LID Publishing The Haier Model: Reinventing a multinational

    5 in stock

Book SynopsisSince its origins in the 1920s as a refrigerator factory in Qingdao supplying the Chinese market, Haier has risen to become a major multinational company, overtaking the likes of Whirlpool and LG, to become the world's leading manufacturer of household appliances today, with revenues of $30 billion. How did Haier achieve this amazing feat? This book examines Haier's organizational transformation, which can be traced back to 1984 when Zhang Ruimin (Haier's current CEO) joined the company, and which became the essence of Haier's sustained competitive advantage. In particular, it looks at the "RDHY Win-Win Model of Employee-Customer Integration", the latest management practice in Haier, which has had a profound effect on the company's performance, and which has captured the attention of academics and managers around the world.

Verso Books The People's Republic of Walmart: How the World’s

Book SynopsisFor the left and the right, major multinational companies are held up as the ultimate expressions of free-market capitalism. Their remarkable success appears to vindicate the old idea that modern society is too complex to be subjected to a plan. And yet, as Leigh Phillips and Michal Rozworski argue, much of the economy of the West is centrally planned at present. Not only is planning on vast scales possible, we already have it and it works. The real question is whether planning can be democratic. Can it be transformed to work for us? An engaging, polemical romp through economic theory, computational complexity, and the history of planning, The People's Republic of Walmart revives the conversation about how society can extend democratic decision-making to all economic matters. With the advances in information technology in recent decades and the emergence of globe-straddling collective enterprises, democratic planning in the interest of all humanity is more important and closer to attainment than ever before.Trade ReviewProvocative and lively book. * Morning Star *Philips and Rozworski's book is a timely exhortation to rethink the wisdom that markets always do it better. -- Hettie O'Brien * New Statesman *People's Republic of Walmart is fast-paced and provocative. It offers readers a refreshing perspective on today's highly planned capitalist enterprises, and the prospect of a new form of democratic, transparent and socialist planning. -- Ann Pettifor * TLS *

Book SynopsisInternational Management focuses on the most crucial challenge faced by managers of multinational companies today -- that of the generation and transfer of knowledge across national settings, organizations and networks.Trade Review"Gooderham and Nordhaug have succeeded in finding just the right spot in the triangle of strategy, cultural understanding, and organisation management. Their book is immediately usable comes with excellent cases, and focuses on the key issues of cross national organisational management. It is also one of those rare academic texts that is clear to read while offering superb insight and depth. I like their book and am happy to recommend it." Michael Segalla, Dept of Management and HRM, Groupe HEC "In times where the human side of corporations becomes more and more crucial, Gooderham and Nordhaug's book International Management offers important insights and inspiration to both multinational companies and students on how companies globalise their human knowledge and competencies and balance their global and local responsibilities." Majken Schultz, Professor, Copenhagen Business School "We are moving fast into a global world where the managerial challenge is to generate and transfer knowledge across boundaries. Gooderham and Nordhaug illuminate the different aspects of this challenge in terms of structure, competence development, and people - and not least the ehthical dilemmas for multinational leaders. Their book provides a holistic yet practical perspective, with well chosen cases that make this come alive for the reader." Paul Evans, INSEAD "This book is about modern management of multinational corporations. Developing key competences within networks requires new approaches, and this book provides that. It is particularly good to see rich, specific company cases that help the reader to focus on implementation of management practices. The book is equally important when it comes to developing new, fruitful concepts that can be applied in real business life. It is an excellent piece of work." Peter Lorange, IMD, Switzerland "Many speak of the linkage between human resources, competencies, organisational performance and the context multinational companies operate within. The text by Gooderham and Nordhaug provides an overview of this. Clearly written, with a convincing theoretical background and numerous real business cases and examples, it constitutes an ideal basis for students interested in the subject of multinationals and their roles in the contemporary global economic landscape." Book SynopsisTrade Review‘Mark Casson remains the leading intellectual in international business research. Written in plain language, compellingly argued and charting a new path to think about international business, Casson’s book on Global Business is not for aficionados of mundane echo chambers, but for those who want to change the status quo.’ -- Alain Verbeke, University of Calgary, Canada‘From a multi-level perspective, with time thrown in, Professor Casson provides much needed light and shade on the genesis of theory within international business (IB) and the academic field’s unwelcome narrowing. His expositions and excursions are an invitation to the reader to think, and to be part of the solution.’ -- Jeremy Clegg, Leeds University Business School, UK‘Mark Casson put an intellectual stamp on the theory of global business fifty years ago when introducing internalization theory. In this book, Casson continues his relentless and ambitious effort to develop a social science of international business by integrating history, location choice, and theories of decision making and complexity.’ -- Sjoerd Beugelsdijk, University of South Carolina, US‘Mark Casson is a thought leader in the true sense of the term. Where others rely on buzzwords, his work is based on analysis and logic. Where others follow fads and fashion, he focuses on issues and problems that are so fundamental that they remain important for scholars and practitioners long after his work has been published. Therefore, I read this new work by Professor Casson with great interest. He brings a welcome integration of international politics and international relations with international business, a synthesis that was long overdue. He intertwines international business analysis with international strategy and breaks down siloed thinking in the process. And he steps back to take a much longer term view of international business by using the lens and methodology of business history. While I do not agree with everything in this book, Professor Casson’s logic is, as always, impeccable. If one accepts his assumptions, his conclusions cannot be denied.’ -- Ram Mudambi, Temple University, USTable of ContentsContents: Introduction PART I POLICY ISSUES FOR THE FUTURE 1. Book SynopsisInpatriates have become an important means of knowledge transfer within multinational companies. As such, the authors of Expatriates: Perspectives and Challenges of the 21st Century attempt to extract information regarding the knowledge transfer processes and inpatriates'' behavioral patterns. To provide a rich understanding of these processes from the inpatriates'' perspective, critical incidents reported by 22 inpatriates are content-analyzed. The expansion of expatriates has been associated with multinational corporations'' offshore production strategies. As livable built environments can attract and retain these expatriate workers in the host city, this compilation investigates how foreign direct investment flows are associated with human capital flows in a case study of Koreans in Suzhou, China. The concluding chapter discusses how, despite corporate globalization and the evolution of technology over the last 2 decades, we have observed a continuous increase in the number of employees deployed on international assignment. In fact, according to Finaccord, expatriate growth has been at a compound annual rate of 5.8% since 2013 and by 2021 the number forecast is 87.5 million. Since scholastic study abroad programs are now included in the curriculum of most post-secondary schools it is no surprise that 8.5% of expatriates are in this sector.

