Liverpool University Press Israel and the Post-Zionists: A Nation at Risk
Book SynopsisIsrael & the Post-Zionists - A Nation at RiskTrade Review"Offers a rightist critique of post-Zionism. All the contributions are interesting and insightful... as Yoav Gelber notes in his very perceptive contribution, the genuine danger lies in subtle and widespread 'post-Zionist' trends in society." -- Israel Affairs."Professor Sharan claims that the luxury of denigrating one's country and demanding that the current regime should be dismantled is possible in an established Western democracy. However, Israel is a country fighting for its existence, and this sort of movement can cause tremendous damage... The participants do not mince their words. Raya Epstein, for example, talks of the dangers of 'totalitarian democracy', where anybody who is not 'politically correct' has no right to express his / her opinions. Hillel Weiss describes 'post-Zionism' as a pathology. The book includes examples of Israeli anti-Semitic cartoons. Norman Dodge writes a useful essay on Western democracy's reactions to Arafat... The collection is unusual. It is avowedly politically incorrect. But it offers the student of Israeli affairs a different viewpoint from that of most Israeli publications." -- AJL Newsletter."The authors believe that the writings and activities of the post-Zionists have greatly weakened Israel at home and abroad. They aver that post-Zionist thinking and activity (particularly in the academy and the media) not only work an insidious influence on the ability of Israelis to persevere in the face of the terror war, but provide aid and comfort to anti-Semites of Arab and non-Arab backgrounds. These are not easy times, and the book's assertion of foreboding danger confirms this. Most of the time, however, the authors stay true to their scholarly backgrounds. They examine the behavior of post-Zionist thought from its origins in anti-Zionist politics of the late 19th century and early 20th centuries through the current days of the second Intifadah. They seek to find the movement's confreres in the Frankfurt School of neo-Marxism and to place it within the context of a world tendency toward political correctness and post-Nationalism. Mostly, they strive to demonstrate the disingenuousness and danger that the post-Zionists present to Israel and its survival in a hostile world." -- Jewish Book World."Chapters develop a serious and balanced critique of post-Zionist arguments for a multi-national, multi-religious and multicultural state." -- The Australian Jewish News.Table of ContentsContents: Introduction; Redefining the Israeli Ethos: Transforming Israeli Society; Zionism, the Post-Zionists and Myth; Israeli Intellectuals and Israeli Politics; The Frankfurt School and Post-Zionist Thought; The Leftist Media and the al-Aqsa Uprising; Post-Zionism and Democracy; The Future of the Ideological Civil War Within the West; The West and Yasser Arafat; Israeli Anti-Semitism; Post-Zionism and Anti-Zionism in Israeli Literature; The Messianic Theme in the Works of A. Book SynopsisThis book considers various aspects of the Referendum, with a particular focus on Scottish cultural institutions, such as the National Theatre and the National Portrait Gallery. Following the success of A Nation Again, Scott discusses the idea of Independence once again but this time, in light of more recent political developments with the forthcoming Referendum little over a year away.

Luath Press Ltd On Being A Man: Four Scottish Men in Conversation
Book SynopsisWhat does ‘masculinity’ mean today? On Being a Man brings together four men to consider the condition of Scottish men, reflect on their own backgrounds and experiences, and confront some of the most difficult issues men face. These include the changing roles of men in Scottish society, the role of work and employment. What it means to be a man is very different from forty years ago: in terms of expectations, relationships, how men relate to partners, bring up children and what constitutes a modern family. However, there is a dark side of Scottish masculinity – seen in the drinking, violent, abusive behaviour of some Scots men, and this book addresses this directly, getting into issues many of us often shy away from confronting.Draws on the wide-ranging voices of: journalist, writer and broadcaster, David Torrance; founder of a youth employment and mentoring charity, Sandy Campbell; public health researcher, Pete Seaman; and former policeman and head of the violence reduction unit, John Carnochan.

