Stanford University Press The Time That Remains A Commentary on the Letter
Book SynopsisAgamben seeks to separate the Pauline texts from the history of the Church that canonized them, thus revealing them to be "the fundamental messianic texts of the West." He argues that Paul's Letters are concerned not with the foundation of a new religion but rather with the "messianic" abolition of Jewish law.Trade Review"The Time that Remains presents itself as an exegetical seminar on the opening line of the Letter to the Romans ("Paul, called as a slave of Jesus the Messiah, separated as apostle for the announcement of God")... Agamben's insightful close reading of the Pauline corpus sets this book apart from the more free-range grazing over the text modeled by Badiou and iek."—Radical Philosophy Review"Agamben, through the close reading of Pauline letter and the comparison of W. Benjamin's philosophy of history, gives us a fruitful key to better understand Western history and civilization. The Catholic University of America Press The Apostle Paul and His Letters An A24
Book SynopsisHelps readers see the Apostle Paul’s faith and hope at work as he evangelized the nations. Steeped in up-to-date scholarship and a passion for the gospel Paul preached, Prothro draws readers into Paul’s life and letters in order to help them hear the Apostle’s voice.Trade ReviewJames Prothro has here distilled a mass of learning into an intelligent and clearly written introduction to Paul's theology, letters and historical setting. Students will find an extremely helpful guide here to the apostle's thought and writings, as well as a lucid account of the main currents of contemporary interpretation. Highly recommended!""-Simon J. Gathercole, University of Cambridge""James Prothro offers students and the larger academic community an absorbing introduction to Paul in the classical style, leading the reader into the letters by means of historical context, genre, and theological concerns. We are swept away by a coherent big picture, but also captivated by such social details as the costliness of producing manuscripts in Paul's time. Here is a subtle, yet engaging, book that joins together elements of a handbook and a perspectival monograph, inviting us into ongoing scholarly discussions about the apostle's writings, making sane (if sometimes debatable) decisions about such matters, and showing definitively how the letters remain essential for the faithful.""-Edith M. Humphrey, Pittsburgh Theological Seminary""The past years have witnessed an overwhelming flood of studies on Paul the Apostle and his theology. James Prothro's new book, The Apostle Paul and his Letters, presents an up-to-date review of the main questions about Paul, and provides a clear, wise, and faith-filled review of Paul's life and each of his letters. Highly recommended for use in seminaries and theological colleges.""-Daniel Keating, Sacred Heart Major Seminary""James Protho has written an outstanding introduction to Paul and his letters. Comprehensive in scope, carefully researched, balanced, and theologically insightful, this work clarifies the background, structure, and theological issues of each letter that students need to know if they are to read Paul with confidence and understanding. It is an ideal text for introducing Paul to undergraduate and graduate students, one of the best available.""-Frank Matera, The Catholic University of America

SPCK Publishing Paul and the Faithfulness of God
Book SynopsisA masterly exposition of Paul's thought by one of his leading contemporary interpreters. The summation of a lifetime's study, this landmark book offers an unparalleled wealth of detailed insights into Paul's life, times and enduring impact. Destined to become the point of reference in Pauline studies for the next decade, and beyond.Trade ReviewTom Wright's long-awaited full-length study of St Paul will not in any way disappoint the high expectations that surround it. From the very first sentence, it holds the attention, arguing a strong, persuasive, coherent and fresh case, supported by immense scholarship and comprehensive theological intelligence. It is a worthy successor to his earlier magisterial studies of the themes of the Kingdom and the Resurrection: lively, passionate and deeply constructive, laying out very plainly the ways in which the faith of the New Testament is focused on God's purpose to re-create, through the fact of Jesus crucified and risen, our entire understanding of authority and social identity. * Rowan Williams, Master of Magdalene College, Cambridge *

Smithsonian Books The Jefferson Bible, Smithsonian Edition: The
Book SynopsisThe Jefferson Bible, or The Life and Morals of Jesus of Nazareth as it is formally titled, was Thomas Jefferson's effort to extract what he considered the pertinent doctrine of Jesus by removing sections of the New Testament containing supernatural aspects as well as perceived misinterpretations he believed had been added by the Four Evangelists. Using a razor, Jefferson cut and arranged selected verses from the books of Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John in chronological order, mingling excerpts from one text to those of another in order to create a single narrative. After completion of The Life and Morals, about 1820, Jefferson shared it with a number of friends, but he never allowed it to be published during his lifetime. The most complete form Jefferson produced was inherited by his grandson, Thomas Jefferson Randolph, and was published in 1895 by the National Museum in Washington.Once published in black-and-white facsimile by the Government Printing Office in 1900 as a gift for new members of Congress, the Jefferson Bible has never before been published in color in its complete form. The Jefferson Bible, Smithsonian Edition is an exact facsimile reproduction based on the original copy in the Smithsonian collections. The Jefferson Bible, Smithsonian Edition is as beautiful an object as was so painstakingly crafted by Thomas Jefferson himself.

Book SynopsisFollowing his well-received Apostle Paul, prominent European scholar Udo Schnelle now offers a major new theology of the New Testament. The work has been translated into English from the original German, with bibliographic adaptations, by leading American scholar M. Eugene Boring. This comprehensive critical introduction combines historical and theological analysis. Schnelle begins with the teaching of Jesus and continues with a discussion of the theology of Paul. He then moves on to the Synoptic Gospels; the deutero-Pauline, catholic, and Johannine letters; and Revelation, paying due attention to authorship, chronology, genre, and canonical considerations. This is an essential book for anyone with a scholarly interest in the New Testament.
