WW Norton & Co A Season with the Witch: The Magic and Mayhem of
Book SynopsisSalem, Massachusetts, may be the strangest city on the planet. A single event in its 400 years of history—the Salem Witch Trials of 1692—transformed it into the Capital of Creepy in America. But Salem is a seasonal town—and its season happens to be Halloween. Every October, this small city of 40,000 swells to close to half a million as witches, goblins, ghouls, and ghosts (and their admirers) descend on Essex Street. For the fall of 2015, occult enthusiast and Edgar Award–winning writer J.W. Ocker moved his family of four to downtown Salem to experience firsthand a season with the witch, visiting all of its historical sites and macabre attractions. In between, he interviews its leaders and citizens, its entrepreneurs and visitors, its street performers and Wiccans, its psychics and critics, creating a picture of this unique place and the people who revel in, or merely weather, its witchiness.Trade Review"[A] lively chronicle—part travel guide, part history lesson…Ocker moves easily among the archivists, historians, and performers he interviews, and he describes the carnival atmosphere that descends upon “Witch City” with enthusiasm and vividness." -- Publisher's Weekly (starred review)"What better place to celebrate Halloween than Salem, Massachusetts? Festivities begin with a parade on October 1 and end with Halloween parties and costumed celebrations on October 31. In between, Ocker, a travel writer with an Edgar Award, and family stay the entire month, exploring Salem’s many attractions. Although the witch trials in 1692 only lasted for nine months, Salem has been branded “Witch City,” overshadowing its maritime history. Ocker samples everything: cemeteries, museums, gift shops, performances, wax museums, and more. He talks to street performers and street preachers as he tries to understand the appeals of the city. He interviews curators, haunters, costumed tour guides, a policeman, the mayor, and cemetery caretakers. Ocker devotes whole chapters to real witches, Nathaniel Hawthorne, and TV shows and movies set in Salem. His comic asides lighten the details of haunted houses, hangings, and hysteria without disrespecting the history. The result is a fresh, fun glimpse of a town that has come to grips with its sordid history and prospered. Armchair travelers will enjoy the trip." -- Booklist"An entertaining and historical guide to the varied sites of Salem, with Ocker interviewing everyone from the mayor to local archivists to men in scary costumes, covering burial sites of witch trial judges, and perhaps the most awesome Halloween street party ever described in print, with Ocker’s good humor and touch of sarcasm marking his readable style." -- Library Journal

Ryland, Peters & Small Ltd Tree Wisdom: A Journey of Wisdom, Symbols,
Book SynopsisDiscover how all trees can mirror us, teach us and heal us. As author Alice Peck reflected on the maple tree in her backyard, she began to notice and then study its intricacies and changes. This became her regular meditation and inspiration. In Tree Wisdom, Alice shares what she has learnt from that maple tree, and from the trees all around us. Every tree tells a complete and ongoing story – they evolve along a much more protracted timetable than humans. Alice explores trees from four perspectives: their roots – wisdom and understanding; their branches – symbols and rituals; their leaves – healing and science; and their seeds – transformation and spirituality. All of these elements show us how, although they live outside us, trees offer a path to our inner selves. Filled with insights from botany to poetry, ecology to mythology and herbalism to sacraments, Tree Wisdom explores the ways these grounded yet soaring entities can steady and move us, teach and transform us, inspire and comfort us.Trade ReviewI found myself feeling very zen while flipping through the pages. While Peck shares insights about each tree, Launay captures the tree’s spirit, bringing them to life – Musing Mystical

Mandrake of Oxford Tankhem: Seth & Egyptian Magick, Second Edition
Book SynopsisThe Typhonian deity Seth was once worshipped in Ancient Egypt. Followers of later schools obliterated Seth''s monuments, demonised and neglected his cult. A possible starting point in the quest for the ''hidden god'' is an examination of the life of Egyptian King Seti I (''He of Seth'') also known as Sethos. When looking for an astral temple that included all of the ancient Egyptian gods and goddesses, the temple of Seti I proved itself worthy of examination. Many secrets began to reveal themselves. The essence of the real philosophy of the Sethian and indeed what Satanism is, stems from the author''s astral wanderings in this temple. The temple is a real place, and like any temple no part of its design is accidental. It is a record in stone and paint of the Egyptian wisdom. It also fits quite well with the Thelemic mythos and tells lots of interesting things about the ancient Seth cult -- if you have the eye to see it.

