Berghahn Books Empire and After: Englishness in Postcolonial

    Out of stock

Book Synopsis The growing debate over British national identity, and the place of "Englishness" within it, raises crucial questions about multiculturalism, postimperial culture and identity, and the past and future histories of globalization. However, discussions of Englishness have too often been limited by insular conceptions of national literature, culture, and history, which serve to erase or marginalize the colonial and postcolonial locations in which British national identity has been articulated. This volume breaks new ground by drawing together a range of disciplinary approaches in order to resituate the relationship between British national identity and Englishness within a global framework. Ranging from the literature and history of empire to analyses of contemporary culture, postcolonial writing, political rhetoric, and postimperial memory after 9/11, this collection demonstrates that far from being parochial or self-involved, the question of Englishness offers an important avenue for thinking about the politics of national identity in our postcolonial and globalized world.Trade Review "This is an intellectually rigorous collection of essays investigating the nature of "Englishness" both within and beyond national borders… [It] offers a useful and timely intervention into analyses of the continuing significance of empire in understanding English/British identity and culture… the relationship of history to present circumstances, and the co-option of the "past" for political objectives, is a key theme… while several of its essays are grounded in the field of literature and contemporary culture, historians should not be tempted to overlook this important collection." · English Historical Review "The coherence of the volume derives from – and it is, in some respects a remarkably coherent volume – an introduction that anticipates, indeed, proves the theoretical coordinates through which the individual essays form their analyses." · College Literature "This excellent collection of essays addresses with great range and significant insight urgent questions that have long haunted and are again animating the relation of Englishness to Britishness, of nationalism to imperialism, of local cultural grammars to global political forms. In collecting the essays for the volume and in their own contributions to and introduction of it, the editors have done a superb job of reminding readers why the many paradoxes of "Englishness" are vital not only to the long history of the formal British empire but to the moment of flexible imperialism we currently inhabit. This is a timely and striking addition to the field." · Ian Baucom, Duke University.Table of Contents Dedication Acknowledgements Introduction: Nationalism Beyond the Nation-State Graham MacPhee & Prem Poddar PART I: NATION AND EMPIRE Chapter 1. Book SynopsisWinner of the African Studies Association 2016 Bethwell A. Ogot Book Prize A lively account of the 1924 Revolution in Sudan and the way in which the colonial situation has affected its representation, a case in point inthe histories of nationalist anti-colonial movements in Africa and the Middle East. The 1924 Revolution was a watershed in Sudanese history, the first episode of anti-colonial resistance in which a nationalist ideology was explicitly used, and part of a global wave of anti-colonial movements after the First WorldWar that can be seen as the "spring of the colonial nations". This detailed account of the uprising, and its eventual failure, explores the cosmopolitan nationalism embraced by the White Flag League, the movement that sparked the revolution, and its ability to attract people from diverse origins, classes and professions. It examines the international genesis of the movement; the strategies put in place to spread it in different areas of Sudan and among different groups; the movement's inclusive ideology and its definition of the Sudanese nation, as well as the limitations to its inclusiveness; and the way in which this episode reveals deeper questions relating to origins, social hierarchies and power. The book also unravels the complex history of the memory of 1924, the politics of its representation and the underlying power struggles that saw 1924 largely lost from the historical record. ElenaVezzadini is a historian of modern Sudan affiliated to the Centre for Middle Eastern and Islamic Studies, University of Bergen, and Institut des Mondes Africains, Paris.Trade Review[A]s a well-documented case study utilizing major conceptual frameworks for analysis, Lost Nationalism is a useful contribution to understanding nationalism and revolution in the modern world. * CANADIAN JOURNAL OF AFRICAN STUDIES *The Arabic and English, textual and visual, primary and secondary sources on which Vezzadini was able to draw for this study, while extraordinarily rich and abundant, were also challenging and complex. 5 in stock

