I'm not sure where to begin in singing its praises. Not only is it a visual treat, but if you are not already a felting or ribbon embroidery enthusiast, you will certainly be tempted to have a go after seeing the sheer volume of information here. This time, Di joins forces with fellow South African expert Toody Cassidy whose colourful and explicit step-by-step instructions are so clear and attractive. Not one move is left to the imagination. As for the drawn diagrams, they are amongst the very best I've ever seen. There are no less than 14 attractive projects to make, once you have become familiar with the process, any of which I'd be delighted to own. * SEW Region Magazine (December 2019) *Internationally renowned ribbon artist, Di van Niekerk, has brought the textile and embroidery worlds together to create a unique book that combines the two mediums, with fabulous results. Make felted backgrounds and enhance them with silk ribbon embroidery. Step-by-step instructions are included for felting and for making silk embroidered flowers and creatures. See how to wet felt with wool and silk embellishments; silk paper, needle felting or nuno felting. Learn the art of silk ribbon embroidery. There are 15 projects that also have step-by-step instructions, so this book is ideal from beginners upwards. Make a beautiful felted scarf with a silk ribbon embroidered detail; a throw with an embroidered border; a tablet or hot-water bottle cover, purse, handbag, sampler, spectacle case, wall art, bag, hold-all, bracelet or needle case. I like the projects, they have a contemporary feel. The sparrow on the purse is very special. For each project you see at a glance the materials you need with colour charts, needles, stitches and techniques, process, embroidery and finishing off. An illustrated gallery of stitches used in the projects is given too, clearly showing stitches such as French knot and how to make a rose, for example, with excellent large detailed line drawings in colour. The patterns are at the back of the book. The book is beautifully illustrated throughout. Di van Niekerk is a well-known silk embroiderer and has joined forces with felter Toody Cassidy and used some designs from Chic Fusion in the book. The book was originally published in South Africa. This book is part of the Textile Artist series. Absolutely superb and highly recommended. * Karen Platt *Di van Nierkerk has produced many beautiful books for Search Press on the topics of silk ribbon and other embroidery styles. Now she teams up with felter Toody Cassidy to produce this book on how to combine the crafts to make some stunning pieces. This book is arranged in three sections: felting, stitches and projects. The felting methods covered are wet felting for the backgrounds on which to embroider, and the more detailed needle felting for the smaller details. This is a large format book with plenty of photographs but some of them are a bit small (1½”²) and rather detailed. They are backed up by some good detailed instructions but even a little bigger would have been a lot better. There are three projects in this section (hot water bottle cover, throw and scarf) to give you a feel for making items with the method; a good idea. The middle section covers all the stitches you need and handily starts with list of all thirty-six. The stitches are then shown in large, easy to see drawings containing as many stages as you need to complete them easily. As well as a number of ribbon stitches there are the usual freestyle staples such as chain, blanket and feather but also more unusual ones and how to cover a bead with ribbon. The fourteen projects are also listed with brief descriptions at the start of their section Three of these projects are the felt items made in the first section as well as a bracelet, spectacle case, handbag, clutch bag and more. An imaginative selection, and beautifully adorned with embroidered flowers, some of which look almost real. You can imagine the price these designer items would cost in high end stores, but all can be achieved with some clear written instructions, photographs of varied sizes (some rather small again) and a list of absolutely everything you need. This is laid out clearly in sections with photographs of most of the items including thread and ribbon colors and exactly the right needles. This is a book aimed more at the intermediate needle worker who has some experience with basic sewing and embroidery but a beginning felter will find enough to learn from. Beautiful and inspiring, like all this talented author’s books. -- Rachel A Hyde * Myshelf.com *The book is beautiful. The instruction is clear. The projects are varied, unique, and intriguing. If you’ve never considered felting your own fabric, the book might seem a little overwhelming at first. But read through it – you’ll find that some