    4 in stock

Book SynopsisA guide to the increasingly popular trend of transforming data into beautiful textile art. This stylish and fascinating book from up-and-coming textile art star Jordan Cunliffe shows how raw data, maps and personal experience can be distilled into textile art, producing mesmerising works with deep meaning, whether obvious or hidden, and concentrating on the smaller, quieter moments that make up our lives. Jordan explores the use of stitched data to tell stories, pinpoint special places on maps, convey secret messages, and record personal detail, for example daily walks or nightly sleep patterns. Her finished work is beautifully precise, including a long strip of fabric containing a stitch for every day of her life, a reimagination of a favourite childhood book in unreadable code, and pleasing beaded representations of secretly important documents. Almost any aspect of your life can be represented in graph or map form, and here are many practical ways to achieve this, whether it's recording the colours of flowers on a favourite path to create your own unique palette, or encoding your most private thoughts in beaded morse code. This visually stunning book explores a new way of working and will help you explore a fresh new angle in your embroidery and textile work. • Fibershed: Growing a Movement of Farmers, Fashion

Chelsea Green Publishing Co Fibershed: Growing a Movement of Farmers, Fashion

    5 in stock

Book SynopsisA new "farm-to-closet" vision for the clothes we wear--by a leader in the movement for local textile economies There is a major disconnect between what we wear and our knowledge of its impact on land, air, water, labor, and human health. Even those who value access to safe, local, nutritious food have largely overlooked the production of fiber, dyes, and the chemistry that forms the backbone of modern textile production. While humans are 100 percent reliant on their second skin, it’s common to think little about the biological and human cultural context from which our clothing derives. Almost a decade ago, weaver and natural dyer Rebecca Burgess developed a project focused on wearing clothing made from fiber grown, woven, and sewn within her bioregion of North Central California. As she began to network with ranchers, farmers, and artisans, she discovered that even in her home community there was ample raw material being grown to support a new regional textile economy with deep roots in climate change prevention and soil restoration. A vision for the future came into focus, combining right livelihoods and a textile system based on economic justice and soil carbon enhancing practices. Burgess saw that we could create viable supply chains of clothing that could become the new standard in a world looking to solve the climate crisis. In Fibershed readers will learn how natural plant dyes and fibers such as wool, cotton, hemp, and flax can be grown and processed as part of a scalable, restorative agricultural system. They will also learn about milling and other technical systems needed to make regional textile production possible. Fibershed is a resource for fiber farmers, ranchers, contract grazers, weavers, knitters, slow-fashion entrepreneurs, soil activists, and conscious consumers who want to join or create their own fibershed and topple outdated and toxic systems of exploitation..Trade Review“Collectively, we’ve been slowly waking up to the urgent need to farm our food in ways that restore and regenerate soils and whole landscapes; create connections between people, land, animals, and seasons; and rebuild local economies. Fibershed turns our attention to a parallel, equally urgent frontier: our clothes. We need this book, and we need it now.”—Nicolette Hahn Niman, author of Defending Beef“Fibershed is a must-read for all clothing brands, whether years into their sustainability journey or just at the beginning. Burgess encourages us to think deeply and holistically about the impacts of fashion, reconsider our industry’s model of overconsumption, and to approach flashy biotech solutions with a critical eye. Fibershed proves that fashion can be a force for good, empowering farmers and makers while supporting local communities with Climate Beneficial textile supply chains.”—Megan Meiklejohn, Sustainable Materials and Transparency Manager, Eileen Fisher“Fibershed is a deeply informed exploration of the political ecology of clothing and an urgent invitation to a new way of being in the world; one that respects the soil, the cycles of the year, and life itself. In this visionary manifesto of hope, Rebecca Burgess chronicles a personal journey with profound global implications: Human economies need not result in the degradation of either human culture nor the environment, but might, if done well, lead to the enrichment of both.”—Jeffrey Creque, PhD, Director of Rangeland and Agroecosystem Management, Carbon Cycle Institute“This is an important book. It is bold, practical, optimistic––a vision of how things must be.”—Kate Fletcher, professor, Centre for Sustainable Fashion, University of the Arts, London, UK“Rebecca has made an incredible contribution to the slow fashion movement through her organizing and advocacy work with the Fibershed organization. I’m thrilled to know that this work is now available to a broader audience through this thoughtful book. May we all learn from her wisdom, research, and knowledge as we create even deeper connections between farms, fiber art, and fashion.”—Katrina Rodabaugh, author of Mending Matters“We clothe ourselves using fibers from cotton, trees, animals, and oil. The sins of oil-based fibers are well known, but lesser known are those of plant- and animal-based fiber production—themselves major contributors to global desertification and climate change. If we want to offer hope to future generations, we will have to root not only the food we eat, but the clothing we wear in a new, regenerative agriculture that manages livestock using the holistic planned grazing process. Fortunately, movement in this direction is underway. Rebecca Burgess’s well-researched book stokes a fire that has already been lit by many organizations collaborating and networking around the globe, and connects the dots between our clothing and our life-supporting environment. I would encourage everyone who wears clothes and has any concern for future generations to read this highly educational book.”—Allan Savory, president and cofounder, Savory Institute“Rebecca Burgess is the Alice Waters of the slow fiber movement. Within the pages of Fibershed, she proves that carefully clothing oneself is a revolutionary act. While many wait for distant corporations and governments to curb toxic, unethical, and extractive industrial practices, Burgess demonstrates that the revolution is at hand in our own backyards. Fibershed is required reading for any clothing company that claims environmental and ethical responsibility.”—Dan Malloy, surfing ambassador, Patagonia; cofounder, Poco Farm, Ojai, CA“Fibershed is a story of vision, persistence, and kindness. With patience and grace, Rebecca has restored a sense of gratitude for the overlooked grasses and herbaceous plants that were once our second skin. From the living world around her, she has stitched together the broken strands of textile arts, creating an economy of place where makers are artists and clothing is revered.”—Paul Hawken, author of Blessed Unrest; editor of Drawdown

