Book SynopsisFor both experienced and beginner knitters, this is an inspirational collection of favourite motifs found in the traditional knitting of Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Iceland and the Faroe Islands, including charming motifs of stars, hearts, flowers, leaping reindeer and dancers, as well as delightful geometric patterns, and more. Each motif is shown as a hand-knitted swatch, illustrated with clear, life-sized photographs and accompanied by easy-to-read colour charts, and a reverse colourway suggestion. With clear details on reading colour charts, and a full review of techniques for two-colour knitting, this book also gives advice on incorporating the Scandinavian motifs into a variety of different projects, allowing you to create unique designs. Includes guidance on choosing yarns, use of colour, and finishing techniques to help you hone your knitting skills and create stylish projects.Trade ReviewAug 13 The Scandinavian vibe continues to be a huge trend heading into summer, as it still reels from its winter success. This book certainly taps into the fashion with 100 authentic designs found in the traditional knitting of Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Iceland and the Faroe Islands. Suitable for both beginner and advanced knitters, it is a collection of inspirational patterns and charming motifs, including flowers, hearts and stars. Each motif is shown as a hand-knitted swatch, illustrated with clear, life-sized photographs and accompanied by easy to read colour charts and a reverse colourway suggestion. With clear details on reading colour charts and a full review of techniques for two-colour knitting, the book also gives advice on incorporating the Scandinavian motifs into a variety of different projects, allowing readers to create their own designs. The techniques and information are basic enough to appeal to knitters and those needing a refresher too. * Craft Business *Sept 13 Following on from 200 Fair-Isle Designs, Mary is back with colourful Scandinavian knitting. Some of the designs will strike you as more obviously Scandinavian than others. Actual size swatches are shown together with charts and alternative colourways for the designs. The charts are easy to use. For all levels of knitters used to working with more than one colour of yarn, this is a useful book. Essential techniques are given for those unfamiliar with colour knitting. It includes symbols and motifs, animals, flowers and traditional geometric patterns. You can combine the designs to make your own unique patterns. There are also four projects included for you to make – a cowl, hat, mittens and pincushion. Great for those who like to design their own knitwear. * Karen Platt Yarnsandfabrics.co.uk/crafts *Oct 13 This is such a great resource book for those looking for fairisle knitting designs. However, it's not just a dictionary of design but also a guide to more advanced knitting, such as steeking and designing garments. It's so accessible but gently stretching too. There are 29 pages on increasing, decreasing, working in the round and holding the yarn with heaps of tips for working with two or more colours. I've always loved going at my own pace with knitting, gradually teaching myself all the techniques one at a time, then coasting for a while until I get bored. I do feel as if I want to try the hat above, maybe in my favourite colour combo - white and red. There are four projects at the back of the book to knit - a cowl, a hat, mittens and a pincushion. The rest of the book is comprised of 168 design charts with an example swatch to show you what it looks like. There are black and white charts as well as colour charts and alternative colourway charts to inspire you. I love the Scandinavian look. The jumpers have really come back into fashion again, so maybe now is the time to knit your own? http://sewingisforgirls.blogspot.co.uk/2013/10/150-scandinavian-knitting-designs-by.html * sewingisforgirls.blogspot.com *Jan 14 Scandi-style is more popular than ever and now you can incorporate the traditional designs into your knits with the patterns in Mary Jane's book. It's a veritable feast, packed with (yes, you guessed it) 150 different designs to use on winter sweaters, yokes, hats, gloves and more. Four patterns, for a hat, cowl, mittens and a pincushion, are also given. Helpfully, the swatches are all printed at actual size and essential instructions are given for those who are unfamiliar with colour knitting. * Knit Today *If you enjoy doing colourwork then this book has a wealth of ideas from single animal motifs to overall ideas for designs for bigger projects. It would be easy to mix and match the patterns to create your own designs. The charts are colour coded to the swatches and there is a second colourway suggestion to get one’s imagination going. There are great ideas for adding bits of fair isle to a garment, hat or cushion cover. I like the fact that the photographed swatches are real in size. An added extra are some simple patterns for a beginner who is new to fair isle to follow. The book also contains helpful hints for a knitter including different cast ons, how to steek and blocking and finishing techniques. I would highly recommend this book to add to your library. -- Monica Russel – Knitting DesignerIf you enjoy doing colourwork then this book has a wealth of ideas from single animal motifs to overall ideas for designs for bigger projects. Out of stock

