Aarhus University Press Harbingers of Twentieth-Century Neo-classicism
Book SynopsisIn this pioneering musicological study the Danish emeritus professor Finn Egeland Hansen proposes that the classical-romantic main current of the 19th century in fact represents two sub-currents, the one focusing on the romantic aspects, the other focusing on the classical aspects of its musical style. His thesis is discussed with excerpts from the standard musicological literature plus writings by Saint-Saëns, and Finn Egeland Hansen exemplifies his argument in readings of the music by three stylistically different composers – the French Camille Saint-Saëns and Charles Gounod and the Danish Niels W. Gade. Finn Egeland Hansen labels these harbingers’ style as retro-classicism.

Amsterdam University Press Music Generations in the Digital Age: Social
Book SynopsisWhat do we do when we listen? The act of engagement with music in everyday life may seem simple on the surface but participation, interpretation, circulation and cultural production in the digital age are more complex and entangled than ever before. It is especially so in Japan, with its vast multimedia idol and vocaloid industries. This unique ethnographic work at the intersection of cultural, media and music studies covers a wide spectrum of music-related activities embedded in the daily lives of two Japanese cohorts. The varied case studies, including teen idol groups and virtual idols, aid the detailed examination of the relation between music, generation, and society.Trade Review“Music is so often the unthinking backdrop to our lives: ‘Music generations in the digital age’ spotlights our everyday music practices, elegantly uncovering the intertwined meanings, emotions and identities that music listening brings into being, and revealing the deeper implications for audience agency, digital media power, and generational change.” Sonia Livingstone, London School of Economics and Political Science “Approaching the elusive and intimate sphere of music listening practices through the lens of an ethnographic study of different generations of music listeners in contemporary Japan, Zaborowski’s Music generations in the digital age provides an example of Cultural Studies at its very best. His engagement with what happens for and with listeners who share and hold close music or participate and perform karaoke is underpinned by a profound and insightful theorisation of generation, emotion and audience.” Shakuntala Banaji, London School of Economics and Political Science "Music Generations in the Digital Age combines audience studies with music studies to produce a fine-grained analysis of generations dubbed ‘the lost’ and ‘the relaxed’ in Japan. Highlighting intergenerational music consumption, yet showing that music and artists can have very different generational meanings, Zaborowski develops a new approach to music’s ‘circuit of culture’. Exploring parasocial relations and the fans of virtual idols, this book brilliantly documents how music generations produce pop’s sometimes surprising and always salient meanings. Listen to Rafal Zaborowski — you’ll think about music, culture and generational identities in a whole new way after reading this superb study." Matt Hills, University of Huddersfield "The difficulty of making sense of music’s powerful individual meanings within their social context has meant music audiences have been neglected, and Japanese music audiences doubly so. Rafal Zaborowski’s book represents a huge step forward in our understanding of contemporary Japan’s music cultures, with subtle reflections too on intergenerational relations and celebrity culture – a remarkable achievement." Nick Couldry, author of 'Inside Culture and Why Voice Matters' "Music Generations in the Digital Age constitutes a unique and valuable contribution to the fields of popular music studies, Japanese studies, media studies, and Japan-centered ethnomusicology." Amsterdam University Press Music Worlding in Palau: Chanting, Atmospheres,
Book SynopsisMusic Worlding in Palau: Chanting, Atmospheres, and Meaningfulness is a detailed study of the performing arts in Palau, Micronesia as holistic techniques enabling the experiential corporeality of music’s meaningfulness – that distinctly musical way of making sense of the world with which the felt body immediately resonates but which, to a significant extent, escapes interpretive techniques. Drawing on long-term ethnographic research alongside Pacific Islander and neo-phenomenological conceptual frameworks, Music Worlding in Palau distinguishes between meaning(s) and meaningfulness in Palauan music-making. These are not binary phenomena, but deeply intertwined. However, unlike meaning(s), meaningfulness to a significant extent suspends language and is thus often prematurely considered ineffable. The book proposes a broader understanding of how the performing arts give rise to a sense of meaningfulness whose felt-bodily affectivity is pivotal to music-making and lived realities. Music Worlding in Palau thus seeks to draw the reader closer to the holistic complexity of music-making both in Palau and more generally.Table of ContentsAcknowledgments Music Worlding in Palau: An Introduction Meaningfulness Music Worlding Intensity Atmospheres This Book Music Worlding in Palau Music Worlding in Palau: The Background 1 Latmikaik’s Children and Their Music Palau North Atlantic narratives of Palauan history Meaningfulness Schmitz on Meaningfulness Surfaceless: Beyond the Binaries Musical Meaning | Musical Meaningfulness Musical Meaningfulness and Atmospheres 2 Vaguely Specific: Resonant Historicity with Chesóls Chesols Meaningfulness Suggestions of Motion Sound’s History Lives on Intensity: A Closer Look Musical Meaningfulness as Latently Historical Conclusion 3 Listening with the Dancing Body: Ruk and Movement’s Incipiency A Sense of Klebelau: Going through the Motions The Body Complex and Sound Schmitz and the Threshold Preacceleration | Suggestions of Motion The Dance of the Not-Yet in New Phenomenological Perspective: mSuggestions of Motion in Palauan Ruk Body percussion Group shouts Rhythmic layering and densification Conclusion: The Body in Sound and Motion 4 “Rak, Where Is He Now?” Presence | Present Present, Presence, Meaningfulness Omengeredakl Sense Effects | Presence Effects Music, Meaning, and Meaningfulness Meaningfully Present 5 Resonance: Co-Becoming with Sound Ngerulmud 2006: The Mother Bat Resonance Resonance: Conceptual Implications Revisiting the Mother Bat Conclusion 6 Of Magic and Meaningfulness : Chelitákl Rechuódel and the Felt-bodily Dimensions of Spiritual Practice Magic | Olai Present-day Magic Magically Meaningful Conclusion Glossary Bibliography Index