Book SynopsisWe humans live by stories, says David Korten, and the stories that now govern our society set us on a path to certain self-destruction. In this profound new book, Korten shares the results of his search for a story that reflects the fullness of human knowledge and understanding and provides a guide to action adequate to the needs of our time.Korten calls our current story Sacred Money and Markets. Money, it tells us, is the measure of all worth and the source of all happiness. Earth is simply a source of raw materials. Inequality and environmental destruction are unfortunate but unavoidable. Although many recognize that this story promotes bad ethics, bad science, and bad economics, it will remain our guiding story until replaced by one that aligns with our deepest understanding of the universe and our relationship to it.To guide our path to a viable human future, Korten offers a Sacred Life and Living Earth story grounded in a cosmology that affirms we are living beings born of a living Earth itself born of a living universe. Our health and well-being depend on an economy that works in partnership with the processes by which Earthâs community of life maintains the conditions of its own existence - and ours. Offering a hopeful vision, Korten lays out the transformative impact adopting this story will have on every aspect of human life and society.

Book SynopsisThis volume takes stock of the latest international business research on the relationship between European multinational enterprises (MNEs) and their policy environment. The volume brings together a variety of scholarly contributions from an European perspective. European MNEs were amongst the earliest to internationalize and many now command globally dispersed operations. European MNEs pioneered the multi-centric organizational form, which can be interpreted in part as an effort to address the policy challenges facing these firms in environments fraught with natural and government-imposed market imperfections. The volume covers four dimensions of MNE corporate strategy in the face of complex policy environments: corporate strategic responses to national policy institutions; pro-active institution-oriented strategies; dynamics of international business-government relations; and, corporate strategies in turbulent times.Table of ContentsList of Contributors. Book SynopsisThe organizational design of the Multinational Corporation (MNC) was a vibrant area of research in the field of International Business and Management during the 1970-1990's. However, since then this research has largely faded from our scholarship. This volume of AIM is designed to spark new life into the research on the organizational design of the MNC. The world - and environmental forces - has changed substantially in the last decades placing new constrains on the MNCs. External shocks have increased and MNCs need to learn how to live with this increased market volatility. Integrating value chains makes MNCs more efficient but also vulnerable. The relentless forces of competition and globalization are forcing MNCs to divide their activities and reach for foreign inputs, markets and partners. By dividing their value chain into discrete pieces -- - some to be performed in-house, while others are outsourced to partner organizations -- - MNCs hope to reduce overall costs and risks, while also reaping the benefits of ideas from contractors or alliance partners worldwide. These challenges call for new research on the organizational design of the MNC. It is our intention with this AIM volume to motivate new research on the proper organizational design mechanisms of MNCs as of today.Table of ContentsOrganizational Reconfiguration and Strategic Response: The Case of Offshoring. Book SynopsisAnalyzing the role of multinational investors in emerging Asian economies and the implications for regional economic integration, this astute study examines the increasing role being played by Asian countries in the global economy.Encompassing a large number of diverse manufacturing and service sectors, this book highlights the cultural and strategic challenges faced by multinational investors in the region in which they invest. It shows that despite high rates of economic growth in Asian countries presenting multinational traders and investors with unparalleled market opportunities, there have been only tentative moves towards regional economic integration. Areas such as trade facilitation, uniform customs clearance, removal of non-tariff barriers and labour deployment issues are yet to be adequately addressed. Multifaceted and multidimensional in approach, Emerging Asian Economies and MNCs Strategies will appeal to students and scholars of Asian economies and business management in the region. Its presentation of the sociopolitical and investment environment will also prove invaluable in informing business investors targeting southeast Asian markets.Contributors include: B. Andreosso-O'Callaghan, N. Callinan, C. Dathe, S. Dzever, W. Feng, B. Gupta, J. Jaussaud, J.-L. Mucchielli, F. Nicolas, R. Taylor, U. Uprasen, W. Wei, P. Yu, G. Zhao, B. ZolinTrade ReviewTaylor and Andresso-O'Callaghan's new book is a very welcome addition to the literature on Asian economic integration in the context of its barriers, problematic decision-making of regional bodies and infrastructure. They use a plethora of international experts to cover a varied and disparate range of areas, including: regional production networks; food supply chain; R&D location strategies; outward investment into the EU; expatriation policies; innovation in food processing small firms and ICT using Samsung as a case. One of the most interesting and perceptive pieces is Taylor's on labour mobility and human resources and the need for corporate cultures to adapt to indigenous cultural values and norms and emergence of hybrid systems of management. This stands in useful contrast to the often naive navel-gazing and ethnocentric assertions of too much US-UK management literature. --Chris Rowley, Korea University, Nottingham University, UK, Griffith University, Australia and City University, London, UKThis is a very valuable contribution to the literature on emerging Asian economies and MNCs strategies. It covers an impressive range of countries and corporations. The eminent authors show how, in a post-state socialist