Temple University Press,U.S. Rebuilding Community after Katrina
Book SynopsisRebuilding Community after Katrina chronicles the innovative and ambitious partnership between Cornell University's City and Regional Planning department and ACORN Housing, an affiliate of what was the nation's largest low-income community organization. These unlikely allies came together to begin to rebuild devastated neighborhoods in New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina. The editors and contributors to this volume allow participants' voices to show how this partnership integrated careful, technical analysis with aggressive community outreach and organizing. With essays by activists, organizers, community members, and academics on the ground, Rebuilding Community after Katrina presents insights on the challenges involved in changing the way politicians and analysts imagined the future of New Orleans' Ninth Ward. What emerges from this complex drama are lessons about community planning, organizational relationships, and team building across multi-cultural lines. The accounts presented i

University of Massachusetts Press The Great Gypsy Moth War: A History of the First
Book SynopsisIn The Great Gypsy Moth War, Robert J. Spear presents the untold story behind the importation and release of the gypsy moth in North America and the astonishing series of coincidences that brought the state of Massachusetts to a decade-long war against this tenacious insect. Spear traces the events leading up to the beginning of the war in 1890, notes the causes of its failure, and shows the terrible legacy it left as the precedent for all subsequent insect-eradication campaigns. During the Civil War, when the supply of cotton from southern fields was disrupted, the owners of northern textile mills looked elsewhere for raw fiber. One source was silk. Among those experimenting with silkworm production was a Frenchman named Etienne Leopold Trouvelot, who had settled outside of Boston. It was Trouvelot who imported the gypsy moths and inadvertently allowed them to escape. Soon the invasion was on and a counteroffensive was required. Spear reveals the turbulent undercurrents in the eradication campaign when the enthusiasm of the entomologists in charge turned into desperation on the discovery that their alien adversary was much tougher than they thought. Fighting a war they could not win and dared not lose, the leaders of the campaign resorted to political maneuvering, cheap tricks, and outright misrepresentation to maintain a facade of success, urging the Commonwealth to continue funding the war long after any chance of victory had faded. More than just reviewing the important events of this historic episode, Spear tells the story in an engaging way, often through the firsthand accounts of those who were directly involved. Much of what Spear has written is new, the recounting is lively, and the information he presents shows that almost all of the previous beliefs about the campaign to eradicate the gypsy moths are myths. In the process, he also traces the rise of modern economic entomology and the birth of the pesticide industry.Trade ReviewControl of invasive species has become a major issue in ecology and policy circles in the last decade. Spear's book is precisely the kind of solid historical work that can aid citizens and policymakers to interpret contemporary debates more effectively. - Philip J. Pauly, Rutgers University

Smithsonian Books Volcanoes and Earthquakes: A Guide To Our Unquiet
Book SynopsisConcise and engaging visual guide to Earth's most devastating natural forces: earthquakes, volcanoes, and plate tectonicsOne in 20 people in the world live within range of an active volcano. On average, Magnitude 2 and smaller earthquakes occur several hundred times a day worldwide. Volcanoes and Earthquakes explores the massive natural forces from within the Earth that greatly affect its surface, often with dramatic and long-lasting consequences.Written in an accessible style, and fully illustrated with photographs, diagrams, and maps, the book explains the violence of earthquakes and volcanoes that impact humankind, and the gradual continental drift and mountain building that have transformed the Earth over the 4.5 billion years of its existence. It details the processes that have and continue to form, destroy, and move the Earth's surface. The authors describe how the Earth formed, from the beginnings of the solar system to the growth of the continents as they are today, and delve deep into the Earth's core to explore what drives the plates and feeds volcanoes. The last chapter examines the changes in the tectonic processes that link the Earth's mass, water, atmosphere, and life, including the effects on climate, sea-level, and the distribution of plant and animal species. Volcanoes and Earthquakes is a powerful reminder of the impact of natural forces on our everyday lives.

