  • A-Z of Italian Motorcycle Manufacturers

The Crowood Press Ltd A-Z of Italian Motorcycle Manufacturers

Book SynopsisItalian motorcycles have a place in history - and many enthusiast's hearts - out of all proportion to the numbers that been built. If the number of motorcycles built by Italian manufacturers is small, the sheer number of Italian motorcycle factories will surprise readers. A-Z of Italian Motorcycle Manufacturers is the most complete directory of Italian motorcycles available today. In addition to covering the most famous Italian factories, this is a definitive guide to the marques that have had little or no coverage. Some might be familiar, while others are remembered for their racing achievements, and many will never had been heard of by most readers. • Motorcycles and Motorcycling in the USSR from

David & Charles Motorcycles and Motorcycling in the USSR from

    2 in stock

Book SynopsisThis book provides the first accessible English language account of motorcycles in the Soviet Union. Concentrating on the wartime and postwar period until 1990, prior to the dissolution of the USSR in 1991, it covers the motorcycles produced, and looks at the way in which they were used at home and exported abroad. Chapters cover wartime, models produced, the social character of Soviet era motorcycling, and wide-ranging sport. With planned rather than market-led production based around copies of pre-war German BMW and DKW models, the industry churned out hundreds of thousands of utilitarian and rugged machines that were very different from the more fashion-orientated machines produced in the West. These motorcycles went under the place names of the producing factories: Ishevsk, Kovrov, Moskva, Minsk and, of course, the large flat twins produced in Irbit and Kiev under the Ural and Dnepr names. With a strong emphasis on Soviet era illustrations, the book provides an insight into a life, based on idealism and ideology that has now passed. Photographs and images, many of them from private family collections, show Soviet bikes as well as popular imports Jawa from Czechoslovakia, and Pannonia from Hungary.Trade ReviewThe author has produced a very readable book giving a genuine insight into life on two wheels in the Soviet Union, which I enjoyed and recommend. Torque. Highly recommended!--Ian Kerr. This is a fascinating insight into the lives of ordinary citizens in the USSR ... A well researched and very interesting book.--Jonathan Hill - freelance. David & Charles The Triumph Bonneville Bible (59-88)

    5 in stock

Book SynopsisThis is a meticulously detailed history of the Triumph Bonneville: its antecedents, how it came about, and year-by-year production changes, with detailed technical specifications and contemporary road test reports showing how the Bonneville compared with its rivals. However, the history of the bike cannot be separated from the turbulent story of the company that built it. Triumph went from huge successes in the 1960s, when the Bonneville conquered North America, to troubled times in the early 1970s, leading to the formation of the workers co-operative that heroically kept the Bonneville alive for a further nine years. All this is covered here, plus details on how Triumph spares producer Les Harris took over production into the late ‘80s. Unlike other Bonneville books, this one also tells you how to buy one of these iconic bikes secondhand – all the pitfalls, what to look for, and what they are really like to live with. Whichever one you choose, it should be fast, agile and good looking ... on a twisty country road, there's nothing like a Bonnie, and with information on clubs, websites, spares, and the latest modifications and upgrades, this book will help you get the one you deserve. Featuring comprehensive appendices of facts, figures, contacts, technical specifiations (including correct colours for each year), engine/frame numbers, and road test performance figures, this is the definitive book of a bike that truly deserves the term ‘practical classic.'Table of Contents1 – Origins – the pre-Bonneville Triumphs 2 – Year by year:1959-62 Pre-unit 650s - T120 3 – Year by year: 1963-70 Unit 650s - T120 4 – Year by year: 1971-74 Oil-in-frame 650s – T120, T120R, T120RV 5 – Year by year:1973-77 Early Meriden 750s - T140V 6 – Year by year: 1978-83 Late Meriden 750s – T140E, TSS, TSX 7 – Year by year 1984-88 Harris 750s 8 – Buying a Bonneville 9 – Postcript: the Hinckley Bonneville

