  • The New Testament in its Ritual World

Taylor & Francis Ltd The New Testament in its Ritual World

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisWhat was life like among the first Christians? For the last thirty years, scholars have explored the historical and social contexts of the New Testament in order to sharpen their understanding of the text itself. This interest has led scholars to focus more and more on the social features of early Christian communities and less on their theologies or doctrines. Scholars are keen to understand what these communities were like, but the ritual life of early Christians remains largely unexplored. Studies of baptism and eucharist do exist, but they are very traditional, showing little awareness of the ritual world, let alone the broader social environment, in which Christians found themselves. Such studies make little or no use of the social sciences, Roman social history, or the archaeological record. This book argues that ritual was central to, and definitive for, early Christian life (as it is for all social orders), and explores the New Testament through a ritual lens. Trade Review'This valuable work forces New Testament scholars to give more attention to the neglected ritual world of the New Testament.’ – V. Henry T. Nguyen, Loyola Marymount University, USA'This is a brief and much-needed introduction to a neglected aspect of early Christianity and its environment ...The challenge to protestant and rationalist assumptions in reading the New Testament is clear, and the contribution of this book to opening the way to further insights into early Christianity will undoubtedly prove significant.' – Journal for the Study of the New Testament'Both accessible and invigorating, DeMaris' book will no doubt be hailed as a tour de force in the social-scientific understanding of early Christian ritual and practice.' – Theology‘Both accessible and invigorating, DeMaris' book will no doubt be hailed as a tour de force in the social-scientific understanding of early Christian ritual and practice’ - TheologyTable of ContentsAcknowledgements Abbreviations Introduction: Ritual Studies and the New Testament Part One Entry Rites: 1. Book SynopsisThis Guide surveys the more important historical, socio-cultural, theological, and literary factors we must grapple with in understanding the two letters of Jude and Second Peter, between which there are very strong similarities. It appears that the letter of Jude was almost entirely plagiarized' by the letter of Second Peter. George Aicheles main approach is the method of semiotics, examining signifying mechanisms in each of the texts both independently and when they are read together. In both of the letters, Jesus Christ is called the master', with a Greek word that means slave-owner', and the authors of both books refer to themselves and other Christians as the slaves of Christ. Furthermore, both writings report situations of paranoid fear within Christian communities of their time as they picture heretical infiltrators who threaten to pervert and perhaps even destroy the community. In addition to this, in an adventurous excursion, the letter of Jude is read intertextually with tTable of ContentsPreface: The View from Mars 1. Book SynopsisThe Accountable Animal: Justice, Justification, and Judgement offers a theological meditation on the human being as an accountable animal. Brendan Case introduces the idea of accountability, not merely as a structural feature of human institutions, but as a disposition to submit to rightly-constituted authority, whether divine or human. He relates this conception of accountability to the key themes of justice, justification, and judgment.Trade ReviewCase’s argument here is not only extremely well made, and more than compelling, but something of a model for how a philosophical theologian should go about concentrating on a single question and pursuing the correct answer along every possible logical and hermeneutical path. -- David Bentley Hart, Former Fellow, Notre Dame Institute for Advanced Study, USABeautifully written, profoundly engaging, and theologically sophisticated, The Accountable Animal is a joy to read. Throughout, a penetrating argument is constructed for why accountability defines what it means to be human. Giving fresh attention to this neglected topic, Case offers a groundbreaking contribution not only to theological anthropology and ethics but to theology as a whole. -- Dr Andrew Torrance, Senior Lecturer in Theology, University of St. Andrews, UKBrendan Case's The Accountable Animal is a richly suggestive, genuine work of theology, combining speculative verve and thoughtful engagement with Scripture. -- Nathan Eubank, Associate Professor of New Testament, University of Notre Dame, USATable of ContentsIntroduction "Those with Promises to Keep" Chapter 1 "Rendering to Each His Right": Accountability as a Sub-Type of Justice Chapter 2 “You Judge Each according to his Ways”: Ezekiel on Human Obedience, the Killing Letter, and the Life-Giving Spirit Chapter 3 “The Doers of the Law Will Be Justified”: Resolving a Pauline Dilemma Chapter 4 Christ as Adam’s Righteousness: Edenic Justification as a Reason for the Incarnation Chapter 5 Family, Polity, Church: Corporate Persons and the Origins of Accountability Chapter 6 Fiery Furnaces and Final Farthings: Purgatory and the Problem of Postmortem Accountability Chapter 7 On the Varieties of Infernalist Experience: Accountability in Everlasting, Annihilationist, and Purgatorial Hells Conclusion: What's Next? Bloomsbury Publishing PLC Matthews Account of the Massacre of the Innocents