Rutgers University Press The Perils of Populism
Book SynopsisFrom Donald Trump in the U.S. to Jair Bolsonaro in Brazil, Viktor Orbán in Hungary, and Narendra Modi in India, right-wing populist leaders have taken power in many parts of the world. While each country’s populist movement is distinct, they are united by several key features, including the presence of a boastful strongman leader and the scapegoating of vulnerable populations, especially immigrants, people of color, LGBTQ people, and women. The Perils of Populism shows how a feminist lens can help diagnose the factors behind the global rise of right-wing populism and teach us how to resist the threat it presents to democracy. Featuring interdisciplinary essays about politics in the United States, the Middle East, Europe, and India from a variety of acclaimed theorists and activists, the volume contributes to a rapidly expanding literature on gender and the far right. Together, these chapters offer a truly intersectional analysis of the problem, addressing everything from how populism has thrived in a “post-truth” era to the ways it appeals to working-class voters looking for an alternative to neoliberalism. Yet the authors also find reasons to be hopeful, as they showcase forms of grassroots feminist activism that challenge right-wing populism by advocating for racial and economic justice.Trade Review"This timely book makes a unique contribution to studies of right wing authoritarianism by applying a feminist and gender analysis to populism. The authors of these essays clarify how populism works and why it succeeds, using language that is both accessible and engaging. This is essential reading for all concerned about democracy’s survival in these perilous times." -- Urvashi Vaid * Co-Director of the 22nd Century Initiative, a project to defeat the right culturally and politically *"The Perils of Populism brings together various academic and activist positions to shed light on the global outreach of current populist movements and their gendered logics. Building on prior research on right-wing populism and gender, the contributions pursue a feminist perspective on right-wing populism(s), which also emphasizes the core role of neoliberal capitalism for its current blossoming, and considers feminist practices of resistance. Rutgers University Press Borders of Belief: Religious Nationalism and the
Book SynopsisReligion and nationalism are two of the most powerful forces in the world. And as powerful as they are separately, humans throughout history have fused religious beliefs and nationalist politics to develop religious nationalism, which uses religious identity to define membership in the national community. But why and how have modern nationalists built religious identity as the foundational signifier of national identity in what sociologists have predicted would be a more secular world? This book takes two cases - nationalism in both Ireland and Turkey in the 20th century - as a foundation to advance a new theory of religious nationalism. By comparing cases, Goalwin emphasizes how modern political actors deploy religious identity as a boundary that differentiates national groups This theory argues that religious nationalism is not a knee-jerk reaction to secular modernization, but a powerful movement developed as a tool that forges new and independent national identities.Trade Review"In an age where religious nationalisms and populisms are on the rise, Goalwin's comparative-historical work is a welcome contribution for comprehending how religious identities and politics interact. Rutgers University Press Bolsonarismo: The Global Origins and Future of