Mandrake of Oxford German Stargazers Book of Astrology
Book SynopsisThis is the first English translation of "Astronomia Teutsch Astronomei", published in 1545 in Frankfurt am Main. The original work was one of the earliest astrological textbooks in the vernacular, predating William Lilly''s famous English primer Christian Astrology by over a decade. With this translation, Peter Stockinger offers the English reader an exciting insight into the working methods of a 16th century astrologer living on the cusp of the Late Medieval and Early Modern periods. The book contains a detailed introduction by the translator, providing valuable background information and historical context, and is comprehensively annotated throughout.

Mandrake of Oxford NakedTantra: Record of a magical year
Book SynopsisThere are many books on how to do magick, but not so many with stories about actually doing it and what happens. NAKEDTANTRA lays bare the inner states of the two brave souls involved in this extended magical work. An experiment, two people, two countries, one mind, experimenting in tantra meta-magick, cosmic astral travel to the land of no boundaries, looking for the doors of perception. Of necessity the contents of this grimoire might be considered erotic. And, with that thought in mind, it might also be that the reader is occasionally aroused by our story as it progresses. Some might find this an unwanted intrusion, into what is otherwise an exploration of a magical world. Others we surmise, will take this in good part, accepting that, a spoonful of sugar helps the medicine go down. To those who do not share these sensibilities, and are unmoved by what you are about to read, we offer our sincerest apologies.

Golden Hoard Press Ltd Michael Psellus on the Operation of Dæmons
Book SynopsisMichael Constantine Psellus (1018-1178 C.E) was one of the most notable writers and philosophers of the Byzantine era. The Byzantine domain was effectively the eastern Greek speaking part of the Roman Empire centred on Byzantium (Constantinople, modern Istanbul) which split off from the Latin West in 364 C.E. Its intellectual legacies helped lay the foundations for the Italian Renaissance. It was the fall of Constantinople in 1453 that released a tide of Greek reading scholars into Western Europe, particularly Venice. With them came much of the magical and Hermetic knowledge which the Greeks in their turn had inherited from the Egyptians. The Key of Solomon was one such text. It is therefore essential to the understanding of such magical texts that one understands exactly how the Byzantines understood the nature of daemons. Psellus forms the bridge between the ancient world, Byzantine Greek, and the grimoire conception of the nature of daemons. Hailing from Constantinople, Psellus' career was an illustrious and practical one, serving as a political advisor to a succession of emperors, playing a decisive role in the transition of power between various monarchs. He became the leading professor at the newly founded University of Constantinople, bearing the honorary title, 'Consul of the Philosophers'. He was the driving force behind the university curriculum reform designed to emphasise the Greek classics, especially Homeric literature. Psellus is credited with the shift from Aristotelian thought to the Platonist tradition, and was adept in politics, astronomy, medicine, music, theology, jurisprudence, physics, grammar and history.

Quagmire Press Ltd Murder & Mayhem: Canadian Ghost Stories
Book SynopsisWriter Dawn Sutherland gathers together ghost stories from across the country in this eerie compendium of stories about spirits that stay on this earthly plane after death. They may have unfinished business linked to a grisly or shocking murder-one they''ve committed, or their own! Fur trappers and prospectors would rather brave the snow and freezing temperatures of a Yukon winter night than take shelter in La Salle''s cabin, where they may come face to face with the murdered man''s malevolent spirit. James King''s six-year-old daughter knew her fur trader daddy wasn''t coming home long before his body was found outside of what is now Fort Saskatchewan, Alberta, when he visited her bedside to say goodbye The legend of the decapitated nun is so familiar in New Brunswick that folks walking along the Miramichi River still glance around to see if they can find her head Every seven years on Halloween since Mary Gallagher was decapitated with an axe, her ghost has wandered the corner of William and Murray streets in downtown Montreal The ghosts of two brothers gone bad still haunt the alleyways of Fredericton, New Brunswick, long after they were hanged in 1949 for the brutal murder of a cab driver When Charles Blessing wandered into Wellington Delaney Moses'' Barkerville, BC, barbershop only to disappear before his very eyes, Moses knew something bad had happened to his friend.
