Cambridge University Press Fatherlands
Book SynopsisFatherlands explores the nature of identity in nineteenth-century Germany, and has crucial implications for our understanding of nationalism, German unification and the German state in the modern era. It approaches these questions from a new angle, that of the non-national territorial state, exploring the state-building process in non-Prussian Germany.Trade Review'… it will be a great success which will make many stimulating contributions to early modern and modern European history … elegant, persuasive, and eminently readable … Abigail Green has succeeded in moving the goal posts for any enquiry into the growth of nationalism and the persistence of particularism in Germany in the second half of the nineteenth century.' Cambridge University Press Nations The Long History and Deep Roots of Political Ethnicity and Nationalism
Book SynopsisWhat are the origins of nationalism and why is it capable of arousing such intense emotions? In this major study, Azar Gat counters the prevailing fashionable theories according to which nations and nationalism are modern and contrived or 'invented'. He sweeps across history and around the globe to reveal that ethnicity has always been highly political and that nations and national states have existed since the beginning of statehood millennia ago. He traces the deep roots of ethnicity and nationalism in human nature, showing how culture fits into human evolution from as early as our aboriginal condition and, in conjunction with kinship, defines ethnicity and ethnic allegiances. From the rise of states and empires to the present day, this book sheds new light on the explosive nature of ethnicity and nationalism, as well as on their more liberating and altruistic roles in forging identity and solidarity.Trade Review'… the book provides a stimulating challenge, in particular in its historiographical survey of premodern nations … Recommended. Upper-division undergraduate, graduate, and research collections.' P. J. Howe, Choice'Nations is a stimulating and valuable addition to the canon on nationalism. Gat's work will be valuable for seasoned scholars as well as students prepared to engage deeply with their source material.' Reviews in History (history.ac.uk/reviews)'Gat's motivation for writing this important book was his 'deep dissatisfaction' with the portrayal of nations and nationalism in much scholarly literature as 'recent and superficial' …' Jack Snyder, Journal of Interdisciplinary HistoryTable of Contents1. Cambridge University Press Germans to Poles Communism Nationalism and Ethnic Cleansing after the Second World War New Studies in European History
Book SynopsisAt the end of the Second World War, mass forced migration and population movement accompanied the collapse of Nazi Germany's occupation and the start of Soviet domination in East-Central Europe. Hugo Service examines the experience of Poland's new territories, exploring the Polish Communist attempt to 'cleanse' these territories in line with a nationalist vision, against the legacy of brutal wartime occupations of Central and Eastern Europe by Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union. The expulsion of over three million Germans was intertwined with the arrival of millions of Polish settlers. Around one million German citizens were categorised as 'native Poles' and urged to adopt a Polish national identity. The most visible traces of German culture were erased. Jewish Holocaust survivors arrived and, for the most part, soon left again. Drawing on two case studies, the book exposes how these events varied by region and locality.Trade Review'A magisterial overview of forced population movements across all of Eastern Europe at the end of the Second World War and in its aftermath. Service's monograph thus serves as a highly useful introduction to the phenomenon for non-specialist historians and social scientists with limited familiarity with the phenomenon, even as the detailed case studies are essential reading for researchers in this burgeoning field of study.' James Bjork, Slavonic and East European Review'In this admirable new book, 'Germans' did not become 'Poles' but were banished, silenced, or murdered by them … Germans to Poles deepens recent study of the long-neglected destruction of German life in eastern Europe … Service supplies valuable and student-friendly chapters.' William W. Hagen, Slavic Review'… specialists in the field of postwar Eastern European history will value the richness of the book's narration of the disorder and disruption that defined everyday life in early postwar Poland …' Michael Meng, The American Historical Review'Service offers an extensively researched synthesis which brings to light significant archival materials on the population movements that remade a broad swathe of Central Europe. From the vantage point of two small and contrasting centres, Service helps his scholarly readership understand mechanisms that made ethnic cleansing a part of everyday life.' Andrew Demshuk, European History Quarterly'[Hugo Service] knowledgably places Poland's state-driven policy of resettlement and expulsion … within the long-term national conflicts between Germany and Poland from the time [of] the Kaiser's Empire though to the post-WWII years … With [his] important stud[y] … Service ha[s] rightly drawn attention to the fact that only by accepting this chronology is the contextualisation … and, ultimately, a pluralisation of memory possible.' Björn Hofmeister, translated from Zeitschrift für Geschichtswissenschaft'Services's work excels at painting a vivid portrait of … communities in flux. … [He] provides excellent on-the-ground details of these myriad local tensions … Germans to Poles serves as a useful comparative study that relates the violent remaking of east central Europe