Book SynopsisBolsonarismo: The Global Origins and Future of Brazil’s Far Right documents the rise of the far-right alliance that emerged in Brazil in 2020 around the figure of former president Jair Bolsonaro. Unlike a cohesive organization with uniform practices, Bolsonarismo is marked by fragmentation and a broad variety of ideologies. Fernando Brancoli delves deeply into how Bolsonarismo has developed a specific political orientation through its partnerships with other groups, practices, and subjectivities within Brazil, as well as internationally. Through interviews, archival research, and newly available public documents, this book presents a comprehensive and compelling portrait of the neo-evangelical pastors, military personnel, and meritocratic ideologues who are the actors behind the far-right movement. Adding to our understanding of Bolsonarismo's growth in Brazilian politics and the contributing factors behind it, the book also sheds light on the impact of Bolsonarismo on world politics. As a prominent leader of the far-right movement, Jair Bolsonaro's political views and policies have reverberated beyond Brazil's borders, influencing the discourse on issues such as climate change, democracy, and human rights around the world.Trade Review"Brancoli’s thrillingly-original and uniquely-probing analysis will captivate students, scholars, journalists, and activists concerned by the rise of the far right in Latin America. Brancoli provides clarity for a world spellbound by the hypocrisy, sadism, mismanagement, and ecocidal racism of the Bolsonaro administration. Offering a set of global perspectives grounded in local histories and contexts, this book sets Brazil into a dynamic transnational frame, and brings Eurocentric and U.S.-based scholarship on the new right into conversation with Latin American political sociology and interdisciplinary political studies." -- Paul Amar * author of The Security Archipelago: Human-Security States, Sexuality Politics, and the End of Neolib *"Brancoli retraces how, in the first decades of the 21st century, Brazil became an ultra-right global hub. It examines how bolsonarismo, albeit not cohesive, constitutes a political constellation that will not vanish with the electoral defeat of its leader. Above all, it charters how the same far-right that repudiates 'globalism' is itself viscerally transnational." -- Sonia Corrêa * co-editor of The Remaking of Social Contracts: Feminists in a Fierce New World *"For anyone willing to understand the rise of authoritarian nationalist leaders and far right ideologies across the world, Bolsonarismo is an enlightening descent into the improbable alliance of moral reaction, religious inspiration, neoliberal policies, populist strategies, and blatant racism. While deeply grounded in the Brazilian context, it also offers a broader reflection on lurking fascist trends in contemporary societies." -- Didier Fassin * professor at the Collège de France and the Institute for Advanced Study *Table of ContentsIntroduction 1 Extreme Right, Bolsonarismo, and the Multiple Bodies of Conservatism in Brazil 2 Bolsonarismo and the Battle against Globalism: Neoconservatism as a Transnational Alliance 3 Moral Geopolitics: Neo-Pentecostalism, Christian Zionism, and the Internationalization of Salvation 4 Domestic and International Pacification: Militarism, Peacekeeping Operations, and Enemy Formation in Brazil 5 Authoritarian Meritocracy: Bolsonarismo, the Establishment of an Entrepreneurial Nation, and the Privatization of the Family Conclusion: Bolsonarismo after Bolsonaro––From New Institutional Leaders to Evangelical Paramilitary Groups Acknowledgments Notes References Index