Chicago Review Press Soul of the Hurricane: The Perfect Storm and an
Book Synopsis"Soul of the Hurricane is a remarkable debut from a singular storyteller.” —David Isay, Peabody Award–winning creator of StoryCorps Nelson Simon didn’t want to sign up as a last-minute crew member to transport a Norwegian schooner from Brooklyn to Bermuda. But one thing led to another, and there he was. He told himself that it would be a sort of pleasure cruise: a week in the Gulf Stream with a gourmet chef on board, some down time on a tropical island, then a quick flight home. What did it matter that he had practically no sailing experience? The eight other crew members had plenty—they just needed an extra pair of hands. What could possibly go wrong? It was October 1991, and the ship was Anne Kristine, the oldest continuously sailing vessel in the world. What awaited them was Hurricane Grace, the southern end of what came to be known as the “Perfect Storm.”Soul of the Hurricane tells an unlikely tale that begins with an unexpected invitation and ends in the dead of night somewhere far from home, with a Coast Guard helicopter above and a dark, angry sea below.Trade Review"In Soul of the Hurricane Nelson Simon has written an epic page turner. In turns thrilling and lyrical, Simon's book is a meditation on beauty, courage, and loss. It is a work infused with history and heart that envelops you in its many wonders. Soul of the Hurricane is a remarkable debut from a singular storyteller." David Isay, Peabody Award--winning creator of StoryCorps" Soul of the Hurricane by Nelson Simon is a thundering memoir of extraordinary grace and character. Simon is a gifted wordsmith whose deft and concise writing style is the calm before the storm of a heart-pounding adventure that snatches the reader into a swirling rush of exhilarating emotion. This book is a well-paced masterpiece of great storytelling. Not of some heroic figure, but of someone like you or me. You are left with an awe of happenstance, and a wonder of how life unfolds as a mysterious cache of the unforeseen." Bill Mosher, founder and producer of Visionaries on PBS"With Soul of the Hurricane , accidental sailor Nelson Simon deftly weaves a compelling story about a "perfect storm" of powerful forces: Hurricane Grace, famed explorer Norman Baker, and the inexorable draw of the soul toward risk and adventure." Amy Eddings, host/producer at Ideastream Public Media"Nelson Simon's memoir reminds the reader that those who go down to the sea in ships are a complex and varied lot: skillful, determined, hapless, obsessed. Men and women who are at the mercy of accident and fate as surely as they are tossed about by wind and waves. Soul of the Hurricane is the kind of character-driven, storm-battered, seafaring yarn Joseph Conrad would have loved. Or written." Alice McDermott, author of The Ninth Hour and Charming Billy , winner of the 1998 National Book Award for Fiction"Readers who love sea adventures will revel in the drama of this very personal narrative." Texas Tech Press,U.S. Bad Smoke, Good Smoke: A Texas Rancher's View of
Book SynopsisFrom his home on the Texas Panhandle, John R. Erickson, rancher and author of the bestselling Hank the Cowdog series, saw firsthand the raw power of two megafires that swept across the high plains in 2006 and 2017. "These were landmark events that are etched onto the memory of an entire generation and will be passed down to the next. They made the old-time methods of fighting fire with shovels, wet gunny sacks, and ranch spray rigs a pathetic joke."Yet Bad Smoke, Good Smoke, while relating a tale of gut-wrenching destruction, also provides a more nuanced view of what is often a natural event, giving the two-sided story of our relationship with fire. Not just a first-hand account, Bad Smoke, Good Smoke also synthesizes and explains the latest research in range management, climate, and fire. Having experienced the bad smoke, Erickson tries to understand a rancher's relationship to good smoke and to reconcile the symbiotic relationship that a rancher has with fire.Evocatively chronicled, Erickson tells what it is like trying to stop the unstoppable: Bad Smoke, Good Smoke gives voice to the particular pains that ranchers must face in our era of climate change and ever more powerful natural disasters.

Guernica Editions,Canada Surviving the Apocalypse Volume 27: Understanding
Book SynopsisAlmost daily scientists are sounding dire warnings about the effects of climate change. Our young will bear an unprecedented burden. They are eager to discover what can be done, as time slips away. But few of them – or us – are aware that global warming is but one facet of a looming planetary catastrophe. Most of the natural and social systems humans depend on for survival are also in various stages of collapse. Each failure will impact the other systems, including climate, in a series of feedback loops that can unleash a virtual tsunami of destruction, and do so far sooner than climate scientists, looking only at their own discipline, predict. The corona virus pandemic has shown how unprepared we are. Multiply its effects times 10, times 50, to get an idea of what's coming. We have entered what scientists term a "critical state," at the brink of an unstable precipice. The smallest push or pull, from any direction, could suddenly topple us. Despite the global scale of the emergency, its root causes are predominantly human and surprisingly simple. With courage to act, we can slow the devastating cascade and, perhaps, even reverse some of the worst impacts.