world, there are several implications for both domestic and overseas firms functioning successfully in the transitional periphery. With the complex mix of political and market mediation and informal personal ties, chapters explore the delicate balance of liberalisation in transitional economies. Detailed examples from specific countries in Eurasia and Central Asia such as Belarus, Turkey, Azerbaijan, Mongolia, Uzbekistan, Armenia and Georgia are discussed alongside broader thematic issues of economic and social change, labour relations and human resource management. Most importantly, it is shown that liberalisation has little connection to short-term business growth. To succeed in such contexts, international firms need to be both pragmatic and creative, in coping with malleable yet durable forms of institutional mediation. Providing a unique perspective on the transitional economic periphery and much-needed insights from international business, this book is essential reading for researchers and graduate students studying transitional economies, non-traditional business models, institutional persistence and change, political and economic development and management in economically transitioning countries.Table of ContentsContents: Introduction: Geoffrey Wood and Mehmet Demirbag PART I TRANSITIONAL PERIPHERY: CENTRAL ASIA 1. Book SynopsisThe Development of International Business offers an extensive understanding of contemporary international business through detailed, engaging discussion of the development of the multinational enterprise (MNE) over the past half-century. By providing an analytically informed basis for understanding MNEs, two parallel strands of analysis in International Business (IB) are reviewed: the `theoretical' and the `practical'. Firstly, Robert Pearce identifies how the practical restructuring of the MNE as an organisational form has responded to changes in the wider global economy and how this evolution has interacted with the enrichment of theory on the topic. Secondly, by tracing the persisting dynamics of the MNE's structure and strategic positioning, he demonstrates the use of these systems and how they can help to understand and organise the future evolution of not only MNEs but of international business as a whole. Highly accessible with an informed overview of the entire IB subject area, The Development of International Business is an essential text for students and academics of business, management, economics and development. More generally, business leaders, economists and politicians will value the exceptional insight into the progression of international business and its future.Trade Review'As a distinguished founder-member of the ''Reading School'', Bob Pearce provides a comprehensive account of the evolution of international business theory from the 1950s to the present day. He shows how, unlike abstract economic theories, international business theory has always been rooted in evidence on the behaviour of individual multinational firms. He provides a fascinating narrative of the early days of international business research, which he embeds within a broad thematic view. This book is indispensable reading for all serious scholars of international business studies.' --Mark Casson, University of Reading, UK'This tour de force gives us the very first, timely narrative history of the birth and growth of IB as a new discipline over the past half century. Robert Pearce lucidly interprets the major theoretical traces left by innovative economists whose frameworks built the foundation of the discipline. He weaves out a thought-provocative tapestry that demonstrates how national enterprises transform themselves into multinationals as they adapt to, and reshape, their altering global ecosystem - in a co-evolutionary fashion. The book is highly recommended as an ideal read to learn the conceptual warp and woof of IB.' --Terutomo Ozawa, Colorado State University, USTable of ContentsContents: 1. Book SynopsisMultinational enterprises (MNEs) are believed to contribute towards economic development of host countries through foreign direct investment (FDI), which results in poverty alleviation and human empowerment through linkages and spillovers with local stakeholders. However, earlier research demonstrates that the positive impact of FDI is often inconclusive. There is thus a gap in understanding the link between the activities of MNEs in developing countries and their impact on socio-economic development. This volume reports the results of a large international ‘MNEmerge’ research project, financed by the European Commission, and provides an understanding of the impact of MNEs on United Nations Millennium Development Goals and successive Sustainable Development Goals in developing countries. Trade ReviewBusiness scholars report the findings of a study on how multinational corporations can contribute to sustainable economic development. They pay special attention to the formation of linkages between subsidiary and local stakeholders such as society, business, and government. Their topics include the impact of multinational enterprises on sustainable development and poverty reduction, the contribution of the pharmaceutical business to the health status of the developing world, business-led new market creation in emerging countries: the case of Bt cotton, business and building capabilities in Ghana, and sustainable energy and development: the "Light for All" program in Brazil. -- Annotation ©2017 * (protoview.com) *Table of ContentsIntroduction: How multinational enterprises can contribute to achieving sustainable development goalsThe impact of multinational enterprises on sustainable development and poverty reduction: Research framework The contribution of the Pharmaceutical Industry to the health status of the developing world MNEs contribution to the Indian pharmaceutical sector On nudging MNE towards SDG1: a policy perspective MNE led new market creation in Emerging Countries: The case of Bt cotton Returns from Strategies Adopted by MNEs to Improve Global Health and Wellbeing: Third Sustainable Development Goal MNEs and Capabilities Building in Ghana MNEs' Contribution to Sustainable Energy and Development: the case of 'Light for All' Program in Brazil Multinational Enterprises, Sustainable Development and Poverty Alleviation: Past, Present and Future