Book SynopsisFollowing on from her textile hit Slow Stitch, author Claire Wellesley-Smith considers the importance of connection and ideas around wellbeing when using textiles for individuals and communities, including practical ideas around ‘thinking-through-making’, using ‘resonant’ materials and extending the life of pieces using traditional and non-traditional methods. Contemporary textile artists using these themes in their work feature alongside personal work from Claire and examples from community-based textile projects. The book features some of the very best textile artists around, esteemed American fiber artists and the doyenne of textiles, Alice Kettle. Resilient fabrics that can be manipulated, stressed, withstand tension and be made anew are recommended throughout the book, as well as techniques such as layering, patching, reinforcing, re-stitching and mending, plus ideas for the inclusion of everyday materials in your work. There's an exploration of ways to link your emotional health with your textile practice, and 'Community' suggests ways to make connections with others in your regular textile work. 'Landscape' has a range of suggestions and examples of immersing your work in the local landscape, a terrific way to find meaning in your work and a sense of place. Finally, there is a moving account of one textile community's creative response to the 2020 coronavirus pandemic. The connection between wellbeing and the creation of textiles has never been stronger, and, as a leading exponent of this campaign, Claire is the perfect author to help you find more than just a finished textile at the end of a project. Mini Cross-Stitch is Michael's first book, and all the pieces featured are perfect for a beginner but would also appeal to the experienced stitcher looking for a small, quick project. There are easy to follow colour charts provided for each design, along with a colour key to help you select the right threads. This Twenty to Make book is great value, as always, giving you plenty of ideas for all occassions. * Love to Make *July 13 Have a library of quirky gems from Michael Powell to hand with this new book from Search Press. This is one of the Twenty to Make series so this smashing little booklet contains mini cross stitch designs that distil Michael's distinctive and contemporary style. As fans of Michael Powell's design would expect, there are hearts, fairytale buildings and flowers with no straight lines anywhere! There is plenty of inspiration for all occasions throughout the year for cards, small pictures and other ideas. The charts are colour-and-symbol combinations and of a very good size for an almost pocket-sized book. There are no fractional stitches and the detail in Michael's designs come from the intricate back stitch. * NEW STITCHES *July 13 This book is part of the Twenty To Make series. It's a quirky new take on cross stitch influenced by a love of architecture, buildings and gardens. The twenty unique, contemporary designs are shown with charts to work. There is a brief stitching guide. I love the birthday cake, daises and village. The latter and a couple of other designs remind me of the architect Gaudi. All the designs are worked as mini designs, so they are relatively quick to make. Book SynopsisIn this visually stunning book, Moy Mackay reveals how you too can create beautiful pictures using felt. Characterised by her wonderful use of colour, Moy’s work is breathtaking and includes still-lifes, animals and landscapes inspired by the dramatic scenery of the Scottish Borders where she lives and works. Moy takes you through every step of the process, including the materials and tools you need, the feltmaking process itself (which is easier than you’d imagine), and how to put together four fabulous felt paintings of your own. There is guidance on stitching, including both hand- and machine-stitching, as well as how to use colour and introduce texture in the form of different fibres and threads. There are numerous examples of Moy’s work through the book, and by the end you will not fail to be inspired to create gorgeous felt paintings of your own. "Moy's passionate use of colour and the deep texture created by felting are what draw me to her work. I also like the way that she concentrates on her surroundings for her subject matter – her work is very free." - Kaffe FassettTrade ReviewWe love this refreshing take on how we can use our own photographs as inspiration, creating unique felt versions. We think its fresh and we are drawn in by Mackay’s passion for her subject. This isn’t an artist simply producing a book for the sake of it, this seems to be her life and love. For the full review click here. -- Ailish Henderson * www.mrxstitch.com *May 12 'Art in Felt & Stitch' by Moy Mackay is a colourful splash of fleece, fibre and thread. The book involves wet felting with wool tops and machine stitching on top of the picture created with it. The book has very clear instructions at the beginning and is excellent if you are thinking of starting to felt pictures. There are six projects in the book with quite a few pages on each one and there is a very clear photographic step-by-step process to follow. What irritates me sometimes about art books is that they can show you how to draw or paint a complex picture and only show four stages. Suddenly they've finished the picture and you wonder how many stages they've skipped over while your picture looks nothing like the final shot in the book. Moy has photographed each stage so if you are a beginner you won't feel lost or frustrated. Each layer is shown and you get a feel for what she has done in each step. Moy explains her inspiration for using felt in the book: "My 'felt paintings', as I call them, are [...] a way of placing the strokes of coloured fibres as one would place brushstrokes. The results are strikingly rich in colour and texture, and as my passion is for colour, there is a great deal of satisfaction to be had from working with this medium in this way." If you love texture and colour I can't imagine why you wouldn't love this book. A three-dimensional soft intricate woollen picture looks amazing and can look more dramatic than an oil painting. * sewingisforgirls.blogspot.com *Summer 13 Vivid colours and dramatic scenery attracted me to this book. Moy’s enthusiastic introduction describes how her love of painting, drawing and ‘making things’ from an early age progressed to ‘create work that utilises colour and subjects in an uplifting, inspiring way.’ Her bio explains that ‘Since graduating from Glasgow School of Art with a BA (Hons) degree in Design, she has lived and worked as a full time artist in the beautiful Scottish Borders, which are the main source of inspiration for her work.’ Moy hopes that her book will inspire and guide you to create in felt, and that through it she can pass on the positive encouragement given by her creative mother and uncle who nurtured her early efforts. The clear contents page outlines a natural progression of topics to inspire even those who have been previously hesitant, to create their own ‘felt painting’. The first few chapters give full details of the materials and equipment required. Chapters with advice on source of inspiration, colour, texture, composition and techniques follow. Projects are grouped under the headings of landscapes, birds, flowers and still life. Clear, easy to follow, step by step instructions accompany photographs to guide you through all the basic techniques. These include the felting process itself as well as how to embellish it to create form and structure with machine and hand stitching. Plentiful inspiring photos of Moy’s own felt paintings enhance the book. I think that this book is suitable for people with all ranges of experience and it has certainly inspired me. Linda Russell, Gwent Guild * Journal for Weavers, Spinners & Dyers *Sept 12 This book is a refreshing take on still life and art. Moy Mackay creates her pictures using felting and stitch and gives guidance in the book on how these beautiful works are created. The book begins with an introduction to all the materials and equipment you would need to tackle this kind of work. There is an interesting section where you can see, via instruction and photographs, the progression from wool tops to finished piece. It is quite surprising that the majority of design work is completed prior to felting, and what follows from that is embellishment. It covers the process of wet felting, needle felting, machine and hand stitching, and how each technique adds to the picture. After the initial tutorial, there are three project sections that cover Landscapes, Birds and Flowers. You are guided through these with step-by-step photographs and there is also a gallery of a series of works to illustrate each section. It is a wonderful book to read, with good clear instruction to guide you, and to see the finished pieces which are so colourful and perfectly executed is impetus for the reader to try their own. * Workshop On The Web *May 2015 Since learning to needle felt I have wanted to take it to the next level. This book takes me to that next level and far beyond. Moy gives you everything you need to make the most amazing felted pictures. She uses everything from needle felting, wet felting & sewing to create the most amazing pictures. She takes you through step-by-step each of the techniques so that you'll be able to create each of the pictures in the book. She also gives you all this knowledge so that you can create your own. II love the pictures that you can create. They look amazing! I haven't used some of the techniques in the book but after reading the instructions I feel confident that I will be able to perform them. Moy's use of colours is amazing. I can't wait to try her colour mixes. I feel they will give me more confidence to use more colours in my own projects. I can't believe the amazing looks she gets from her techniques in this book. I've already ordered the items I'll need to make my first picture. I just hope I can do justice to her amazing book. * Crochet Addict UK *June 12 Moy Mackay creates beautiful works of art using fleece, fiber and threads in her book "Art in Felt & Stitch". It is filled with colorful felt paintings of still-life, animals and landscapes inspired by her home in the Scottish Borders. See how she uses various felt techniques to achieve her paintings. Felt is one of the earliest fabrics and is older than weaving, spinning and knitting. The book itself is a work of art with the fiber colors jumping off the page in the numerous photographs. Four step by step projects are included with instructional pictures that are clear, detailed and inspiring and numerous. Also included are many examples of her finished pieces. Moy walks you through the materials and equipment you will need. She explains about fibers and texture, composition and technique. Wool, bamboo and silk are just a few of the fibers she works with. Learn about needle and wet felting and using machine and hand stitching to strengthen the highlights and shadows and creating depth. Her flowers are lovely and landscapes breath taking. It is her project of the Birds with berries and her felt painting of Waxwing with Cherry and Lime Blossom that will make you sigh. If you have been thinking about trying your hand at felting or felting pictures in particular, you will enjoy every page of her book. * www.examiner.com/knitting-in-hartford *May 13 Moy's passionate use of colour and the deep texture created by felting are what draw me to her work. I also like the way that she concentrates on her surroundings for her subject matter - her work is very free. (Kaffe Fassett) * Author *June 12 This is a lovely book. It is beautifully produced with Moy's felt paintings vibrantly reproduced. The book takes the reader through all the processes beginning with a full description of her colour blending and all materials used in her work. There may be a little too much detail on the techniques of hand carding but that is only a slight criticism. Moy is exceptionally generous with her descriptions and tips, which are scattered around the pages. The reader is taken step by step through all the elements of her work from the designing, preparation, laying of fibres, felting, embellishing, needle felting and embroidery with hand and machine. The projects start with a quite simple scene of bucolic bliss, proceeding onto a patchwork landscape and then on to more complicated designs. These exercises are interspersed with some wonderful nature pieces and landscapes of exceptional beauty. She is a very talented artist and colourist. This is a book which will inspire, delight and instruct and may lead the reader on to experiments of their own or you can just enjoy it for its wonderful images. * Felt Matters *Apr 12 It is fabulous. If you like contemporary art, with vivid colour and lots of texture then this book is for you. There are lots of pictures of Moys work, and plenty of supporting text. Additionally, there are four diverse projects which detail, step-by-step, how to create similar work using felting, embellishing and stitching techniques. I'm awaiting the delivery of some wool and silk tops, so I can get started.