Book SynopsisPublished in English for the first time, this book defends the idea that nationhood remains a central aspect of modernity. After the breakup of the Soviet Union and Yugoslavia in the 1990s, the following decade confirmed this hypothesis with the rise of independence movements in Europe (in Scotland and Flanders) and the persistence of claims to nationhood the world over (for example, in Kurdistan and Tibet). A dual perspective informs Dieckhoff's analysis: to understand the hidden social and cultural underpinnings of post-Cold War identity dynamics, from Kosovo to Catalonia and from Flanders to Corsica, and to examine how societies can meet the challenge of national pluralism. Finding liberalism, republicanism and multiculturalism unequal to this task, he argues that only by building 'multi-nation' democratic states can the issues be properly addressed and secessions prevented. Contemporary liberal discourse often treats nationalism as an archaic aberration -- as a primitive form of tribalism astray in the modern world.Dieckhoff's sensitive and clear-headed analysis shows why nationalism is in fact a fundamental facet of modernity, which must be dealt with as such by states vulnerable to breakup.Trade Review'This book explains why nationalism has been so successful at taking root in liberal democratic contexts. It is one of the best books in the field of political science in the last decade.' * Alain G. Gagnon, Canada Research Chair, University of Quebec at Montreal *'An elegantly written and carefully balanced analysis of the continuous relevance of nationalism in contemporary politics, including in liberal societies. Dieckhoff discusses nationalism in its full complexity and multiplicity. His book is a welcome addition to a field which is so much dominated by Anglo-Saxon scholarship.' * Andre W.M. Gerrits, Professor of International Studies and Global Politics, Uniersity of Leiden *'The facts are clear: even with an increasing international division of labour and global communications, nations persist. Thus, whatever the reasons for this persistence, nationality can not be understood an atavistic remnant rather, it is a part of our time. The great merit of Dieckhoff's stimulating analysis is that it faces these facts, while realistically and with subtlety probing their consequences for politics, for example, the challenging possibility of a "trimmed down central state" of federated nations. A noteworthy contribution.' * Steven Grosby author of Nationalism: A Very Short Introduction *

Book SynopsisThe Division of Heaven and Earth is one of the most influential and important books from Tibet in the modern era - a passionate indictment of Chinese policies and an eloquent analysis of protests that swept Tibet from March 2008 as a re-awakening of Tibetan national consciousness and solidarity.Publication of the original Tibetan edition saw Shokdung (a pseudonym), one of Tibet's leading intellectuals, imprisoned for nearly six months, and the book immediately banned. This English translation is being made available for the first time since copies began to circulate underground in Tibet.Written in response to an unprecedented wave of bold demonstrations and expressions of Tibetan solidarity and national identity, Shokdung's book is regarded as one of the most daring and wide-ranging critiques of China's policies in Tibet since the 10th Panchen Lama's famous '70,000-character Petition' addressed to Mao Zedong in 1962.Trade Review'A remarkable book by one of Tibet's most important contemporary authors.' -- Richard Gere'Taygal's book, published illegally in Tibet in 2010, is a poetic, painstakingly written indictment of Chinese rule and a call for a "peaceful revolution" against what he describes as Beijing's heavy-handed governing style.' -- New York Times'[A] haunting indictment of China's colonial project in Tibet... This remarkable book, written to fortify the Tibetan spirit against the assaults of colonialism, has already performed an important service by exposing the fragility of China's hold on the Tibetan mind.' -- The Spectator'[The Division of Heaven and Earth] brings a different perspective on the tragic fate of the Land of Snows.' -- The Statesman

  • English Nationalism: A Short History

C Hurst & Co Publishers Ltd English Nationalism: A Short History

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisEnglishness is an idea, a consciousness and a proto-nationalism. There is no English state within the United Kingdom, no English passport, Parliament or currency, nor any immediate prospect of any. That does not mean that England lacks an identity, although English nationalism, or at least a distinctive nationalism, has been partly forced upon the English by the development in the British Isles of strident nationalisms that have contested Britishness, and with much success. So what is happening to the United Kingdom, and, within that, to England? Jeremy Black looks to the past in order to understand the historical identity of England, and what it means for English nationalism today, in a post-Brexit world. The extent to which English nationalism has a 'deep history' is a matter of controversy, although he seeks to demonstrate that it exists, from 'the Old English State' onwards, predating the Norman invasion He also questions whether the standard modern critique of politically partisan, or un-British, Englishness as 'extreme' is merited? Indeed, is hostility to 'England,' whatever that is supposed to mean, the principal driver of resurgent English nationalism? The Brexit referendum of 2016 appeared to have cancelled out Scottish and other nationalisms as an issue, but, in practice, it made Englishness a topic of particular interest and urgency, as set out in this short history of its origins and evolution.Trade Review'This pithy history argues that England’s tolerant brand of nationalism has been a force for good.''A balanced account of a subject mired in confusion and emotion . . . absorbing . . . Black succeeds in showing the deep roots of a sense of "Englishness"'. 'A concise historical survey.''Jeremy Black is an outstanding historian of ideas and one of the leading historians of these islands. This survey of English national feeling is penetrating, original, and incredibly well-informed. Its publication could not be more timely, or its subject matter more relevant, and there is no better guide to this issue than Professor Black.' -- Rt Hon Michael Gove MP'Jeremy Black’s book on English nationalism could not be more timely. He puts complex issues regarding British and English identity, patriotism, ethnicity and nationhood into their proper historical context, and makes them perfectly comprehensible. As we move towards a largely English-led Brexit, this well-written, well-informed and lively book will provide invaluable guidance.' -- Andrew Roberts, author of 'Churchill: Walking with Destiny''The distinction between Englishness and Britishness is one of the most crucial issues of our time. Jeremy Black’s lucid and intelligent analysis strides through Tudor exceptionalism and the rise and fall of British imperialism right through to the present day. It is an excellent guide to the sources of Britain's current distress.' -- Professor Norman Davies, author of 'Beneath Another Sky: A Global Journey into History'

