  • Ashes to Light: A Holocaust Childhood and a Life

Bloomsbury Publishing PLC Ashes to Light: A Holocaust Childhood and a Life

    10 in stock

Book SynopsisBorn into a Jewish family in Lvov, Poland in the early-1930s, Nelly Ben-Or was to experience, at a very young age, the trauma of the Holocaust. This narrative of her life's journey describes the survival of Nelly, her mother and her older sister. With help from family and friends, Nelly and her mother were smuggled out of the Ghetto in Lvov and escaped to Warsaw with false identity papers where they were under constant threat of discovery. Miraculously, they survived being taken on a train to Auschwitz, deported not, in fact, because they were Jews, but as citizens of Warsaw following the Warsaw Uprising against the Nazis. After the end of the war, Nelly's musical talent was free to flourish, at first in Poland and then in the recently-created State of Israel, where Nelly completed her musical studies as a scholarship student at the Music Academy in Jerusalem. Following her move to England she carried out a full concert career and also discovered the Alexander Technique for piano playing, which had a profound influence on her. Today Nelly Ben-Or is internationally regarded as the leading exponent of the application of principles of the Alexander Technique - she teaches in the keyboard department of London's Guildhall School of Music and Drama, runs Alexander Technique masterclasses and regularly gives talks about her Holocaust experience. This unique memoir is testimony to an extraordinary life and illustrates the strength of the human condition when faced with adversity.Trade Review`An inspiring story, beautifully written, that tells of a young Jewish girl's survival in Nazi-occupied Poland, hidden by a series of righteous Christians who risked their lives by their actions, supported by a wealthy Uncle (also living a hidden life) and above all by the indomitable spirit and faith of the author and her mother. In hiding, the dream of Nelly Ben-Or was to become a concert pianist and after liberation we see her make this dream a reality, helped by her discovery of the Alexander Technique and, again, good people entering her life at the right times.' - Rabbi Dr Andrew Goldstein, President, Liberal Judaism, `This is a brilliant and deeply moving personal account. Nelly Ben-Or's retelling of a story, so familiar to us, is written through her own childhood's eyes in words of such poignant simplicity that they sing to us across the clamour of the intervening years. One cannot help but be moved to tears.' - Jonathan Vaughan, Vice Principal and Director of Music, Guildhall School of Music & Drama, `This eminently readable book is both historical and personal testimony, narrating Nelly's spiritual journey with enriching, introspective detail. Like her recitals, masterclasses, and summer courses, it promises to inspire pianists, musicians, scholars, as well as all those interested in the triumph of the human spirit over adversity.' - Dr Malcolm Miller, Hon Associate, the Open University and Editor of Arietta: Journal of the Beethoven Piano Society of Europe, "This is a deeply inspiring story, told with utmost honesty and simplicity. Caught up in the Holocaust, a young Jewish girl dreamed of becoming a concert pianist. The obstacles were unimaginable, but with courage and determination that is genuinely awe inspiring, she not only survived, but succeeded and made her dream into reality. Having related the extraordinary events of her life, Nelly Ben-Or expresses both her gratitude towards those who helped her and her desire to help young people today. She generously shares her knowledge, experience, and the underlying wellspring which is her passion for music". - Dr. Lillian Buss Pearson, formerly Associate Professor of Piano, Western Carolina UniversityTable of ContentsPreface Acknowledgements PART I: THE WAR YEARS 1 September 1939 - Nazis invade Poland Beginnings of the Nightmare In the ghetto and escape Continuous hiding Warsaw A brief haven of peace Trembacka Street, Warsaw Warsaw Uprising Proszkow - semi-freedom The last winter of the war End of Nazi Occupation Beginning of new life PART II: JOURNEYS THROUGH LIFE 13. • Intellect Books In Search of Tito’s Punks: On the Road in a