-"BushBabyJane", Amazon * Customer *Jun/Jul 12 Moy Mackay's unique and vibrant 'felt paintings' are created by replacing paint as a medium with fleece, fibres and threads and combining traditional felting techniques with fine art. The result is an exquisite fusion of art, felt and stitch that is both up-lifting and inspiring. There is clear guidance through all of the basic techniques, including the felting process itself and how to use machine and hand stitching to further create form and texture. The four projects and numerous examples of Moy's work complete this visual feast, which cannot fail to inspire and excite painters and textile artists alike. * Fabrications *Jun/Jul 12 Hot water and soap have a profound effect on wool. If your favourite sweater has accidentally been treated that way, you are probably less than thrilled with the outcome. But, if the process was intentional, you've probably been experimenting with the art of felting – and creating one of the earliest fabrics known to man. Dry needle-felting using a felting needle or embellisher machine is currently very popular, but the techniques in this book use the traditional wet-felting methods. Every step of the process is clearly described and illustrated with step-by-step photos. The results are simply beautiful and the 'fibre paintings' range from softly impressionistic landscapes to still-lifes of teacups and bold flowers. Needle-felting is used to refine the shapes and simple hand and machine stitching add definition, details and, of course, texture. Moy shares the techniques that she uses to create her beautiful pictures, and every stage is beautifully illustrated with clear photographs. She begins at the very beginning, showing how to card the fibres, lay them down to form the picture and finally felt the piece. When the felting process is complete, more photos show the process of needle-felting to add details and stitching to create definition in the finished piece. There are four projects, which take you through the processes used to create a patchwork landscape, birds, flowers and a still-life (teacup and cakes). If this book doesn't persuade you to explore the creativity of felting, nothing will. * Stitch *Jun/Jul 12 Using fleece, fibres and threads, Moy creates stunning felt ‘paintings’, combining felt-making with fine art in a unique way. Comprehensive step-by-step instructions guide the reader through the basic techniques and continue with four projects, where Moy shows how to use machine and hand embroidery to produce landscapes, still-life studies of flowers and animals. This colourful and exciting book will inspire the felt-maker to try a different approach to their craft. * East Kent Embroiderer's Guild *Table of ContentsIntroduction 6 Materials and equipment 10 Inspiration 20 Colour 22 Texture 26 Composition 28 Techniques 30 Landscapes 52 Birds 76 Flowers 92 Still life 110 Index 128

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisInspired by the past, Lesley Wilkins illustrates her techniques with a whole host of wonderful designs – flowers, plants, birds, animals and figures. She covers everything – from the materials to use and working with a chart, to getting started and how to stitch. Patterns are created by small stitched units which are combined in many different ways – some heavily textured, some delicate and light. Borders can be built up by repeating and joining motifs. Clear step-by-step photographs accompany the author's comprehensive instructions, and the motifs, borders, fill-in patterns and images are all charted, with inspirational pictures of embroideries showing how to build up finished designs.Trade ReviewI have never attempted Blackwork before so when the opportunity arose to review this book I was extremely happy. I really liked how the sections were set out for example Materials, Equipment, Design, Charts etc taking you through step by step. The designs are very traditional, but saying that going through again and properly looking at all of them you can swap and change and come up with quite a unique piece of blackwork. I found the fill in patterns brilliant and will definitely be giving those a go especially in different colours. Overall an interesting book. -- Helen Price * Amazon *Search Press is celebrating fifty years in print and has reissued selected titles from their back list. Each of these is considered a classic of its kind, and this book on blackwork for beginners is among the fortunate few. Learn how to do this Moorish style of embroidery which came to Britain with Katherine of Aragon, originally published in 2002. You don’t need much equipment or even much embroidery experience to master blackwork. The first chapter shows you what tools and materials you require; your choice of even-weave fabric and the usual basics for embroidery as well as plenty of black thread…plus a few colours as well to update it to the 21st century. It doesn’t take long to learn the few simple stitches, shown here in large easy to read photographs and there are also tips on choosing fabric, good working conditions and reading a chart. The book features quite a few pages of fill-in patterns to inspire, alphabets, ideas for traditional animals and figures, how to fill outlined shapes like leaves, create borders and more. At the back you can find out how to mount your work and there are a couple of samplers to try. You won’t find any actual staged projects and I would have liked to have seen a couple for the benefit of newcomers to embroidery but if you read the book carefully from cover to cover (it won’t take long) you will soon be a pro. Easy to see why this user-friendly book became a classic. If you cannot find a good range of embroidery and needlecraft materials locally try http://www.searchpress.com for a list of suppliers. -- Rachel A Hyde * myshelf.com *I adore the look of Blackwork but have never practiced it. I like the imagery, I like the variation of tone that you can achieve with different patterns and thread, I find it very beautiful and I like the way that any creations are crisp and precise. The crispness and the preciseness are the reason that