Neurology and clinical neurophysiology Books
Springer International Publishing AG Neonatal Cranial Ultrasonography
Book SynopsisThis book clearly explains the basics of cranial ultrasonography in the neonate, from patient preparation through to screening strategies and the classification of abnormalities. The aim is to enable the reader consistently to obtain images of the highest quality and to interpret them correctly. Essential information is provided both on the procedure itself and on the normal ultrasound anatomy. The standard technique is described and illustrated, and emphasis is placed on the value of supplementary acoustic windows. Attention is also drawn to maturational changes in the neonatal brain and to the limitations of cranial ultrasonography. Frequently occurring abnormalities are described and classifications for these abnormalities are provided. A new classification for neonatal cerebellar hemorrhages is introduced. In this third edition, all ultrasound images have beena replaced, reflecting the improvements in image quality. An entirely new chapter is devoted to Doppler ultrasonography. The illustrations have been improved and new illustrations were added. The reader will have access to highly informative videos on the cranial ultrasound procedure, available online via SpringerLink. The compact design of the book makes it an ideal and handy reference that will guide the novice in understanding the essentials of the technique while also providing useful information for the more experienced practitioner.Trade Review“The purpose is to teach clinicians about the techniques and findings of neonatal cranial ultrasound as a diagnostic tool for neonatal brain pathology. The goal is to help readers obtain the best images and then interpret them correctly. The anatomy of the brain is well depicted for novices and the features of each anatomic structure are shown in well-done illustrations according to the transducer's plane and acoustic window. The book is aimed at technicians, trainees, and readers of ultrasound examinations.” (Jay P. Goldsmith, Doody's Book Reviews, June 14, 2019) Table of ContentsPART I: The Cranial Ultrasound Procedure: Cranial Ultrasonography: Advantages.- Cranial Ultrasonography: Technical Aspects.- Performing Cranial Ultrasound Examinations.- Assessing Cranial Ultrasound Examinations.- Scoring Systems.- Limitations of Cranial Ultrasonography and Recommendations for MRI.- Maturational Changes of the Neonatal Brain.- Summary.- PART II: Ultrasound Anatomy of the Neonatal Brain: Coronal Planes.- Sagittal Planes.- Posterior Fontanel.- Temporal Window.- Mastoid Fontanel.

Springer-Verlag Berlin and Heidelberg GmbH & Co. KG Neurological Disorders
Book SynopsisNeurological Disorders is the latest and fifth monograph in the series on management and treatment in major clinical specialties or patient groups. Each book is complete in'its own right and has been prepared by practising physicians with an interest in treatment and management, together with scientists involved in clinical research. The volumes are intended to fill a gap between standard textbooks of medicine and therapeutics and research reviews, symposia and original articles in superspecialist fields. It is the aim of the series to give authoritative up-to-date advice on treatment and management which will be of use to both specialists and nonspecialists and to allow recent advances in pathophysiol ogy and developments in treatment to be viewed in the context of contemporary clinical practice. The approach is intentionally by the minimum number didactic. Each volume has been written of authors to ensure a degree of continuity and uniformity of style. The first four volumes dealt respectively with gastrointestinal diseases, rheumatic diseases, treatment in the elderly and car diovascular disease. The present volume covers neurological diseases. Chapter 1 is an introduction to drugs and the nervous system. It reviews the chemical basis of neurotransmission and mechanisms of drug action in neurological disease. There follows a series of chapters discussing patient management in general and drug treatment in particular in common neurological problems presen ting in general medical practice. These include headache, cerebral vascular disease, epilepsy and the movement disorders.Table of Contents1 Drugs and the Nervous System.- 2 Headache, Pain and Raised Intracranial Pressure.- 3 Prevention and Treatment of Cerebrovascular Disease.- 4 Epilepsy.- 5 Treatment of Movement Disorders.- 6 Drag Treatment of Infections of the Nervous System.- 7 Disorders of Sleep and Wakefulness.- 8 Immunosuppressant and Cytotoxic Drugs, Toxic and Metabolic Disorders.- 9 Treatment of Diseases of Nerve and Muscle.- 10 Treatment of Disorders Involving the Autonomic Nervous System.- 11 Drugs in Neuroendocrinology.- 12 Vitamins and the Nervous System.