The Chinese University Press A Critical History of New Music in China
Book SynopsisBy the end of the nineteenth century, Chinese culture had fallen into a stasis, and intellectuals began to go abroad for new ideas. What emerged was an exciting musical genre that C. C. Liu terms "new music." With no direct ties to traditional Chinese music, "new music" reflects the compositional techniques and musical idioms of eighteenth- and nineteenth-century European styles. Liu traces the genesis and development of "new music" throughout the twentieth century, deftly examining the social and political forces that shaped "new music" and its uses by political activists and the government.Trade ReviewA valuable volume for any serious scholar of recent Chinese music and culture." —Choice

Ian Randle Publishers,Jamaica Man Vibes: Masculinities in Jamaican Dancehall
Book SynopsisIn Jamaica, dancehall music and culture has become perhaps the most prominent expression of Jamaican popular culture. Taking its name from dance halls in which popular local recordings were played by sound systems, the concept of Dancehall as a cultural space has rapidly gained momentum in the last three decades as deejay stars enjoy unprecedented successes locally and internationally. Donna Hope builds on her earlier work on popular culture and theories of sexuality/gender to examine the process and progress of Jamaican masculinities. Man Vibes: Masculinities in Jamaican Dancehall explores Jamaican masculinity through the male-dominated dancehall space that is at once a celebration of the marginalized poor and also a challenge to social inequality. Using the major masculine debates that are articulated in dancehall music and culture, Hope explores the transition of Jamaican masculinity in the 21st century. The dancehall representations of Ole Dawg (promiscuity), Badman (violence), Chi Chi Man (anti-male homosexuality), Bling Bling (consumerist/consumptive) and Fashion Ova Style (stylized transgressions and homosexuality) are all used to evaluate the relationship between dancehall culture and the hegemonic standard of masculine. Man Vibes significantly advances the Cultural Studies agenda and acts as a contemporary reader by speaking not only to dancehall music and culture’s masculinities but to Jamaican and Black masculinities in general.

The American University in Cairo Press Music and Media in the Arab World
Book SynopsisThis book includes key issues of contemporary Arab society addressed through the culture of music. Since the turn of the twentieth century the dramatic rise of mass media has profoundly transformed music practices in the Arab world. Music has adapted to successive forms of media dissemination - from phonograph cylinders to MP3s - each subjected to the political and economic forces of its particular era and region. Carried by mass media, the broader culture of Arab music has been thoroughly transformed as well. Simultaneously, mass mediated music has become a powerful social force. While parallel processes have unfolded worldwide, their implications in the Arabic-speaking world have thus far received little scholarly attention. This provocative volume features sixteen new essays examining these issues, especially televised music and the controversial new genre of the music video. Perceptive voices - both emerging and established - represent a wide variety of academic disciplines. Incisive essays by Egyptian critics display the textures of public Arabic discourse to an English readership. Authors address the key issues of contemporary Arab society - gender and sexuality, Islam, class, economy, power, and nation - as refracted through the culture of mediated music. Interconnected by a web of recurrent concepts, this collection transcends music to become an important resource for the study of contemporary Arab society and culture.