I don’t do Blackwork. I find it impossible to create anything that is precise; even if I were to use evenweave fabric, I would end up with stitches of differing tension and I would be forever undoing it and the fabric would get more and more ragged as time went on! So, you may ask, why do I have a book about Blackwork? Personally, I prefer to use my own designs and I was attracted to the book because it encourages you to create your own designs. I wanted to use the information in the book to create Blackwork designs for my digital embroidery sewing machine. Traditionalists will probably shudder. The other reason for wanting a book about Blackwork is that I wanted to learn about different Blackwork motifs because I want to use them with different styles of embroidery. As the back cover of the book says “Lesley Wilkins shows how to create traditional blackwork embroideries using simple stitches on evenweave fabric. Step-by-step photographs and a wealth of charts illustrate how traditional motifs, patterns and borders can be combined to create stunning designs.” This book is an excellent book for Blackwork beginners. The first section is an introduction which explains what Blackwork is and gives a brief history. The next chapter describes the materials and equipment required. I like the advice to use a rectangular frame rather than a hoop. Using such a frame might resolve my tidiness issues. Next is the chapter on design (the main reason for purchasing the book), followed by information on how to use charts, essential knowledge for somebody who wants to do their own designs. Blackwork doesn’t lend itself to making it up as you go along! Lesley Wilkins describes how to get started, how to choose the correct size of fabric and how to fix the fabric to the frame. Coming after this, the book describes the three most used stitches, double running stitch, back stitch and cross stitch. “Double running stitch, or Holbein stitch … gives a smoother effect than back stitch”. This surprised me until I worked out that they are different on the underside. Back stitch has two layers of thread on the underside, whilst double running stitch only has one. The last half of the book shows stitched examples and charts for flowers and plants, figures, birds and animals, fill-in patterns and borders. The final chapter shows how to mount your work. As a result of reviewing my designs for this book review, I fancy changing the larger bird design so that there is more stitching between the birds. When talking about the history, the author mentions that borders of Blackwork were used on cuffs to reinforce them. I fancy doing the border from the first design around the cuffs of a jacket. In conclusion, I recommend this book for anybody who is a Blackwork beginner. It shows you how to get started, gives plenty of examples and helps you to create your own designs. By Julie Stenning for the Embroiderers' Guild ThreadIT community -- Julie Stenning * The Embroiders' Guild ThreadIT Community *Blackwork embroidery gives such a stunning effect and can be used to embellish a specific piece by choosing particular motifs or you can make cushions, wall hangings and samplers. With this kind of embroidery, the trick is to get the back looking identical to the front. Although this is not a necessary requirement, I do think it gives an extra sense of achievement if it can be done. The designs in this book are amazing, some are very simple and others have a look of intricacy in them. There are figures, flowers, borders and much much more, this gives a lot of inspiration if you want to design your own piece. I loved the alphabet designs and the idea of adding colour to the blackwork gives an elegant feel. Fabric choices are aida, renewable and hardanger and a selection of threads are recommended. This is a craft for every level of expertise, the author gives a very comprehensive lesson in the art. Until I read this book. By the time I had read the introduction and the first two pages I suddenly realised that I understood the weave structure, as the title promised. The author writes in a friendly and conversational style. After explaining the basic principles of shadow weaving, she leads the reader step-by-step through threading and treadling for four and eight-harness set-ups. In Chapter 6 she explains how to break down a full draft into its individual components, starting with the dominant threads, then adding the shadow threads, before putting all the components together to see if it works. The second half of the book contains 15 very attractive projects to try, from simple but beautiful designs on 4-shafts to complex constructions for 8-shafts. Book SynopsisA form of handmade lace, tatting is a traditional skill with origins dating back centuries and spanning continents. Each stitch is composed of two half-hitch knots. The single thread is looped and knotted with the aid of a small shuttle - a simple technique that produces amazingly intricate results. This book shows how a simple piece of tatting can be developed into something striking and complex. The reader is guided through the process with easy-to-follow diagrams and descriptions. The 15 stunning designs, including many variants to experiment with, allow the tatting disciple to explore the craft further. Ideas for how the basic patterns can be developed are included, as well as suggestions such as creating very different looks by varying the thread used. Whatever your level of experience, Creative Tatting offers the chance to create something satisfying and unique to cherish or give as a gift. AUTHOR: Lindsay Rogers had been embroidering and tatting as a hobby since childhood. But, in 1987 she joined the international organisation 'Ring of Tatters' and was increasingly sought out by individuals and commercial concerns for help with design and technique. Lindsay's mastery of the craft and deft skill at conjuring up her own wonderful designs and patterns highlighted her expertise and she was invited to teach in Japan where some of her work has been exhibited. Apart from her time in Japan, she has lived in Invergarry in the Highlands of Scotland since the 1960s and her designs are inspired by her love of the countryside.

