for Frames of War:A trenchant and brilliant book. -- Mike Rowe * Utne Reader *Praise for Frames of War:It's clear that its author is still interested in stirring up trouble-academic, political and otherwise. * Bookforum *Praise for Frames of War:Judith Butler is quite simply one of the most probing, challenging, and influential thinkers of our time. -- J. • Verso Books Snowden's Box: Trust in the Age of Surveillance

Book SynopsisOne day in the spring of 2013, a box appeared outside a fourth-floor apartment door in Brooklyn, New York. The recipient, who didn't know the sender, only knew she was supposed to bring this box to a friend, who would ferry it to another friend. This was Edward Snowden's box-printouts of documents proving that the US government had built a massive surveillance apparatus and used it to spy on its own people-and the friend on the end of this chain was filmmaker Laura Poitras. Thus the biggest national security leak of the digital era was launched via a remarkably analog network, the US Postal Service. This is just one of the odd, ironic details that emerges from the story of how Jessica Bruder and Dale Maharidge, two experienced journalists but security novices (and the friends who received and ferried the box) got drawn into the Snowden story as behind-the-scenes players. Their initially stumbling, increasingly paranoid, and sometimes comic efforts to help bring Snowden's leaks to light, and ultimately, to understand their significance, unfold in an engrossing narrative that includes emails and diary entries from Poitras. This is an illuminating essay on the status of transparency, privacy, and trust in the age of surveillance.Trade ReviewI've read virtually all of the books about the Snowden leaks, but this one stands apart.A beautifully written, gripping new book. -- Cory Doctorow * Boing Boing *A short, yet fluent and well-researched, work from a duo of US-based investigative journalists...despite the title, 'Snowden's Box' is essentially not about the box as such, but, as the authors themselves, acknowledge, about some of the most powerful analogue technology in the world: human relationships. -- Vitali Vitaliev * Engineering & Technology *The story of Edward Snowden's disclosure of NSA secrets to the press has been told and retold in books, films, and countless articles. Left unreported has been the quiet role of [Jessica Bruder and Dale Maharidge] who literally had Snowden material mailed to them in a cardboard box.[In Snowden's Box], the duo finally tells their story of beginners' encryption, convoluted codewords, and extreme paranoia. -- Sam Biddle * The Intercept *A gonzo story, told with a sense of humour...Bruder and Maharidge tell a good yarn and make a strong case against government surveillance. They argue that everybody should have something to hide. * Morning Star *The simplest human connections are sometimes vitally important for journalists to carry out their work beyond the gaze of the spying agencies. Bruder and Maharige's book is a timely reminder of this fact. * Counterfire *

Book SynopsisFrom gravity to black holes, special relativity to global warming, this authoritative and entertaining book from bestselling author Marcus Chown breaks down complex science into manageable chunks, explaining the one thing you really need to know to get to grips with the subject.Rather than trying to bend your mind around all the vast and confounding details of things such as gravitational waves, electricity and black holes, wouldn’t it be easier to understand just one central concept from which everything else follows? If you’ve ever found yourself fascinated by the idea of quantum computing but feel a little overwhelmed by the mindblowing subject of quantum mechanics or concerned by climate change but haven’t been able to get to grips with the details of global warming, this book is for you. Let’s take atoms, for example - what on earth are they? Well, if you start to think of them less like things you can’t see with complex little nuclei and more like the alphabet of nature, which in different configurations can make a rose, a galaxy or a newborn baby, they might start to feel a little more understandable. Or gravitational waves - they sound poetic, but why are they creating so much excitement? Think of them as the voice of space, vibrations on the drumskin of space-time - before delving into all their complexities. In twenty-one short and engaging chapters, Chown explains the one thing you need to know to understand some of the most important scientific ideas of our time. Packed full of astounding facts, scientific history and the entertaining personalities at the heart of the most pivotal discoveries about the workings of our universe, this is an accessible guide to all the tricky stuff you’ve always wanted to understand more about.

    20 in stock

Book SynopsisThis new book deals with a subject that will be close to the hearts of many aviation enthusiasts in that it is commemorating the gate guardians that for decades were a feature at the entrance to many RAF, Fleet Air Arm and Army bases. Who knows how many were inspired to take an interest in military aviation, to join the Air Cadets or even pursue a career in aviation by these potent symbols of Britain''s military aviation heritage?Back in the 1970s and 1980s it was rare for a military aviation base in the UK not to be graced by a gate guardian and these airframes have always fascinated enthusiasts. Prominently located and usually kept in good condition, these retired aircraft allowed passers-by to see up close examples of historic and significant aircraft types, such as the Hurricanes and Spitfires which won the Battle of Britain. As time moved on, other retired aircraft took their places on these plinths, early military jets and helicopters among them. The book traces gate guardians on a location-by-location basis. It presents full histories of significant examples and details all aircraft that have been displayed at military establishments across Great Britain and its Crown Territories. As well as the fascinating aircraft, the book provides background on many long-forgotten military bases.Another feature of the books is the ''harvesting'' of Spitfire and Hurricanes as ''extras'' in the epic film Battle of Britain; the scheme that replaced original aircraft used as gate guardians with full-scale replicas, allowing the return of precious original airframes back to the skies. In addition, for the first time the histories and fates of the hundreds of aircraft used for instruction and display by Air Cadet squadrons since the early days of World War Two are detailed. On Guard is a wonderfully nostalgic journey back in time, copiously illustrated throughout and including colour images taken over a period of six decades.