De Gruyter The Rise and Fall of Greater Syria: A Political
Book SynopsisThe Syrian Social Nationalist Party devoted itself to reviving and unifying the Syrian nation and establishing this nation’s complete independence over its historical homeland, Greater Syria. It continues its struggle today, influencing and shaping Lebanese and Syrian society and politics. Yet, the party remains largely unknown and misunderstood, a condition that stems from the lack of any comprehensive study of it. This book fills this gap. Syrian nationalism and nationalist movements, generally speaking, have been largely neglected and ignored by historians, scholars, and observers of the Middle East. So, too, has the SSNP. The lack of detailed and nuanced analyses has left significant gaps in the party’s rich history unaddressed and enabled the perpetuation of inaccuracies and misperceptions regarding its past. Given this and the party’s ongoing relevance in Lebanon and Syria, a thorough examination of the early history of the SSNP, the political organization and movement that embodied Syrian nationalism’s most explicit, most cogent expression is even more necessary. Based on an extensive and thorough examination of Arabic, French, and English primary sources, the monograph is the first comprehensive, systematic history of the SSNP to date, detailing its struggle to fulfill its nationalist vision and establish a secular, independent state in Greater Syria through a thorough analysis of its formation, evolution, and political activities in Lebanon and Syria. Table of ContentsThe book is divided into four parts, each with three chapters. The Introduction provides a general historical overview of the development of Syrian nationalism and the idea of Greater Syria, contextualizing the formation of Saʿadeh’s political thought and the establishment of the SSNP within this discourse. It also addresses the popular discourse on the SSNP in Lebanon and Syria during the period studied and, briefly, the book’s sources, methodology, and structure. Part One, A New Generation (Chapters 1-3), examines Saʿadeh’s first attempts at political organization and activism in the South American mahjar until his return to Lebanon in 1930, the party’s pre-history. It then analyzes the first six years of the SSNP’s existence, from its inception as a clandestine movement in 1932 through its discovery by French authorities in 1935 and its open political activities until Saʿadeh’s exile in 1938. Significantly, it details the party’s growth, shedding light on its recruitment methods, ideological and organizational development, and its geographic expansion in the urban and rural centers of Lebanon and Syria. Part Two, The War Years (Chapters 4-6), details the party’s activity in the mahjar and Syria and Lebanon from the beginning of Saʿadeh’s de facto exile in 1938 until the end of World War II. The first five years of this period were characterized by an intense confrontation with the French that would take a heavy toll on the party. The beleaguered party would find respite in an alliance forged with leading Lebanese politicians in 1943, but it came at a price: shunning the party’s ideological commitment to Greater Syria. The decision of the party leadership to shun Syrian nationalism would bring it into conflict with Saʿadeh and others who viewed it as a deviation that needed to be corrected and put to an end. Part Three, The Road to a Failed Revolution and Its Aftermath (Chapters 7-9), analyzes the tumultuous period in the party’s history that preceded and then intensified Saʿadeh’s return to Lebanon in March 1947. This period was characterized by internal party strife and renewed confrontation with Lebanese authorities as the party under Saʿadeh reasserted its Syrian nationalist creed, which directly challenged the idea of Lebanese independence. The confrontation reached its apogee in the SSNP’s failed “social nationalist revolution” and Saʿadeh’s subsequent execution in the summer of 1949, after which the party was outlawed in Lebanon and forced to move the center of its activities to Damascus and bide its time in Lebanon. Part Four, Advance and Retreat (Chapters 10-12), examines the ways in which the SSNP acted to shape the emerging regional and domestic orders in accordance with its ideological vision in the 1950s. Its good relations with Chamoun and his government in Lebanon and Shishakli and his regime in Syria enabled the party to develop its strength and expand its influence in both countries. However, a lack of broad popular appeal and poor decision making would lead the SSNP into open conflict with its increasingly powerful rivals the Baʿth and the communists, who succeeded in defeating the party and forcing it to retreat from the Syrian public sphere. In Lebanon, the party would fight to preserve Lebanon’s independence against Communist and Arab nationalist designs but would reap little reward for its efforts following the events of 1958. The Epilogue, The Rise of Factionalism, examines the party’s journey to its present, fractured state, demonstrating how the seeds of factionalism planted in the party’s early years bore their bitter fruit over time. It addresses the party’s activities during the Lebanese Civil War and the Syrian Civil War, its alliance with Hezbollah, and the party’s major splits and their sources. Finally, it provides an assessment of why the SSNP has failed to transform into a mass political movement and obtain significant, lasting political power, and will likely never do so.

