Profile Books Ltd Out of Your Mind: Tricksters, Interdependence and
Book SynopsisIn order to come to your senses, Alan Watts often said, you sometimes need to go out of your mind. Out of Your Mind brings readers, for the first time, six of this legendary thinker's most engaging teachings on how to break through the limits of the rational mind. Offering answers to generations of spiritual seekers, Alan Watts is the voice for all who search for an understanding of their identity and role in the world. For those both new and familiar with Watts, this book invites us to delve into his favourite pathways out of the trap of conventional awareness: discover art of the "controlled accident" - what happens when you stop taking your life so seriously and start enjoying it with complete sincerity. Embrace chaos to discover your deepest purpose. How do we come to believe "the myth of myself" - that we are skin-encapsulated egos separate from the world around us-and how to transcend that illusion? Find the miracle that occurs when we stop taking life so seriously.Trade ReviewPraise for Alan Watts: Offering spiritual answers... Watts is the voice of all who seek a deeper understanding of their own identity and role in the world. * Watkins Review *The best book I've ever read on the nature of what actually is, what the world is about, and how you should behave. * John Lloyd, Desert Island Discs *There is just something so right-minded about his overall awareness that I still love reading and listening to anything by him. Out of Your Mind certainly qualifies, and is a fine indicator of why Watts was both my philosophical and literary mentor. This book makes fine company with his best, and I can highly recommend it as a fine starting place to the wonderful world of Alan Watts. -- Ken Wilber * (author of Integral Meditation) *

Pan Macmillan Wayfinding: The Art and Science of How We Find
Book Synopsis'Beautifully written and researched.' - Isabella Tree, author of WildingThe physical world is infinitely complex, yet most of us are able to find our way around it. We can walk through unfamiliar streets while maintaining a sense of direction, take shortcuts along paths we have never used and remember for many years places we have visited only once. These are remarkable achievements. In Wayfinding, Michael Bond explores how we do it: how our brains make the ‘cognitive maps’ that keep us orientated, even in places that we don’t know. He considers how we relate to places, and asks how our understanding of the world around us affects our psychology and behaviour. The way we think about physical space has been crucial to our evolution: the ability to navigate over large distances in prehistoric times gave Homo sapiens an advantage over the rest of the human family. Children are instinctive explorers, developing a spatial understanding as they roam. And yet today few of us make use of the wayfaring skills that we inherited from our nomadic ancestors. Most of us have little idea what we may be losing.Bond seeks an answer to the question of why some of us are so much better at finding our way than others. He also tackles the controversial subject of sex differences in navigation, and finally tries to understand why being lost can be such a devastating psychological experience. For readers of writers as different as Robert Macfarlane and Oliver Sacks, Wayfinding is a book that can change our sense of ourselves.'A fascinating excursion into the very nature of exploration. Absorbing stuff.' – explorer Benedict AllenTrade ReviewFascinating . . . Bond offers stories of phenomenal feats of navigation . . . Ultimately, “we are spatial beings” and Wayfinding skilfully and at times movingly makes the case for how deeply that is true. * Sunday Times *In this fascinating book about our gift for what Michael Bond calls wayfinding, he makes a compelling case that our ancient abilities to get from A to B aren’t just a matter of geography. * New Statesman *Michael Bond’s fascinating, incisive account of how the human brain evolved to keep us orientated throws up intriguing questions about how we live today . . . Beautifully written and researched; I hugely enjoyed this book. -- Isabella Tree, author of WildingTo understand anything, we first need to put it in some sort of order. A sense of direction is essential to the development of intelligence. Does this mean our world of automated travel and route-dictating apps is making us stupid? Michael Bond investigates in Wayfinding. * New Scientist *One of the most fascinating books I have read for a long while, not least because of how it opens up so many other subjects. * Scotsman *I hope this book will inspire people to explore and experiment with [their navigational] abilities, for if they do, they will be in for a wonderful surprise. -- Robin Knox-JohnstonAn excellently researched popular science book which explains how people — including experienced travellers — get lost, and why some individuals have superior navigational skills than others. * Spectator *A fascinating excursion into the very nature of exploration. Absorbing stuff. -- Benedict Allen

Philip Wilson Publishers Ltd Chinese Wallpaper in Britain and Ireland