  • Stitch, Fabric & Thread: An Inspirational Guide

Search Press Ltd Stitch, Fabric & Thread: An Inspirational Guide

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisExperiment with stitch, fabric and thread to create your own unique textiles. This inventive book is a treasure trove of over 40 inspiring practical exercises, a rich and creative exploration of fabric and stitch, and a fascinating all-round read. Elizabeth Healey's approach to sewing is that it should be fun, and not like a chore or an exam we need to excel in. Her aim is to simply encourage you to pick up a needle and thread and get sewing! The exercises draw inspiration from around the world: create corded works of art inspired by Milton Glaser's iconic Bob Dylan poster; create bold embroidered African masks; layer up and cut away to create Mola applique; use bleach and fabric paint to create Aboriginal dreamtime lizards; create knotted works of art inspired by ancient Mayan counting systems; embroider varsity cross-stitch letters or try out decorative Japanese book binding. Alternatively, try a host of other techniques such as quilting, printing, dyeing, couching tumbled crockery, creating pleats and puckers and needlelace. Packed with stitch galleries and bursting with slow sewing ideas, the book also contains 'behind the stitches' features: illuminating insights into sewing movements such as Boro textiles, Gee's Bend quilting and Dorset buttons.Trade ReviewAt first glance I thought this book is not for me. How wrong could I be. Its exciting, informative and fun. It has a theme of humour throughout the book. It looks at traditional basic stitches and explores different ways of using them. It asks what is thread? The short answer is anything can be used as thread as long as the material you are sewing into has an open enough weave to accommodate it. If you are looking to take stitching to the next level but don’t know how to this is the book for you. It is full of ideas and tips. Using everyday objects as a source it explores ways of using them in stitch. This book is packed full of detail from the history behind some of the stitches to Aboriginal Culture. There is so much in this book it’s practical, informative full of fun and the photography is superb. A book that has something for everyone with page after page of ideas. -- Muriel Campbell, Board Chair * Embroiderers Guild *Received my copy on Friday, it contains a great range of techniques that I've never seen before. I mainly do cross stitch and make soft toys, but your book has opened my eyes to maybe trying new things .Im especially keen to try patchwork and dying and pleating. Book is very informative and I look forward to moving on to some new ventures ,thanks for giving me the chance . :) -- Mary Strickland * Customer Review *In this guide, crafter Healey explores embroidery supplies and techniques, drawing inspiration from a variety of sources, including vintage textiles, street art, textile arts from around the world, nature, and modern art. A variety of stitches and fabrics are used, and her exploration of non-Western embroidery, such as Japanese boro textiles, Indian shisha, and South Asian kantha, will introduce these traditional techniques to a broader audience. The projects serve as an excellent jumping-off point for creative stitchers; Healey’s willingness to stitch with just about anything will inspire embroiderers to see the potential in everyday materials. VERDICT Embroiderers are a natural audience for this guide; however, crafters interested in crazy quilting will also find some interesting ideas. * Library Journal USA *For an abundance of drool worthy creative sewing inspiration, look no further than Elizabeth Healey's STITCH, FABRIC & THREAD (Search Press 2017). This 160-page book has over 40 inspirational techniques to learn, from decorative stitches to raised textures like knots, trapunto, cords, pleats, and pinches, drawn threadwork, mola applique, and more. Comprehensive information on threads, colors, and fabrics rounds out the contents, and makes for an easy leap to your own embellished garment and accessory projects. But whether or not you've got an itch to embellish, the photos alone will make this book a treasured resource. - in the Must Haves section of Vogue Patterns. * Vogue Patterns (Aug/Sept 2017) *July 2017 Pretty Patches contributor Elizabeth Healey brings her passion for textiles to Stitch, Fabric & Thread an exploration of stitched work including over 400 practical exercises. The projects draw inspiration from around the world, from embroidered African Masks to Aboriginal dreamtime lizards and Japanese Bookbinding. * Pretty Patches *This new book by Elizabeth Healey headlines as ‘an inspirational guide for creative stitchers’ and is an experimental book for those – perhaps fairly new to stitching – who wish to develop and play with their creative ideas. The book is not strictly a project book but it does include templates for some of the ideas for you to have a go. The book’s aim is to allow you to develop your own ideas from the wealth of techniques mentioned in the book, with the focus on different stitch types, both hand and machine. It begins with a back-to-basics look at tools, threads and material types that you can choose for stitching. It really assumes limited knowledge and is a very comprehensive introduction before you start creating. Then it leads into different stitch-based sections, starting with straight stitches. The first four pages of the section are a beautifully photographed visual exploration of different straight stitch techniques to whet your appetite before it focuses on more detailed techniques and ideas such as pojagi patchwork, kantha and creative darning. The book continues in a similar format with well-illustrated sections on chain and blanket stitches, textural raised stitches, fabric manipulation and embellishments. As before there is a quick visual overview followed by more detailed ideas. The author explores stitch ideas from around the World and the book is an interesting read too! It finishes with a very useful visual dictionary of stitches at the rear of the book and templates (not all at full-size) for some of the ideas to kick-start your creativity. You will enjoy this book if you want to stitch your own designs, but get ‘stuck’ coming up with ways to achieve your ideas. It is packed full of inspiring images that will help set you off on your creative journey. - See more at: http://www.thesewingdirectory.co.uk/stitch-fabric-and-thread/#sthash.H5eAb2gw.dpuf * The Sewing Directory *Wow! What a truly inspirational book. As soon as I opened the front cover I fund my self-itching to get started on another project