De Gruyter Nationalism and Populism: Expressions of Fear or
Book SynopsisNationalism was declared dead too early. At the end of the Cold War, the postnational age was announced and liberalism claimed to have been victorious. Simultaneously, a postnational order was proclaimed. Transnational alliances like the European Union were thought to become much more important in international relations. Instead, we witnessed the rise of various forms of strong nationalisms all over the globe during the early twenty-first century and right-wing parties gaining more and more votes in elections often characterized by heavily nationalist agendas. This volume shows how nationalist dreams and fears determine politics in an age that was supposed to witness a rather peaceful coexistence amongst nations by those who consider transnational ideas more valuable than national demands. The case studies in the book offer explanations of how and why nationalism made its way back to the common consciousness and which elements stimulated the re-establishment of the aggressive nation-state. Continuities of empire, actual or imagined, as well as the role of “foreign-” and “otherness” for nationalist narratives, are key in order to explain how, among other factors, globalization stimulated the rise of twenty-first century nationalisms.

Vandenhoeck & Ruprecht GmbH & Co KG Christianity and National Identity in
Book SynopsisThis collection explores how Christian individuals and institutions whether Churches, church-related organisations, clergy, or lay thinkers combined the topics of faith and national identity in twentieth-century Europe. National identity is understood in a broad sense that includes discourses of citizenship, narratives of cultural or linguistic belonging, or attributions of distinct, national characteristics. The collection addresses Catholic, Protestant, and Orthodox perspectives, considers various geographical contexts, and takes into account processes of cross-national exchange and transfer. It shows how national and denominational identities were often mutually constitutive, at times leading to a strongly exclusionary stance against other national or religious groups. In different circumstances, religiously minded thinkers critiqued nationalism, emphasising the universalist strains of their faith, with varying degrees of success. Moreover, throughout the century, and especially since 1945, both church officials and lay Christians have had to come to terms with the relationship between their national and European identities and have sought to position themselves within the processes of Europeanisation. Various contexts for the negotiation of faith and nation are addressed: media debates, domestic and international political arenas, inner-denominational and ecumenical movements, church organisations, cosmopolitan intellectual networks and the ideas of individual thinkers.

Book SynopsisThe Habsburg Monarchy, with the diversity of its peoples, languages and historical regions, was a fascinating "Europe in miniature". Federalism became a hotly contested central theme in the 19th century. The federal laboratory ranged from Metternich's "federal state" to the personal autonomy of the Austromarxists and drafts of a constitution under Franz Ferdinand and Emperor Karl's nationality state from 1918. In addition to federal reform drafts, the book describes the Habsburg Empire as a living federation. This included a common foreign and security policy, the dualistic competition between Austria and Hungary and the increasing independence and cooperation of the Austrian crown lands, especially in modern policy areas such as education, health, welfare and infrastructure. This federal history in the European 19th century leads far beyond the history of the Habsburg Empire to the present day in Europe.

ibidem-Verlag, Jessica Haunschild u Christian Schon Russian Nationalism, Foreign Policy and Identity
Book SynopsisThe contributors to this book discuss the new conjunctions that have emerged between foreign policy events and politicised expressions of Russian nationalism since 2005. The 2008 war with Georgia, as well as conflicts with Ukraine and other East European countries over the memory of the Soviet Union, and the Russian interpretation of the 2005 French riots have all contributed to reinforcing narratives of Russia as a fortress surrounded by aggressive forces, in the West and CIS. This narrative has found support not only in state structures, but also within the larger public. It has been especially salient for some nationalist youth movements, including both, pro- Kremlin organisations, such as "Nashi", and extra-systemic groups, such as those of the skinheads. These various actors each have their own specific agendas; they employ different modes of public action, and receive unequal recognition from other segments of society. Yet many of them expose a reading of certain foreign policy events which is roughly similar to that of various state structures. These and related phenomena are analysed, interpreted and contextualised in papers by Luke March, Igor Torbakov, Jussi Lassila, Marlène Laruelle, and Lukasz Jurczyszyn.Table of ContentsIntroduction, by Marlene Laruelle 1. Book SynopsisThis astonishing book explores the delusional imaginings of Russia's past by the pseudo-scientific 'Alternative History' movement. Despite the chaotic collapse of two empires in the last century, Russia's glorious imperial past continues to inspire millions. The lively movement of 'Alternative History', diligently re-writing Russia's past and 'rediscovering' its hidden greatness, has been growing dramatically since the collapse of Communism in 1991. Virtually unknown in the West, these pseudo-historians have published best-selling books, attracted widespread media attention, and are a prominent voice in Internet discussions about Russian and world history. Alternative History claims that Russia is much older than Ancient Egypt, Greece and Rome; that the medieval Mongol Empire was in fact a Slav-Turk world empire; and that, in the twentieth century, duplicitous foreign powers stabbed Russia in the back and stole its empire. For its followers the key to Russia's greatness in the future lies in ensuring that Russians understand the true wealth of their past. Alternative history has become a popular therapy for Russians still coming to terms with the reality of Post-Soviet life. It is one of the forces shaping a new Russian nationalism and an important factor in the geopolitics of the twenty-first century.