along ethno-national lines to the diverse local-level consequences of this grand project.' Brendan Karch, German History'Hugo Service's monograph is a significant step forward to a better understanding of the complicated migration and nationalization processes that were under way in Poland's northern and western territories between 1939 and 1949 … The book is clearly written and structured and will therefore reach out not only to academics from the field but also to a more general public … One of the most excellent features of the book is its rich archival base.' Jan Musekamp, Polish-Studies.Interdisciplinary (www.pol-int.org)'This work is valuable as an overview and summary … and thanks to extensive use of documents from Polish archives this work throws extensive light on the process of 'verification' in Upper Silesia.' Matthias E. Cichon, translated from Zeitschrift für Ostmitteleuropa-Forschung'Service's thoughtful tome builds upon prior works by Michael Fleming and Gregor Thum that addressed questions of defining and creating Polish identities … Recommended. Upper-division undergraduates and above.' R. K. Byczkiewicz, Choice'Hugo Service's monograph is a significant step forward to a better understanding of the complicated migration and nationalization processes that were under way in Poland's northern and western territories between 1939 and 1949. … One of the most excellent features of the book is its rich archival base.' Jan Musekamp, Pol-Int'With his study Germans to Poles, Hugo Service provides a deep insight into and understanding of these complex processes and offers a step toward studying this area of postwar European history … Based on a rich variety of sources, Service's study is clearly written and well structured.' Cambridge University Press Imperial Rule and the Politics of Nationalism AntiColonial Protest In The French Empire Problems of International Politics
Book SynopsisDuring the first half of the twentieth century, movements seeking political equality emerged in France's overseas territories. Within twenty years, they were replaced by movements for national independence in the majority of French colonies, protectorates, and mandates. In this pathbreaking study of the decolonization era, Adria Lawrence asks why elites in French colonies shifted from demands for egalitarian and democratic reforms to calls for independent statehood, and why mass mobilization for independence emerged where and when it did. Lawrence shows that nationalist discourses became dominant as a consequence of the failure of the reform agenda. Where political rights were granted, colonial subjects opted for further integration and reform. Contrary to conventional accounts, nationalism was not the only or even the primary form of anti-colonialism. Lawrence shows further that mass nationalist protest occurred only when and where French authority was disrupted. Imperial crises were Trade Review"Political scientists interested in nationalism, imperialism, and contentious politics will find something in this book to inform their thinking. But Lawrence has something new to say to other audiences too. Historians who feel that political scientists enter the historical field only to fetch a few examples to prove their pet theories will find in Lawrence a political scientist who, when she delves into history, does so as a historian would and actively contributes to the historical understanding of nationalism in the Middle East." Nathan J. Brown, George Washington University"Adria Lawrence presents an important argument: the development of nationalism is not a natural, automatic response to subordination in an empire, but an interactive, contingent phenomenon. Her book is about actual politics – the give and take of claims and counterclaims, the opening and shutting of opportunities. She presents an analysis that students of nationalism, colonial situations, and political movements need to ponder." Frederick Cooper, New York University, author of Decolonization and African Society: The Labor Question in French and British Africa"Mainstream interpretations of how nationalist movements under French colonial rule emerged and mobilized for independence have long privileged the inherent link between colonialism and the impulse for national self-determination. In this innovative and deeply informed study, Lawrence highlights the contingent nature of the nationalist enterprise, in which the impulse for political equality and its subsequent denial by the colonial authorities serves to catalyze popular demand for independence framed in the language of nationalism. The author brings together an impressive array of original and secondary sources to substantiate her theoretical claims with particular focus on the Moroccan experience. Clearly written and devoid of jargon, Lawrence has produced a compelling reinterpretation of imperial rule and the politics of nationalism from which students and specialists alike will benefit." John P. Entelis, Fordham University"Some of the most rewarding books are those that expose a flaw in conventional wisdom. Adria Lawrence’s Imperial Rule and the Politics of Nationalism discredits the widely held view that nations naturally want to rule themselves. She shows that Moroccans might well have been satisfied by French rule had the French governed them more skillfully. This finding, which is based on impressive research, has huge policy implications concerning the world’s trouble spots." Timur Kuran, Duke UniversityTable of Contents1. Introduction: the politics of nationalism in the French empire; 2. Indigènes into Frenchmen? Seeking political equality in Morocco and Algeria; 3. Political equality and nationalist opposition in the French empire; 4. Empire disrupted: nationalist opposition accelerates; 5. Nationalist mobilization in colonial Morocco; 6. Conclusion.