Book SynopsisThis research and teaching volume has been composed in honour of Rosalie Tung, a distinguished institution builder, thought leader and educator in the field of international business (IB). The volume addresses Rosalie Tung’s main research focus in a career that has already spanned several decades, namely the analysis of distance facing multinational enterprises (MNEs), with a focus on state-of-the-art conceptual and fact-based empirical developments in the realm of cultural and institutional distance elements. The impact of distance on international business transactions and operations remains ill-understood. How should distance be conceptualized? Which dimensions of distance should be considered? Is distance always a cost, or can it sometimes confer value? This twelfth volume in the Progress in International Business Research series presents extensive accounts of the contemporary scientific debate on how to assess the impacts of distance, both negative and positive ones, on the conduct of international business. This volume covers five dimensions related to the concept, cost and value of distance, in International business: • The concept of distance • The cost of cultural and psychic distance • The cost of institutional distance • The value of distance • Alternative lenses for IB researchTrade ReviewBusiness scholars explore the impact of distance on international trade from the perspectives of the concept of distance, the cost of cultural and psychic distance, the cost of institutional distance, the value of distance, and alternative lenses for international business research. Among their topics are institutional overlap as a basis for international business, why psychic distance inhibits international buyer-supplier relationships, equity commitment in cross-border acquisitions: the influence of distance and organizational resources, when distance is good: an upper-echelon perspective on the role of distance in internationalization, and domestic alliance formation and the foreign divestment decisions of firms. -- Annotation ©2018 * (protoview.com) *Table of ContentsPrologue, Voyages of self-discovery: a reflection on four decades of research on expatriation and cross-cultural interactions; Tung, Rosalie Chapter 1, Distance in international business studies: conceptualization, costs and value; Verbeke, Alain; van Tulder, Rob and Puck, Jonas Chapter 2, Are we at a turning point for distance research in international business studies?; Dow, Douglas Chapter 3, Institutional overlap, access and contestation: how institutional diversity affects International Management; Maseland, Robbert Chapter 4, How do managers deviant perceptions of “cultural distance” relate to the performance of international SMEs?; Azar, Goudarz and Drogendijk, Rian Chapter 5, The concept of institutional and cultural compatibility; Halaszovich, Tilo Chapter 6, The direction of regulatory institutional distance and MNE’s subsidiary ownership strategy: re-examining theory and evidence in the case of emerging markets; Shirodkar, Vikrant and Konara. Emerald Publishing Limited Compliance in Multinational Corporations:

