Jacana Media (Pty) Ltd Roberts bird guide
Book SynopsisThe Roberts Bird Guide (2nd Edition) has gone to great trouble to concentrate on, and illustrate, difficult-to-identify species and family groups such as raptors, warblers, cisticolas and waders. Special attention has been given to make sure there is far greater coverage of male-female differences and there are also many more juvenile illustrations. Unlike all previously published southern African bird guides, this new edition will be scattered with informative photographs that are incorporated in the text pages and each plate illustration is augmented with an introduction. Apart from the approximately 240 plate spreads, the guide also has 12 photographic and illustrated double spreads that show head enlargements and other details. Plates are annotated far more definitively than other guides – highlighting key identification features, especially for difficult-to-identify species. Plates are richly illustrated with vignettes, which will make any birding experience more informative.

Book Synopsis'A delight and a triumph ... A thing of beauty ... Truly, truly magical' Mark Dolan, talkRADIOExpert science writer Giles Sparrow guides you through 21 stars you can see in the night sky and what they can teach us about our universe. On a clear evening, if you look up you can see thousands of stars shining in the dark sky, each with a story of their own. Taking 21 stars (and three imposters, that cheekily aren't technically stars), expert science writer Giles Sparrow offers a complete introduction to what is happening up in the night sky. Sparrow draws 'star maps' to help you easily identify the celestial bodies and then explains (for anyone not an astronomer themselves) what this particular pinprick of light can tell us about the birth, life and death of our universe. From red giants, quasars and supernovae to black holes, multiple stars and even our own Sun, this fascinating book tells the intriguing, inspiring and sometimes incredible story of how we came to unravel the mysteries of the cosmos, and what we learnt along the way. Island Press The Cougar Conundrum: Sharing the World with a
Book SynopsisThe relationship between humans and mountain lions has always been uneasy. A century ago, mountain lions were vilified as a threat to livestock and hunted to the verge of extinction. In recent years, this keystone predator has made a remarkable comeback with the help of enlightened wildlife management policies and protection under the Endangered Species Act. But its recovery has led to an unexpected conundrum: Do more mountain lions mean they’re a threat to humans and domestic animals? Or, are mountain lions still in need of our help and protection as their habitat dwindles and they’re forced into the edges and crevices of communities to survive? Carnivore expert Mark Elbroch welcomes these tough questions. He dismisses long-held myths about mountain lions and uses ground-breaking science to uncover important new information about their social habits. Elbroch argues that humans and mountain lions can peacefully coexist in close proximity if we ignore uninformed hype and instead arm ourselves with knowledge and common sense. He walks us through the realities of human safety in the presence of mountain lions, livestock safety, competition with hunters for deer and elk, and threats to rare species, dispelling the paranoia with facts and logic. In the last few chapters, he touches on human impacts on mountain lions and the need for a sensible management strategy. The result, he argues, is a win-win for humans, mountain lions, and the ecosystems that depend on keystone predators to keep them in healthy balance. The Cougar Conundrum delivers a clear-eyed assessment of a modern wildlife challenge, offering practical advice for wildlife managers, conservationists, hunters, and those in the wildland-urban interface who share their habitat with large predators.

Adventures Unlimited Press Hidden Agenda: NASA and the Secret Space Program
Book SynopsisSpace expert Mike Bara looks at the secret space programme of the American military that has been going on for over 60 years. Bara looks the Army Ballistic Missile Agency''s proposed Project Horizon which was a study to determine the feasibility of constructing a scientific / military base on the Moon. On June 8, 1959, a group at the Army Ballistic Missile Agency (ABMA) produced for the U.S. Department of the Army a report entitled Project Horizon, A U.S. Army Study for the Establishment of a Lunar Military Outpost. The permanent outpost was predicted to cost $6 billion and was to become operational in December 1966 with twelve soldiers stationed at the Moon base. Wernher von Braun, head of ABMA, appointed Heinz-Hermann Koelle to head the project team at Redstone Arsenal. Their plans called for 147 early Saturn A-class rocket launches to loft spacecraft components for assembly in low Earth orbit at a spent-tank space station. A lunar landing-and-return vehicle would have shuttled up to 16 astronauts at a time to the base and back. While officially Project Horizon was scrapped by the military - or was it? Bara looks into the secret space programme, the possibility of secret bases on the Moon and many rumours surrounding the military''s secret projects in space. The book will ask and answer many questions. Was Wernher von Braun involved in the Roswell crash investigation? Why did he suddenly become fascinated with highly advanced theoretical physics propulsion systems during the Apollo years, and why did all of this public research suddenly go black in the early 1960s? Did NASA and the Pentagon know and expect to find evidence of alien bases on the Moon? Did the Apollo 12 astronauts deliberately damage the TV cameras in order to hide their explorations of one of these bases? And much more including:What was the top secret Chapel Bell experiment on Apollo 16? Has teleportation been developed from captured alien technology and used to transport humans to secret NASA/DOD bases on Mars? Do space shuttle videos taken in the 1990s show proof of a highly advanced secret US space fleet? Does hacker Gary Mackinnon''s discovery of defense department documents identifying non-terrestrial officers serving in space mean that the US has secret space platforms designed to fight a war with an alien race? And, have these secret military space platforms been photographed by civilian observers here on Earth?