Springer-Verlag Berlin and Heidelberg GmbH & Co. KG Clinical Vascular Anatomy and Variations
Book SynopsisThe first volume of this second edition of Surgical Neuroangiography contains the previous volumes 1 and 3 in one book. The edited and updated text provides a practical understanding of the challenges that face the modern management of vascular diseases. Additional 3-D angiographic photographs as well as new illustrations complete this classic book of vascular disease management in adults and children. The authors, Pierre Lasjaunias, Alex Berenstein, and Karel ter Brugge are highly committed to both research and teaching . This second edition is a prerequisite for anybody wishing to fully understand clinical challenges and vascular intervention.Trade ReviewFrom the reviews of the second edition: "The authors have produced an easy-to-read text and high-quality illustrative examples … . The book’s greatest value is its integration of the understanding of the function underlying the morphological description. … One could not think of a neuroradiologist who would not find this reference to be useful, or a practising physician who would not benefit from having the anatomical information and clinical significance. I recommend this book in the highest possible terms." (J.-L. Dumas, Surgical Radiologic Anatomy, Vol. 26 (1), 2004) "In this book the vascular anatomy with its many variations is described in a detailed, but very elegant and fascinating way. It has a provocative way of presentation by which the student is stimulated to think over and over again what has been read. … Lay-out, printing and illustrations, including many helpful schemes, are of high quality. The references and subject index are complete and accessible. This book is strongly advocated for all neuroscientists active in the field of vascular diseases … ." (D.A. Bosch, Clinical Neurology and Neurosurgery, Vol. 104 (2), 2002) "The long-awaited arrival of this book is a publishing event. … improved layout and often clearer legends for the figures do add to its readability. … I would recommend the purchase of the new volume, even if its predecessor is far from being redundant. In short, I love this stimulating erudite … book, ... what would I do without it? This book will be an important guide … and as such belongs in every neuroradiology department." (J. Bhattacharya, Neuroradiology, Vol. 44 (6), 2002)Table of Contents1 General Introduction.- 2 Spinal and Spinal Cord Arteries and Veins.- 3 Craniocervical Junction.- 4 Skull Base and Maxillofacial Region.- 5 The Skull Base and Extradural Arteries.- 6 Intradural Arteries.- 7 Intracranial Venous System.- References.

Springer-Verlag Berlin and Heidelberg GmbH & Co. KG Gesammelte Schriften zur Psychopathologie
Book SynopsisThis book is a knowledge-based text that covers the anatomy, neurophysiology, and neuropharmacology needed to carry out the necessary management and cerebrospinal protection during neuroanesthesia. Especially to make the subject of neuroanesthesia more approachable, we introduce surgical measures utilized in neurosurgery, cardiovascular surgery, neuromodulation, and related procedures. The main purpose of neuroanesthesia/neurocritical care is to deliver cerebrospinal protection in neurosurgical and cardiovascular surgeries. How should we select the best anesthetic management to prevent neurological complications for patients who, for instance, undergo different types of surgery for subarachnoid hemorrhage, stroke, head trauma, carotid endarterectomy, or cardiovascular surgery under cardiopulmonary bypass? These pathological conditions include the risk of transient cerebrospinal ischemia, and if our management is not precise, it may induce serious neurological sequelae. Although there is an urgent need to establish the treatment and elucidate the molecular mechanisms of cerebrospinal injury, many components are intertwined, making this a challenge we have not completely solved yet. This volume makes the management of neuroanesthesia more accessible not only for primary residents but also for specialists, providing a valuable resource on the current perspectives of neuroanesthesia.Trade Review“The textbook from Uchino and colleagues, Neuroanesthesia and Cerebrospinal Protection, is an effort to amalgamate the complex nature of the processes involved in a neurosurgical patient. … this book is a reasonable attempt at a current evidence-based textbook in neuroanesthesia directed toward residents and junior faculty alike. … there is a considerable emphasis on local Japanese content, the perspectives it brings make it a valuable addition to any departmental library.” (Nitin Ahuja, Canadian Journal of Anesthesia, Vol. 64, 2017)“Neuroanesthesia and Cerebrospinal Protection may serve as a broad overview for academicians, anesthesiology trainees, and all practitioners who regularly or less often encounter patients with neuronal injury and/or with high risk of that in neuro, cardiac, and vascular anesthesiology. Certainly, the book will find its place on the book shelves because such a starting point is indispensable to stimulate more widespread search for in-depth review of current literature on knowledge and research in central nervous system protection.” (Sabine Himmelseher and Eberhard F. Kochs, Anesthesia & Analgesia, Vol. 123 (4), October, 2016)“This overview of neuroanesthesia covers both basic science and clinical aspects. … The intended audience is in-training and postgraduate neuroanesthesiologists, and the book is written to suit everyone’s needs. … This book is very well written. … It’s easy on the eye and captivating, making reading it very pleasurable.” (Tariq M. Springer Verlag, Japan Neurodegenerative Disorders as Systemic Diseases