Book SynopsisThis book argues that two conflicting styles of nationalist imagination led to the violent rending of Cyprus in 1974 and sustained that division over decades. Based on research in both southern and northern Cyprus, the work demonstrates how the conflict emerged through the Cypriot's encounters with modernity under British colonialism, and through a consequent re-imagining of the body politic in a new world in which Cypriots were defined as part of a European periphery. Rebecca Bryant demonstrates how Muslims and Christians were transformed into Turks and Greeks, and what it meant epistemologically, ontollogically and politically when they were.Trade Review'A timely and welcome contribution.' - Middle Eastern Studies

Book SynopsisConceptions of nationalism as a historical and contemporary phenomenon remain fragmentary in the late-1990s. This text analyzes the contraditions inherent in the general understanding of nationalism in order to fashion a new intellectual synthesis. In particular George Schopflin questions why states in the West are able to live with the nation as the legitimate space for democratic institutions, wheras in the post-communist world, especially in Eastern Europe, ethnicity is pre-eminent. He argues that the nation is simultaneously ethnic, civic and structured by the state. Schopflin applies his understanding of nationalism to various East and Central European case studies, including the former Yugoslavia and Hungary. He also compares the role of ethnicity in other states, including Britain.Trade Review'a cornucopia of informed and detailed insight on the politics of identity. [A...] Schopflin's writing is lively and vigorous, if abrasive. Ethnicity, identity, nationalism and nationhood are intriguing topics for study and certainly inform European politics today. C Hurst & Co Publishers Ltd Illusion of Freedom: Scotland Under Nationalism

    5 in stock

Book SynopsisAlex Salmond, a talented politician in charge of Scotland's devolved government since 2007, is mounting the biggest challenge to the British union state in its 300-year history. His fast-growing Scottish National Party wants Scotland to cease being the invisible country of Europe and to embrace independence. This book argues that if the Union is demolished, change will remain elusive and Scotland will continue to be run by the close-knit administrative, commercial and religious elites who have dominated the country for centuries. Tom Gallagher contends that the SNP remains fixated by resentment towards England and has no strategy for reviving a struggling economy and the deep-seated social problems which disfigure urban Scotland. He argues that the SNP are not committed to independence, that the SNP is a super-unionist party, that it recoils from popular sovereignty and is an enthusiastic backer of the EU's plans for a post-national Europe based on federalist rule from Brussels, and that it endorses a radical multi-culturalism that devalues individual citizenship and places Scotland at the mercy of globalization. Gallagher's hard-hitting analysis will stir emotions and generate debate, especially his claim that if the SNP triumphs it will reinforce the authoritarian trends which have disfigured Scottish history and contributed to heavy emigration. He passionately believes that moral and practical energies need to be released if Scotland is to renew itself, but fears that as long as the country is seen in romantic and propagandistic terms, this overdue transformation will be stillborn.