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisFrom the first race in 1922, the Ulster Grand Prix has been one of the most thrilling events in the international motorcycling calendar, attracting enormous crowds of spectators to watch the world’s great riders in action. Now, a century on, the UGP holds a special place in the hearts of fans here in Northern Ireland and across the world. A lifelong fan, Norman Windrum has been attending the UGP for seventy-five years and has an unmatched knowledge of the race and its history. In this new book, he vividly captures the excitement of the event, from Hubert Hassall’s win in the first race in 1922 to Tom Herron’s magnificent treble in 1978 and the domination of the Dunlop dynasty from the 1980s on. With over 100 photographs, alongside lively commentary and stories, and bringing together statistics about the race from across its entire history, this is the definitive account of one hundred years of the Ulster Grand Prix.Trade ReviewAs sports books go, this has to be one of the very best I have ever read and has over 100 pages packed with information, facts, figures, stats and pictures, which really chronicles Norman’s account of his favourite motorcycle road race. … If you bike fans want all of the facts then you’ll find them in the book. -- Liam Beckett * Sunday Life *The story of the UGP is told via Norman Windrum’s detailed and loving narrative enhanced by historical programme covers and many action photographs. The forty-five pages of statistics at the end are fascinating in themselves. The book … is a beautiful production. Anyone with even just an inkling of interest in motorcycle racing and Northern Irish sport generally would do themselves a favour and buy this book. -- Joe Cushnan * Dropped the Moon *Windrum writes engagingly about the shift from the Clady to the Dundrod circuit and about the heroes of the event – champions Mike Hailwood and John Surtees, Tom Herron and his 1978 triple victory, Ron Haslam, and the triumphant Dunlop dynasty, most of whom he’s seen in action – but also the organisational and sponsorship problems which have been constant. Even the supporters’ club rebelled one year. In some ways it’s not so much the safety aspect of racing between kerbs and lamp-posts that makes the event’s survival remarkable, precarious as it remains, as the relentlessly uphill organisational battles it has faced. -- Gordon Cruickshank * MotorSport Magazine *

  • The Moto Guzzi Story - 3rd Edition

David & Charles The Moto Guzzi Story - 3rd Edition

Book SynopsisThe story of Moto Guzzi is a story of survival. As one of Italy's oldest, and most legendary marques, Moto Guzzi had seen the height of success during the 1930s, and then the 1950s when they dominated 250 and 350cc Grand Prix racing. Their withdrawal from racing coincided with a period of stagnation until the company was sold to De Tomaso in 1973. During the 1970s the V7 Sport and Le Mans were at the forefront of the new superbike era, and later, with Dr John Wittner's help, embraced contemporary technology with the 1000cc Daytona. If one aspect characterises Moto Guzzi it is continuity. The great 500cc Falcone single ran from 1950 until 1976, and the V7, originally seeing the light of day in 1967, continued well into the 2010s. This continuity breeds loyalty, and Guzzi owners are a fiercely proud breed. Guzzis are not like other motorcycles, even Italian ones, and to qualify as a Guzzi owner requires a dedication and individuality that will be rewarded in a long term relationship.Trade ReviewThis latest edition brings us bang up to date with the inclusion of the V85 concept seen in Milan in 2017. This is not a model-by-model exposition of the marque but is presented in the form of chapters representing either an era or an iconic model from the Mandello factory. Thus, the author covers the early days, racing success, the V7 and derivatives, while the Le mans and the Dr John machines get a chapter each. There is a wealth of information here for anyone interested in Moto Guzzi. The financial state of the company as it went from owner to owner and the story of the V8 racer are especially interesting. I was surprised by how many historical nuggets were to be found and there are plenty of pictures. This would make a grand gift for anyone who has recently acquired a Guzzi. Ot treat yourself. - Gambalunga. It is an excellent read and bang up to date, covering the still to be released V85 Adventure bike and with features on models and production details from 1921 to 2018. Virtually every question you could have about Guzzi's is answered. Whatever model you own you will enjoy this book. -Guzzi Parlante. As with all of their updates of older marque histories they have taken the original work first published in 1998 and modernised it, improving pictures and text where necessary without destroying the original factual tome. Just short of 300 pages it brings the story up to date and include all of this year's models. All the history is documented in the well-laid out and heavily illustrated pages, including information on their racing success during the 1930s, and then the 1950s when they dominated 250 and 350cc Grand Prix racing. Given the time span between the various updates, I would recommend any Guzzi aficionado to get a copy of this latest work in order to be ready to celebrate their centennial in a few years' time. - Ian Kerr. This book hits the coffee table with a real thud, and in it Ian Falloon successfully takes on the ominous task of telling the entire story of Moto Guzzi from its beginnings in 1921 right up to the present day. - Old Bike Mart. With the help of Moto Guzzi staff, past and present, and foremost Guzzi expert Ivar de Gier, leading motorcycle historian Ian Falloon presents a comprehensive history. 1 in stock