For comfort, he turned to his bookshelves, back to the ghost stories that obsessed him as a boy, and to the writers through the ages who have attempted to confront what comes after death. In Ghostland, Parnell goes in search of the sequestered places' of the British Isles, our lonely moors, our moss-covered cemeteries, our stark shores and our folkloric woodlands. He explores how these landscapes conjured and shaped a kaleidoscopic spectrum of literature and cinema, from the ghost stories and weird fiction of M. R. Profile Books Ltd The Moon: A History for the Future
Book SynopsisA Sunday Times must read book of 2019 'An out-of-this-world read ... brilliant and compelling. Morton is a high-octane British science journalist, and every chapter is littered with material that strikes, amazes or haunts ... this is a book filled not just with a lifetime's knowledge of its subject but with a lifetime's suppressed excitement.' James McConnachie, Sunday Times Every generation has looked up from the Earth and wondered at the beauty of the Moon. 50 years ago, a few Americans became the first to do the reverse - with the whole world watching through their eyes. In this short but wide-ranging book, Oliver Morton explores the history and future of humankind's relationship with the Moon. A counterpoint in the sky, it has shaped our understanding of the Earth from Galileo to Apollo. Its gentle light has spoken of love and loneliness; its battered surface of death and the cosmic. For some, it is a future on which humankind has turned its back. For others, an adventure yet to begin. Advanced technologies, new ambitions and old dreams mean that men, women and robots now seem certain to return to the Moon. What will they learn there about the universe, the Earth-and themselves? And, this time, will they stay?Trade ReviewAn out-of-this-world read ... brilliant and compelling. Sasquatch Books Every Penguin in the World: A Quest to See Them
Book SynopsisA husband and wife travel the globe to see all 18 penguin species in this “celebration of these delightful birds and a call for their conversation” that offers “joy, love, and hope for penguins and the world” (Dr. Jane Goodall). Every Penguin in the World tracks author-photographer Charles Bergman’s forays around the southern hemisphere—from the Galapagos to South Africa to the Antarctic—in his quest to see all 18 species of penguins in the world. The sections of the book are organized around themes of adventure, science and conservation, and pilgrimage—in which stories of each penguin species will be touched upon. This endearing and thought-provoking book beautifully combines narrative and photography to capture the plight and the experience of penguins worldwide. The author and his wife developed a passion after seeing their first penguin species and have since spent years traveling far and wide to see each variety of penguin in its natural habitat. Both a love letter and a call to action, Every Penguin in the World is a joyful ode to adventure, conservation, and the beautiful penguins that capture our hearts.“It's SO good! Quercus Publishing Dog is Love: Why and How Your Dog Loves You
Book Synopsis'Utterly compelling' Telegraph'Science finally reveals the dog's secret: the unique capacity for love that separates them from all other animals. Superb' - John Bradshaw, bestselling author of In Defence of Dogs and Cat Sense'If you want to build an even stronger bond with your own dog, this book is a must read' - Victoria Stilwell, author of The Secret Language of Dogs_______What makes dogs truly special? Why does our relationship with them feel so much more deep and intense than with other animals?Any dog owner knows that the bond with their dog is unique. The unparalleled loyalty and total devotion of a dog seems the stuff of true love - but is this a whimsical construction that bears little relation to reality? Through ground-breaking scientific experiments and eye-opening historical evidence, canine behavioural psychologist Dr Clive Wynne unlocks the secret to our unique bond with dogs: their capacity to love, an unprecedented attribute in the animal kingdom. In Dog is Love, Dr Wynne debunks the myth that dogs possess a unique form of intelligence. Instead, he shows that dogs are able to show sympathy and can respond to human emotions in a way that is truly remarkable. One particularly moving study shows that dogs' and their owners' hearts beat in synchrony, just as the hearts of a loving human couple do. Looking at the evolution of dogs, Dr Wynne points out that it was the wolves' ability to form relationships with mankind, becoming indispensable hunting companions, that enabled the depth of love and affection between dogs and humans that we know today. Dr Wynne shares his experiences of hunting with the Mayangna tribe in Nicaragua and the vital role played by their hunting dogs to shed light on what the early human-dog relationship might have looked like, and explains the science behind what really goes on when a young pup grows up in a human family. This is a delightful, heart-warming and fascinating analysis of the unique bond between humans and dogs, perfect for anyone who shares their home with their dog and wonders just how much they love you. It will change the way you interact with dogs and help you get the best out of them in a way that will be truly life-changing.Trade ReviewAn utterly compelling crossbreed of a book. Part love story, part detective story, it takes the reader on a journey round the globe and deep within canine DNA in order to discern the science behind these feelings of soppiness and to