Book SynopsisThe Lebanese have always lacked a common vision of their past. From the beginning Muslims and Christians have disagreed fundamentally over their country's historical legitimacy: Christians on the whole have affirmed it, Muslims have tended to emphasize Lebanon's place in a broader Arab history. Both groups have used nationalist ideas in a destructive game, which at a deeper level involves archaic loyalties and tribal rivalries. But Lebanon cannot afford these conflicting visions if it is to develop and maintain a sense of political community. In the course of his lively exposition, Salibi offers a major reinterpretation of Lebanese history and provides insights into the dynamic of Lebanon's recent conflict. Book SynopsisIn these essays by historians on aspects of republicanism in Ireland (north and south) from the early 20th century to the present, a number of central themes emerge. During the course of the 20th century, republican organizations have been repeatedly faced by similar arguments, rhetoric and choices. Should they participate in political institutions which are seen to be illegitimate? Should physical force be used? Splits, schism and rivalry emerge as a significant dynamic of the political culture. Republican organizations are also shown to be ideologically incoherent, opportunist and flexible, and the struggle to claim political ownership of the republican tradition is shown to be very important. Another continuing theme is the progressive language of republicanism although in practice republican politics and activities are often intolerant.Trade Review"Most of the contributors avoid the easy parallels and the simple definitions and point up both the problems and potentially fruitful areas for further research and discussion." Should they participate in political institutions which are seen to be illegitimate? Should physical force be used? Splits, schism and rivalry emerge as a significant dynamic of the political culture. Republican organizations are also shown to be ideologically incoherent, opportunist and flexible, and the struggle to claim political ownership of the republican tradition is shown to be very important. Another continuing theme is the progressive language of republicanism although in practice republican politics and activities are often intolerant.Trade Review"Most of the contributors avoid the easy parallels and the simple definitions and point up both the problems and potentially fruitful areas for further research and discussion." Book SynopsisIsrael & the Post-Zionists - A Nation at RiskTrade Review"Offers a rightist critique of post-Zionism. All the contributions are interesting and insightful... as Yoav Gelber notes in his very perceptive contribution, the genuine danger lies in subtle and widespread 'post-Zionist' trends in society." -- Israel Affairs."Professor Sharan claims that the luxury of denigrating one's country and demanding that the current regime should be dismantled is possible in an established Western democracy. However, Israel is a country fighting for its existence, and this sort of movement can cause tremendous damage... The participants do not mince their words. Raya Epstein, for example, talks of the dangers of 'totalitarian democracy', where anybody who is not 'politically correct' has no right to express his / her opinions. Hillel Weiss describes 'post-Zionism' as a pathology. The book includes examples of Israeli anti-Semitic cartoons. Norman Dodge writes a useful essay on Western democracy's reactions to Arafat... The collection is unusual. It is avowedly politically incorrect. But it offers the student of Israeli affairs a different viewpoint from that of most Israeli publications." -- AJL Newsletter."The authors believe that the writings and activities of the post-Zionists have greatly weakened Israel at home and abroad. They aver that post-Zionist thinking and activity (particularly in the academy and the media) not only work an insidious influence on the ability of Israelis to persevere in the face of the terror war, but provide aid and comfort to anti-Semites of Arab and non-Arab backgrounds. These are not easy times, and the book's assertion of foreboding danger confirms this. Most of the time, however, the authors stay true to their scholarly backgrounds. They examine the behavior of post-Zionist thought from its origins in anti-Zionist politics of the late 19th century and early 20th centuries through the current days of the second Intifadah. They seek to find the movement's confreres in the Frankfurt School of neo-Marxism and to place it within the context of a world tendency toward political correctness and post-Nationalism. Mostly, they strive to demonstrate the disingenuousness and danger that the post-Zionists present to Israel and its survival in a hostile world." -- Jewish Book World."Chapters develop a serious and balanced critique of post-Zionist arguments for a multi-national, multi-religious and multicultural state." -- The Australian Jewish News.Table of ContentsContents: Introduction; Redefining the Israeli Ethos: Transforming Israeli Society; Zionism, the Post-Zionists and Myth; Israeli Intellectuals and Israeli Politics; The Frankfurt School and Post-Zionist Thought; The Leftist Media and the al-Aqsa Uprising; Post-Zionism and Democracy; The Future of the Ideological Civil War Within the West; The West and Yasser Arafat; Israeli Anti-Semitism; Post-Zionism and Anti-Zionism in Israeli Literature; The Messianic Theme in the Works of A. Book SynopsisThis little-known classic is a uniquely valuable insight into the fascinating and complex transitional period between the decline of nineteenth-century constitutional nationalism and the emergence of the modern Irish state, written by John J. Horgan, whose father had nominated Parnell for the Cork constituency in 1880. The author's account is based on his personal knowledge of the panoply of historical figures from "Parnell to Pearse", and on his own involvement as an activist and observer in the turbulent period that witnessed the extinction of the Irish Party. This title comes with an introduction by John J. Horgan's grandson, Professor John S. Horgan.Trade Review"University College Dublin Press has now published over thirty 'Classics of Irish History'. These contemporary accounts by well known personalities of historical events and attitudes have an immediacy that conventional histories do not have. Introductions by modern historians provide additional historical background and, with hindsight, objectivity. Books Ireland Nov 2007 "Scholars of nineteenth-century Irish and Irish-American politics should reacquaint themselves with these classics, part of a long running and immensely useful series from University College Dublin Press." Irish Literary Supplement Fall 2008 "this little-known account of the demise of the Irish Parliamentary Party first appeared in 1949 - [The author] himself was a party activist and the book's strength as a study of this crucial transitional period in Irish history is that Horgan writes as an insider who was not just an observer but a participant in some of the events he describes - The biological introduction by his grandson sheds light on an intelligent and principled man who in many ways was a maverick in the independent state and ahead of his times on many key issues." Books Ireland September 2009 'John Horgan had many heroes, flawed and flawless, and a few villains. Personal reminiscences about them make this history particularly engaging. As a child he knew Parnell. His father was Parnell's election agent and Parnell was his best man at his wedding. In 1891 - after the split - Parnell stayed with them for the last time, and was primarily concerned with interviewing 'a rich Cork merchant of liberal views, in order to