  • Forage & Stitch: Using Natural Materials in

Search Press Ltd Forage & Stitch: Using Natural Materials in

    2 in stock

Book SynopsisFind a wealth of instruction and inspiration on how to incorporate naturally foraged materials into your artwork. In the process, discover a range of textile techniques – suitable for all levels and abilities – to complement your design. These include hand and machine stitching, solar dyeing, felting, hapa-zome and more. Using natural materials in textile art is way of connecting a place directly with its artistic representation, but it also makes the artist tap into and observe the true rhythms of the natural world: the seasons, the weather and time. Incorporating consciously foraged goods in art gently forces you to slow down, to take note of each season's bounty, and kindle – or rekindle – an awareness that we are all part of one big eco-system. Each technique forms one of many pillars of Caroline's large body of work, and she has carefully created eight projects, each introduced after a technique, so you can put your new skills into practice. Throughout, Caroline stresses the importance of taking your time and working organically, letting your foraged goods guide your design. This is an approach that not only encourages an intuitive creative process, but develops a more mindful, positive experience for the artist too. Interwoven with practical guidance and projects are Caroline's stunning gallery of works, offering inspirational examples of how to take your work farther, and simultaneously demonstrating nature's abundance and variety. This is an enriching book on textile and natural art that celebrates the maker's relationship with art and the natural world. Trade Review‘Nature is my safe space’ - Caroline Hyde-Brown The above opening words of this book drew me to its author immediately. As a fellow artist, I too have tasted the healing power that a walk in the outside world can provide. This artist has chosen a niche area to really hone in on, the idea of exploring…..with a point. Forage - to seek, to wander to search out supplies of some form. In this titles case, the subject matter within, chases us through many techniques which relate to the initial subject. When I use the word chase in this context, I am not suggesting that the author rushes the learning process, rather reading the books pages excited me enough to want to get on and begin experimenting myself - so it is a positive push via text and image. There are eight techniques with projects for each one; so effectively we can see what use learning a certain method can be for our own artistic practice. Imagine learning through clear instruction how to solar dye, felt, use foraged finds to naturally dye fabrics which can then be used for textile art projects…the one which really confused me in title is ‘Hapa-zone’ (with flowers and leaves). What is it?! I ask. Well, you too can glean your answer if you buy a copy! There is something very soothing about having a purpose on a walk, you become grounded in that moment, distracted from whatever life is nothing you with and suddenly all you are thinking about is location, where you are, what you and trying to find. What does the season say? With a stunning gallery of works to showcase Caroline’s beautiful life of embracing all that she loves and lacing it together via her art in this book, I personally found it one I would really use in my own practice. It fed my mind kindly, not too much to take in, not too arduous a method to trial. What is your nature relationship? Can you connect to it further via using the instructions Caroline vocalises to us through her pages? She classifies herself as a textiles research artist, so this has more body to it than the visual. She has traveled into other counties such as Japan to really experience various forms of life and art. In her words, art and healing can come together to be ‘one big creative adventure’. -- Ailish Henderson * ailishhenderson.com *Combine the power of the natural world with renowned textile artist Caroline Hyde-Brown's suggestions to stitch beautiful textiles creations. Using natural materials is a way to rekindle your connection to the outdoors and tap into the rhythms of the seasons, enabling you to be mindful and create at the same time. Caroline offers expert guidance on a range of techniques from hand and machine stitching, to solar dyeing, felting and Hapa-Some, with