approaches are more manageable than others and that the clear instructions will boost your confidence! It’s a book for any fiber artist, for any silk ribbon enthusiast, and for any needleworker who enjoys learning about other techniques to explore some day! The instruction throughout the book is so clear and so well illustrated, that you’ll be creating your own ribbon masterpieces with ease in no time! To read the full review please follow the link, https://www.needlenthread.com/2017/11/the-art-of-felting-silk-ribbon-embroidery-book-review.html -- Mary Corbet * Mary Corbet's Needle 'n Thread *The latest title in ‘The Textile Artist’ series is from experienced teachers and embroiderers Di and Toody who explore the ancient craft of felt making adorned with the delicacy of silk ribbons to produce exquisite, tactile pieces of art. The first chapter delivers comprehensive instructions for making felt followed by a further chapter fully explaining the embroidery using silk ribbon and thread. This is not a ‘quick-fix’ book – more about an investment of time and a love of beautiful handmade things. Every one of the fourteen projects are presented with highly detailed colour photographs and full step-by-step instructions enabling the maker to achieve enjoyable and rewarding results. This is a lovely book just to look at – to marvel at the fine cob-web like felt and the delicate miniature roses, pansies, fuchsias, and more, crafted from fine silk ribbon, but for anyone wishing to try something a little different and create an item worthy of heirloom status, then this is the book for you! * East Kent Embroiderers Guild *

    Out of stock

Book Synopsis"Stitched Sewing Organizers is the book I have been waiting years for." The Sewing Directory Celebrate and use your sewing skills with well-known and popular designer Aneela Hoey's 15 stylish yet functional patterns for a wide variety of sewing organisers. Designed to work together, many of the smaller projects fit into larger ones and can be made into a coordinating set. Showcase trendy fat quarters and half-yards or use up odds and ends of your favourite fabric as you make cute containers for yourself, to give to your friends, or to bring to swaps. Even the more challenging patterns can be sewn in less than a day - perfect for when you need a break from those more time-consuming projects.Trade ReviewStitched Sewing Organizers is the book I have been waiting years for! With so many projects on the go, sewing supplies to store etc I’m always looking for clever patterns to make to get myself organised. I have in fact made a couple of the author, Aneela Hoey’s, patterns before so when she bought out a whole book of them I couldn’t wait to get my hands on it. The book is published by Stash Books in America and imported into the UK by Search Press which does make it a little more expensive than the books from British publishers. However, when you realise that Aneela’s patterns cost £7 each to buy, and you get 15 in the book it makes great value for money. Below are the projects you will find in the book. The 15 patterns are split into the following categories in the book: Small Things, Cases and Folios, Pouches and Boxes and Totes. They range from projects you can make in an hour or so to those that take most the day. I suspect most stitchers will find several they want to make. There’s also a tools and basic techniques section at the start of the book to give you the knowledge you need to make the projects. Although there’s a few generic projects like a tomato pincushion, large zippy pouch and drawstring bag most have Aneela’s unique stamp on them. I particularly like the Fold Up Sewing Folio, a great travel sewing kit, The Book and Tool Folio for keeping book, patterns and the tools you need to make the projects together in one place and The See It All Pouch, a transparent project bag. Most the projects are also fat quarter friendly so will make great stash busters. Several use clear vinyl which you can also buy from Search Press here. I’ve made four of the See All Pouches already and plan to make several more, they make ideal extras for Instagram swaps or gifts for stitchy friends. They are quick and easy to make and fat quarter friendly. The only change I’d suggest to the pattern in the book is to use a 12 inch zip, which you could cut down if needed. I found 10 inch zips a little too small and ended up cutting the pouch down on my first one, and then adding zip tabs to extend the zip on my second pouch (the purple one above). The third and fourth pouches I used 12 inch zips and it worked out great. I’m looking forward to making some of the other projects in the book, next on my list are the fabric boxes. • Crochet Ragdolls

    Stackpole Books Crochet Ragdolls