induce him to buy the Ponsonby estate and reinstate the evicted tenants'. On news of Parnell's death, his father broke down; he had never seen him cry before. - Eoin MacNeill, Douglas Hyde and Pearse were close to Horgan, then Cork vice-president of the Gaelic League. - It also brought him into contact with Roger Casement. - Horgan adds 'So poor Casement's strange, romantic, tortured spirit reached its apotheosis as one of the heroes of the rising he had vainly tried to prevent.' But Horgan's greatest and in the end tragic hero is Parnell's successor and fellow-Clongownian John Redmond. - For Horgan, the rising was abortive and unjustified. - He concludes that its ascendancy in our consciousness and Redmond's eclipse 'made partition inevitable - and furnished the necessary excuse for the civil war. The writer's grandson, also John Horgan, has written a biographical introduction to this edition. Horgan junior, now the press ombudsman, has had a career trajectory which included progressive politician, biographer, journalist and academic; in short mirrored that of his grandfather.' Books Ireland December 2009 'reissued with illuminating new introductions as a part of the Classics of Irish History series published by UCD Press, one of the most admirable - endeavours in recent Irish publishing history. More than this, these texts were also all political interventions. Horgan's wider purpose was to bear witness to the integrity and largeness of vision of the men and women who made the Home Rule movement and the cultural richness and complexity of their world. Themes which reoccur throughout the book include the vitality of early twentieth-century Irish Catholic intellectual life and the central role played by Home Rulers in the language movement, industrial revivalism and other forms of political radicalism. While much of the appeal of Horgan's book stems from his evocative pen portraits, much of the purpose of his book is achieved through his extended biographical sketches, often presented as exemplary lives. By these means, Horgan sought to create an alternative nationalist pantheon to rival that inhabited by the men of 1916-21. Horgan's book is a fascinating idiosyncratic text. Unorthodox and iconoclastic, it paints a compelling picture of a pre-1918 Ireland in which political alignments and identities were more fluid than historical accounts of the period sometimes allow. But more than this, Parnell to Pearse must also be read as a commentary on Ireland's neutrality during World War II, the fledging state's greatest crisis since its formation - ' Irish Literary Supplement Fall 2010 'It is written in part to elucidate and explain Ireland to English readers. - It reflects also the trajectory of the Gladstonian Liberal-Nationalist union of hearts and the effort that involved in the education of the sympathetic English in the affairs of Ireland, and is the last Irish political publication to derive from that trajectory. It is also addressed to Irish posterity, particularly perhaps his own. The republication of Parnell to Pearse by University College Dublin Press is supplemented by a valuable and impressively researched biographical introduction by John Horgan, grandson and namesake of the author, which carries the story forward through the final half-century of the grandfather's life.' Book Synopsis"Words of a Dead Chief" is an important text from a critical period in Irish nationalist politics. Published in 1892, shortly after Charles Stewart Parnell's death, it is a collection of extracts from his speeches, including all of the best-known ones. There is an unmistakeable political even propagandist dimension to the publication. It was written for a nationalist audience and particularly for followers of Parnell. Wyse-Power explains in her preface that the purpose of her 'humble memento' was to keep the principles which Parnell enunciated before the minds of Irish Nationalists 'for whom there should be a rule of political faith and conduct'. She aimed to select such passages as were most characteristic of Parnell, of most vital importance for nationalists to study, remember and take for guidance. This edition includes the original introduction by C. S. Parnell's sister Anna. The book was an immediate bestseller. It was easily accessible to a general audience and proved highly influential, but it went quickly out of print.Trade Review"University College Dublin Press has now published over thirty 'Classics of Irish History'. Book SynopsisNation-Nazione brings together scholars of Ireland and Italy to examine the multiple intersections, impacts, and influences that flowed between Italy and Ireland, and Italian and Irish nationalists, in the nineteenth century. By locating both Irish and Italian history in their wider European and comparative contexts, the book contributes to a fuller understanding of the national movements of both places, and the often surprising and unexpected intersections from electoral politics to culture to military force, as well as the abiding impact of Italian events, myths, and personalities in Ireland, and Irish in Italy. For Irish historians, it questions the image of Irish isolation or exceptionalism, just as it reminds Italians that the most distant corners of Europe impacted on their own national history. The first book to comprehensively address this topic, Nation/Nazione will open entirely new fields of research for scholars.Trade Review'Nation/Nazione, which places nineteenth-century Ireland firmly within the wider European context, is ... a very welcome and important addition to the existing historiography. Its focus on the "interactions and intersections" between Irish and Italian nationalism means the volume also stands as a significant contribution to the growing transnational literature on the Italian Risorgimento ... This is a book with much to recommend it.' April 2015, Modern Italy 'This book will interest everyone concerned not only with the creation of modern Italy, but to the interactions over the course of the 19th Century of the emerging states of the European Community with interactions and interrelations that were both conflicting and fruitful.' January 2014 Irish Catholic 'Nation/Nazione provides an exhaustive overview of Irish nationalism's interactions with, and parallels to, the Italian Risorgimento - Nation/Nazione's many strong points also go a long way to providing a firm foundation for future work.' September 2014 Aidan Beatty (University of Chicago), Irish History Online. 'What is a nation and how is it formed? These are some of the key questions raised by this book, which is concerned primarily with two national movements that took place at around the same time, one in Italy, the other in Ireland. The various ways in which these two different campaigns influenced one another during their respective struggles also comes under the spotlight. At its core is the message that nationalism meant a different thing in each country, or rather that the route to achieve it was different.' These include the changing roles of men in Scottish society, the role of work and employment. What it means to be a man is very different from forty years ago: in terms of expectations, relationships, how men relate to partners, bring up children and what constitutes a modern family. However, there is a dark side of Scottish masculinity – seen in the drinking, violent, abusive behaviour of some Scots men, and this book addresses this directly, getting into issues many of us often shy away from confronting.Draws on the wide-ranging voices of: journalist, writer and broadcaster, David Torrance; founder of a youth employment and mentoring charity, Sandy Campbell; public health researcher, Pete Seaman; and former policeman and head of the violence reduction unit, John Carnochan.