Book SynopsisThe Veloce company is well regarded for producing some of the best single-cylinder motorcycles in race form and for private use. It is not so well-known that Veloce Ltd also produced some twin-cylinder machines: the Roarer, for racing, and the Model O for production. These bikes had many engineering features in common, such as twin contra-rotating crank shafts, inline cranks, shaft drive, and swing arm rear suspension. The supercharged Roarer was never raced because of the advent of war; this also put paid to the development of the Model O, which would have been the first so-called "Superbike." After the war, the Goodman family, owners of Veloce Ltd, focused on the production of a "Motorcycle for Everyman" - an idea that had featured in their production bikes since the formation of the company. They drew on the ideas embodied in the Roarer and the Model O to produce the twin cylinder LE range of motorcycles. These, however, were not well received by the motorcycling public, and many blame the production of the LE for the eventual demise of the company. The purpose of the book is to present, from an engineering perspective, an analysis of the Roarer and the Model O, comparing and contrasting the methods adopted by their designers to meet the different design specifications of these bikes, and to illustrate how the ideas developed in this exercise appeared in the LE range of motorcycles. The authors, Brian Agnew and Ivan Rhodes, met in the 1960s when Brian worked at Rolls-Royce Derby. They spent their weekends tinkering with motorcycles, and both have an intimate knowledge of the Velocette twins both from their time spent together and from their personal projects.Table of ContentsIntroduction: In the Beginning Part 1. Book Synopsishe largest supplier of proprietary motorcycle engines in the world, J. A. Prestwich & Co (aka JAP), decided to go racing with something unique in 1922.In a matter of weeks, a small team headed by Val Page, aided by Herbert Le Vack, had produced a radical new design ? the first British double-overhead-camshaft motorcycle racing engine. With this amazingly advanced engine fitted to a New Imperial frame, Le Vack stunned his competitors at the 1922 Isle of Man TT. From then on the engine and its successors proved invincible ? breaking numerous National and World Records over a four-year period. Yet the subsequent world recession, and a world war, consigned these achievements to memory and eventually bestowed upon them an almost mythological status. JAP?s engineering archives were discarded, and the handful of engines made might well have been lost too had it not been for a series of enthusiasts. In Le Vack?s Legacy, Brian Thorby traces the fortunes of the small number of JAP racing engines and parts that have wandered Europe for nearly a century. Much has been written and illustrated about JAP ohv Speedway and V-twin engines, but almost nothing about their unconventional double-overhead-camshaft brothers ? until now. This authoritative new account finally puts aside the myths and sets the record straight.

Book SynopsisPointless, risky, absurd. Yes, that is the beauty of it - absurdly determined to metamorphose themselves into a glossy photograph seen in a glossy magazine that caused a spark of desire within the tinder-dry kindling of their imagination. They were consumed with all that the photograph promised until that reality could be made theirs: to achieve all of the experience, the life's journey implied within it, to redefine their already long lives, to change themselves, to fast-track to the achievement of the decades of experience exemplified by those young adventurers in that glossy photograph in that glossy magazine. What an absurd notion. For no other reason, it had to be: three quickly became five guys on heritage motorcycles, hooking up with an ex-Special Forces operative and a combat zone photographer to make it seven for a safari across the top of Africa. From Spain to Tangier, they traversed the Riff, navigated the Atlas Mountains, circled Cirque du Jaffar, and rode through the Gorges du Ziz. Rough-riding across Morocco has never been so much fun. Wild camping on the way under star-spattered sky, across unforgiving terrain where luxury is a warm sleeping bag. In places where if you don't guard it you lose it, and where changing co-ordinates on a fast and furious basis makes good sense. Through oft sudden lows where the warmth of a Moroccan welcome exceeds the heat from black coffee, honeyed mint teas, or a meal from a hot tajine. Until dusty boots touch down on the sands of the Sahara at Erg Chebbi to witness a new dawn rise.Trade ReviewPress - Octane magazine, Bike magazine. Book SynopsisThe book is the fruit of hands-on experience gained in the workshop as well as knowledge gleaned over years of consulting books, manufacturers' manuals and specialist magazines by one of the leading technical journalists in the sector, Massimo Clarke. It is intended as an easy-to-read guide with clear, precise contents regarding the restoration of classic bikes, with attention being focussed not on pre-war models but those from the Sixties and Seventies, those on which we still work most frequently today. All aspects of restoration are dealt with special reference to mechanical work on the engines and the chassis components, those which enthusiasts can do themselves in their own garages, using tools that are easy to find at reasonable costs. The book is enhanced by an in-depth examination of the reassembly of the crankcase and two chapters dedicated to the final drive and the spark plugs. A guide of fundamental importance for those who want to "get their hands dirty" around their classic bikes.
