Book SynopsisThe place of the Law and its relationship to religious observance and faith is a contested topic in the study of both the Old and New Testament. In Law and Religion, members of the Erhardt Seminar group provide an insight into the debate, probing key topics and offering new contributions to the subject. Their essays are grouped into three sections, focussing in turn on the Law''s place in Israelite religion, in the Jesus tradition, and in Paul and the Apostolic tradition. Thus, the foundation of the connection between law and religion in ancient Israel is explored, along with the decisive influence of the Deuteronomic reform and the radical new understanding now emerging of the later development in Judaism of the New Testament Period. So, also, the contemporary challenge to the conventional picture of Jesus and the Law is addressed, the attitude of Paul is shown in new light, and post-Pauline developments are examined. Readers will find in this symposium a refreshing breadth of opinionTrade Review'This is a most important collection which will be significant for biblical ethics as well as for the narrower questions of law, and deserves to be widely known' - Expository Times 'These essays. touch on three areas which are in the centre of scholarly debate at present, and together make a useful contribution to all three' - Morna D. Hooker, in Epworth Review 'It can be said that none of these thirteen papers is second rate, many are lively and original, and all are highly informative.' - P.S. Cameron, in Scottish Journal of Theology 'New light is shed especially on the Jewish context of Jesus' ministry, but there is valuable work on the Old Testament, Qumran, John, Paul and Luke-Acts. A theme common to most of the book is the varied ways in which law might be understood, and the need to suspect simple interpretations. Of interest to graduate students and specialists, but also useful to ministers, undergraduates and intelligent college students.' - Walter Houston, in Theological Book ReviewTable of ContentsAbbreviations Introduction Part I. SCM Press Reading Romans Backwards A Gospel in Search of

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisAs Paul's Epistle to the Romans comes to an end in Chapters 12-16, we are offered fascinating insights into the everyday life of the church to whom Paul writes, and essential contextual details which shed light on the rest of the epistle. But the rest of the letter is so notoriously dense that these vital details are often missed, and the earlier chapters are read is if they were merely written for theology lecturers to expound rather than for the local church to ingest. In Reading Romans Backwards, renowned New Testament scholar Scot McKnight demonstrates that fresh light can be thrown on Chapters 1-11 by first taking a deep look at Chapters 12-16.Reading the letter in this new way, McKnight explores how Romans offers a message of deep reconciliation and living in fellowship as siblings a message of vital relevance to today's church. Trade Review"Anyone who begins reading Romans at chapter 1 verse 1 may be forgiven for allowing their attention to slip by the time they have reached chapter 16. In this important reading of Romans Scott McKnight offers a different way of looking at the letter - starting at the end, with the lived experience of those to whom Paul writes, and working backwards. It is a fascinating exploration of this most important letter and brings it to life in new ways. Highly recommended!" -- Paula Gooder“Two things stand out from this fresh, creative reading of Paul’s greatest letter. Scot McKnight is a historian who grounds his exposition in messy, on-the-ground, first-century reality; and he loves the church and longs to see it attending not just to abstract theories about salvation but to the practical questions of how to embody the gospel in actual communities. Thus, whether or not you agree with all his interpretations, this book will compel all of us to think afresh about how Paul’s vivid theology challenges our often sleepy discipleship.” -- NT Wright"When you are axle-deep in mud, backward is the only way forward. McKnight lifts, spins, and energetically pushes in a new direction. Hang on tight. The church and academy are careening down an adventurous new path." -- Matthew W. Bates"To read Romans backwards with Scot McKnight is to experience the epistle as a pastoral intervention directed toward believing communities under stress. Read backwards, Paul’s great insights concerning justification, grace, and faithfulness reveal themselves not as doctrines received from the sky but as Paul’s active work as a missionary theologian. Accessible to students and pastors, this book will provoke scholars to examine our assumptions about Romans as well." -- Greg Carey