Book SynopsisUsing Christian communities in the former Yugoslavia as a case study, Branko Sekulić introduces the concept of ethnoreligiosity to the theological discussion in order to resolve the confusion that occurs when scholars talk about the concepts of ethno-religion or ethnoreligion. Ethno-religion/ethnoreligion came to describe the phenomenon of ethnic religion as a certain cultural specificity and which by itself has no negative connotation, but due to the lack of a better expression , it has been used as a term for the phenomenon of ethnic and religious conflict and discrimination. In that sense, ethnoreligiosity can be defined as a phenomenon resulting from the usurpation of the religious aspect of human life by the ethnic one, or more precisely, it emerges as a consequence of an ethnic (ethnonational) ideological overtaking of the structures of the religious organization. It takes place through the attempt to give sacral connotation to a particular ethnonational myth as an integral part of ethnonational ideology, with the result that religious feeling is no longer generated on a religious but primarily on an ethnonational base. By understanding the proper definition and manifestation of ethnoreligiosity, one will have the opportunity to discern the basic components of this phenomenon not only within the countries of the former Yugoslavia, but in other countries as well.Trade ReviewThe analysis is nuanced and fact-based by a very erudite and well-informed scholar. I know of no other person who does it so competently. Sekulić consults and incorporates most of the relevant literature in several languages. In addition, he has done something that is very hard in the Balkan context, and that is not to favor one or the other side in the conflict but deal with the material evenhandedly and judiciously. This is what is usually lacking in most of the books dealing with the Balkan conflicts. From my perspective this is one of the most important qualities: a book by a critical thinker who goes deeply—very deeply—into the subject matter without being prejudiced or overtly biased. -- Paul Mojzes, Rosemont College, emeritusTable of ContentsIntroductionChapter 1. Book SynopsisFrom Donald Trump in the U.S. to Jair Bolsonaro in Brazil, Viktor Orbán in Hungary, and Narendra Modi in India, right-wing populist leaders have taken power in many parts of the world. While each country’s populist movement is distinct, they are united by several key features, including the presence of a boastful strongman leader and the scapegoating of vulnerable populations, especially immigrants, people of color, LGBTQ people, and women. The Perils of Populism shows how a feminist lens can help diagnose the factors behind the global rise of right-wing populism and teach us how to resist the threat it presents to democracy. Featuring interdisciplinary essays about politics in the United States, the Middle East, Europe, and India from a variety of acclaimed theorists and activists, the volume contributes to a rapidly expanding literature on gender and the far right. Together, these chapters offer a truly intersectional analysis of the problem, addressing everything from how populism has thrived in a “post-truth” era to the ways it appeals to working-class voters looking for an alternative to neoliberalism. Yet the authors also find reasons to be hopeful, as they showcase forms of grassroots feminist activism that challenge right-wing populism by advocating for racial and economic justice.Trade Review"This timely book makes a unique contribution to studies of right wing authoritarianism by applying a feminist and gender analysis to populism. Book SynopsisReligion and nationalism are two of the most powerful forces in the world. And as powerful as they are separately, humans throughout history have fused religious beliefs and nationalist politics to develop religious nationalism, which uses religious identity to define membership in the national community. But why and how have modern nationalists built religious identity as the foundational signifier of national identity in what sociologists have predicted would be a more secular world? This book takes two cases - nationalism in both Ireland and Turkey in the 20th century - as a foundation to advance a new theory of religious nationalism. Book SynopsisBolsonarismo: The Global Origins and Future of Brazil’s Far Right documents the rise of the far-right alliance that emerged in Brazil in 2020 around the figure of former president Jair Bolsonaro. Unlike a cohesive organization with uniform practices, Bolsonarismo is marked by fragmentation and a broad variety of ideologies. Fernando Brancoli delves deeply into how Bolsonarismo has developed a specific political orientation through its partnerships with other groups, practices, and subjectivities within Brazil, as well as internationally. Through interviews, archival research, and newly available public documents, this book presents a comprehensive and compelling portrait of the neo-evangelical pastors, military personnel, and meritocratic ideologues who are the actors behind the far-right movement. Adding to our understanding of Bolsonarismo's growth in Brazilian politics and the contributing factors behind it, the book also sheds light on the impact of Bolsonarismo on world politics. As a prominent leader of the far-right movement, Jair Bolsonaro's political views and policies have reverberated beyond Brazil's borders, influencing the discourse on issues such as climate change, democracy, and human rights around the world.Trade Review"Brancoli’s thrillingly-original and uniquely-probing analysis will captivate students, scholars, journalists, and activists concerned by the rise of the far right in Latin America. Brancoli provides clarity for a world spellbound by the hypocrisy, sadism, mismanagement, and ecocidal racism of the Bolsonaro administration. • Être nationaliste en régime de dictature