    10 in stock

Book SynopsisThe book traces the story of how a song recorded in 1981 by a young punk rock band from a cultural backwater on the English-Welsh border, and released on a tiny independent record label, became famous in a Yugoslavia formed in the image of Marshall Tito? Why was it 30 years before the members of the band found out? How did this ‘socialist’ country have one of the most vibrant punk scenes in the world? Gloucester, England, 1981; multi-racial, teenage street-punk band, Demob, recorded and released what would become their best known and most enduring song, No Room For You. A rasping vocal told the story of the 1979 closure of a short-lived, punk rock venue at a disused motel on the edge of the provincial city. Depending on your mind-set, the lyrics were either a howl of rage at the injustice, a wail at the loss, or a love-song to an era. More than three decades later, the author – and Demob’s bass player in 1981 – set out to follow the song across a country that no longer exists. On the road he heard the life stories of the heroes of Yugoslavian punk and the punks themselves; from the Tito era, through the disintegration and wars, forced displacements and permanent exiles, to today’s turbulent ‘reconstruction. Who were ’Tito’s punks’ and who are they now? An unvarnished but also affectionate portrait of Yugoslavia in the years before its demise through to the present, seen through the unlikely lens of punk and punk rockers. Part travelogue, part history the book is both, and neither, of those things. Rather, it is a mural and soundtrack of a journey through a time and place which no longer exists. The latest addition to the Global Punk series from Intellect.Trade Review'It’s a terrific read, equal parts travel memoir, rock’n’roll history, and bittersweet recollection of a country fractured and dismantled, seamlessly integrating past and present, politics and culture, and the alternating voices of the author and a variety of fascinating characters he meets on the way. Musicians and businessmen, artists and thugs, Bosnians, Serbs, Croats, and all the rest, thrown together and then torn apart, each with their own story to tell, by turns hilarious, inspiring, and tragic. Engaging, thoughtful, and shot through with a certain melancholy, much too sharp to be dismissed as mere nostalgia, for a time and place seeming lost forever. In Search of Tito’s Punks is one of the more interesting and original rock books to come along in some time.' -- Simon Harvey, Ugly Things Magazine'Barry Phillips has written a very important book here. It is important for understanding Yugo Punk, and has clear relevance [...] to the study of punk generally. More than that, by focusing on lived punk lives rather than on the politics, geopolitics, and the imagined primordial ancient hatreds that are held to define the Balkans, Phillips has made a significant contribution to Yugoslav and Balkan studies. This is an excellent book, an eye-opener both for those interested in the Balkans, and those interested in punk. And beautifully realised in print, paper, and card by the Punk Scholars Network, who clearly take book production as craft very seriously. Very punky. A must-read.' -- Mike Diboll, Toxic GrafityTable of ContentsForeword Acknowledgements Notes on Pronunciation Prologue: The Play-on Track: Teenage Kicks One: Scheveningen: Paint It Black Two: The Hague to Gruška 4 ALEKSANDAR DRAGAŠ: Club Limb, Zagreb Three: Zagreb: Black Lamb and Grey Falcon ZDENKO FRANJIĆ: Club 22, Prečko, Zagreb Four: To Ljubljana: On the Brotherhood and Unity Highway Five: A Day in Court: Vermeer in Bosnia ANTE ČIKARA: The Haven, Scheveningen and De Pijp, Amsterdam Six: Music Is the Art of Time PERO LOVŠIN: The Fish Market, Ljubljana Seven: The Ljubljana Punk Rock Taxi Tour MARIN ROSIĆ: On the Road in Ljubljana Eight: Return to Zagreb MATIJA VUICA AND JURE POPOVIĆ: The Bulldog, Central Zagreb Nine: Zagreb (1977) ... and Tito’s Coming to Town DARKO RUNDEK: Caffe Bar Albatros, Ljubljanica 4, Zagreb Ten: The Hague Hilton Eleven: Istria: Pirates and Punk Rock Heartlands RUJANA JEGER: Zagreb Twelve: Pula: Uljanik Calling SALE VERUDA: Forum Square, Pula Thirteen: England: Back to the Forest ROBERT ‘MIFF’ SMITH: Coleford, Gloucestershire, England Fourteen: To Belgrade: On the Brotherhood and Unity Highway Again Fifteen: Internacionalnih Brigada PETAR JANJATOVIĆ: Radost Fina Kuhinjica, Belgrade Sixteen: Lost in Belgrade Central BRANKO ROSIĆ: Belgrade café terrace Seventeen: Kafana Mornar: Belgrade Is Drowning POGONBGD, TRNJE AND FRIENDS: Kafana Mornar and Studio Mašina 23 Eighteen: Novi Sad, Vojvodina: Words and Bullets Nineteen: Novi Sad: NATO Bombs and Jew Street Ghosts STEVAN GOJKOV, VLADIMIR ‘RADULE’ RADUSINOVIĆ AND SAVA SAVIĆ: Central Novi Sad Twenty: To Kragujevac: On the Brotherhood and Unity Highway Once More VUJA (SAŠA VUJIĆ): Kragujevac Twenty One: Return to Belgrade: The House of Flowers Sleeve Notes: Standing at the Gates of the West: Hitsville Yugo Timeline: Yugoslavian Punk from 1975 Until Break-Up (VINKO BARIĆ) Selected Discography Index

