University of Iowa Press The Ghosts of NASCAR: The Harlan Boys and the

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisWho won the first Daytona 500? Fans still debate whether it was midwestern champion Johnny Beauchamp, declared the victor at the finish line, or longtime NASCAR driver Lee Petty, declared the official winner a few days after the race. The Ghosts of NASCAR puts the controversial finish under a microscope. Author John Havick interviewed scores of people, analysed film of the race, and pored over newspaper accounts of the event. He uses this information and his deep knowledge of the sport as it worked then to determine what probably happened. But he also tells a much bigger story: the story of how Johnny Beauchamp—and his Harlan, Iowa, compatriots, mechanic Dale Swanson and driver Tiny Lund—ended up in Florida driving in the 1959 Daytona race. The Ghosts of NASCAR details how the Harlan Boys turned to racing cars to have fun and to escape the limited opportunities for poor boys in rural southwestern Iowa. As auto racing became more popular and better organised in the 1950s, Swanson, Lund, and Beauchamp battled dozens of rivals and came to dominate the sport in the Midwest. By the later part of the decade, the three men were ready to take on the competition in the South’s growing NASCAR circuit. One of the top mechanics of the day, Swanson literally wrote the book on race cars at Chevrolet’s clandestine racing shop in Atlanta, Georgia, while Beauchamp and Lund proved themselves worthy competitors. It all came to a head on the brand-new Daytona track in 1959. The Harlan Boys’ long careers and midwestern racing in general have largely faded from memory. The Ghosts of NASCAR recaptures it all: how they negotiated the corners on dirt tracks and passed or spun out their opponents; how officials tore down cars after races to make sure they conformed to track rules; the mix of violence and camaraderie among fierce competitors; and the struggles to organise and regulate the sport. One of very few accounts of 1950s midwestern stock car racing, The Ghosts of NASCAR is told by a man who was there during the sport’s earliest days.

  • The Curse of the Indy 500: 1958's Tragic Legacy

Red Lightning Books The Curse of the Indy 500: 1958's Tragic Legacy

Book SynopsisOn May 30, 1958, thousands of racing fans poured into the infield at dawn to claim the best seats of the Indianapolis 500, unaware that they were going to witness one of the most notorious wrecks in racing history. Seconds after the green flag, a game of chicken spiraled out of control into a fiery 16-car pile-up that claimed the life of 29-year-old Indiana native and rising star Pat O'Connor. The other drivers escaped death, but the tragic 1958 Indy 500 seemed to leave its mark on them: the surviving drivers were hounded by accidents and terrible crashes, and most would die at tracks around the country. But the tragedy also prompted new regulations and safety precautions like roll bars that would ultimately save hundreds of lives. In The Curse of Indy 500: 1958's Tragic Legacy, veteran sportswriter Stan Sutton profiles the ill-fated race and the careers of the drivers involved, highlighting their lives in the dangerous world of auto racing.Trade Review"In all, the book offers an exciting story of the 1958 Indy 500 and a thought-provoking discussion of its aftermath." * Daily Journal *Table of ContentsAcknowledgments1. Chicago Review Press The Brown Bullet: Rajo Jack's Drive to Integrate

Book SynopsisThe powers-that-be in 1920s auto racing, namely the American Automobile Association’s Contest Board, barred everyone who wasn’t a white male from the sport. But Dewey Gatson, a black man who went by the name Rajo Jack, drove into the center of “outlaw” auto racing in California, refusing to let the pervasive racism of his day stop him from competing against entire fields of white drivers. In The Brown Bullet, journalist Bill Poehler uncovers the life of a long-forgotten trailblazer and the great lengths he took to even get on the track, showing ultimately how Rajo Jack proved to a generation that a black man could compete with some of the greatest white drivers of his era, winning some of the biggest races of the day.Trade Review"Poehler has done a fine job of researching the life of Rajo Jack, relating his determination and poise in the face of discrimination." - Library Journal"This excellent, very important book tells an inspirational tale." Book SynopsisThere's no other motor-racing circuit in Australia that holds the same magic as Bathurst's Mount Panorama. It's been home to the Australian Grand Prix, the Australian Motorcycle Grand Prix and TT, the Australian Hill Climb Championship, the Bathurst 1000 and now a round of the Intercontinental GT Challenge. To win on the Mountain is still the pinnacle of Australian motorsport achievement. As a motor-racing journalist for more than 40 years, John Smailes has had extraordinary access to the Mountain and to the leading motor-racing names who competed there, both past and present. When Jack Brabham celebrated his three world championships, when the Bathurst 1000 was born, when motorcycle greats Mick Doohan, Wayne Gardner, Warren Willing and Gregg Hansford tested themselves, John was there. He has reported on every victory by Peter Brock, Allan Moffat, Larry Perkins and Dick Johnson and he's covered the careers of contemporary stars Craig Lowndes, Jamie Whincup, Mark Skaife and the incredible father-and-son duo Jim and Steven Richards. In Mount Panorama, John Smailes gives us the definitive account of the Mountain, taking us into the pits, the workshops and the boardrooms to reveal the stories behind the circuit's conception and the champions and legendary races that have made it so famous. It's the Mountain brought to life.

Book SynopsisLiam Beckett is old school. One of Northern Ireland's best-loved sports pundits, few can touch him when it comes to talking about road racing and football. And he doesn't just talk the talk, he's walked the walk - he was Robert Dunlop's mechanic and mentor for almost twenty years and during his ten-year football career he was both player and manager. In this new book, Beckett talks frankly about what these sports mean to him, how they have changed and the challenges that lie ahead. Among other things, he talks passionately about his sporting heroes; relives the games he'll never forget; gets stuck into those who co-opt sport into religion or politics; and opens up about the loss of William Dunlop and his decision to take a break from road racing. Straight-talking, funny and generous, this is Liam Beckett - telling it like it is!
