According to Otto Hermann Pesch, who translated and edited several volumes of the German edition of Thomas Aquinas, this commentary immediately preceded his development of Christology in the Summa Theologiae and represents Thomas at the pinnacle of his exegetic skills. His take on the Gospel begins with a systematic ordering of what the Evangelist intended and how he went about realising it. Next, Thomas relates the verse from the Gospel in question to other Biblical and non-Biblical texts. He also devotes much effort to the disputes going on with the heresies, which he attempts to refute by showing the contradiction in their arguments with the Bible.

Der Verfasser des zweiten Briefs antwortet auf sie mit einer bisher in der Exegese kaum bedachten eschatologischen Position: Er antwortet mit einer Erneuerung der Naherwartung, die Paulus im ersten Brief vertreten hat. Taeseong Roh gelingt es, den zweiten Brief des Paulus an die Thessalonicher (sozial-) geschichtlich zu erhellen. Er tritt damit einer in der Exegese weit verbreiteten Resignation entgegen, das im zentralen apokalyptischen Teil in 2Thess 2,3ff Gesagte sei so sehr verschlësselt, dass es heute nicht mehr zu enträtseln ist. It focuses on what we can learn about the author of James, by reading the text in light of a guiding research question: How does the author establish and assert authority? The letter builds literary authority for a number of purposes, one of which is to address socioeconomic disparity, a major concern for the author. The author of James presents a speech-in-character in the shape of a letter to establish his ethos (Ch. 2), employing vocabulary and style to signal his education implicitly (Ch. 3 & 4) and includes himself in the categories of sage, teacher and exegete explicitly (Ch. 5). From this standpoint, the author can address the rich as equals, rebuke them and admonish both rich and poor to receive Gods wisdom (Ch. 6).The comparison with ancient literary criticism shows that the categories at play are the same. The insight that language and ethos are inseparable categories in antiquity provides us with renewed ways to interpret the literary production of early Christianity. Both James and the Classicists present a competing epic in the context of the early imperium, the former with an Israelite piety that is superior to contemporary economic and moral categories and the latter with the supremacy of Greek culture as a foundation for Rome. The letter of James emerges as a document that builds educational ethos as a balance against the rich and powerful, a strategy that calls for a revision of both its rhetoric and socio-economic situation.

The antithesis between humiliation and exaltation characteristic of the ancient world is also used by Paul. Some of the classical authors accepted the possibility of a human resurrection. Paul made the theme of the resurrection of Jesus and the resurrection of believers one of the key treatises of his theology (1 Cor 15). The ancient world also had a negative understanding of heights as pride and exaltation. Stasiak also find this theme in Pauls letters, albeit in a somewhat richer dimension.

Korinna Zamfir argues that the ecclesiology of the Pastoral Epistles presupposes the metaphorical use of oikos Theou and shows that in Greco-Roman antiquity oikos denotes larger social entities like the religious association, the polisand the cosmos. The ekklesia is the oikos and polis of God. As a consequence the Pastoral Epistles define roles and ministries based on the public-private divide and on honor and shame mentality. Diese Allusionen entwerfen für die Erzählfigur des markinischen Jesus vor dem Hintergrund des Triumphzugs eine Doppelrolle: Im Geschick der Gestalt Jesus werden sowohl die Figur des siegreichen Triumphators wie die des im Triumphzug hinzurichtenden königlichen Gefangenen sichtbar. Auf diese Weise entsteht für die Erstleserinnen und -leser des Markusevangeliums das irritierende Konzept eines gekreuzigten Triumphators. Bilder von Hoheit und Niedrigkeit, Sieg und Niederlage, Tod und Leben überlagern sich. Und gerade im scheinbaren Scheitern am Kreuz sollen die Leser einen Triumphator entdecken: eine christologische Herausforderung erster Güte.In seiner Studie identifiziert und untersucht Markus Lau diese markinischen Allusionen auf das Ritual des römischen Triumphzugs unter Rekurs auf ein breites exegetisches Methodenspektrum und interpretiert diese Anspielungen im Blick auf ihre literarische Funktionalität.
