Book SynopsisTHE BOOK THAT BROUGHT DOWN RUPERT MURDOCH - AND A NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLERMeet the Murdochs and the disastrously dysfunctional family of Fox News. Until recently, they formed the most powerful media and political force in America. Now their empire is cracking up and crashing down. In his irresistible trilogy on the chaotic Trump presidency - Fire and Fury, Siege, and Landslide - the journalist Michael Wolff led readers deep into the twisted corridors of the White House. Drawing on years of unprecedented access to the Murdoch family and key players, he plunges us behind the scenes of another empire of influence, and the result is astonishing and unforgettable. Here is Rupert Murdoch, the ninety-two-year-old billionaire - concerned about his legacy, but more concerned about profits. Here are his contentious children, jockeying to take over when the old man is gone. Here is star anchor Tucker Carlson considering a run for the Trade ReviewA Wolff book never fails to be delicious, as well as sweepingly insightful, on the turmoil behind various thrones but he has a Murdochian instinct: when in doubt, go for the jugular. * John Gapper, The Financial Times *An entertaining read. Wolff is interested in power and personalities, and in The Fall he offers countless lacerating portraits. -- Justin Peters, The Washington PostAmusingly vicious and very well-timed... In Wolff's telling, Murdoch is a sort of hapless Frankenstein, abominating the monster he set loose on the world but unsure how to fight him. -- Michelle Goldberg, The New York TimesWolff, author of a spate of books skewering the dysfunctional Trump presidency, returns to his investigation of the Murdochs with a fast-paced, gossip-filled recounting of family drama rivalling Succession in intrigue and bitter strife and the travails and scandals that have roiled Fox News. . . . Wolff is merciless. -- Kirkus ReviewsGripping -- The New EuropeanIf it's true that Succession is based on the Murdoch family civil war, this astonishing exposé of life in King Rupert's court proves that truth remains stranger than fiction * Daily Telegraph, 50 Best Books of 2023 *

  • Bloomsbury Publishing PLC Assignment Moscow Reporting on Russia from Lenin

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisJames Rodgers was a Foreign Correspondent in Moscow, Brussels and Gaza, working for BBC and Reuters. Since 2012, James has taught Journalism at City, University of London, where he lectures in the History of Journalism, and the Reporting of Armed Conflict.Trade ReviewAssignment Moscow exposes how the Moscow correspondent has had to adapt to multiple manifestations of censorship, or compete with state-run media, the severity of which has ebbed and flowed with changes in regime. * History Today *Rodgers’s narrative rests on an enormous number of articles in Anglo-American media, books by and about journalists, and his own interviews with many Moscow correspondents. * Foreign Affairs Magazine *Rodgers retains his focus on the correspondent’s interactions with Russia and Russians, rather than being sidetracked into discussions of normative values or political controversy. This approach prepares the reader for the conclusion, which celebrates the openness and curiosity of the best Russia correspondents, reminding the reader that what they have just read is a history not of Russia but of how Western correspondents have told Russia’s stories. Differentiating the two is an important and hitherto neglected task but one that James Rodgers has achieved masterfully. * Journalism *Reporting from Russia has never been easy; Rodgers vividly captures the changing fortunes of Moscow correspondents over the past hundred years, as they penetrated the mysteries of life in Russia and brought them to our newspapers and screens. Some were duped, some were fellow-travellers or spies; most battled against censors and blank-faced politicians; all have helped to shape our understanding of the world’s biggest country. * Angus Roxburgh, former Moscow correspondent for the BBC, Sunday Times and Economist *A highly original, engrossing and accessible book, Assignment Moscow stands out among journalistic accounts of Russia for its subtlety, humility and historic scope. It tells the story of British and American journalists who aimed to throw light on Russia from Lenin to Putin, and in the process illuminated the West itself. * Arkady Ostrovsky, Author of The Invention of Russia: The Rise of Putin and the age of Fake News, Winner of the 2016 Orwell Prize *[Rodgers'] experience has been wisely distilled in this fair-minded, balanced and perceptive exploration of the problems reporters have faced in trying to report from Russia. * British Journalism Review *Reveals how journalists’ experiences reporting from Russia for the past 100 years mirrors its changing attitude to the West. * The Journalist *The author has made a great contribution to clarify a number of important aspects of Russian history, and his work would be of interest to historians, readers interested in understanding the practice of journalism and journalism students. * International Journal of Russian Studies *Writing about journalism in Russia since the revolution, James Rodgers rightly emphasises that to understand Russia you have to talk to people of all kinds. But he argues that even correspondents who knew the language and the history found it hard to report dispassionately because of official obstruction and their own emotional involvement. * Rodric Braithwaite *It is hard to believe that in the torrent of books published on Russia each year, that one could come along as original and valuable as Assignment Moscow. One comes to appreciate the service of our reporting men and women in Moscow. For all their fallibilities, without their dedication, we wouldn’t have half the understanding of Russia that we have today, imperfect as it will always be. We therefore owe them – and especially Rodgers as journalist, teacher, analyst and cataloguer – a huge debt. * James Nixey, Chatham House *Table of ContentsAcknowledgements List of illustrations Foreword by Martin Sixsmith Introduction 1.Sympathies in the Struggle: Reporting Russia in Revolution, 1917 2.‘The press is lying, or does not know’: Russia goes to war with itself 3.From ‘A Wild And Barbarous Country’ via Starvation to Stalinism 4.Believe Everything But The Facts 5.But What A Story Everything Tells Here: The Great Patriotic War 6.Secrets, Censorship, and Cocktails with the Central Committee 7.A Window On The Country: Reporting Reform and Ruin 8.‘Free for all’: the Yeltsin era 9.Becoming Strong Again? 10.Russia: My History Bibliography Index