eight projects to try. -- Stitch Magazine * Issue 145 *The first time I saw this book I knew that I would love it, and I'm not disappointed. It's not only an instructional book but also a wonderful read. Just browsing through the pages makes me want to go foraging and try yet another technique. Caroline's instructions are clear and cover everything – particular items to look for in each season, how to prepare and store the items, natural dyeing and creating lovely artwork. Her love of both nature and stitching is clear to see on every page and I think anyone with similar interests will love this book as much as I do. -- Val Hatton * Customer Review *Have a few books on textiles, but there aren't so many that directly cover how to use nature in your work in this way. Had seen artist Caroline Hyde-Brown's beautiful work on Pinterest so decided to take a chance on this book - very glad I did. One of her strong points is that she shows you how to sew botanical material directly onto your work. This is quite a comprehensive book, it talks about how she relates to the landscape in Norfolk where she lives, how she goes out to forage, what she collects, processing and storing what is gathered, her work in notebooks, projects to try and then lots of very informative pictures of her fantastic work. I only had to get a few supplies (eg silk tulle, 100% Acetone, chiffon) the rest are things you would have in your stash (eg soluble backing). There is a section on dyeing small bits of fabric, free motion embroidery, image transfer, but also quite a few other techniques she uses like Hapa-zome. I think this book is a very nice balance between showing you her wonderful artwork and 'how to' techniques. She is generous with her knowledge because the book tells you exactly how to do it. So far I have tried the image transfers of trees from my own photographs (have to give it a few more goes to get it how I want). Can't wait to try the dried flower wall hanging and sewing fallen lichen onto work. So glad to have this book to work through over the coming months. Highly recommended if you want to use the natural world around you to incorporate into your work. -- Customer ReviewThis is the book for anyone who enjoys craft work and who cannot go for a walk in the countryside without coming home with a pocket full of ‘treasures’; acorns, interesting wood, leaves, and flowers, the author will help you find a use for them all. I have tried some of the dying methods and all have worked very well. The book is beautifully illustrated through and the instructions are easy to follow. -- Barbara Allan * Customer Review *Learn to incorporate naturally foraged materials into your artwork. Book SynopsisIf you want to make gorgeous, quality bags with the professional edge that really makes the difference between home-made and handmade—open The Better Bag Maker by Nicole Mallalieu. In this how-to book accomplished bag maker, Nicole Mallalieu, reveals her high-end techniques, shortcuts, and secrets for professional design and finishes. The 10 featured projects teach a range of expert skills from adjusting the proportion of the pattern to constructing pockets, straps, flaps, and bases.. By the end of this book, you’ll have a closetful of polished bags—and most likely sew better than you ever imagined you could.Trade ReviewBags are a popular project for sewists of all levels-they're a great way to showcase favorite fabrics, without all the fuss of garment fitting. The first third of Mallalieu's book focuses on step-by-step tutorials for techniques specific to sewing bags, such as choosing interfacing, preparing and attaching pockets (including zippered pockets), and attaching hardware such as snaps, clasps, purse feet, and strap rings. These lessons are followed by a basic tote pattern with detailed instructions, placing the techniques within the context of an actual bag pattern and allowing novices to build confidence. The other ten designs feature a variety of styles, from chic overnight bags to a stylish satchel to a convertible backpack-tote, and all of the patterns expand on the skills and methods covered at the beginning of the book. Pattern sheets are included. VERDICT While these plans are useful, the technique tutorials are the highlight here-they contain information that can be applied to many bag patterns, not just the ones in this collection. Sewists of every ability level will appreciate having a