Book SynopsisFor the last thirty years, singer Mary Black has been a dominant presence on the Irish music scene, an award-winning artist with many bestselling albums to her name. Now, in this long-awaited memoir, Mary takes us back to the roots of her musical heritage and to the influences that helped to shape her as an artist and a woman. Born into a musical family, Mary Black – a feisty tomboy who could hold her own when it came to sparring with her brothers and anyone else brave enough to take her on – began singing folk songs from the age of ten. Music played an important role in the family home and, performing with her brothers and her sister Frances, Mary built her highly successful career on the bedrock of these early years. From the pubs and clubs of her hometown, Dublin, she went on to perform in some of the most prestigious venues across the world. Always committed to exploring new material from the best writers, her unique talent attracted acclaim from critics, fellow artists and the public alike. It also led to a host of bestselling albums, including the multi-platinum No Frontiers, which spent more than a year in the Irish Top 30. Mary’s love of singing was matched only by the love she had for her family. As she recalls the inevitable tensions that arose when trying to juggle family life and a high-profile career, she tells of her struggle to combine the two contrasting aspects of her life. It was only through gritty determination, hard work and a fair amount of laughter that Mary was able to enjoy major success as an artist and, at the same time, raise a close and loving family with her husband Joe. Refreshingly honest, and written with warmth and humour, Down the Crooked Road offers a unique insight into the life and career of one of our most gifted singers – an artist who, during the course of her long career, has captured the hearts of millions around the world.

Kahn & Averill French Pianism: An Historical Perspective

    7 in stock

Book SynopsisThe undisputed pre-eminence of Paris as a centre of the piano world dates from the early 19th century, and the professors of the Paris Conservatoire transmitted the characteristic French style to each new generation for some 150 years. First published in 1992, this study surveys the historical development, performances practices, and pedagogical philosophies of this school of piano playing. The author studied with several proponents of the jeu perle, a French style of playing categorized by rapid, clean even passage-work, note after note. Over a 15-year period Charles Timbrell conducted more than 70 interviews with notable French pianists, many of them new to this edition and all of them frank and lively conversationalists, ranging from a 96-year old Paul Loyonnet - a link to the traditions of the 19th century - to emerging young talents at the turn of the millennium. Also included in this edition are the author's detailed recollections of his own lessons with such luminaries as Gaby Casadesus, Jeanne-Marie Darre, Monique Haas, Eric Heidsieck and Magda Tagliaferro.Trade Review'This book should be in the libraries of all graduate and undergraduate institutions where the piano is taught.' - Choice; 'This is a book that delights and is also an invaluable document, one that is obviously the fruit of much imaginative planning ... Many historic artists come colourfully to life at the prompting of Charles Timbrell.' - Notes; 'French Pianism ... is full of advice worth hundreds of private lessons [and it] offers illuminating interviews. A notable book.' - Clavier; 'A lucid and precise volume about the history and aesthetics of the French ways of playing the piano, [with] substantial bibliography and instructive lists of exercises, methods, etudes, and editions.' - Piano & Keyboard; 'An invaluable contribution ... The discussion of pedagogical principles, and the insights about the complex elements that led to an important national school of playing, are both interesting and of great value.' - American Music TeacherTable of ContentsForeword by Gaby Casadesus; Preface; 1. Book Synopsis"Can you read music too?" This question, addressed by the singer Lili Kraus in 1936 to the 15 year-old Robert Brouwer, then a regular autograph collector haunting the artist's entrance of the Amsterdam Concertgebouw, was the start of his short but memorable years as a page-turner to many of the great musicians who performed there before 1940. The author's passion for music, starting with his time at the Concertgebouw and continuing throughout his life in many parts of the world, shines vividly in the pages of this book. Here, enlivened with photographs and with some of the gems from the author's youthful collection of autographs, we meet many of the greatest musicians of the 20th century. But there is more than that. From his discussion of Willem Mengelberg, the conductor who made the Concertgebouw Orchestra great but ended his life in eclipse, to his account of Nigel Kennedy taking time off to jam in a "hole-in-the-wall" night club in Kowloon, it is the authors' gift to relate, on a personal level to the musicians he met, that serves to make these recollections of what they did and said, and of the opinions they expressed, both fascinating and endearing.

Book Synopsis**The Sunday Times Number One Bestseller** **Audiobook shortlisted for the Specsavers National Book Awards 2018** Gary Barlow is one of the most successful British musicians and songwriters of all time, but fifteen years ago, as he himself admits, he hit rock bottom - he was out of shape, out of work and depressed. His mental and physical health were at an all-time low, and he struggled to see a way out. Faced with an underperforming solo career, tireless media taunts and other cruel twists of fate, Gary turned to food. For nine years, he struggled with his weight and went on every diet imaginable. Fasting, extreme dieting, and binge eating saw him on a seemingly unstoppable downward spiral for which he eventually sought professional help, asking a doctor what the 'cure' for obesity was. That was the moment he realised that he would have to dramatically change his life and relationship with food. So how did he go from an obese, out-of-work pop star to one of the UK's favourite superstars of music and TV, as well an accomplished musical songwriter and producer who is full of vitality, fitter, happier and more successful than ever before?" In this extraordinarily honest memoir, Gary tells of his journey back to mental and physical health, as well as musical success. A Better Me is a remarkably frank account of Gary's life as he battled with his demons, endured devastating personal tragedy, and recovered his health from the extremities of disordered eating and obesity. In his warm, witty and authentic voice, Gary recounts his story with compelling insight, captivating sincerity and a human side that people rarely see. From overcoming his weight problems and crippling obsession with food, to returning with a critically and commercially successful Take That and reigniting his own legendary song-writing career, going beyond recorded music to forge success on TV with The X Factor and Let It Shine, this is the story of how Gary found balance in both his personal and professional life. Here is one of the UK's most beloved pop stars, more open, honest and raw than ever before.

