Book SynopsisThis book, based on extensive work in Russian archives, investigates how strategy, organisational rivalry and cultural factors came to shape naval developments in the Soviet Union, up to the invasion of 1941. Focussing on the Baltic Fleet, the author shows how the perceived balance of power in northern Europe came to have a major influence on Soviet naval policy during the 1920s and 1930s. The operational environment of a narrow inland-sea like the Baltic would have required a joint approach to military planning, but the Soviet navy''s weak position among the armed services made such an approach hard to attain. The Soviet regime also struggled against the cultural heritage of the tsarist navy and the book describes how this was overcome. In a special Appendix dedicated to the purges of 1937-38, surviving party records from the Baltic Fleet Intelligence Section are used to illustrate the mechanisms of the Great Terror at local level.Table of Contents1. Book SynopsisCaptain Bligh and the mutiny on the Bounty have become proverbial in their capacity to evoke the extravagant and violent abuse of power. But William Bligh was one of the least violent disciplinarians in the British navy. It is this paradox which inspired Greg Dening to ask why the mutiny took place. Part of the key lies in the curious puzzle of Mr Bligh's bad language.Trade Review'This is a marvellous magical mystery tour we are offered, written in an allusive and quicksilver prose - no bad language here.' Book SynopsisNEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLERNathaniel Philbrick is a masterly storyteller. Here he seeks to elevate the naval battles between the French and British to a central place in the history of the American Revolution. He succeeds, marvelously.--The New York Times Book ReviewThe thrilling story of the year that won the Revolutionary War from the New York Times bestselling author of In the Heart of the Sea and Mayflower. In the concluding volume of his acclaimed American Revolution series, Nathaniel Philbrick tells the thrilling story of the year that won the Revolutionary War. In the fall of 1780, after five frustrating years of war, George Washington had come to realize that the only way to defeat the British Empire was with the help of the French navy. But coordinating his army''s movements with those of a fleet of warships based thousands of miles away was next to impossible. And then, on September 5, 1

Book Synopsis“Superbly entertaining.”—S. C. Gwynne, best-selling author of Empire of the Summer MoonTrade Review"Jamie Malanowski has brought to life one of the great, little-known swashbucklers of the Civil War. A fun, exhilarating rush of a read, this is history told with the flair and panache of a great journalist." -- Nathaniel Philbrick, author of In the Heart of the Sea"It’s astonishing to me that I’d never heard of such an astonishing and very American hero. Will Cushing is like a character out of fiction or the movies—charismatic trouble-maker, patriot, half-mad can-do leader of men—and Jamie Malanowski beautifully tells the ripping yarn that was his remarkable life." -- Kurt Anderson, host of Studio 360 on NPR"Commander Will Cushing is a happy combination of one of the Civil War’s best tales and a writer whose taut, smart prose is up to the task of writing it. So much Civil War writing loses its luster in an ocean of sheer data. In Malanowski’s hands the narrative just drives forward, carrying you with it. A superbly entertaining book on a subject that, somehow, everyone else overlooked." -- S. C. Gwynne, author of Empire of the Summer Moon"Jamie Malanowski restores Cushing to his proper place in the first rank of American naval heroes in this fast-paced, rousing biography that illuminates both Cushing the man and the hero. Gracefully written and admirably nuanced, Commander Will Cushing makes a significant contribution to the naval history of the Civil War." -- Peter Cozzens, author of Shenandoah 1862: Stonewall Jackson’s Valley Campaign"Jamie Malanowski’s compelling history sheds new light on Will Cushing, a major naval hero of the Civil War who, but for a technicality, would have surely received the Medal of Honor. The Cushing name reverberates through those years, with four brothers serving the North, including Alonzo, a cannoneer who fell at Gettysburg. But this story is about Will, and it’s a corker." -- Larry Smith, author of Beyond Glory: Medal of Honor Winners in Their Own Words"[G]ripping, accessible… Malanowski’s nimble prose serves the action scenes perfectly and gives Cushing’s battles the weight and presentation they deserve… [H]as the page-turning excitement of a thriller…" -- Publishers Weekly, Starred review