PIE - Peter Lang Être nationaliste en régime de dictature

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisAlmost sixty years after the signature of the Treaty of Rome in 1957 creating the European Community), a Member-State, the United Kingdom, has for the first time in history decided to leave the European Union. The yes to leave vote during the British referendum on 26 June 2016 led to the use of Article 50 of the EU Treaty triggering off a long period of negotiations between the UK and the EU, which was overshadowed by a permanent struggle between the options of a deal or a no-deal. The Withdrawal Agreement was finally signed on 24 January 2020 and Brexit actually took place on 31 January 2020 more than three and a half years after the referendum. It is not surprising that a lot of analyses have been put forward to explain the British electoral result, mainly from the perspective of political sociology. However, there has been less research so far on the deeper roots of Brexit as a historical and political process and its development from the start of the referendum campaign until the end of the negotiations between the UK and the EU, nor on its possible social, economic, legal and (geo)political consequences. In order to examine the origins and consequences of Brexit, this publication develops two original perspectives. On the one hand, it has taken a pluridisciplinary approach comparing the point of views of sociologists, political scientists, legal experts and historians. On the other hand, it has adopted a global approach by comparing the analyses of Japanese, Canadian, American and European researchers. These Global Views on Brexit regroup the contributions to an international Conference on The Consequences of Brexit organised on 6-7 December 2018 in Strasbourg, in the framework of the Jean Monnet project on Crises in European Border Regions supported by the Erasmus+ Programme of the European Union (EU) for the period from 2018-2020.