Book SynopsisCombining social science with the multi-disciplinarity of area studies, Alexander Motyl discusses in fifteen essays the malleability and modernity of national identity, the attractions and limits of social constructivist imaginings of nations, the impact of national discourses, binary morality, and historical narratives on interpretations of the Holocaust and the Holodomor, the relationship between liberalism, nationalism, and fascism, and the role of national identity and nationalism in Eastern Europe in general and the Soviet Union, Ukraine, and Russia in particular. Throughout the chapters, Motyl questions conventional wisdom, exposes its inconsistencies and weaknesses, and encourages readers to rethink their views in light of conceptual clarity, theoretical rigor, elementary logic, and empirical evidence.

Book SynopsisThe present study explores concepts of ''nation'' and ''nationalism'' in early German Zionism before the First World War. Doing so, it focuses on a series of crucial issues and keynote debates in the contemporary Zionist press, particularly in the prominent Zionist newspaper Jüdische Rundschau. The introduction adapts current theories of Zionism, nationalism and postcolonial studies so as to provide a methodological framework of analysis for Diaspora Zionism. It argues that German Zionism is best understood in line with Homi K. Bhabhas notion of hybridity as it was characterized by a close affinity to various forms of German nationalism, while, at the same time, by its own distinctive albeit contradictory or counternarrative transformations of these adapted ideas.

Rupa Publications India Pvt Ltd. Brothers Against the Raj: A Biography of Indian
Book SynopsisSubhas Chandra Bose and his brother Sarat were among the most importanteaders of the Indian struggle for independence. Brothers Against the Raj is the definitive biography of the Bose brothers, placing them in the context of the Indian freedom struggle and the turbulent international politics of the period.eonard A. Gordon uses material gathered from archives, records and over 150 interviews he conducted with the brothers'' political contemporaries and family members, as well as hundreds of unpublishedetters, to bring toife once more two of India''s most controversialeaders during one of the most significant epochs in Indian history. [A] distinguished book... Mr. Gordon is a thorough scholar... one of the books of the year for 1990. Gordon has done full justice to the Bose brothers, giving them their due and recounting their story in the context of the turbulent times in which theyived. Professor Gordon has... conducted exhaustive and painstaking research and put its fruits into an eminently readable book. Besides, he has skilfully put the story of theirives into the context of the complex politics of India and Bengal of their times. The author is a New Yorker but knows Calcutta well... The entire distinguished family seems to come alive as he writes, but he is careful to paint them with their warts intact. [An] extraordinary, informative, and insightful study of Subhas and Sarat Bose. I have found the book informative and absorbing. [ Gordon has] managed to combine empathy with objectivity- not an easy feat.

Manohar Publishers and Distributors Who is A Brahmin
Book SynopsisBrahmins, originally in charge of the sacred sphere, followed different paths, creating therefore, within the community, many subcultures and ways of apprehending the world. From textual definitions to socio-economic adjustments, political influences and historical evolution, they went through multiple processes of identity building. Brahmin identity is indeed not an absolute notion. The various manifestations of Brahminical identities have to be pictured in contexts defined in connection with specific expressions of otherness. This book aims at understanding this dialogue between identity and otherness, creating phenomena of differentiation. The relations to a Brahmin model, the strategies to remain part of the elite, the discourses on secularism and casteism and identity repercussions of reservation policies in favour of backward populations are some of the factors which can elucidate the construction of such separate identities. So who is a Brahmin?

Pentagon Press China's Discursive Nationalism: Contending in
Book SynopsisDespite its comparatively monolithic-constitutive base in terms of a Han majority, China incessantly struggles to establish its legitimacy, both domestically and internationally, Towards this endeavor, China is increasingly relying on manifestation of soft-power techniques by creating a cultural ambience of the peaceful rise of China to achieve its nationalistic goals, further reinforced by an endemic discourse of nationalism. This work identifies a range of structural as well as personality factors which continue to shape the trajectory of domestic Chinese nationalism and its projection internationally. Beginning with the delineation of nationalism as understood by China's political leadership such as Sun Yatsen and Mao Zedong, a detailed analysis of the Chinese public and sphere in terms of its Internet, Literature, Cinema and Sports, especially the Beijing Olympics in 2008, has been made.