Book SynopsisBook five of Eugene Peterson''s landmark SPIRITUAL THEOLOGY series: foundational reading for the twenty-first-century church. Continuing Peterson''s evaluation of contemporary Christian spirituality, PRACTISE RESURRECTION is a study of the book of Ephesians. It is often thought to be Paul''s most difficult letter, but has been for over thirty years Peterson''s text for his identity as a pastor. Peterson points out that although Christians emphasise the importance of new birth, growth is equally important. This book is a conversation on spiritual formation and what it means to become a mature Christian. As with the first four books in this series, PRACTISE RESURRECTION is written for both lay and academic audiences. Challenging but deeply rewarding, it combines scholarship with the human experience and lightness of touch for which Peterson is known. Also available in the Spiritual Theology series: Christ Plays in Ten Thousand Places, Eat This Book, TheTrade Review'A tour de force in spiritual theology, combining incisive cultural analysis and biblical exposition with a sweeping and engaging vision of the Christian life' (for CHRIST PLAYS IN TEN THOUSAND PLACES) * Christianity Today *'Deep, stirring, luminous, even profound - if you are going to read one book about reading Scripture, it should be this one.' Book SynopsisMatthew was a tax collector, a disgrace to his people. But Jesus, in his grace, called him to be a disciple and to write a book about him for his own people, the Jews. The central theme of Matthew is two–fold: Jesus is the fulfilment of the promises in the Hebrew Scriptures and Jesus is the Messiah. John D. Hannah’s valuable contribution to the Focus on the Bible series is a layman’s commentary to this crucial book. Moving through the book, he shows how Matthew records the claims of Jesus to be King, and the rejection of Jesus as King.Trade Review… an admirably concise and insightful exposition of Matthew’s Gospel. Providing his reader with clear and helpful charts and with thoughtful questions for reflection, Dr. Hannah helps his audience to understand, digest, and apply Matthew’s message. -- Guy Prentiss Waters (James M. Baird, Jr. Professor of New Testament, Reformed Theological Seminary, Jackson, Mississippi)Hannah lets his theology and big picture of the Bible guide his exegesis in the best way. Oxford University Press Inc The Jewish Annotated New Testament

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisFirst published in 2011, The Jewish Annotated New Testament was a groundbreaking work, bringing the New Testament''s Jewish background to the attention of students, clergy, and general readers. In this new edition, eighty Jewish scholars bring together unparalleled scholarship to shed new light on the text. This thoroughly revised and greatly expanded second edition brings even more helpful information and new insights to the study of the New Testament. Introductions to each New Testament book, containing guidance for reading and specific information about how the book relates to the Judaism of the period, have been revised and augmented, and in some cases newly written. Annotations on the text--some revised, some new to this edition--provide verse-by-verse commentary. The thirty essays from the first edition are thoroughly updated, and there are twenty-four new essays, on topics such as Mary in Jewish Tradition,, Christology, and Messianic Judaism. For Christian readers The Jewish Annotated New Testament offers a window into the first-century world of Judaism from which the New Testament springs. There are explanations of Jewish concepts such as food laws and rabbinic argumentation. It also provides a much-needed corrective to many centuries of Christian misunderstandings of the Jewish religion. For Jewish readers, this volume provides the chance to encounter the New Testament--a text of vast importance in Western European and American culture--with no religious agenda and with guidance from Jewish experts in theology, history, and Jewish and Christian thought. It also explains Christian practices, such as the Eucharist. The Jewish Annotated New Testament, Second Edition is an essential volume that places the New Testament writings in a context that will enlighten readers of any faith or none.Trade ReviewThis annotated version of their New Testament forces Christian readers to rethink some of their perceptions about New Testament texts, together with their presuppositions and prejudices. All those who teach the New Testament and who preach from its pages would do well to ponder Amy-Jill Levine's survey, Bearing False Witness: Common Errors Made about Early Judaism. * Christoph Stenschke, Neotestamentica *Any reader who wishes to study the text of the New Testament from a scholarly perspective will find plenty