inspired by this book. Elizabeth Healey has done an amazing job of drawing together ideas and inspiration from all over the world. Each chapter is based on one type of Stitch and shows you how you can expand on that type to create wonderful works of embroidery and textile art. All in all this book is definitely worth buying as I believe it is one you will go back to time and time again, for both reference and inspiration! -- Sian Lawton * Customer Review *Yes, I know this is a papercraft blog – but the source of my inspiration is frequently needlecraft and this new title by Elizabeth Healey is an appreciation of many of the fabric manipulation techniques that kindle my creative fire. This lively new title covers many wonderful needlecraft specialities, including shisha mirror embroidery, Suffolk puffs, penny rugs, mola (reverse appliqué) and so much more. All interspersed with a dash of cultural and/or historical background and super how-to tips. This book provides exactly what is says on the tin, delivering on the promise of the title's strap line. The projects are delightful and the author successfully updates many techniques with time-saving tweaks (such as the cheat’s molas worked with felt cut-outs – no edges to turn under). The fact that many (probably all) creative endeavours are underpinned by mathematical principles strikes fear in the heart of many crafters – Elizabeth Healey proudly revels in this knowledge, and shares her wondrous discoveries. She says , “I was once told that sewing is basically applied mathematics. If maths was your most hated subject at school, don’t panic”. Another gem is citing that creating a seemingly random pattern is not as easy as it sounds. Yay. A weekend browse of this book could send your crafting off in splendid new directions. Would also make a fab Mother’s Day gift. http://thepapercraftpost.blogspot.co.uk/2017/03/stitch-fabric-thread-by-elizabeth.html * Papercraft Post *I bet that gorgeous cover grabbed your attention. It gives you some idea of the inspiration this book provides through practical exercises. The many techniques explored in this book are quilting, shisha embroidery, printing, mola, dyeing, couching, Japanese bookbinding and needlelace. You'll discover stitch galleries and features on sewing movements such as Boro textiles. Subtitled 'An Inspirational Guide For Creative Stitchers' this book includes : Before The Stitches - all about research and preparation; Running Stitches explores straight stitches; Chain and Blanket Stitches is another exploration of stitches and includes creating penny mats, one of my favourite projects in the book as well as stitched memories; Raised Stitches has some nice experimental ideas including Dorset buttons and More Than Stitches including Shibori techniques and mola and gathered circles and stitches at the very back of the book. The book is a basic introduction to stitch with projects that you can follow. Since it covers a lot of things, it should have broad appeal. With over 40 exercises there is bound to be many things you will love. I felt that even if you encountered nothing new, you would still find value in the projects and expression in this creative book. So much to love for stitchers here. * yarnsandfabrics.co.uk *Elizabeth Healey's book is an inspirational book indeed. As an embroiderer who takes a very playful approach to her craft, looking at spontaneity and improvisation rather than following patterns or rules, what we have in Stitch, Fabric and Thread is a book full of new and exciting approaches within a framework of what most people would feel comfortable with. Particular stitches are explored but go off on tangents. So with the running stitch, you look at the basics, then at a gallery of over 25 different ways of using straight stitch in your work. You then move onto a series of wildly different exercises or projects, all using running stitch. Chain and blanket stitches and later textured stitches are approached in the same way and you are moved far away from a pedestrian approach but taken on a roller coaster ride of stitching, stories and 'Behind the Stitches' which look more deeply into subjects ranging from Dorset Buttons to Boro Textiles or Mola Reverse Appliqué. It is an exciting book that feels like someone with a brain full of stitches and ideas has exploded onto the page. It is taken beyond the traditional book of stitches and goes one step further, moving from the stitch to all the different ways you could use it and making it a treasure trove of ideas. From making simple stitched forms to mini art forms, you have a really good book about making stitching fun and thinking outside the box. * Workshop on the web *Elizabeth takes a slightly unconventional approach with her first book by presenting a range of creative and inspirational projects based around stitch types. The projects are of a somewhat random nature, but explanations are given for each, allowing flexibility for the reader to expand the idea in her own way. A charming ideas book perfect for anyone wishing to experiment with fabric and thread. * East Kent Embroiderers Guild *I am an artist and do a bit of sewing in some of my artwork. I found this book inspiring. Lots of beautiful photos throughout the book. It is so creative and is definitely a book I will pick up time and again -- Heather Graham * Customer Review *The title of this book says it all - Stitch Fabric & Thread 'An Inspirational Guide for Creative Stitchers' - and it certainly is just that 'inspirational'. This lovely book is packed full of techniques, ideas and instruction for the avid stitcher that are beautifully illustrated and clearly explained - including embroidery, quilting, fabric painting, dyeing and much much more. It introduced me to many techniques that I had never seen before, and I will look to this book for a wealth of ideas and for practical stitch reference for many years to come -- Gaynor Lewis * Customer Review *We love this book, packed with stitch galleries and bursting with slow sewing ideas, the book also contains 'behind the scenes stitches' features; illuminating insights into sewing movements such as Boro textiles, Gee's bend quilting and Dorset Buttons. It is an absolute inspiration! * Hot Brands Cool Places *You only have to look at the cover of this book to feel inspired. With 160 pages of well illustrated information that can be difficult to find elsewhere this book is a must for every textile student, sewing enthusiast and mixed media artist. The book contained a wide range of textile techniques that have been explained well along with projects to try. Also included are answers to questions about how things work....for example...how a sewing