wealth of bag-making information in a single volume. Library Journal, March 2014 If you are going to purchase just one book on making bags, this should be it. It is comprehensive for all techniques required to make spectacular bags from zippers, handles, pockets, lining and more. This should also be a "must have" for any teacher that facilitates classes on making bags or totes. No doubt about it, with this book you'll definitely be a Better Bag Maker! sewcalgal.com, 4/13/14 Nicole is a bag-making expert and this book is perfect for the person who: a) likes bags. b) wants to make bags. c) wants to make bags that won't fall apart after a few uses. Is this you? Because it's definitely us. What's fun about The Better Bag Maker is that each bag tutorial in the book is a slightly-tweaked version of the same pattern. They start simple (hi, beginners) and end with fairly advanced techniques (we're looking at you, people-who-can-confidently-sew-zippers). Tools and materials are pretty basic (a functional sewing machine, scissors, fabric, interfacing), but Nicole definitely explains the what and how of all the extra goodies that will take your bag making to the next level. You'll learn how to use interfacing to reinforce your projects, how to add hardware, and why straps are important. Creative Bug, 6/16/14 Learn professional techniques, shortcuts, and secrets for making couture bags with this new book, The Better Bag Maker: An Illustrated Handbook of Handbag Design by Nicole Mallalieu. 10 skill-building projects, fully explained with detailed tutorials and illustrations, make this book a source of inspiration and instruction. Internationally recognized handbag designer and founder of the blog YOU SEW GIRL!, Nicole Mallalieu, shares her professional secrets, shortcuts, and techniques for sewing fashionable bags. FabShop News, June 2014 This book by Melbourne-based designer Nicole Mallalieu is a must have if you want to learn to make your own bags. Apart from the 10 fresh and modern projects-ranging from a simple tote bag to a denim weekender with zippered and twist-lock closures-it contains chapters about tools and materials (with a useful interfacing guide) and basic bag-making techniques, such as pockets, straps, bag bases and closures. The instructions are clear with lots of photos and illustrations. Down Under Quilts Magazine, June 2014 Nicole is an internationally recognized handbag designer, and here she shares with you her professional techniques shortcuts and secrets for making couture bags. Set apart a homemade bag from a handmade bag! The projects in this book are graded and ordered by degree of difficulty and will teach you a range of expert skills from adjusting the proportion of the pattern to constructing pockets, straps, flaps and bases. Quilter's Digest, June 2014 If you have an addiction to bags, like me, its a great plan to start creating your own. Learn how to make gorgeous, sturdy, purses and tote bags that you'll be proud to wear around town. These quality patterns make quality bags that are ideal for a wide variety of occasions and events. The Better Bag Maker by Nicole Mallalieu is the only book that you will need to learn how to make bags. This purse sewing pattern book is a comprehensive guide full of technique, tips, tricks, and simple-to-read patterns. AllFreeHolidayCrafts.com, June 23, 2014 I have been a fan and customer of Nicole Mallalieu's for several years. This book is like having her do a private class! The instructions are very clear and detailed and fun. The lesson plan is progressive - building each bag on previous lessons and the basics section. You won't be disappointed. I am an experienced bag maker, yet this book is full of great new tips. Everything is so clearly illustrated with drawings and photos. It is a terrific book for both those new to sewing, and those who have been sewing for decades. Highly recommended. Very pleased with the purchase, and a bargain, as the book has a full complement of patterns. Most handbag instruction books are those that are just bags, nothing special. This book shows quality well-made bags with very good instructions. I have been wanting to up my game with my bag making and this book will show me how. Chock full of techniques that will make my bags look like they were store bought, not handmade. Been studying and will get to work on a project soon. Can't wait. 8/11/14Table of ContentsIntroduction [chapter title]