Book SynopsisChinese wallpaper has been an important element of western interior decoration for three hundred years. As trade between Europe and China flourished in the seventeenth century, Europeans developed a strong taste for Chinese art and design. The stunningly beautiful wall coverings now known as `Chinese wallpaper’ were developed by Chinese painting workshops in response to western demand. In spite of their spectacular beauty, Chinese wallpapers have not been studied in any depth until relatively recently. This book provides an overview of some of the most significant Chinese wallpapers surviving in the British Isles. Sumptuously illustrated, it shows how these wallpapers became a staple ingredient of high-end interiors while always retaining a touch of the exotic.Trade ReviewOffers dizzying temptations. After even a cursory flick, it is impossible not to feel one’s curiosity piqued by surviving descriptions, for example, of the Countess of Castlemaine’s rooms at Wantead House, "finely adorned with China paper, the Figures of Men, Women, Birds, Flowers, the Liveliest I ever saw.” -- Matthew Dennison * The World of Interiors *You would be forgiven for turning to Chinese Wallpaper in Britain and Ireland for the pictures alone. Here are tantalising glimpses of private chambers, hung with geometric arrangements of Chinese prints in the mid-18th century. Luxuriate only in the images, though, and you stand to miss de Bruijn’s formidable detective work, charting the complex cross-pollination of influences between Western Europe and China. -- Hettie Judah * Art Quarterly *This is the first volume in a welcome cooperation between The National Trust and Philip Wilson Publishers which, it is planned, will lead to a wider exposure to the public of some of the valuable and unique furnishings and valuables within the properties held by the NT. As usual, Philip Wilson Publishers have excelled with their production of this book on the wallpapers within National Trust properties. Up until now, there was just a slim National Trust brochure on this neglected subject. Now we have a proper book in which the illustration is matched by the scholarship. -- Paul Harris * Chinese Art Blog *Chinese wallpaper has been an important element of western interior decoration for three hundred years. As trade between Europe and China flourished in the seventeenth century, Eurpeans developed a strong taste for Chinese art and design. The stunningly beautiful wall coverings now known as Chinese wallpaper were developed by Chinese painting workshops in response to western demand. Despite their spectacular beauty, Chinese wallpapers have not been studied by European scholars in any depth until relatively recently. Chinese Wallpaper in Britain and Ireland, by Emile de Bruijn, changes that. It provides an overview of some of the most significant surviving Chinese wallpapers in private and public ownership in the British Isles. Sumptuously illustrated, it shows how these wallpapers be-came a staple ingredient of high-end interiors. * Asian Books Blog *De Bruijn’s book is highly readable, with plenty of appropriately sized, full-page colour illustrations of these exquisite wallpapers, which serve to extend the appeal of the book beyond the academic and professional to a much wider readership. * Institute of Historic Building Conservation *Table of ContentsIntroduction: A Global Product 1. Book SynopsisThe blank page can be daunting, but 10 Step Drawing: Flowers offers an easy jumping-off point for any doodler to be creative. Other titles in the series: 10 Step Drawing: Animals.Trade ReviewThis is the companion to Heather Kilgour’s 10 Step Drawing Animals (also found on this site). Just like its fellow you can learn how to draw seventy-five beautiful flowers and arrangements in just ten steps with this useful primer. Each flower is shown being constructed a stage at a time on one or two pages taking you from a mere shape or line to a finished colored drawing. First the introduction explains how the process works and tells you what you need to buy and why. Pencils or paints are the suggested mediums for adding color, and anybody who is even mildly interested in art or a keen crafter will already own most of what they will need. The book is divided into four sections comprising blooms, blossoms, botanicals and displays. Blooms are your basic garden favorites, blossoms can be found on trees in spring, botanicals are more unusual items (actually rather a mixed bag) and displays are bouquets and wreaths. Even a drawing novice can easily get the line drawing right; adding color is trickier and a true beginner will probably want to purchase a basic book in their chosen medium. This is, after all, a book about drawing not coloring and it certainly succeeds in showing how simple it is to draw a line drawing of a flower. One thing to help you with the color aspect is the row of circles at the bottom of each page showing the colors used, which is a nice touch. Choose from garden flowers like foxgloves, a water lily, rose and bluebell or depict cherry blossom, crab apple blossom or magnolias. Draw botanicals such as aloe vera, pitcher plants and Christmas cactus or sketch a festive wreath, wild flower bouquet or a bunch of spring bulbs. Each flower has a short piece about it and to help you choose your project there is a list of contents at the front. If you want to learn to draw flowers from scratch this is a good place to do so. -- Rachel Hyde * myshelf.com *This new series presents what we might call a quick route to drawing. Each of the 75 projects includes nine outline stages, plus a final one where the colour is added. What is most useful is the simple shapes with which each begins. If you’re new to drawing, getting this right can be the hardest part and represents the foundations on which the finished result will stand or fall. Beginners should find the process reassuring and the routines easy to follow and get to grips with. The method and results are really quite attractive. -- Henry Malt * Artbookreview.net *These guides provide a simple introduction for the absolute beginner. Atlantic Books Moral Tribes: Emotion, Reason and the Gap Between