of engaging, illuminating readings guaranteed to make it worth their while...Highly recommended. * Jenny Webb, Association for Mormon Letters *Praise for the first edition: "A magnificent achievement... The Jewish Annotated New Testament is a marvelously bounteous compilation." * Commonweal *An admirable piece of scholarship... Much contemporary writing on Scripture is faddish or tendentious. This is soul-nourishing and highly recommended'' Ben Witherington III, author of A Week in the Life of CorinthIn this wise and thoughtful book, Father James Martin, SJ, analyses the miracle of Lazarus's resurrection and asks us to consider what Jesus means when he calls Lazarus and each of us to ''come forth''. Taking us through the Gospel story verse by verse, he offers deep reflection on the lessons it holds about love, family, sadness, frustration, fear, anger, freedom and joy.Come Forth combines compelling analysis of the biblical text, insights about the historical setting of the story, meditations on Lazarus in art and the larger culture, as well as stories of Martin's personal experiences. Book SynopsisJoan E. Taylor is Professor of Christian Origins and Second Temple Judaism at King's College London, UK.Trade ReviewEditor Joan Taylor’s coterie of merry scholars does justice to the serendipitous meeting of Jesus and Brian … Several essays sparkle with almost divine panache. * Journal of the American Academy of Religion *I was astonished when I heard there was to be a conference where proper New Testament scholars would be discussing what they had learnt from Life of Brian! This is the result. Fascinating... * John Cleese *Taken as a whole, the essays form a complete analytical documentation of the Life of Brian, and very interesting they are too! They take various angles and look at the film from not just a filmic one but from a historical point of view, and read many things I had not noticed at the time. The comparisons are always illuminating, and the commentaries always right on the nose. * Terry Jones, Monty Python *[T]his delightful edited collection ... is something of a labour of love for its editor Joan E. Taylor and the other contributors who managed to procure the involvement of two of the original Pythons, John Cleese and Terry Jones, to talk about the influence and reception of the film. * Theology Journal *[The book] contains 16 papers from a distinguished group of international biblical scholars ... One cannot do justice to the breadth of the contributors' papers. * Church Times *This diverse colleciton showcases the many ways a particular biblical film can direct our attention back to ancient texts and contexts with greater insight and critical awareness. This book is essential reading for anyone interested in the Gospels, historical Jesus research, or biblical films. While reception analysis is emerging as a recognized sub-discipline of biblical studies worthy of pursuit in its own right, many still ask whether it can provide an exegetical pay off. This book responds affirmatively, as each author poses and attempts to answer the (adapted) question of "Reg" the Judean freedom fighter: "What have the Pythons [indeed, what has reception exegesis] done for us?" * Rhonda Burnette-Bletsch, Eastern University, USA *[CC] This is not the silly book the title suggests it is. Rather, it is a serious (but not too serious) exploration of the Pythons' classic comedy Life of Brian vis-à-vis the historical Jesus and his Sitz im Leben. Emanating from the Jesus and Brian Conference held at King’s College London (2014), the book is a great read for admirers of the Pythons in general and of the film in particular and for serious (but not too serious) New Testament scholars. The lectures-turned-essays are organized into two parts: ‘The Film in Its Cinematic Context, Its Reception, and Its Challenges’ and ‘History and Interpretation via Monty Python’s Life of Brian.’ Both are interesting and at times fascinating. The first offers a glimpse of the movie before, while, and after it was made and released; the second gives readers a glimpse of the times in which Jesus lived. The book covers a potpourri of topics and offers much valuable scholarship. Both film students and students of the historical Jesus will find much to commend in this book. Summing Up: Highly recommended. Lower-division undergraduates through faculty. -- W. J. Pankey, William Rainey Harper College, USA * CHOICE *This book is a great read for anyone interested in Monty Python's classic Life of Brian and the almost equally exciting world of biblical, early Jewish and Christian studies. Like undoubtedly many other colleagues I have used various scenes from the film in my classes on ancient Jewish religion and culture. I have learned a great deal of new things from the book. This book