Book SynopsisIt happened in the shadow of Pearl Harbor—mere hours after the first attack on the day that would “live in infamy.” But few know the full story of Wake Island. Now a prominent military historian, breaking new ground on the assault, relates the compelling events of that day and the heroic struggle that followed. Thanks to the brave Marines stationed there-and the civilian construction workers who selflessly put their lives on the line to defend the island-what was supposed to be an easy victory became a protracted and costly battle for Imperial Japan. This is the story of that battle, from survivors on both sides, and with a gallery of historic photos.Trade Review“John Wukovits has given this epic drama new meaning for a challenging time…. Pacific Alamo is an engaging, fascinating account of bravery in a desperate situation.”—WWII History “A remarkable chronology of a nearly forgotten episode in the early days of World War II… celebrates the heroism of the Marine defenders and the civilian construction crew that elected to stay and fight alongside the military.”—The Virginian–Pilot “[A] skillful blending of highly detailed research and a host of first-person accounts.”—Flint Whitlock, Author of The Fighting First: The Untold Story of the Big Red One on D-Day

    10 in stock

Book SynopsisFor Dutton Caliber's American War Heroes series, the riveting true account of the Battle of Tarawa, an epic World War II clash in which the U.S. Marines fought the Japanese nearly to the last man. In November 1943, the men of the 2d Marine Division were instructed to clear out Japanese resistance on the Pacific island of Betio, a speck at the end of the Tarawa Atoll. When the Marines landed, the Japanese poured out of their underground bunkers—and launched one of the most brutal and bloody battles of World War II.  For three straight days, attackers and defenders fought over every square inch of sand in a battle with no defined frontlines, and where there was no possibility of retreat—because there was nowhere to retreat to. It was a struggle that would leave both sides stunned and exhausted, and prove both the fighting mettle of the Americans and the fanatical devotion of the Japanese. Drawn from new sources, including participants’ letters and diaries and exclusive firsthand interviews with survivors, One Square Mile of Hell is the true story of a battle between two determined foes, neither of whom would ever look at the other in the same way again.

Schiffer Publishing Ltd The U S Naval Academy In Postcards In Postcards

Book SynopsisOne hundred years ago, the United States Naval Academy, in Annapolis, Maryland, the cradle of Navy and Marine Corps leadership, was in the midst of the most remarkable period of growth and change in its history. Its campus, known simply as The Yard, was expanded and the patchwork of old and dilapidated buildings housing it was replaced with magnificent new buildings befitting an institution of its caliber. This amazing renaissance fostered a golden age at the school in academics, training, athletics, and the advent of traditions that still exist today. Through images on over 475 postcards produced between 1900 and 1930, also the golden age of picture postcards, this book lets you see what the Academy and life there were like when midshipmen with names like Nimitz, Halsey, King, Spruance, Mitscher and Burke were among its residents.

Book SynopsisThis is the only work covering the history and lineage of Marine Attack squadrons, from the date of their activation forward, until their deactivation, or the present. Thoroughly researched, it has a complete, extensive bibliography, and the illustrations of the insignia are almost entirely from originals. Many of the photographs have never been published, and many are from the extensive photo archives of Northrup-Grumman. Historically accurate, yet lacking the dry recitation of names, dates, and facts found in other historical works, this very readable book is written to be enjoyed from cover to cover.

Book SynopsisThe thoroughly updated and enlarged edition of Flotilla is the result of impressive research on a forgotten chapter in the development of the young nation's naval and maritime tradition.Trade ReviewAs the 200th anniversary of the War of 1812 approaches, Donald Shomette's book, updated from a similar work published by him in 1981, is a most appropriate addition to the literature. -- Robert F. Dunn Washington Times 2009 Flotilla is valuable both to those interested in naval history, and to those focusing on small boat and irregular warfare strategies. I highly recommend it. -- Robert Farley Information Dissemination 2009 A rare look at the complex nature of the naval war and its impact on the inhabitants of Tidewater Maryland and the nation's capitol at Washington, D.C... Shomette details all of this with meticulous research in archives on both sides of the Atlantic. Past In Review 2009 Flotilla is a colorful, detailed history of Barney and his Sailors and the amphibiious war waged in the Chesapeake By in the summers of 1813 and 1814...
