  • Stackpole Books Easy Lace Knits

Book SynopsisLove the look of lace but think it’s too complicated for the average knitter? Think again! With this book, Anniken Allis throws wide the door to lace for all knitters. Easy-to-learn lace patterns fool the eye into thinking they are far more complex than they actually are.Trade ReviewLove the look of lace but fear casting it on? Allis's 20 designs for shawls, tops, mitts and scarves may be just the antidote, as she starts at the very beginning--by defining lace as a simple series of increases and corresponding decreases. A stitch glossary of the various increase and decrease techniques is illustrated with photos so knitters can clearly see how each type contributes to the look of finished lace. Another novice-friendly feature of this book recognizes that knitters have different ways of understanding stitch patterns, and so Allis provides both written and charted versions for the lace stitches used. And because even experienced lace knitters can find it challenging to detect where their stitch count has gone awry, you'll find tips for ways to read your knitting and get your stitches back on track.

Book SynopsisSurround yourself with beautiful knits in every room in your house! Patterns are styled and grouped by room to create a unified look for your Living Room, Porch, Master Bedroom, Guest Bedroom, Office, Kid's Bedroom, and Nursery. All pieces are knit in bulky yarns and easy-to-learn stitch patterns, so you can be enjoying your knits in no time.Trade ReviewKnitting with giant yarn and fiber has been popular for years, but fat fibers can be quite expensive and difficult to care for. Knit and crochet designer Erin Black wants to make big projects more accessible and usable in the home, so her fun, done-in-a-flash, large-needle patterns use several strands of less expensive acrylic or cotton yarn held together to make huge stitches without a huge budget. It’s a technique that takes a little practice but, once mastered, makes it easy to fly through on-trend projects of all sorts. Designer Knit Home features twenty-four delightful, whimsical patterns in coordinated collections for different rooms of the home. The charming projects cover a variety of knitting techniques, including cables, lace, and color work. Stripes and textured stitches make easier patterns more interesting, and embellishments such as pom-poms and tassels add whimsy without too much work. Blankets (from a striped cable throw to a bed-sized blanket stitched to look like a panda), pillows, a footstool, a basket, and a hanging sling for a houseplant are all included. Perfect for people with large quantities of yarn in their stashes, these designs for the living room, garden, bedrooms, office, and nursery are sure to please knitters who are in a hurry but who want to make large, functional pieces. They might also inspire knitters to make their own giant yarn out of what they have on hand and alter patterns to suit their style, color preferences, and stashes. Designer Knit Home is a great way to get started knitting useful, pretty projects for the home. -- Sarah White * Foreword Reviews, November/December 2018 *

  • Big Yarn Beautiful Lace Knits

Stackpole Books Big Yarn Beautiful Lace Knits

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisLace gets a whole new look! Lace has traditionally been knit in finer weight yarns to create airy, delicate designs. But when knit in bulky yarns, lace becomes bold, graphic, and dramatic. Get those big needles and chunky yarn ready to roll!Trade ReviewWith big colourful pictures, and simple useful ‘how to' sections explaining what lace is, how to read a chart and some basic lace techniques, this book sets the scene beautifully. There are 20 patterns, all of them beautifully photographed. Unusually there are patterns for men and women in the same book. There are lots of different projects from hats, mitts and scarves through to shawls and a poncho. Lace knitting is usually linked to fine-weight yarns, but applying this technique to bulky yarns makes this a great way to try lace knitting. Often in a book like this I will find one or maybe two patterns that I’d like to try, but in this publication, there are lots I’d like to make. Surprisingly, the larger garments are the ones I’m drawn to, including a poncho and an open front vest The photography is well done, with multiple pictures of the same item from different angles, making it easier to choose which items you really want to make. Overall, this is a book I’d buy for myself. My only negative comment is the colour used on the abbreviations page makes it harder to read, when the idea was probably to make it easier. -- Natalie Tidy * Knitting & Crochet Guild - SlipKnot June 2020 *