will now be mandatory reading for students. Catering to the needs of students of the biblical past, most chapters deal with ancient history and interpretation via the movie. The contributors write with humour and also very profound knowledge of ancient history, texts and contexts. In doing so, they often challenge the reader to go beyond some of the cliches surrounding the movie's understanding. And it's good to know that the Pythons got Pilate's dress right. * Mladen Popovic, University of Groningen, The Netherlands *These are very serious essays, well researched and carefully written. -- Dianne Bergant * Bible Today *A cracking good read. -- George HunkaClearly any text concerning Life of Brian will supply humor scholars with fruitful material, since the film is the holy grail (pun intended) for those seeking to link religion with humor, and this book will afford them many constructive ideas and critiques within a set of essays that are an accessible and valuable resource, demonstrating at the same time the role of history in the study of humor. Additionally, it concludes with a detailed bibliography of Life of Brian scholarship useful to anyone looking to research the film or Monty Python in general. * Humor: International Journal of Humor Research *Table of ContentsList of Authors List of Abbreviations List of Illustrations Preface: Terry Jones Foreword: Paul Joyce Introduction: Jesus and Brian: the Conference and the Book Joan E. Christian Focus Publications Ltd Luke 14–24: On the Road to Jerusalem

Book SynopsisThis layman’s commentary on the gospel of Luke will encourage you to take a fresh look at what can feel like a very familiar book. Let Dale Ralph Davis to guide you through Luke’s investigation into the man Jesus, who has come to seek and to save the lost. Following on from volume one, this book picks up at the beginning of chapter 14 and includes a number of Jesus’ parables, as well as his crucifixion and resurrection.Trade ReviewBrimming with insightful exegesis, theological depth, vivid illustration and pastoral application, these two volumes are vintage Dale Ralph Davis. Whether you use them in personal devotion, or a small group, or as a preacher seeking to teach your congregation, this engaging journey through Luke’s gospel will be a very useful and edifying guide. -- Reuben Hunter (Pastor, Trinity West Church, London)… here is a scholar (he is a ninja in the original languages) and a convicted pastor and a winsome believer. In Dr. Davis’ Luke exposition, your eye is drawn to authorial intent and your heart is drawn to the matchlessness of Christ. -- Austin T. Duncan (Professor of Pastoral Ministries, Director of D.Min Studies, Director, The MacArthur Center for Expository Preaching, The Master’s Seminary, Los Angeles, California)This pithy and well–informed exposition is a delight to dig through. It concisely and creatively opens up Luke’s Gospel … Most significantly, the character and brilliance of Jesus shine forth. Readers at all levels will deepen in their knowledge and devotion to him through the wisdom that abounds in these pages. -- Robert W. Yarbrough (Professor of New Testament, Covenant Theological Seminary, St. Louis, Missouri)Davis not only informs your mind (helpful technical footnotes are included on the bottom of the pages); he feeds your soul, fills your heart, and moves you to praise and thank God for the one who came to seek and to save the lost (Luke 17:10). -- Steve Jussely (Senior Pastor, Lakeland Presbyterian Church (PCA), Flowood, Mississippi and Former Adjunct Professor of Homiletics, Reformed Theological Seminary)… Davis’s exposition of Luke is so winsome, wise, and illuminating that I found it hard to put down. His pastoral application with stories and illustrations is nothing short of brilliant. Read the exposition, meditate and pray on what you read, and encounter Jesus Christ. -- Thomas R. Schreiner (James Buchanan Harrison Professor of New Testament Interpretation and Associate Dean, The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, Louisville, Kentucky)Written with Dale Ralph Davis’ usual clarity, humour and warmth, these volumes will not only serve as a sure guide to help readers understand Luke’s Gospel but will strengthen them in their faith in the Jesus about whom Luke writes. -- Peter Orr (Lecturer in New Testament, Moore Theological College, Sydney)