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisTrade ReviewA book full of cute crochet makes for an older child, as all have little eyes (pop on safety eyes), called rag dolls because only the heads and arms are stuffed and the body is flat. The expressions and designs of the toys are delightful. Many have a parent, aka a larger matching figure, so endless scope for imaginative play. The crochet terms are US with handy illustrations. The toys are made using a lightweight DK yarn and a UK 3 mm / US d-3 size crochet hook. The photography and styling are superb. I am a little bit in love with the panda! Every child should have a soft crochet buddy to love and cuddle! -- Ashley Cramp * lazydaisyjones.com *My first thought on encountering this big, blousy book was that it was brave in the face of competition like Kerry Lord's Edward's Menagerie, with which it would. inevitably, be compared. Indeed it adopts a similar approach in that all the projects are adaptations of the same basic pattern, It also mirrors Lord's ideas regarding minimum stuffing but takes them one step further, advocating fully floppy torsos and toes - the only filler being in the crittur's heads. It is American, however (watch out for those stitch names!) so the similarities could be coincidental. This could also account for what might be, in the UK anyway, a slightly misleading title, for I argue that there is only one actual ragdoll in the book. She's called Princess, and very lovely she is too - I particularly adored the inclusion of patterns for her extended wardrobe. From the photos, the basic patterns seems super simple and you might think that you could reel a few off in a week, so I confidently began with the friendly little frog. I was however, quickly disavowed of any ideas that this gloriously named author's projects would be rapidfire. Admittedly the two-colour adaptation posed a greater challenge, and I could have saved myself some time and tension if I'd opted for the one-colour hippo or croc for my first go. Working these sweet creatures, even the babies, takes concentration and focus, with close attention to the pattern; so if you're looking for a relatively short project that will take your mind off things for a while, look no further. The animals in the photos are all made from Scheepjes cotton mix, but the quantities are low, so this could be good for a raid on your stash, or an excuse to buy a single ball or two of something perfectly plush. The book includes stitch reminders, tips and assembly notes, as well as the 30 projects that could keep you gifting for years, making it a must-have resource in your collection. -- Lindy Zubairy * SlipKnot - Issue 169 *

Book SynopsisThe latest addition to the Love to Sew series, this new title from best-selling author Debbie Shore contains 15 gorgeous, practical items that every sewer will love to make, use or give as gifts. The book contains storage solutions and sewing accessories to equip every sewing space. The projects range from practical storage solutions such as tool rolls, carry cases and cutting mat carriers to innovative ways to keep a sewing space tidy, such as a handy armchair storage device and an ironing station, complete with board cover and handy hanging pouch for storing a mini iron and attachments. The book also contains colourful sewing room essentials such as a pincushion, a seam press and handmade bobbins, and inspiring items perfect to give as gifts: a sewing room diary cover and a sewing case. The book contains a comprehensive materials and techniques section at the beginning, showing clearly all the techniques needed, with beautiful photography and easy-to-follow instructions. Each of the projects contains step-by-step photography and clear instructions so that even beginners will find these projects a doddle. Trade ReviewFeb 17 I am a great fan of the Love to Sew series, with previous titles including Quilted Flowers, Mug Rugs and Teddy Bears. They are well priced and even if your bookshelf is starting to groan under the weight of craft books then the handy size will be welcomed! This latest title, Sewing Room Accessories, has been written by Debbie Shore, a name that may be familiar to readers through her YouTube channel and previous books. Her new book contains fifteen projects, all made in the practical style Debbie is known for. It starts with pincushions, and then goes on to patterns for a sewing case, sewing machine covers, a tool roll - everything you could think of that you need to make sewing easier. My favourite thing is the Ironing Stand which is based on foldable TV tables found in homeware shops. It looks fairly easy to make, and and would be very handy to have around the house when I sew. The book opens with a short introduction of techniques, but the clear step-by-step photos for each project makes it suitable for all abilities. Many of the projects have details such as pockets and zips to