It was the last interview Lennon would ever give - just hours later, outside that same building, Lennon was shot dead by a twenty-five-year-old man (whom Kaye refuses to refer to by name) whom Kaye herself had encountered after finishing the interview and stepping outside onto the street. Kaye has beaten herself up ever since over her failure to recognise that the assassin - who blocked her path and harassed her with questions like "Did you talk to him?" and "Did you get his autograph?" posed a danger and should have been reported. Book SynopsisBruce Springsteen has been cherished by his fans for decades, from his early days playing high school gymnasiums through globally successful albums and huge stadium shows to solo performances in intimate theaters. As his long and illustrious career has evolved, the legendary devotion of his fans has remained a constant. Springsteen fans have become worthy of study in their own right, with books, memoirs, and even a movie documenting their passion and perspectives. But his fans are not monolithic, and surprisingly little attention has been paid to why so many women from across the world adore The Boss. Mary Climbs In illuminates this once overlooked but increasingly important and multi-faceted conversation about female audiences for Springsteen’s music. Drawing on unique surveys of fans themselves, the study offers insight into women’s experiences in their own voices. Authors Lorraine Mangione and Donna Luff explore the depth of women fans’ connection to Springsteen and the profound ways this connection has shaped their lives. Reflections from fans enliven each page as readers journey through the camaraderie and joy of concerts, the sorrow and confusion of personal loss and suffering, the love and closeness of community, and the search for meaning and for the self. Viewed through a psychological lens, women fans’ relationship with Springsteen is revealed in all its complexity as never before. Mary Climbs In is an important interdisciplinary contribution to the growing field of Springsteen studies and a must-read for any fan. Trade Review"[Bruce Springsteen is] seen as one of the quintessential writers of male experience, but as this new book explores, his resonance with female listeners is just as complex."— Herpreet Kaur Grewal, The Guardian "This project is an important interdisciplinary contribution to what is now a bona fide discourse of Springsteen studies. It takes a uniquely empirical approach to the subject, and illuminates a once overlooked, but now increasingly important and multifaceted conversation about female audiences for Springsteen’s music."— Jim Cullen, author of Martin Scorsese and the American Dream “I recommend Mary Climbs In to Springsteen fans and music enthusiasts without hesitation; it gets you excited about music and the power of its influence. In a world of competing obligations, putting aside enjoyable activities is easy. Mary Climbs In offers readers an indulgent opportunity to embrace what they love without reservation.”— Psychology of Women Quarterly "In their book Mary Climbs In, Lorraine Mangione and Donna Luff – a professor of psychology and a sociologist, respectively – make the case that Springsteen’s music has deep appeal to women, speaking to them on a number of levels and about different subjects...The overall devotion of Springsteen’s fans is also worth noting...[, and] many of the first-person testimonials from fans in Mary Climbs In speak to the depth of this connection."— Steve Pfarrer, Daily Hampshire Gazette “Mary Climbs In offers an important entry in rock music scholarship. In addition to providing a contribution to the burgeoning arena of fan studies, Mangione and Luff afford readers a vital window into the female experience vis-à-vis rock ‘n’ roll.” — Kenneth Womack, author of Solid State: The Story of "Abbey Road" and the End of the BeatlesTable of ContentsIntroduction 1 1 Women Fans of Bruce Springsteen: Why Listen to Them and What Might They Tell Us? 5 2 "The Ties That Bind": Becoming and Staying a Fan 21 3 "Hey Little Girl": Women on Springsteen and Women 47 4 Springsteen as Friend or Family Member 71 5 Teacher of Life, Guide of the Spirit 95 6 Walking the Path Together through Darkness: Springsteen as Therapist 119 7 From New Jersey to the World: The Guy on the Boardwalk Becomes a Cultural Icon 151 8 Twenty-First-Century Legacy: What Does the Gypsy See Now? 175 9 "Further on up the Road" 199 Acknowledgments 209 References 215 Discography 225 Permissions 227 Index 000
