  • Who is A Brahmin

Manohar Publishers and Distributors Who is A Brahmin

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisBrahmins, originally in charge of the sacred sphere, followed different paths, creating therefore, within the community, many subcultures and ways of apprehending the world. From textual definitions to socio-economic adjustments, political influences and historical evolution, they went through multiple processes of identity building. Brahmin identity is indeed not an absolute notion. The various manifestations of Brahminical identities have to be pictured in contexts defined in connection with specific expressions of otherness. This book aims at understanding this dialogue between identity and otherness, creating phenomena of differentiation. The relations to a Brahmin model, the strategies to remain part of the elite, the discourses on secularism and casteism and identity repercussions of reservation policies in favour of backward populations are some of the factors which can elucidate the construction of such separate identities. So who is a Brahmin?

Book SynopsisDespite its comparatively monolithic-constitutive base in terms of a Han majority, China incessantly struggles to establish its legitimacy, both domestically and internationally, Towards this endeavor, China is increasingly relying on manifestation of soft-power techniques by creating a cultural ambience of the peaceful rise of China to achieve its nationalistic goals, further reinforced by an endemic discourse of nationalism. This work identifies a range of structural as well as personality factors which continue to shape the trajectory of domestic Chinese nationalism and its projection internationally. Beginning with the delineation of nationalism as understood by China's political leadership such as Sun Yatsen and Mao Zedong, a detailed analysis of the Chinese public and sphere in terms of its Internet, Literature, Cinema and Sports, especially the Beijing Olympics in 2008, has been made. The book will be of enduring interest to both scholars and students of Chinese as well as practitioners and policymakers interested in China.Table of ContentsAcknowledgements Abbreviations 1.Introduction Nations and Nationalisms Contemporary Perspectives on Chinese Nationalism Discursive Frameworks and Chinese 2.The Nationalist Stalwarts Discourse of the Century of Humiliation Sun Yatsen: The First Modern Patriot Chiang Kai-Shek: The Forgotten Nationalist The May 4th Movement and its Implications on Nationalism The Second Japanese Invasion of China Mao Zedong and His Brand of Nationalism Deng Xiaoping and His tete-a-tere with Nationalism Nationalism in the Post-Deng Era: Deconstructing the White papers The Party as an Institution Propagating Nationalism PLA as an Agent of Nationalism Social Processes and Nationalism Nationalism and Identity Issues Contemporary Chinese Nationalism:"The Manifestation of a Pragmatic and Eclectic Discourse" 3.Nationalism in the Cultural Sphere Conceptualising the Realm of the "Public" Chinese Public Sphere and Construction of the Nation Tiananmen and the Inhibition of Public Space State and the Public: Accommodation or Manipulation? • Oxford University Press, USA When Nationalism Began to Hate Imagining Modern Politics in NineteenthCentury Poland

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisIn When Nationalism Began to Hate, Brian Porter offers a challenging new explanation for the emergence of xenophobic, authoritarian nationalism in Europe. He begins by examining the common assumption that nationalist movements by nature draw lines of inclusion and exclusion around social groups, establishing authority and hierarchy among one''s own and antagonism towards others. Porter argues instead that the penetration of communal hatred and social discipline into the rhetoric of nationalism must be explained, not merely assumed. Porter focuses on nineteenth-century Poland, tracing the transformation of revolutionary patriotism into a violent anti-Semitic ideology. Instead of deterministically attributing this change to the forces of modernization, Porter demonstrates that the language of hatred and discipline was central to the way modernity itself was perceived by fin-de-siècle intellectuals. The book is based on a wide variety of sources, including political speeches and posters, newspaper articles and editorials, underground brochures, published and unpublished memoirs, personal letters, and nineteenth-century books on history, sociology, and politics. It embeds nationalism within a much broader framework, showing how the concept of the nation played a role in liberal, conservative, socialist, and populist thought. When Nationalism Began to Hate is not only a detailed history of Polish nationalism but also an ambitious study of how the term nation functioned within the political imagination of modernity. It will prove an important text for a wide range of students and researchers of European history and politics.Trade Review"Porter's (stimulating and provocative study) is subtle and careful in the way it defines and describes. His work makes an important contribution to understanding Polish (and, indeed, east central European) nationalism and successfully revises some traditional interpretations and stereotypes. * Choice *Brian Porter is an eminent specialist in the history of Polish national consciousness. He has managed to objectively describe the complex genesis and the historical context of Polish nationalism. This work offers a new way of looking at the fundamental problem for all of Central and Eastern Europe. * Adam Michnik, Editor-in-Chief, Gazeta Wyborcza, Warsaw *the book is a very welcome addition to the historiographies of both Poland and nationalism, brining an expanded base of sources, fresh hypotheses, and skillful discussion to familiar topics. Book SynopsisDuring the Paris Peace Conference of 1919, while key decisions were debated by the victorious Allied powers, a multitude of smaller nations and colonies held their breath, waiting to see how their fates would be decided. President Woodrow Wilson, in his Fourteen Points, had called for a free, open-minded, and absolutely impartial adjustment of all colonial claims, giving equal weight would be given to the opinions of the colonized peoples and the colonial powers. Among those nations now paying close attention to Wilson''s words and actions were the budding nationalist leaders of four disparate non-Western societies - Egypt, India, China, and Korea. That spring, Wilson''s words would help ignite political upheavals in all four of these countries. This book is the first to place the 1919 Revolution in Egypt, the Rowlatt Satyagraha in India, the May Fourth movement in China, and the March First uprising in Korea in the context of a broader Wilsonian moment that challenged the existing iTrade ReviewManela has produced an immensely rich and important work of comparative politics. * Pankaj Mishra, London Review of Books *This book will undoubtedly be definitive.... 15 in stock