create clever storage ideas. The patterns are written in inches and centimetres, so will keep both quilters and dressmakers happy. If one of your new year's resolutions was to be organised and sew, then you will find lots of inspiration in this book. * Popular Patchwork *There is a lot of information in the book useful to those that are new to sewing. There are several projects many of which I will be making myself, my first project will be the sewing machine cover which I have been wanting to make for a long time. The pin cushion project looks easy and so pretty! All the projects can be made from fabric that I already have and many would make lovely gifts. The instructions are clear and easy to follow. * Joanne Catermole *Dec 2016 The newest title in the Love to Sew series from TV presenter Debbie is a wonderful collection of practical yet pretty items for the sewing enthusiast. As always Debbie provides a comprehensive guide to the fabrics and equipment required together with detailed step-by-step instructions. There are fifteen delightful projects to choose from including machine covers, caddies and totes for sewing equipment, ironing accessories and a fabulous funky pumpkin pincushion! Outstanding value-for-money, this is a must-have book for sewers of all abilities. * East Kent Embroiderers Guild *Anybody who sews is going to require places to keep materials and items that help with various tasks. Here is a book of projects for making more than just pincushions to keep your sewing area tidy and enable you to transport your kit as well. There are fifteen projects in here, some of which can be made out of leftovers from other projects. Cotton fabric is used throughout, making this a book that will have a lot of appeal to quilters. Apart from the basic sewing kit you won’t need much else to make these projects, but there is a page showing some additional supplies such as a bamboo creaser, tacking glue pen, fabric clips etc. These items are all optional. This is a book aimed at those who already sew so is not for beginners, although there are instructions at the front for doing appliqué and creating and using bias strips. Make cases, rolls and caddies for storing tools, bags for carrying to classes, a sewing machine cover and useful pressing mitt. Each project has staged instructions with both captions and photographs, as well as a list of what materials and tools you need and a larger photo of the finished item. As this is not for beginners the staged photographs are not numerous but do illustrate the trickier parts. There are also often more than one view of the item showing it open as well as closed for example which is useful. * myshelf.com *Lovely book with easy to follow instructions and some great projects to try. * Lesley Roche *This is a good book it has got great ideas on how to do simple sewing for begginers. It also gives you step to step instructionsand pictures to show you what you should do next. * Mehnaz Hussain *Anybody who sews is going to require places to keep materials and items that help with various tasks. The book contains 10 inspiring skirt options to get you started... but it’s your skirt, your way, so fill your wardrobe with an array of gorgeous skirts that fit you perfectly and suit your style!Trade ReviewJenniffer Taylor first flew into my radar when I saw her on The Great British Sewing Bee, and I thought she was amazing. Very much an advocate of the term ‘you size‘ she has since developed a range of hand drafted patterns unique to your very own shape and size. Using just four of your body measurements, with the help of this book you can create a garment that is well fitted and tailored to your body. Like most of us home dressmakers, Jenniffer is self taught, but what she teaches us is that anyone can have a go and make a wearable piece of clothing. She has also ensured that whatever our individual style, our finished piece will fit perfectly and give us confidence that it will look good. From drafting your pattern to the fastenings, everything you need to know is included and helpful tips guarentee a professional finish. This book is a must have for everyone who loves to make their own clothes. -- Tracy Shephard * Postcard Reviews *Draft your block, choose your shape, and customise your own design says Jenniffer Taylor! The book contains ten skirt options to get you started and fill your wardrobe with gorgeous skirts that fit perfectly and suit your style! * Machine Knitting Monthly *Looking for a totally unique skirt? Well, you're in luck, as this must-have manual by author Jennifer Taylor, of The Great British Sewing Bee fame, shows you how to mix and match elements to create your ultimate garment. Whether you prefer a pleated mini or an A-line maxi, there's something for every style - plus a whole range of options for pockets, zips, buttons and yokes, too. * Sew magazine - December 2020 *Although I have sewn since I was a teenager, I’ve never drafted a pattern. I’m not a conventional shape so always have to tweak patterns and skirts never quite work for me, hence my interest on this book. Skirts are the easiest patterns to draft, ideal for a first go at drafting. At the start of the book there are sections on fabrics, sewing tools and drafting tools. The author then splits the book into three main sections: 1. Constructing the basic skirt block then altering for six variations on shape. 