Book SynopsisThis book sheds new light on neurodegenerative disorders as systemic diseases. Classically, neuronal cell death was a hallmark of such disorders. However, it has become evident that neural dysfunction is more important in the pathophysiology of neurodegenerative disorders. More recently, the prionoid-spreading hypothesis of disease-causing molecules has attracted a great deal of attention. Therapeutic strategies thus must be reconsidered in the light that neurodegenerative disorders are indeed systemic diseases. The first part of this book introduces the concept of neurodegeneration in biology and pathophysiology. The second part focuses on clinical evaluation and biomarkers from the perspective of this new concept, while the third summarizes the risk factors of neurodegeneration. The fourth part of this work indicates future directions of treatment, and the final part discusses health promotion for prevention and quality of life. This book will be of interest to both researchers and medical personnel, and provides a fresh approach to neurodegenerative diseases, paving the way to new research and improved quality of health care for patients. The principle that an unde. rstanding of physiology can be based on the analysis of pathological states, and that, vice versa, an understanding of pathology cannot proceed without a clear formulation of the structure on normal physiological states formed the basis for the development of experimental medicine in France in the first half of the 19th century, and for the development of neuropsychology in the second half of the 19th century.Trade Review`Professor Caramazza is one of the few people who could collate this kind of book; firstly, because of the high quality of his work, and secondly, the collection offers a coherent statement of the central issues in neuropsychology.' Springer Dementia: A survey of the syndrome of dementia
Book SynopsisThree points must strike anyone who has embarked on a study of dementia over a period of time. Firstly, that our conception of the syndrome is in a state of flux. Gone, for instance, in the past decade or two, is the requirement of a chronic, progressive, irreversible disorder for the diag nosis. I remember the surgeon who, when I was a student, returned a referral saying he would operate on the man when his dementia got better. Feeling superior, and encouraged by the consultant psychiatrist, we students laughed a good deal at this. Before we finished clerking on that Unit a visiting Professor of Psychiatry had demonstrated the reversibility of the symptoms of dementia in a patient with a rare metabolic disorder. Perhaps ignorance is sometimes an advance on received wisdom. The lesson is the concept of dementia must always reflect the state of knowledge and is therefore in a sense ad hoc. Secondly, what the criteria for, and also who the arbiters of, the diagnosis might be is not always clear. It is traditional to think that expressing opinions and making diagnosis of mental illness is almost a civic right, i.e.Trade Review` about the 1st edition ` .. a delight to find a single author writing to a standard suitable for consultant psychiatrists, neurologists, and geriatricians.... Springer International Publishing AG Alzheimer’s Disease Research: What Has Guided
Book SynopsisThis book highlights the key phases and central findings of Alzheimer’s Disease research since the introduction of the label ‘Alzheimer’s Disease’ in 1910. The author, Christian Behl, puts dementia research in the context of the respective zeitgeist and summarizes the paths that have led to the currently available Alzheimer’s drugs. As the reader is taken through the major developments in Alzheimer's Disease research, particularly over the past thirty years, Behl poses critical questions: Why are the exact causes of Alzheimer's Disease still in the dark, despite all the immense, worldwide research efforts in academia as well as in the pharmaceutical industry? Why has the majority of an entire research field kept focusing on a single hypothesis that establishes the deposition of the amyloid beta peptide in the brain as the key trigger of Alzheimer's pathology, even though this concept has still not been convincingly proven in the clinics? Are there other hypotheses that might explain the pathogenesis of this complex brain disease, and if so, why were these perspectives not adequately followed? In this book, Behl tries to answer these questions. Starting with the historical background, the author illustrates the long and arduous research journey, its numerous setbacks, and the many alternative explanations for the disease, which have started gaining increasing attention and acceptance in the Alzheimer’s research community only more recently. With his deep dive into the history and progression of this research, including the most recent developments, Behl explains why he believes that it is high time to promote a paradigm shift in Alzheimer’s Disease research. The book is written for all researchers in the fields of neurobiology and neurodegeneration, as well as other biomedical fields, who would like to gain a broad and beyond the surface insight into (the key developments of) one of the most promoted research fields of our time. With its extensive literature references and over 100 illustrations, the book is also attractive for students and interested lay persons. Elaborating on all the different aspects and research approaches of this research field, the author aims to convince the reader that the underlying causes of Alzheimer’s Disease may be much more complex than previously thought and that this must be considered for future research directions. While he hopes that the Alzheimer’s research community is finally ready to shed its ‘amyloid-straitjacket’ that has hampered progress for too long, he is also convinced that a much-needed paradigm shift can guide future Alzheimer’s Disease research and provide a new and broader perspective on this age-dependent brain disease.Trade Review“This book ... represents a tour de force of almost 700 pages written by a leading contributor to the field over the last three decades, Christian Behl. ... The text is extremely thoroughly referenced, and the author describes his literature research process in detail.” (Anthony J. Turner, Journal of Neurochemistry, October 14, 2023)Table of Contents