Cambridge University Press Foreign Policy as Nation Making
Book SynopsisAfter the Second World War, Turkey and Egypt were among the most dynamic actors in the Middle East. Their 1950s foreign policies presented a puzzle, however: Turkey''s Democrat Party pursued NATO membership and sponsored the pro-Western Baghdad Pact regionally, while Egypt''s Free Officers promoted neutralism and pan-Arab alliances. This book asks why: what explains this divergence in a shared historical space? Rethinking foreign policy as an important site for the realisation of nationalist commitments, Abou-El-Fadl finds the answer in the contrasting nation making projects pursued by the two leaderships, each politicised differently through experiences of war, imperialism and underdevelopment. Drawing on untapped Turkish and Arabic sources, and critically engaging with theories of postcolonial nationalism, she emphasises local actors'' agency in striving to secure national belonging, sovereignty and progress in the international field. Her analysis sheds light on the contemporary legTrade Review'Reem Abou-El-Fadl's fine comparative study of Egyptian and Turkish foreign policy in the early Cold War throws penetrating new light on how foreign policy can serve national development strategies in LDCs [Least Developed Countries]. Using an innovative theoretical framework that links theories of IR [International Relations] and nationalism, it also breaks new theoretical ground that can be usefully applied to other cases.' Raymond Hinnebusch, University of St. Andrews'This historically grounded, empirically rich and thoroughly comparative analysis of the interplay between foreign policy-making and national self-fashioning in Egypt and Turkey during the 1950s offers a challenging new perspective that scholars of international relations and comparative politics would do well to engage with.' Zachary Lockman, New York University'In this empirically rich and theoretically sophisticated study, Reem Abou-El-Fadl shows that the diametrically opposed positions Egypt and Turkey assumed vis-à-vis the west in the 1950s derived directly from their respective projects of nation making. El-Fadl's book is an essential reading for anyone who wants to understand the link between domestic and international politics in Global South, both in the twentieth and in the twenty-first century.' HarperCollins Publishers Inc Still the Best Hope
Book SynopsisConservative radio host and syndicated columnist Dennis Prager provides a bold, sweeping look at the future of civilization with Still the Best Hope, and offers a strong, cogent argument for why basic American values must triumph in a dangerously uncertain world. Humanity stands at a crossroads, and the only alternatives to the “American Trinity” of liberty, natural rights, and the melting-pot ideal of national unity are Islamic totalitarianism, European democratic socialism, capitalist dictatorship, or global chaos if we should fail. America is Still the Best Hope, as this eminently sensible, profoundly inspiring volume so powerfully proves.

Book SynopsisIn this Very Short Introduction, Michael Stanislawski presents an impartial and disinterested history of Zionist ideology from its origins to the present. Sharp and accessible, he charts the crucial moments in the ideological development of Zionism, including the emergence of modern Jewish nationalism in early nineteenth century Europe, the founding of the Zionist movement by Theodor Herzl in 1897, right through to the rise of the âPeace Nowâ movement, and the election of conservative prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu. The University of Chicago Press When Peace Is Not Enough
Book SynopsisThe state of Israel is often spoken of as a haven for Jewish people, a place rooted in story of a nation dispersed, wandering earth in search of its homeland. Focusing on histories of Israel's marginalized stakeholders, the author demonstrates how these voices provide urgently needed resources for conflict analysis and peace building.Trade Review"When Peace Is Not Enough is an innovative work, one that ably bridges the fields of politics, religion, and peace studies. Atalia Omer's discussion of the 'hermeneutics of citizenship' in particular - and the need for reimaging both religion and the nation as a necessary prerequisite for peace building - is both genuinely interesting and enormously insightful." Knopf Doubleday Publishing Group The Politics of Fear
Book SynopsisFrom the author of Cults, Conspiracies, and Secret Societies, a probing exploration of the bizarre and dangerous conspiracies that have roiled America over the past decade and captured the minds of so many AmericansSome of the conspiracy theories now gripping American politics contend that Joe Biden was executed and replaced by a clone and that John F. Kennedy Jr., faked his death and will one day return to slay Trump’s enemies. But who is susceptible to them, and what makes them so politically potent?Investigating the historical roots of our peculiar brand of political paranoia, Arthur Goldwag helps us make sense of the senseless and, in so doing, uncovers three uncomfortable truths: that it is older than Trumpism and will outlast it; that theocratic authoritarianism is as hardwired in our American heritage as the principles of the Enlightenment; and that the fear that our system is “rigged” is not altogether unfounded. A probing, surprising, and critical examination of America’s paranoid style, The Politics of Fear sheds new light on the age-old question: What exactly are we so afraid of?

Book SynopsisThe collection draws on the work of scholars and creative producers from all over the world who explore the idea of the nation in a variety of postcolonial contexts.Trade Review "The value of Murray's collection is the specificity of the research areas it offers, in contrast to the generality and circularity that theory so often assumes. The book successfully contributes to our growing understanding of forms of nationalism and the nation outside of, and explicitly and implicitly challenging, earlier European models."