Book SynopsisSung Cho addresses the seeming contradiction of Herod the Great's massacre in Matthew 2:16-18, questioning why such a tragedy had to occur, why it was included in the good news of Jesus, and what connection it has to ancient prophecies. In creating a reception history of the Massacre of the Innocents, Cho progresses through two millennia worth of interpretation and depiction to highlight key works for discussion. Beginning with a close reading of Matthew 2:16-18, Cho moves to analyse depictions of the tragedy in the Early Patristic Tradition, from the sixth century to the early modern period, and thus to the present day; complete with an examination of visual interpretations of the massacre. Cho''s examination provides a positive step to understanding the depths of human suffering with the help of many diverse perspectives.Trade ReviewAn intriguing and well-informed study. * Religious Studies Review *Table of ContentsPreface Acknowledgments Abbreviations 1. Book Synopsis"In the pursuit of an understanding of Mary that is undertaken in this book, it is clear that we are dealing with events beyond the reach of our normal faculties. Without effort on our part and help of some kind, Mary remains one more unsolvable mystery. In the activity of our striving to be open and reverent in our devoted pursuit of knowledge of these mysteries, we begin to tread the path of the Marian Way of Heart Knowledge."-- from the ForewordThe Marian Way of Heart Knowledge guides the reader into and through the mystery of Mary as she appears in the New Testament, especially her composure and openness to life --- both its gifts and its sorrows. Reilly argues that these holy mysteries are not allegory, poetry, or simple fantasy. Rather, they are facts that can be known and experienced by everyone. This book also draws upon the wisdom of Rudolf Steiner as shared in The Philosophy of Freedom, arguing that it is possible for knowledge itself to become organically alive. This is an inspiring book which reveals how devotion and thinking with the heart -- the Marian way of heart knowing -- can guide us on our path toward true freedom.

Equinox Publishing Ltd Social and Cognitive Perspectives on the Sermon

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisSocial and Cognitive Perspectives on the Sermon on the Mount offers fresh readings of themes and individual sayings in the Sermon on the Mount (SM) using socio-cognitive approaches. Because these approaches are invested in patterns of human cognition and social mechanisms, the resulting collection highlights the persistent appeal and persuasiveness of the SM: from innate moral drives, to the biology of emotion and risk-taking, to the formation and obliteration of in-group/out-group distinctions. Through these theories the authors show why--even across cultures and history--the SM continues to grip both individual minds and groups of people in order to shape moral communities. Classical historical-critical readings interpret the sermon according to the conventions of literature, seeking a relationship to other texts and ideas. By contrast our volume explores the SM not so much for the logical and historical relationships to other literary traditions, but also--and perhaps more importantly--for the ways it stimulates emotional, biologically, culturally habituated, evolutionarily preconditioned, and socially sanctioned characteristics of humans. In short, the volume shines a light on the action-inducing properties of the text. The volume will introduce a broader group of scholars, students, and clergy to the relevance of social scientific and cognitive studies for interpretation of the Bible, by applying these approaches to possibly the most read and discussed text in the Bible.Table of Contents1. Equinox Publishing Ltd An Embodied Reading of the Shepherd of Hermas:

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisThe Shepherd of Hermas (70-150 CE) is one of the oldest Christian works from a major urban center. While the majority of manuscript evidence of the Shepherd is concentrated in North Africa, the work has long-standing association with the city of Rome. It consists of three major sections: the Book of Visions, the Mandates, and the Similitudes. The Shepherd was enormously popular during the early centuries as a catechetical text used for moral formation. Its manuscript evidence during the early centuries far exceeded that of the Gospels. This book uses cognitive literary theory, specifically the approach known as enactive reading, to investigate why a work that was exceedingly popular among readers in antiquity has failed to receive the same reception by modern scholars. The study focuses on the first section of the Shepherd known as the Book of Visions, which narrates Hermas's visionary experiences in first-person voice. The book argues that enactive reading can help to generate immersive experiences of Hermas's visions and explain the success and appeal of the Book of Visions among ancient readers. Cognitive approaches also highlight how modern scholars trained to read apocalypses 'against the grain' to search for historical or theological information fail to notice and appreciate the very things that made apocalypses engaging and entertaining to a broad range of ancient readers and hearers.Table of ContentsIntroduction: Seeing the Shepherd of Hermas with New Eyes Chapter 1. Book SynopsisA sequel to Word of Mouth by Janet Lees The purpose of the gospel is to change things and the change it offers is from death to life. Many people will be familiar with the gospel in written form but not everyone uses written versions of the gospel all of the time. Alongside the written Bible, ordinary people often use oral or remembered versions. This book is about the why, how, when, where and what of remembering the gospel. Altogether it presents a companion to remembering the One - Jesus, the Life Giver - whose gospel it is. Tell Me the Stories of Jesus is based on work done with many groups of different sizes and ages and cultures. The examples are set out here to encourage other groups to 'just go for it': remember and by remembering share life and build community. This companion to the remembered gospel aims to encourage and support those who want to work with this process with ordinary people in any place. Janet Lees, a speech therapist and an ordained minister of the United Reformed Church, has been developing the remembered Bible method for over 15 years, with ordinary people of all ages and abilities in Yorkshire and around the UK.