solve the ultimate mystery - why are dogs man's best friend? - TelegraphScience finally reveals the dog's secret: the unique capacity for love that separates them from all other animals. Superb. - John Bradshaw, author of 'In Defence of Dogs and Cat Sense'If you want to build an even stronger bond with your own dog, this book is a must read. - Victoria Stilwell, author of 'The Secret Language of Dogs'Dog Is Love is a riveting first-person account of how a behavioural scientist who was initially sceptical about animal emotions came to ask - and answer - the question, "What is it about dogs that makes them special?" Based on his own research as well as the latest findings in neuroscience, ethology, genetics, and animal welfare, Clive Wynne concludes that the bond between dogs and humans is based on their deep devotion to us. Part memoir, part scientific detective story, and part call to action, this book will change the way you look at dogs. - Hal Herzog, author of 'Some We Love, Some We Hate, Some We Eat: Why It's So Hard To Think Straight About Animals'Dog Is Love is a lively and fascinating mash-up of science, memoir and anecdotes that reveals a simple and yet enormously profound insight: dogs are unique because they love us. That conclusion sounds obvious. It's not. Canine behaviourist Clive Wynne takes the reader on a vast, yet accessible journey through the genetics, the evolutionary theories, the science-and the mystery-of why and how this happened. Wynne doesn't shy away from challenging popular theories about dog behaviour and evolution, from detailing the brutal realities of dogs languishing in shelters across the United States, or from critiquing the ways in which we mythologize dogs and do them a disservice. But the reader comes away from Dog Is Love better informed, oddly cheered-and with a new and deeper appreciation for our amazing canine companions and their enormous capacity for love. - Cat Warren, author of the NYT bestseller 'What the Dog Knows'Fascinating ... this delightful analysis of canine devotion will change the way you see your canine companion forever. - Countryside Magazine

Wits University Press African Ark: Mammals, landscape and the ecology
Book SynopsisAfrica is home to an amazing array of animals, including the world’s most diverse assortment of large mammals. These include the world’s largest terrestrial mammal, the African elephant, alongside a host of hooved mammals such as hippopotamuses, giraffes, rhinoceroses, and zebras. African Ark: Mammals, Landscape and the Ecology of a Continent tells the story of where these mammals have come from and how they have interacted to create the richly varied landscape that makes up Africa as we know it today. It also highlights small mammals, such as rodents and bats, which are often overlooked by both naturalists and zoologists in favour of their larger cousins. African Ark explains the processes through which species and population groups are formed and how these fluctuate over time. It explores the impact of megafauna on the environment and the important roles they play in shaping the landscape. In this way, mammals such as elephants and rhinoceros support countless plant communities and the habitats of many smaller animals. The book brings in a human perspective as well as a conservation angle in its assessment of the interaction of African mammals with the people who live alongside them. African Ark is at once scientifically rigorous and an engaging read for anyone dedicated to the understanding of Africa and its wildlife.Table of Contents List of plates List of tables and figures Acknowledgements Foreword by Dr Duncan MacFadyen Prologue: Mammals and Landscapes – the Evolution of a Continent Chapter 1 A Continent of Plenty Chapter 2 The Species Conundrum Chapter 3 The History of Africa’s Mammals Chapter 4 Islands as Species Factories Chapter 5 Evolution on the African Mainland Chapter 6 Giant Mammals Shaping the Landscape Chapter 7 A Place for Every Species Chapter 8 Fluctuating Populations Chapter 9 The Human Factor Chapter 10 The Sinking Ark? Michael O'Mara Books Ltd The Inn at the Top: Tales of Life at the Highest
Book SynopsisThe delightful tale of a young couple who in the late 1970s, on impulse, became the new landlords of the most remote, bleak and lonely pub - The Tan Hill Inn - located in the desolate landscape of the Yorkshire Dales. Having seen an article in the newspaper about the pub's search for a new manager, they arrived just three weeks later as the new landlords of the The Tan Hill Inn. It is a wild, wind-swept place, set alone in a sea of peat bog and heather moorland that stretches unbroken as far as the eye can see. With only sheep and grouse for company, their closest neighbour was four miles away and the nearest town twelve. They had no experience of licensed trade or running a pub, no knowledge of farming and a complete inability to understand the dialect of the sheep farmers who were their local customers. Eager, well-meaning, but in over their heads, our two heroes embarked on a disaster-strewn career that somehow also turned into a lifelong love affair with the Dales. The Inn at the Top is an entertaining ramble around the Inn, the breath-taking Dales countryside and a remarkable array of local characters, giving an insight into life in a very different different time and place.Trade ReviewA tribute to a way of life which is long gone and a celebration of the Dales * Yorkshire Post *Neil Hanson's anecdote-laden memoir is reminiscent of James Herriot * The Dalesman *One of the funniest, most entertaining and life-affirming books of the year...