  • The Punch Needle Handbook Easy guide to punching

Stackpole Books The Punch Needle Handbook Easy guide to punching

    7 in stock

Book SynopsisYou can pick up a punch needle and complete a project in less than an hour, with no prior skill needed. It requires just one easy-to-use tool, a background fabric, an embroidery hoop or frame, and yarn. Punched pieces make excellent wall hangings, pillows, ornaments, stool covers, chair cushions, purses/pouches, baby play mats, and much more!Trade ReviewPunch needle meets rug making in this inspiring book, showing you, from scratch how to master this versatile craft and produce a houseful of not only rugs but mats, wall hangings, coasters, bags and even jewellery. I was introduced to this absorbing and under valued craft at a show and have only used it with ordinary sewing thread to create details for garments so I was intrigued. Making rugs for me means hooking, but once you are familiar with the tools it is easy to see how the punching into a canvas type base is perfect for making rugs. This book takes you from total beginner to proficient and confident crafter a step at a time, informing you what you need to buy and how to use it. There are many different types of punch needle on the market (mine are a different type, used for fine embroidery) and a world of different yarns and threads to navigate. I like the way the author explains why you need an item, or what effect you will get if you use a certain yarn so you know what to buy to get the right results. The beginner section goes on to describe with the aid of photographic steps how to thread and use the needle, troubleshooting tips and rug finishing techniques. The projects are grouped into three sections for beginner, easy and intermediate. They all have a list of tools and materials, finished size in imperial and metric and text only instructions. There are large photographs of the items usually in situ, but if you want staged photographs you need to look back at the relevant section. At the back, all the patterns are provided, although some need to be enlarged. A few contact details are given for suppliers, but all these are in the US. This is a very user friendly book recommended for anybody who wants to learn the chunkier side of punch needle craft. -- Rachel A Hyde * myshelf.com *Yarn crafts, for me, are always fun. So when I discovered punch peedle I just had to have a go. This book is all about punch needle rug hooking. The projects are amazing and once you start you will soon get the Punch needle bug I promise you! This book is for beginners and advanced punch needlers alike. Set into sections for Beginners, Easy projects and Intermediate projects, there is something for everyone and is designed in a way that a beginner can advance their skills just by completing each project throughout the book. The Punch Needle Handbook tells you everything you need to know, so it really is like a tuition course. There are hints and tips on using your punch needle and how to create and achieve a fabulous piece of art using your yarn. It is also perfect for using up your yarn scraps to add interest to your project. From coasters to wall art, the projects are beautifully demonstrated and simple to do once you get going. • Stackpole Books Playtime Rompers to Knit

Book SynopsisTrade ReviewDoting grannies, friends or parents love to knit something for a newborn. I opened this book and had to smile at all the expressions of the babies and toddlers and then looked to see which pattern caught my eye. For me it has to be “pig”, a simple quick knit project in a DK yarn and there is also a hat to go with the romper which would make it a perfect outfit. Being quite a traditionalist I found some of the patterns a bit fussy and would have liked to see more everyday rompers in brighter colours with a greater range of stitches. The patterns are easy to follow with well written instructions and would be suitable for a knitter who is confident in all the basics. -- Monica Russel * Author and Knitwear Designer *

Book SynopsisSharing her passion for appliqué, experienced teacher and author Annie Smith teaches you everything you need to know to sew the quilt of your dreams! This colourful guide to hand and machine appliqué includes step-by-step techniques, plus advice on fabric selection, choosing supplies, and working with templates. Gain the confidence to design your own appliqué blocks and quilts, or flip to find several pretty patterns to get you stitching.Trade ReviewIf you want to learn how to do hand or machine appliqué this book teaches it from scratch, at least if you are already either a quilter or have some other sewing hobby. A lot of the text is from the author’s own point of view, and there is much said about being bold and saying “I can”. I am not a quilter myself and it was interesting to note how different the creative process is between confecting a (presumably heirloom quality) quilt and making clothes. The appliqué journey goes from getting ready for the creative process by taking photos, keeping a journal etc and thinking about choosing the right fabrics. There is a look at the equipment you will need (don’t be alarmed, I have done this for years and don’t own even a quarter of all this) and then instructions on how to do the various different methods of hand and machine appliqué. This is certainly an in-depth look, and there are plenty of staged photographs to show what the work looks like as you go. Further chapters take a look at designing quilts and quilt blocks, and I would suggest that the person who would get the most out of this book is a quilter rather than a dressmaker. There are some shapes to use in your own work, although there is also a section on copyright and doing your own work rather than appropriating somebody else’s. Finally there is a useful list of definitions and another with recommended websites and books. If you are wanting to create something special to be handed down through the family filled with special memories, then this book is full of useful information. If you cannot find a good range of sewing and quilting materials locally try http://www.searchpress.com for a list of suppliers. -- Rachel A Hyde * MyShelf.Com *

If you already know what to do then here is a more challenging book for improvers and up who are ready for some more intricate piecing fun. The projects include cushions and quilts of various sizes plus a backpack and wall hanging. Blocks are mostly square with a couple of rectangular ones so you can exchange the featured block for one of your choice in any of the projects. This is a lovely book with unusual and very on-trend patterns. -- Rachel A Hyde * myshelf.com *The sixteen 'Disney-like' characters; fairies, mermaids, unicorns etc. adorn cushions, quilts and wall hangings. The foundation piecing technique is explained well and shown in step by step photos. The colourful foundation sheets are in sections, each clearly numbered. The largest quilt, 43" x 59", has a castle, dragons, a magician and much more. Every stage is explained in words and diagrams. It also includes sashing and mitred corner binding.