Book SynopsisAn inspirational, practical guide by textile artist Letitia Thompson, the world of Mrs Bertimus! In this exciting new book Letitia shows you how to create colourful, contemporary, animal-themed stitched textiles with a quirky mix of vintage and whimsical style. Letitia's subjects range from playful, dancing mice to crafty foxes, their personalities skillfully captured in stitch using free-motion machine embroidery and hand stitching. The progression from idea to stitch is developed in easy stages, providing a valuable insight into the author's creative process and the methods she uses to achieve her stunning textile artworks. Starting with a comprehensive materials and techniques section, the book includes three step-by-step projects, templates, and numerous finished pieces to spark your creativity, resulting in a unique source of ideas and inspiration for textile artists of all abilities.Trade ReviewIt’s not often that you discover an artist who brings such sensitivity and originality to figurative machine embroidery but Mrs Bertimus (the pseudonym of artist Letitia Thompson) is one of this rare breed. In this book she explains how to create captivating animal stitched portraits using fabric collage, free-motion machine embroidery and a dash of hand stitch, where, ‘the thread becomes the pencil and the fabric becomes the paint.’ She breaks down the process into easy-to-follow steps, including lessons on, and insights into, sketching your subject, techniques and composition, and creating original work that tells a story through your choice of portraiture. There are three projects, but all of the examples in this book are a work of art in their own right that everyone will be able to recreate. * Embroidery - Issue 56 *This is a beautifully thorough book about the authors adorable and visually complex multi-media art work. She has given clear photographic step-by-step instructions to recreate her projects or inspire us to make our stitched textiles. Also included are steps and ways to personalize each piece with paint, distressing, stencils, stamps that give her work international recognition. I highly recommend her book for experts and beginners! Hope you enjoy it. -- Holly Angle * Amazon Customer Review *In this book, Mrs Bertimus takes the reader through her creative process, from materials and sketching to finished objects. There are three lovely projects to enjoy, with helpful templates included in the back of the book – I'm particularly excited about trying the little Sausage Dog art quilt. Before the projects, she goes into detail about the tools and techniques she uses to create her artworks so that the reader can create their own inspired by her work. The book is filled with examples from her sketchbooks and finished pieces, making it beautiful to just flick through and enjoy. I love her art style and am looking forward to applying many of the techniques to my own work -- Leanne Cane * Customer Review *I absolutely love Mrs Bertimus’ artwork and the way she lays down colours and textures. Her embroidery work is just an extension of her stunning paintings. The collages are so beautiful on the animals and there are step-by-step guides to follow along. As an artist who has never done machine embroidery before, I feel the instructions are so clear that I could actually give it a go myself. There are pattern pieces in the back but you could try this with your own artwork too. I can’t wait to see the new collection of goodies she has planned for the coming months. This book would make such a gorgeous gift for someone who loves to sew, draw, paint or craft. Buy two. You’ll want to keep one for yourself. -- Lindsay Elissa Coils * Customer Review *Letitia Thompson, also known as Mrs Bertimus, generously shares all the whimsy and wonder of her mixed media work. Whether you want to imitate her style or use it as a springboard to develop your own, there is plenty to satisfy. She carefully breaks down the stages and processes involved in her complex collaged pieces, offering invaluable insight and thoughtful tips. Words and images combine to guide you seamlessly through composition and construction. Her approach with sticky notes will enlighten, and the step-by-step projects will delight. * Stitch Magazine *If you think that all stitched animals are cute and twee, you haven’t seen the work of Letitia Thompson, aka Mrs Bertimus. Her drawing skills are amazing but no need to worry if you don’t draw, as templates are provided in this book. Mrs Bertimus is just as brilliant with art materials as she is with her sewing machine. In fact, her realisation that, with the darning foot on and the feed dogs down, she could turn her sewing machine into a drawing machine, made this book possible. After a very brief description of materials, the book moves straight into the nitty-gritty of technique, inspiration, design, and stitch. From colour mixing paints to working with a drawing, this section has some great ideas for getting the tonal values right. Having made a template and using those tonal values, we go through the process of building-up cut fabric pieces to translate them into stitch. Then it is machine embroidery and working the background. This is a great source of ideas – I love her backgrounds. The section on composition takes us through the nuts and bolts of this tricky subject: balance, orientation and trouble-shooting are well covered and could relate to any textile application. Mrs Bertimus has some excellent tricks to aid composition – but I won’t give the game away here. Suffice it to say that I will be adopting some of them myself. Backgrounds are an important part of any artwork and the ideas in this book could be used for painting or drawing as well as the appliqué shown. Blocks of colour and stitch combine to integrate the subject matter without intruding on the focal point. Paper collage, stitching into paper, gelli plate printing (which is used for design as well as stitch) are all covered. Ideas for using the results of these techniques are also shown. A chapter on ‘Telling a Story’ is useful and covers many examples of story sources and the use of the tales. All these are told in completed works. The final chapter on Projects includes templates for making some of the animals contained in the book. Full step-by-step instructions for their use can also be found here. My grandson is owned by Monty – a ‘sausage dog’ – and there just happens to be a dachshund template, so I might be turning out ‘the full Monty’ soon. All inspired by Mrs Bertimus. * d4daisy Books *Table of ContentsIntroduction Materials Where to start (Core techniques) Composition Going further (Advanced techniques) Telling a story Sausage Dog Midnight Fox Acrobat Mouse Afterword Templates Index

