Baylor University Press Luke the Theologian
Book SynopsisIn this completely revised and updated edition, Fran?ºois Bovon provides a critical assessment of the last fifty-five years of scholarship on Luke-Acts. The study divides thematically, with individual chapters covering the subjects of history and eschatology, the role of the Old Testament, Christology, the Holy Spirit, conversion, and the church. Each chapter begins with a consideration of the exegetical and theological problems unique to each theme in Luke-Acts before providing a detailed survey and critique of contemporary English, German, French, Spanish, and Italian New Testament scholarship.Trade ReviewWith this revised and updated survey, now covering more than a half century of study, Bovon provides an especially helpful guide. Luke the Theologian shows once again the author's encyclopedic mastery of the literature on Luke, his uncommon gift for concise summary and fair and candid appraisal, and his deep, life-long engagement with these New Testament writings. John Carroll, Harriet Robertson Fitts Memorial Professor of New Testament and Dean of Union-PSCE at RichmondBovon's helpful survey maps the field in a way that reveals both general contours and distinctive trajectories. He describes the mountains and peaks but also uncovers a few chasms. It is a guidebook to enhance our exploration of scripture, charting out what has already been done and pointing the way toward future discoveries. De Gruyter Simon Magus: The First Gnostic?
Book SynopsisThis latest comprehensive work on Simon Magus lends new impetus to the investigation of Early Christianity and questions surrounding the origin and nature of Gnosticism. Major contributions of this study include: (1), a departure from the traditional exegesis of Acts 8, 5-24 (the first narrative source of Simon), and the later following reports of ancient Christian writers; (2), an overview of the literature of Graeco-Roman antiquity to determine the contribution of "magic" and "the Magoi" in the development of perceptions and descriptions of Simon; and (3), the inclusion of social science explanation models and modern estimations of "identity", in a creative approach to questions surrounding the phenomenon of Simon.

Taylor & Francis The Routledge Guidebook to The New Testament
Book SynopsisAs part of the Christian canon of scripture, the New Testament is one of the most influential works in history. Its impact can be seen in many different fields, but without an awareness of the historical, cultural, social, and intellectual context of early Christianity, it can be difficult for modern-day readers to fully understand what the first-century authors were trying to say and how the first readers of the New Testament would have understood these ideas. The Routledge Guidebook to the New Testament offers an academic introduction to the New Testament examining: The social and historical context in which the New Testament was written The primary text, supporting students in close analysis from a range of consensus positions The contemporary reception and ongoing influence of the New Testament With further reading suggestions, this guidebook is essential reading for all students of religion and philosoTrade ReviewThis exceptionally helpful and highly readable Guidebook is ideal for anyone looking for an introduction to the New Testament and its world. This book will enable a reader to appreciate the New Testament and its subsequent influence with greater depth and insight. Informed by the latest scholarship, it presents the range of scholarly views on key matters of debate, and the definition of key terms and answers to ‘frequently asked questions’ add greatly to its value. Taylor & Francis Ltd The New Testament in Muslim Eyes
Book SynopsisThis book explores Christian origins by examining a key New Testament epistle, Paul's letter to the Galatian churches, seen by Christians as the charter of Christian liberty from the inherited Jewish law. The New Testament in Muslim Eyes provides a close textual commentary on perhaps the earliest declaration of Paul's apostleship and of his undying commitment to the risen Christ. It notes the subtleties of the Greek original against the backdrop of an exciting glimpse of Quranic Arabic parallels and differences. It asks: Does Paul qualify as a prophet of Allah (God)? The thoughts of Paul are assessed by examining his claims against the background of Islam's rival views of Abraham and his legacy. The Arabic Quran framed and inspired the life of the Arab Apostle, Muhammad, who was sent, according to Islam, to all humanity, Jewish and Gentile alike. Pauline themes are set in dialectical tension with the claims of the Quran. Akhtar compares and contrasts the twTrade ReviewWhile thoroughly aware of conventional New Testament scholarship, this author brings a challenging and intensely interesting Muslim perspective to the Apostle Paul’s claim that Christ brings freedom from religious law. Skilfully drawing out themes that unite and divide members of three monotheistic religions, this commentary is remarkable, provocative, and essential reading.Paul S. Fiddes, Professor of Systematic Theology, University of OxfordThis is an extremely interesting, and very important, book. Paul’s Letter to the Galatians, with its insistence that the Galatian followers of Jesus do not need to be circumcised, is an absolutely central text for understanding the evolution of Christianity as a tradition of faith distinct from its Jewish ancestor, and this is, to the best of my knowledge, the first time that a Muslim writer has wrestled with it in as much detail as Dr. Akhtar has; he is very much to be congratulated for doing so with such thoroughness, and the Oxford Centre for Muslim-Christian Studies is also to be commended for providing the environment within which he has been enabled to do so.Hugh Goddard, University of Edinburgh Reviewed for The Centre for Muslim-Christian Studies, Oxford Table of ContentsIntroduction 1. Cambridge University Press The Bridegroom Messiah and the People of God Marriage in the Fourth Gospel THE BRIDEGROOM MESSIAH AND THE PEOPLE OF GOD MARRIAGE IN THE FOURTH GOSPEL By McWhirter Jocelyn Author Nov012008 Paperback
Book SynopsisMany interpreters of the Fourth Gospel detect allusions to biblical texts about marriage, but none offers a comprehensive analysis of these proposed allusions or a convincing explanation for their presence. Building on the work of Richard Hays, Donald Juel and Craig Koester, in this 2006 book Jocelyn McWhirter argues that John alludes to biblical texts about marriage in order to develop a metaphor for Jesus and how he relates to his followers. According to McWhirter, John chooses these texts because he uses a first-century exegetical convention to interpret them as messianic prophecies in light of an accepted messianic text. Specifically, he uses verbal parallels to link them to Psalm 45, a wedding song for God's anointed king. He then draws on them to portray Jesus as a bridegroom-Messiah and to depict Jesus' relationship with his followers in terms of marriage.Table of Contents1. Allusions to biblical texts about marriage; 2. Echoes of scripture, representative figures, and messianic exegesis; 3. The revelation of the bridegroom-Messiah allusions to Jeremiah 33:10–11 and Genesis 29:1–20; 4. The glorification of the bridegroom-Messiah allusions to Song of Songs 1:12 and Song of Songs 3:1–4; 5. The bridegroom-Messiah of Psalm 45 in the Song of Songs, Jeremiah 33:11 and Genesis 29:1–20; 6. Hearing the echoes; 7. Conclusion.