Book SynopsisThe New Testament writings reflect a sense of wrestling to understand what the world-shattering events of Jesus''s life, death, resurrection, and ascension mean in the rough-and-tumble of daily life in a conflicted world. In this book, a senior New Testament scholar investigates seven critical areas of tension--historical, moral, political, material, social, perceptual, and temporal--that shape the 'big ideas' discussed and debated in the New Testament. This lively investigation explores the challenges that influenced the New Testament writings and how the writers responded to those tensions. The author shows that out of this upheaval came a remarkable set of creative, dynamic writings that have shaped and challenged millions of lives as sacred Scripture. This accessibly written book offers a fresh way to learn about the world and content of the New Testament writings. It will help readers appreciate the rich diversity of New Testament thought cohering around commitme

Book SynopsisHow did the Apostle Paul view the Church? And where does Israel fit in? How are the promises to Israel fulfilled? In Heirs of Promise, P. Chase Sears discusses this relationship between the Church and Israel, and he explains how that affects our understanding of the Old Testament.Using a biblical-theological approach to the book of Romans, Sears argues that Paul understood the church not as a replacement of Israel, but as the new Israel--the continuation of Israel reconstituted in Christ. And Jesus, as the Son of God, is the true Israel who fulfills all of God's purposes for Israel and creation. Sears shows how the Old Testament promises to Israel are being fulfilled in the Church.Trade ReviewChase Sears demonstrates in a study of Romans, one which draws on the Old Testament witness, that the Church is identified as the new Israel in Paul. Such a conclusion does not rule out a future salvation of ethnic Israel. Here is a careful study of a theological topic informed by and rooted in careful exegesis. At the same time, Sears' work displays a keen understanding of redemptive history. I commend this work with enthusiasm.--Thomas R. Schreiner, James Buchanan Harrison Professor of New Testament Interpretation at The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, author of Romans in the Baker Exegetical Commentary Series on the New Testament

Book SynopsisThis superlative translation by noted scholar and theologian R. H. Charles is one of the best and most complete available. Along with the renowned translation by R. H. Charles, this edition includes two introductions. One by noted esoteric scholar and antiquarian bookseller R. A. Gilbert, who helps readers understand the historical context of The Book of Enoch and dispels many of the myths dubious interpretations previously attributed to it. The other by Lon Milo DuQuette, an expert on mysticism and the occult spiritual literature. The vision of the Apocalypse portrayed in The Book of Enoch takes a very different view from that of Western Christians, although it is part of the biblical canon for Ethiopian and Eritrean Christians. According to Enoch, the wicked shall be cast out and the good will realize a literal heaven on Earth. The prophecies also contain the lost "Book of Noah," early references to a messiah as "Christ," and an accounting of the angels and subsequent creation of demons.

Book SynopsisFor many readers of the Bible, the book of Revelation is a riddle that fascinates and frustrates. Scholars and teachers have proposed different keys to its interpretation, including the ‘futurist’ and historical-critical approaches. However, none of these adequately demonstrates the continuing, vital relevance of the Apocalypse to the contemporary church. Brian Tabb stresses the importance of the canonical context of the book of Revelation and argues that it presents itself as the climax of biblical prophecy. He shows how various Old Testament prophecies and patterns find their consummation in the present and future reign of Jesus Christ, who decisively defeats his foes, saves his people and restores all things. Tabb considers key biblical-theological themes: the triune God; Christ’s followers and foes; God’s plan for salvation, judgment and restoration; and God’s word. He also explores how the book’s symbolic visions shape believers’ worldviews in accordance with what is true, good and beautiful according to God’s revealed standards. These visions motivate them to live obediently and counter-culturally in the world as faithful witnesses to Jesus.Trade ReviewNot only does [Dr Tabb] write with clarity and deceptive simplicity, but what he writes will prove enduring. He belongs to that biblical-theological school which, without forcing the evidence, eagerly probes how the trajectories of Scripture come together in Scripture's last book. As Richard Bauckham has taught us, the Book of Revelation is the very culmination of prophecy -- and Dr Tabb is eager to work this out. In a book like Revelation, full of symbols that have little resonance with our world, Dr Tabb brings them to life once again. And he does this in a context that ties the themes of the book to some foundational Christian convictions. Take, and read. * D. A. Carson *