Book SynopsisWhy in the early 1970s does The Times reject the idea of a national lottery, as rewarding luck not merit and effort, but warmly welcome one by the 1990s? Why in the 1970s do the Daily Mail''s TV reviews address serious contemporary themes such as class- and race-relations, whereas forty years later they are largely concerned with celebrities, talent shows, and nostalgia? Why does the Conservative Chancellor in the 2010s mention ''Britain'' so very often, when the Conservative Chancellor in the 1970s scarcely does at all? Book SynopsisTrade Review“Napoli narrates the origin stories of NPR’s female journalistic superheroes … a history filled with so many powerful moments and fascinating details about journalism, perseverance, and gender bias.” * Kirkus Reviews *[Susan, Linda, Nina, and Cokie] illuminates the terrifying, thrilling energy of NPR as start-up....The book is a lesson in how the fringe project of one generation becomes the mainstream of the next....Napoli portrays the network’s endearingly experimental, chaotic beginning. * The New York Times Book Review *Lisa Napoli's Susan, Linda, Nina & Cokie is an intimate and beautifully told tale of the extraordinary coming together of four women who would help shape a network, the news business, and each other's lives. I feel immensely grateful to these women for all they have done for NPR and for women in journalism and also incredibly proud to work alongside them. -- Stacey Vanek SmithNPR gave a voice to women in news before many other news outlets, and NPR's founding mothers used their powerful voices to tell the stories that explained and changed people's lives. Lisa Napoli impressively chronicles how these four pioneers paved the way for women journalists everywhere. -- Lynn Povich * author of The Good Girls Revolt *“Histories, biographies, and behind-the-scenes narratives about the news biz typically idolize swaggering, chain-smoking, tough-talking dudes who tower over testimonies with testosterone-infused personalities. But with Susan, Linda, Nina & Cokie, Napoli honors not the dog-eat-dog variety of journalist, but the fortitude of sisterhood, of women supporting each other.” * Oprah Daily *Readers are left with inspiring insights into the pathbreaking work of these four women, but more importantly with a sense of how the status of some women and the role of the media have both changed in the last 50 years. * Library Journal *“Napoli chronicles not just the camaraderie of Stamberg, Wertheimer, Totenberg and Roberts, but their commitment to help the careers of younger women who aspired to follow them. The founding mothers, in word and deed, offer a powerful lesson on what can happen when we carry as we climb.” * The Washington Post *“Public radio fans will treasure this book.” -- Brian Stelter“Napoli has written an eye-opening, often funny, sometimes horrifying story that includes madcap escapades, thrilling scoops, and misogynistic misadventures.” * AudioFile *“Lisa Napoli’s can’t-miss account of four female journalistic titans who banded together in the nonprofit radio organization’s early days.” * Harper's Bazaar *

Book SynopsisReporting about a federal trial court or appellate court is quite unlike reporting on the other two branches of government. Among the most notable differences are that some legal terms are hard to understand; there are many rules; and federal judges work largely alone. This book provides a guide for journalists on federal courts. It also provides an analytic overview of the professional experiences and qualifications of those individuals who are currently serving as active U.S. circuit court judges; provides a statistical analysis of the time from nomination to confirmation for U.S. circuit and district court nominees from Presidents Reagan to Obama; identifies possible consequences of a protracted confirmation process for circuit and district court nominees; and identifies policy options the Senate might consider to shorten the length of time from nomination to confirmation for lower federal court nominees.

How and why is loaded language used, and how can a reporter counter attempts at gaslighting and manipulation? How does the profession reinvent the interview to connect to audiences through multiple literacies? Book SynopsisMaori journalism in Aotearoa New Zealand has become a vibrant industry, reporting through print, radio, television and the internet. This book looks at the history of Maori journalism and the elements that make it what it is today. The author examines the way that news values common in English-speaking countries are reinterpreted for a Maori worldview and analyses news stories to show how Maori perspectives are expressed. She also identifies how elements of whaikorero have been refashioned for news and the ways tapu and noa are managed by news teams. A host of well-known reporters share their perspectives on their work. They describe how they got into reporting, and we learn what happens as they gather information and produce their stories. In particular, we see how these journalists balance the demands of journalism and tikanga.