Book SynopsisOver the past two decades, the enforcement of anti-bribery, anti-money-laundering and anti-terrorism-financing regulations has become increasingly challenging for multinational corporations. Bribery and money laundering scandals have the potential to take down entire multinational corporations. Frequently, managers in charge of those firms end up facing criminal prosecution and civil lawsuits, and are not equipped with the formal legal training to prevent these phenomena. Compliance in Multinational Corporations explores the historical background of such phenomena as bribery, money laundering, and terrorism financing. Analysing the legal environment based upon international conventions, and including an empirical analysis of 100 expert interviews, it takes an innovative look at the perspectives of both criminals and compliance experts to provide a long-lasting guide for compliance experts. While traditional compliance and financial crime literature focuses on rules, regulations and prevention mechanisms, this book shows how intelligent criminals act. It offers practical advice and concrete guidelines that will address the most pre-eminent compliance challenges. The book will prove an essential resource for compliance managers, academics and professional educators who wish to equip themselves against the significant risks they face.Trade ReviewThe work of Teichmann and Sergi is timely in a world where globalized practices determine increasing complexity within the compliance of organizations. Asking relevant questions and bringing societal values forward are essential skills for this debate to surface successfully. This book contributes greatly to it. -- Mark EspositoSergi and Teichmann combine the perspectives of the academic and the practitioner in analysing key issues of financial crime that multinational corporations face today: bribery, money laundering, terrorism financing. How can corporations address them? How useful are sanctions and embargoes? The authors offer a compelling and innovative point of view by drawing on extensive empirical material: cases, experiences, experts’ analyses. This book is a must-read for compliance managers and anyone exposed to financial crime’s increasing global risks. -- Ernesto Gallo, PhDCompliance in Multinational Corporations: Business Risks in Bribery, Money Laundering, Terrorism Financing and Sanctions touches upon some of the most critical challenges of our day: preventing serious financial crime, enforcing pertinent regulatory framework, and ensuring ethical and effective behavior of multinational corporations. The authors show that preserving the law-abiding character of corporations requires multi-faceted efforts. They go going beyond the precepts of traditional compliance and financial crime literature, to search for innovative and practical solutions. Through an original empirical enterprise, they offer novel insights and practical guidance on how to address the most pressing challenges and dilemmas of modern society and its developmental aspirations: bribery, money laundering, and terrorism financing. -- Qerim Qerimi, Law and Development Research Group, University of Antwerp & Faculty of Law, University of PrishtinaI highly recommend the informative book Compliance in Multinational Corporations: Business Risks in Bribery, Money Laundering, Terrorism Financing and Sanctions by Fabian Teichmann and Bruno Sergi. With the prevailing tension among governments and players of the underground economy, the book is timely for those who are looking for answers on the cost and economics related to worldwide corruption, money laundering, and financial malpractices. The book provides a wealth of information to academic researchers, faculties teaching International finance, economics and business law, attorneys dealing with the multinational business environment, decision makers at national and state law enforcement agencies, and executives at offshore banking centers. Both authors are prominent specialists and distinguished scholars in their own right, and possess prolific track records in articulating the economics and legal issues related to cross-border corruption, bribery, money laundering, and terrorism. -- Musa Essayyad, PhDTeichmann, an attorney and public notary in Switzerland, and Sergi, an economist in the US, outline an approach for multinational organizations to eliminating corruption and bribery, focusing on systems that incentivize compliance with rules and regulations, rather than paying bribes. They consider how conventional incentive systems foster or prevent corruption in these corporations, how these systems should be adjusted to ensure more effective compliance with formal anti-bribery rules and multinational corporations, how incentive systems should be adjusted to foster anti-bribery whistleblowing, and the difficulties in introducing anti-bribery incentives. They discuss challenges and solutions to money laundering, how multinational corporations become trapped in terrorism financing, and the use of sanctions and embargoes and whether they are effective political tools. -- Annotation ©2018 * (protoview.com) *Through an analysis of the pertinent legal environment on the basis of international conventions, coupled with an empirical analysis of interviews with one hundred experts on the issues being discussed, the book takes an innovative look at the perspectives of both criminals and compliance experts to provide a long-lasting guide for compliance professionals...