    2 in stock

Book SynopsisA comprehensive guide to more than 30 circular weaving techniques perfect for crafting unique and modern home décor. Artist and educator Emily Nicolaides demonstrates the wonderful possibilities of contemporary circular weaving in this one-of-a-kind guide for beginners and beyond! Before jumping into the projects and patterns, Emily gives a thorough overview of the basics, including detailed instructions on how to select materials and what tools you will need. She even includes instructions on fashioning and using DIY cardboard looms and shuttles. The projects are broken down into two parts: functional circular home goods and decorative circular wall hangings. In the introductions for each project, any necessary specifications like the number of warps or style of loom are noted. Budding weavers have the option to either follow projects exactly as they are laid out or to put their own unique twist on the concepts presented to craft something truly unique. Projects are marked beginner, intermediate, or advanced, making it easy for the everyone to progress through the book as they become more familiar with circular weaving.Trade ReviewThis comprehensive guide has over 30 techniques. Weavers can follow the projects exactly, or add their own unique twist. Projects are marked beginner, intermediate or advanced so it's easy to work through the book as confidence grows. * Machine Knitting Monthly *Covers all the basic information you need about how to set up the looms for weaving, with lots of colour illustrations and instructions clearly explained alongside each. Includes many projects as well that, even if you don’t want to do them, provide lots of inspiration as well as additional instructions. A fabulous book! * Customer Review *The book’s title is self-explanatory. It begins with tools and materials, including templates for a cardboard loom and shuttle. A clearer discussion of yarn weights is needed – ‘medium’ is not very helpful, especially to beginners. However, a supplement lists the yarns used in each project. Detailed instructions for warping rings follow, with only one project using a cardboard loom. The instructions throughout – mostly with colour photographs – are very clear and I found them easy to follow. The projects are divided into items for the home – bunting, cushions and mats, then wall hangings. They are varied and original and would tempt people to have a go. Requirements are clearly set out, followed by detailed instructions and tips and ideas to vary the project. The projects are graded in difficulty, however none is really suitable for very young children and a little previous weaving experience would be helpful. Most of the projects, and all the wall hangings, retain the rings used to weave them, which could prove expensive. I was impressed with the range of weaving techniques described, including tabby, twill, leno, soumak, inlay and rya. Supplements include a glossary of weaving terms and details of how to make the knots used in the book. This book would be a useful addition to Guild libraries, and for people crafting with children -- Judith Edwards, Eden Valley and Online Guilds * Association of Guilds for Spinners, Weavers and Dyers *Table of ContentsIntroduction Chapter One: Materials and Tools for Circular Weaving Chapter Two: How to Warp Any Hoop for Circular Weaving Chapter Three: Circular Weaving for Function Chapter Four: Decorative Circular Wall Hangings Index