Book SynopsisOur brains were designed for tribal life, for getting along with a select group of others (Us), and for fighting off everyone else (Them). But modern life has thrust the world's tribes into a shared space, creating conflicts of interest and clashes of values, along with unprecedented opportunities. As the world shrinks, the moral lines that divide us become more salient and more puzzling. We fight over everything from tax codes to gay marriage to global warming, and we wonder where, if at all, we can find our common ground.A grand synthesis of neuroscience, psychology, and philosophy, Moral Tribes reveals the underlying causes of modern conflict and lights a way forward. Our emotions make us social animals, turning Me into Us. But they also make us tribal animals, turning Us against Them. Our tribal emotions make us fight, sometimes with bombs, sometimes with words, and often with life-and-death stakes. Drawing inspiration from moral philosophy and cutting-edge science, Moral Tribes shows when we should trust our instincts, when we should reason, and how the right kind of reasoning can move us forward.Joshua Greene is the director of Harvard University's Moral Cognition Lab, a pioneering scientist, a philosopher, and an acclaimed teacher. The great challenge of Moral Tribes is this: How can we get along with Them when what they want feels so wrong? Finally, Greene offers a surprisingly simple set of maxims for navigating the modern moral terrain, a practical road map for solving problems and living better lives.Trade ReviewThis is an important synthesising work of great depth and breadth. Quercus Publishing Churchill's Secret Warriors: Now a major Guy
Book SynopsisOne of the most remarkable stories in the history of Special Forces' operations - Daily ExpressIn the bleak moments after defeat on mainland Europe in winter 1939, Winston Churchill knew that Britain had to strike back hard. So Britain's wartime leader called for the lightning development of a completely new kind of warfare, recruiting a band of eccentric free-thinking warriors to become the first 'deniable' secret operatives to strike behind enemy lines, offering these volunteers nothing but the potential for glory and all-but-certain death. Churchill's Secret Warriors tells the story of the daring victories for this small force of 'freelance pirates', undertaking devastatingly effective missions against the Nazis, often dressed in enemy uniforms and with enemy kit, breaking all previously held rules of warfare. Master storyteller Damien Lewis brings the adventures of the secret unit to life, weaving together the stories of the soldiers' brotherhood in this compelling narrative, from the unit's earliest missions to the death of their leader just weeks before the end of the war.Trade ReviewOne of the most extraordinary stories of World War II is also one of the least commonly known ... compelling ... an eloquent and welcome tribute to their selfless, sometimes reckless courage - a howitzer of a tale that more people should know about -- Brian Viner * Daily Mail *

Bloomsbury USA Into the Reich
Book SynopsisEnriched by extraordinary first-hand accounts, this is a fascinating history of the dying days of the Third Reich as Stalin sought to consolidate his own empire. In January 1945, the Red Army launched a powerful offensive across the Vistula River to drive the Wehrmacht out of Poland, with the intention of securing a start line for an operation that would ultimately result in the capture of Berlin and the end of the war. But, as Prit Buttar expertly reveals, there were other issues at play. Stalin was determined to push the boundaries of the Soviet Union further west, restoring land lost by the tsars and securing vast industrial and mineral wealth. While negotiations took place between the Allied powers regarding the fate of Poland, the Red Army burst through the German lines, liberating Auschwitz even as the SS drove concentration camp inmates onto frozen roads in a series of death marches. The Wehrmacht staged a desperate fight back with their last major armoured offensive on the Eastern Front. Launched in February 1945 from the German-Polish border, it forced a halt to the Soviet forces on the banks of the Oder before the rush to Berlin. Written by an acknowledged expert on the Eastern Front and packed with first-hand accounts, this is the definitive account of the strategic goals, both military and political, of Stalin, his generals, and their armies as they raced into the Reich, and of the German forces who stood in the way.