HarperCollins Publishers Inc Bitten
Book SynopsisA riveting thriller reminiscent of The Hot Zone, this true story dives into the mystery surrounding one of the most controversial and misdiagnosed conditions of our time—Lyme disease—and of Willy Burgdorfer, the man who discovered the microbe behind it, revealing his secret role in developing bug-borne biological weapons, and raising terrifying questions about the genesis of the epidemic of tick-borne diseases affecting millions of Americans today. While on vacation on Martha’s Vineyard, Kris Newby was bitten by an unseen tick. That one bite changed her life forever, pulling her into the abyss of a devastating illness that took ten doctors to diagnose and years to recover: Newby had become one of the 300,000 Americans who are afflicted with Lyme disease each year.As a science writer, she was driven to understand why this disease is so misunderstood, and its patients so mistreated. This quest led her to Willy Burgdorfer, the Lyme microbe’s discoverer, who revealed that he had developed bug-borne bioweapons during the Cold War, and believed that the Lyme epidemic was started by a military experiment gone wrong. In a superb, meticulous work of narrative journalism, Bitten takes readers on a journey to investigate these claims, from biological weapons facilities to interviews with biosecurity experts and microbiologists doing cutting-edge research, all the while uncovering darker truths about Willy. It also leads her to uncomfortable questions about why Lyme can be so difficult to both diagnose and treat, and why the government is so reluctant to classify chronic Lyme as a disease.A gripping, infectious page-turner, Bitten will shed a terrifying new light on an epidemic that is exacting an incalculable toll on us, upending much of what we believe we know about it.

Springer-Verlag Berlin and Heidelberg GmbH & Co. KG The Human Central Nervous System: A Synopsis and
Book SynopsisThe present edition of The Human Central Nervous System differs considerably from its predecessors. In previous editions, the text was essentially confined to a section dealing with the various functional systems of the brain. This section, which has been rewritten and updated, is now preceded by 15 newly written chapters, which introduce the pictorial material of the gross anatomy, the blood vessels and meninges and the microstructure of its various parts and deal with the development, topography and functional anatomy of the spinal cord, the brain stem and the cerebellum, the diencephalon and the telencephalon. Great pains have been taken to cover the most recent concepts and data. As suggested by the front cover, there is a focus on the evolutionary development of the human brain. Throughout the text numerous correlations with neuropathology and clinical n- rology have been made. After much thought, we decided to replace the full Latin terminology, cherished in all previous editions, with English and Anglicized Latin terms. It has been an emotional farewell from beautiful terms such as decussatio hipposideriformis W- nekinkii and pontes grisei caudatolenticulares. Not only the text, but also the p- torial material has been extended and brought into harmony with the present state of knowledge. More than 230 new illustrations have been added and many others have been revised. The number of macroscopical sections through the brain has been extended considerably. Together, these illustrations now comprise a complete and convenient atlas for interpreting neuroimaging studies.Table of ContentsOrientation. Development. Gross anatomy. Oxford University Press Life Evolving
Book SynopsisIn just a half century, humanity has made an astounding leap in its understanding of life. Now, one of the giants of biological science, Christian de Duve, discusses what we''ve learned in this half century, ranging from the tiniest cells to the future of our species and of life itself. With wide-ranging erudition, de Duve takes us on a dazzling tour of the biological world, beginning with the invisible workings of the cell, the area in which he won his Nobel Prize. He describes how the first cells may have arisen and suggests that they may have been like the organisms that exist today near deep-sea hydrothermal vents. Contrary to many other scientists, he argues that life was bound to arise and that it probably only took millennia--maybe tens of thousands of years--to move from rough building blocks to the first organisms possessing the basic properties of life. With equal authority, De Duve examines topics such as the evolution of humans, the origins of consciousness, the developmentTrade Review"A well-written, engaging scientific tour de force.... de Duve exhibits an extraordinary skill in conveying his deep knowledge of biology....