Book SynopsisThe pharmaceutical industry is broken. From the American hedge fund manager who hiked the price of an AIDS pill from $17.50 to $750 overnight to the children's cancer drugs left intentionally to expire in a Spanish warehouse, the signs of this dysfunction are all around. A system that was designed to drive innovation and patient care has been relentlessly distorted to drive up profits.Medicines have become nothing more than financial assets. The focus of drug research, how drugs are priced and who has access to them is now dictated by shareholder value, not the good of the public. Drug companies fixated on ever-higher profits are being fined for bribing doctors and striking secret price-gouging deals, while patients desperate for life-saving medicines are driven to the black market in search of drugs that national health services can't afford.Sick Money argues that the way medicines are developed and paid for is no longer working. Unless we take action we risk a dramatic decline in the pace of drug development and a future in which medicines are only available to the highest bidder. In this book investigative journalist Billy Kenber offers a diagnosis of an industry in crisis and a prescription for how we can fight back.Trade ReviewBilly Kenber is one of the most promising young journalists in the land, and he has, unsurprisingly, produced a compelling debut which surprises, entertains and inspires dismay. An essential read -- SATHNAM SANGHERABilly Kenber does a fantastic job, pulling apart the origins of the drugs industry and machinations of its shameless profiteers with surgical precision . . . it's quite a ride. A must-read for anyone who wants to understand how the drugs industry really does its business -- JACQUES PERETTIA forensic and very readable account of the reforms needed to make the pharmaceutical industry serve the public good as well as private profit . . . Kenber's ground-breaking investigative reporting has . . . resulted in a change in the law in the UK, intervention by regulators, cuts in the price of some medicines, life-changing benefits for patients, savings of hundreds of millions of pounds for the NHS and record fines for drug firms -- ANDREW GRICE[Sick Money] distinguishes itself from many other books by its investigative power and meticulous clarity * * The Times * *Powerful, gripping and rigorous, this book couldn't have come at a better time. Never has it been so important to delve into the tangled web behind the medicines and vaccines we all rely on. With years of research and reporting under his belt, Kenber is the perfect person to take us on this fascinating journey -- MAEVE McCLENAGHAN, author of NO FIXED ABODEA clever exploration of a scandal that affects everyone who uses - and pays for - the NHS. This is an enormously complex subject, but Kenber finds the interesting characters and fascinating details that bring the story to life. A great and important read -- HOLLY WATT, author of CASEY BENEDICT seriesA painstakingly researched and beautifully written history of the dark underbelly of the pharmaceutical industry, which never forgets to tell the stories of the vulnerable people harmed when these companies lose their moral compass. Book SynopsisOver the past half century, western democracies have lead efforts to entrench the economic and political values of liberal democracy into the foundations of European and international public order. As this book details, the relationship between the media and the state has been at the heart of those efforts. In that relationship, often framed in constitutional principles, the liberal democratic state has celebrated the liberty to publish information and entertainment content, while also forcefully setting the limits for harmful or offensive expression. It is thus a relationship rooted in the state''s need for security, authority, and legitimacy as much as liberalism''s powerful arguments for economic and political freedom. In Europe, this long running endeavour has yielded a market based, liberal democratic regional order that has profound consequences for media law and policy in the member states. This book examines the economic and human rights aspects of European media law, which is not only comparatively coherent but also increasingly restrictive, rejecting alternatives that are well within the traditions of liberalism. Parallel efforts in the international sphere have been markedly less successful. In international media law, the division between trade and human rights remains largely unabridged and, in the latter field, liberal democratic concepts of free speech are influential but rarely decisive. In the international sphere states are moreover quick to assert their rights to autonomy. Nonetheless, the current communications revolution has overturned fundamental assumptions about the media and the state around the world, eroding the boundaries between domestic and foreign media as well as mass and personal communication. European and International Media Law sets legal and policy developments in the context of this fast changing, globalized media and communications sector.Table of ContentsPART I: MEDIA LAW AND LIBERAL DEMOCRACY ; 1. Book SynopsisGlobal Entertainment Media offers a unique perspective on entertainment media worldwide. As one of the first comprehensive books to address entertainment mass media worldwide, it addresses students as TV watchers and takes them to new places, both geographically and intellectually. Editor Anne Cooper-Chen has gathered an international group of scholars to explore such concepts as psychology, gratifications, and effects of media entertainment and its relation to national cultures, as well as to discuss the business of international TV trade by transnational media corporations. In this volume, experts discuss the content, audiences, and cultural and legal aspects of their respective countries, all of which are major TV markets. The country-specific chapters draw on the individual insights, expertise, and currency of 10 resident authors. Contributions represent every hemisphere of the globe, offering detailed examinations of media entertainment in United Kingdom, Germany, Egypt, Nigeria, South Africa, India, Japan, China, Brazil, and Mexico. The two concluding chapters provide cross-national case studies that look at familiar TV experiences--The Olympics and the Who Wants to Be a Millionaire show--in global and novel ways.Global Entertainment Media is intended for students in international media, comparative media, cross-cultural communication, and television studies, and it also has much to offer scholars and researchers in entertainment media.Trade Review"...very rich set of data...interesting and informative volume."—Communication Research Trends"...a text that is representative of a diversity of national media.