Book SynopsisThe period from the 1870s to the 1920s was marked by an interplay between nationalisms and internationalisms, culminating in the First World War, on the one hand, and the creation of the League of Nations, on the other. The arts were central to this debate, contributing both to the creation of national traditions and to the emergence of ideas, objects and networks that forged connections between nations or that enabled internationalists to imagine a different world order altogether. The essays presented here explore the ways in which the arts operated internationally during this crucial period of nation-making, and how they helped to challenge national conceptions of citizenship, society, homeland and native tongue. The collection arises from the AHRC-funded research network Internationalism and Cultural Exchange, 1870–1920 (ICE; 2009–2014) and its enquiry into the histories of cultural internationalism and their historiographical implications. This collection has been edited by members of the ICE network convened by Grace Brockington and Sarah Victoria Turner.Trade Review«Imagined Cosmopolis is an ambitious and exciting volume that charts new interdisciplinary territory through the interrogation of international ideals and cosmopolitan experiences in the nineteenth and early twentieth century. It provides a welcome corrective to the national and ideological borders that often structure scholarship, and I know it will inspire future work in the field.» (Professor Morna O’Neill, Wake Forest University) «The study of modern history has for so long focused on the nation as the key framework, but recent studies, of which this volume contains excellent examples, have de-nationalized history by globalizing separate national entities. This is a most welcome development, and it is to be hoped that this volume will be followed by many others in transnationalizing modern history.» (Professor Akira Iriye, Harvard University)Table of ContentsCONTENTS: Grace Brockington/Sarah Victoria Turner: Introduction: Art and Culture Beyond the Nation – Daniel Laqua: Introduction: Cosmopolitanism and the Individual – Jessica Wardhaugh: The Fabulous Destiny of Saint-Patrice: Royalist Cosmopolitanism and Republican France – Sharon Hecker: Navigating International Networks for Modern Sculpture at the Fin de Siècle: The Case of Medardo Rosso – Dina Gusejnova: A Prussian Diplomat and Cosmopolitan: Count Harry Kessler’s Cultural Politics during and after the First World War – Marina Dmitrieva: ‘Distance Passes through Me’: Herwarth Walden, Modernism and the Cosmopolitan Utopia – Charlotte Ashby: Introduction: Cultural Networks and Connections – Christopher Reed: Boston as Museum: Cosmopolitan Constructions of Japan – Vibeke Röstorp: Third Culture Artists: Scandinavians in Paris – Juliet Simpson: Art as Cosmopoetics: Ferdinand Hodler, Mallarmé and La Revue de Geneve – Rosie Ibbotson: Synoptic Outlooks: Cosmopolitan Vision and the Arts and Crafts Movement – Sarah Victoria Turner: Introduction: Real Places and Imagined Journeys – Hervé Inglebert and Sandra Kemp: Universal Histories, Universal Exhibitions and Universal Museums in Europe: Henry Cole and the Legacies of the South Kensington Museum – Marta Filipová: Regional Modernity and the Global Exhibition Network: Prague’s Exhibitions of 1891 and 1895 – Wouter Van Acker: World Capital Cities in the Belle Époque: Claiming Centrality through Cosmopolitanism – Charlotte Ashby: European Design Journals as Transnational Spaces – Grace Brockington: Introduction: The Expanded Universal Language Movement – Leonard Bell: Translations: Maori Art Nationalized in Settler-Colonial New Zealand and Internationalized in European Art and Theory – Helena Čapková: The Hawk Princess at the Hawk’s Well: Neo-Noh and the Idea of a Universal Japan – Katja Krebs: ‘So Utterly Foreign to the Spirit of Modern English Drama’: Internationalism and Theatrical Relations in London in the Early Twentieth Century – Sophie Hatchwell: ‘Acquiring a Foreign Accent’: Painting as Cosmopolitan Language in Edwardian Art Writing

Book SynopsisDemocratization is a process of collective emancipation through self-government. Continuous political contestation is essential for emancipation but, in order to know which strategies and conditions will emancipate us, we also need to know which ones subjugate us. Political mechanisms with the capacity to modulate our individual and collective bodies and make them docile tend to be close relatives of those which make us equal and free. Drawing on the latest theories concerning globalization and democracy, this book argues that postnational and postsovereign multilevel governance regimes, including the European Union, should be understood as mechanisms of global capitalism aimed at privatizing democracy. Through a detailed applied analysis of the Basque case, the author illustrates how democratization is closely linked to ideas about territory, collective empowerment and institutional political capacity. Democratization always takes place partially: it never «ends». Contrary to the dominant thinking, this book argues that the incomplete nature of democratization is a positive aspect, with perpetual conflict leading to perpetual change. This is precisely what allows, and obliges, each generation to shape its own forms of emancipation.Table of ContentsCONTENTS: Introduction: Privatizing democracy – Global capitalism, democracy and the European Union – Democratization – Territory, political economy and the nation-state – Basque territories: Federation, nation and self-determination – Basque democratization.