machine works. This book contains more than the title suggests and is a joy to own. -- Gaye Parker * Customer Review *An excellent, inspiring book that gives lots of photos to easily explain ideas , that covers lots of techniques. I felt like a child in a sweet shop, that got me straight in my craft room trying ideas out . I can recommend the book to anyone that is trying and playing with new inspiring techniques. -- Karen Meakin * Customer Review *The illustrations in this book are really good and there are clear instructions to help you create some wonderful stitching projects. The layout of the book makes you want to try all the different techniques and overall, it's given me some new inspiration. -- Joanne Crosby * Customer Review *This is a lovely inspiring sewing book to relax with and absorb ideas from. The author has a particular style emulating nature and using soft subtle natural shades and ethnic inspiration, using traditional stitching techniques which becomes apparent throughout the book. It all makes for a very soothing and restful style which is nevertheless exciting and innovative. As well as lots of tips and techniques there are specific projects to try with step by step guidelines and templates. Techniques covered which I had not come across before include Boro stitching and Mola applique and there are some great ideas for making and using Dorset buttons which I've already begun and find them fascinating. A must read for imaginative stitchers and would be textile artists, to add to your sewing library and gain insight and creativity from. -- Jan Lambert * Customer Review *I so wish there were a higher star rating that I could give as this book is PHENOMENAL! Elizabeth Healey has absolutely jam-packed this book with ideas, exercises, prompts and knowledge for stitching in a range of contexts and inspirations. You can see from the contents page at how detailed this book is, but it isn’t ever overwhelming! The book’s layout and the structure have been expertly thought through and crafted so that you, as the reader and maker, are taken on a textile journey. Even the subtle page decorations are inspirational as you go through the book… Before starting the stitches, Elizabeth talks about the importance of preparation in terms of tools, sketchbooks and recording, threads, fabrics, colour, image inspiration and more. What I really love is how Elizabeth really brings it back to basics in exploring these factors. For example, Elizabeth talks about the different fabrics in such detail (their weave, their formation, their weight) and, even if you thought you know lots about fabric, it is so informative and inspiring. I adore how Elizabeth also encourages you to think ethically about your fabrics too with a specific section on ethical textiles and textile recycling. Once the preparation is covered, Elizabeth then begins to explore the stitches with the first section being based on straight stitches. Now, don’t be fooled! Straight stitches are so incredibly versatile, and Elizabeth demonstrates this beautifully with a phenomenal 26 visual prompts for using straight stitch including (but not limited to) chicken scratch, seed stitch, kantha, boro, sashiko and much, much more. I love how each of the 26 prompts is presented visually at the start of that section so that you can see exactly what the stitch idea is. Then the in-action prompts begin and the layout for each activity/prompt is exquisite! The technique/stitch is explained alongside the materials, the instructions and stunning photography. What is also incredibly clever is that a lot of the prompts also contain an ‘elsewhere’ section which is almost like an extension of that prompt and encourages you to look further into that specific technique/inspiration. Continuing this inspirational and flawless layout, the second section explores ‘chain and blanket stitches’ (shisha, felt, mail art, stitching on knit and more), the third section explores ‘raised stitches’ (embellishing prints, scattered french knots, couching) alongside pattern repeats, natural dyes, ink and bleach experimentation with the fourth and final section exploring ‘more than stitches’ (shibori techniques, texture, rag books, applique, drawn thread and more). If you’re new to stitching, or just want a refresher on stitching techniques, then there is also a detailed and easy-to-follow section on the range of stitches used towards the end of the book. I genuinely don’t know how to rave about this book any higher. If there is only one book that you buy this year then I would really, really recommend that you choose this one as it is phenomenal from start to finish! As she points out, furoshiki is the ultimate, ecologically perfect answer to the plastic-bag epidemic, as it advocates reusing or reconstructing fabric into a covering that can often get double or even triple use as a tablecloth, picnic setting, or part of a larger item, like a quilt. An upfront section outlines the history of furoshiki, considerations on "becoming green," and options for fabrics, sizes, colours, and patterns. Black-and-white illustrations show the how-tos of different fabric knotting methods within the first few pages and are also embedded in each of the 50-plus projects, along with a quality colour photograph of the finished piece. Across three categories (for carrying, gift wrapping, and decorating), Le Marec showcases practical projects like a laptop bag, flower or bottle wrap, and a ready-to-hug bunny wrap that could encompass a kid’s toy. -- Barbara Jacobs * Booklist *Furoshiki is a traditional Japanese wrapping cloth that's folded to create bags for carrying things. Furoshiki is an ancient Japanese technique for wrapping with a simple square of fabric. First used in 710 AD, the author touches on the history of Furoshiki as well as the meaning and symbolism of giving a beautifully wrapped gift. She also shares how Furoshiki has become the symbol of Mottainai in Japan (avoiding waste and the philosophy of reduce, reuse and recycle). The art of wrapping is not only creative but is an easy step in saying goodbye to plastic bags and gift wrap and using natural or recycled fabric materials instead. Full of colour photographs and illustrations, the author shows the various knots and takes you step-by-step through over 50 different projects. The beauty of this technique is that there are thousands of possibilities for using Furoshiki in your daily life from wrapping plant pots, creating handbags and carry-alls to wrapping books and bottles, making cushions, and even a guitar case to name a few. I've attached a photo of the laptop carrier I made which proved to be very strong and much prettier than my old laptop bag!