Book SynopsisNationalism is a dominating force in contemporary politics, but political philosophers have been markedly reluctant to discuss, let alone endorse, nationalist ideas. David Miller here defends the principle of nationality. He argues that national identities are valid sources of personal identity; that we are justified in recognizing special obligations to our co-nationals; that nations have good grounds for wanting to be politically self-determining; but that recognizing the claims of nationality does not entail suppressing other sources of personal identity, such as ethnicity. Finally, he considers the claim that national identities are dissolving in the late twentieth century. This timely and provocative study offers the most compelling defence to date of nationality from a radical perspective.Trade ReviewClearly written and argued, it contributes much to the current focus on nationalism * Choice *Table of Contents1. Book SynopsisNationalism has become the most prevalent source of political conflict and violence in the world. Scholarship has provided scant guidance about the prospects of containing the dark side of nationalism-its widely publicized excesses of violence, such as ethnic cleansing and genocide. Departing from the usual practice of considering only a few examples of nationalism drawn from a limited geographical and historical canvas, this book is based on fundamental theoretical ideas about the formation and solidarity of groups. Containing Nationalism offers a unified explanation of the dynamics of nationalism across the broad sweep of time and space. Among other things, it explains why nationalism is largely confined to modern history, why it is supported by specific forms of inequality between cultural groups, and why it is inclusive at sometimes and exclusive at others.Nationalism is the attempt of culturally-distinct peoples to attain political self-determination. Random House USA Inc Say Nothing

Book SynopsisNEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • From the author of Empire of Pain—a stunning, intricate narrative about a notorious killing in Northern Ireland and its devastating repercussions.Masked intruders dragged Jean McConville, a 38-year-old widow and mother of 10, from her Belfast home in 1972. In this meticulously reported book—as finely paced as a novel—Keefe uses McConville''s murder as a prism to tell the history of the Troubles in Northern Ireland. Interviewing people on both sides of the conflict, he transforms the tragic damage and waste of the era into a searing, utterly gripping saga. —New York Times Book ReviewJean McConville''s abduction was one of the most notorious episodes of the vicious conflict known as The Troubles. Everyone in the neighborhood knew the I.R.A. was responsible. But in a climate of fear and paranoia, no one would speak of it. In 2003, five years after an accord brought an uneasy peace to Northern Ireland, a set of human bones was discovered on a beach. McConville''s children knew it was their mother when they were told a blue safety pin was attached to the dress--with so many kids, she had always kept it handy for diapers or ripped clothes.Patrick Radden Keefe''s mesmerizing book on the bitter conflict in Northern Ireland and its aftermath uses the McConville case as a starting point for the tale of a society wracked by a violent guerrilla war, a war whose consequences have never been reckoned with. The brutal violence seared not only people like the McConville children, but also I.R.A. members embittered by a peace that fell far short of the goal of a united Ireland, and left them wondering whether the killings they committed were not justified acts of war, but simple murders. From radical and impetuous I.R.A. terrorists such as Dolours Price, who, when she was barely out of her teens, was already planting bombs in London and targeting informers for execution, to the ferocious I.R.A. mastermind known as The Dark, to the spy games and dirty schemes of the British Army, to Gerry Adams, who negotiated the peace but betrayed his hardcore comrades by denying his I.R.A. past--Say Nothing conjures a world of passion, betrayal, vengeance, and anguish.Look for Patrick Radden Keefe''s latest bestseller, Empire of Pain.