2. Techniques and some extra details. 3. Skirt ‘recipes’, where you can mix up the techniques and details. Taylor makes constructing the block (Americans call it a sloper) very understandable by breaking it down into bite sized steps. Correct body measurements are crucial and she explains how best to take them and where. (E.g. where do you measure for hips and waist? And how should you determine length?) Although I haven’t made a block yet, I’ve read through the instructions, which are very detailed and are easy to understand. Take them slowly and make sure you read through before starting to carry them out. She includes making a toile (practice garment, Americans call this a muslin) and then checking the fit and how to fine tune it. The main reason for making your own blocks is to ensure a nicely fitting garment. The next section shows how to alter the basic skirt shape to create a further five skirt shapes, such as a pencil skirt and a flared skirt. Taylor goes on to explain techniques such as a traditional waistband, facings and zips. Two zip insertions are shown, one is a centred zip. The other is a fly zip which is less common and ignored in many other sewing books. (I’m looking forward to trying it her way.) Invisible/concealed zips are mentioned but not shown. Techniques such as pockets, hems, a back vent and yokes were dealt with before the skirt recipes. There are ten suggested skirt styles, but many of the components can be swapped around, added, taken off etc. So you really have a multitude of variations to personalise your skirt for you. I like Taylor’s approach of using a scaled down/mini mannequin to show the various component shapes and how they make up a skirt. Genius! It’s much easier to understand than using full scale body sized mannequins. The skirts shown have a definite retro vibe, helped perhaps by some unusual fabric combinations. Fabric choice is all important, and most of the fabrics used are mid to heavy weight woven. For me, although my favourites are too short, instructions are there to lengthen them. Would I buy the book? Yes – for the pattern drafting, and components styles, rather than the sewing techniques. I’m excited to get my pattern paper and tackle the jeans style skirt, Bobbie (but longer!) -- M Jones * Amazon Customer Review *Clearly written and illustrated. I'm an experienced dressmaker but would usually only work from a pattern, this book has given me the confidence to make my own block and also inspired me experiment altering my existing patterns. -- Bernadette McGowan * Amazon Customer Review *The opening parts of the book give a comprehensive overview of the equipment needed and terms used in dressmaking. Although I have many years of experience in dressmaking, I have never tried to draft my own pattern and it was this part of the book I was most interested in. I found the instructions for making the basic skirt block easy to follow and then went on to make a toile as the author recommends. I carried on and then made up the toile into a proper garment as the fabric I'd picked was suitable and was very satisfied with it. Although I haven't yet made any of the other styles I have read the instructions and I'm confident I could make them successfully. I particularly liked the suggestions on customising touches such as the pockets and will definitely use these in the future, definitely a worthwhile buy. -- Hilary Guthrie * Amazon Customer Review *Table of ContentsIntroduction 6 How to use this book 8 Getting started 12 Basic sewing kit 12 Dressmaking essentials 15 Drafting tools 16 Fabricology 18 Your body, your block 22 What is a block? 24 What is a toile? 24 What details should I include? 25 Taking your own measurements 26 How to draw out your own block 28 Making a toile and checking the fit 32 Creating your skirt 37 Skirt shapes 38 Basic skirt 40 Pencil skirt 41 A-line skirt 42 Flared skirt 43 Box–pleated skirts 44 Gathered skirts 48 Fastenings & fixtures 52 Traditional waistband 54 Wrapped waistband 56 Facing 58 Zip fastenings 60 Button placket 64 Details & finishings 66 Patch pockets 68 Inseam pocket 70 Yoke 72 Yoke pocket 74 Back vent 78 Hems 80 Putting your skirt together 84 Skirt recipes 88 Monroe 88 Brodie 92 Pattie 96 Cecelia 100 Bobbie 104 Kate 108 Joni 112 Judy 116 Jasmine 120 Grace 124
