Bloomsbury Publishing PLC British Luxury Cars of the 1950s and ’60s

    2 in stock

Book SynopsisIn the 1950s and 1960s, luxury car buyers, from government ministers to captains of industry, almost invariably bought British. These were stately, dignified, and grand vehicles, with many featuring leather interiors and wood trim. Unfortunately, that market has now largely disappeared and, with it, so have the car-makers themselves. This new book covers cars in the over-3-litre class from the biggest names in British luxury motoring including Alvis, Daimler, and Lagonda, and high-end models from Austin, Rover, and Jaguar. It examines the features and characteristics of these classic cars, as well as explaining why they fell from prominence in the 1970s. Replete with beautiful photography throughout, this book is a loving portrait of the British luxury car, a dearly missed saloon defeated by foreign imports.Table of ContentsIntroduction The Pinnacle: Rolls-Royce and Bentley The Old-established Names: Daimler and Armstrong Siddeley The Volume Producers: Humber and Rover The Sporting Dimension: Alvis, Lagonda and Jaguar The Great Pretenders: BMC Further Reading Places to Visit Index

  • Allard: The Complete Story

The Crowood Press Ltd Allard: The Complete Story

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisThe remarkable story of everything Sydney Herbert Allard achieved in motor sport and motor car manufacture is framed in an up-to-date commentary co-authored by his own son. This is a tribute unswayed by legend, but based on the facts and achievements of his eponymous company. With contributions from the Allard Owners' Club and Allard Register, this book contains painstaking research of Allard history from 1929 to the present day, including previously unpublished material. Just under 2,000 Allards were built, and approximately 510 are believed to remain on the road or known to be under -restoration. More await discovery - even as this book was being written, one of Sydney's long-lost 1930s 'Allard Specials' has been found after years being forgotten. Other topics covered in this remarkable book include: car-by-car engineering and design details; unseen ideas and projects; the history of the Allard marque in motor sport and the Allard story in the USA. Finally, it features the Allard Owner's Club, Allard Register, members and their cars.Trade ReviewIt is an involved yet fascinating story, well served by this new book, whose authors, Sydney’s younger son Alan and motoring journalist Lance Cole have produced an encyclopaedic work encompassing the life and exploits of an ambitious, talented, innovative yet also modest individual. At least 500 Allards of the 1900 originally made are known to exist many remain in active road or racing service, especially in the US where most were sold. A fine, especially well-written work, an absolute must for Allards fans and one which deserves prominence in any motoring enthusiast’s library. -- Kieron Fennelly * Guild of Motoring Writer’s newsletter. *This new release, co-written by Sydney Allard’s son, Alan, and with the support of the revived Allard Motor Company, surely jumps straight to the top of the list as the definitive history of Allard. It’s depth, at 240 pages, is impressive, as is the access to primary sources gained through the involvement of the Allard family, which combined gives insights into the company that haven’t seen the light of day before. Never before seen sketches of Sydney’s models are particularly fascinating. The book is a must-have for Allard fans, and should be considered by anyone interested in the post-war UK car industry. -- Charlie Calderwood * Classic Car Weekly *A £40 hardback numbering fewer than 250 pages has an awful lot of work to do to win over this cynical and grizzled hack. Luckily it is off to a flying start by having as its subject the marque sired by one of my favourite British motoring polymaths, Sydney Herbert Allard. Allard - The Complete Story - is Book of the Month for October 2021. -- Octane Staff reviewer * Octane Magazine *

  • John Haynes Biography: The man behind the manuals

Haynes Publishing Group John Haynes Biography: The man behind the manuals

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisJohn Haynes - The man behind the manuals., This fascinating and inspiring biography of John H Haynes – the man behind Haynes Manuals – looks 'under the bonnet' at his extraordinary life, and his legacy to the motoring world. This is the story of how one man's vision and enthusiasm gave a small enterprise in rural Somerset a global footprint., The author, Ned Temko, has spent many hours with the Haynes family, uncovering the rich and varied life that passionate motoring enthusiast John Haynes led. The story begins with John's childhood in Ceylon and his school days – when as a young entrepreneur he sowed the seeds for what would become the iconic Haynes car-repair manuals – to his time as a young RAF officer, and then as the driving force behind the growth of the iconic Haynes brand and the Haynes International Motor Museum., What makes John's story especially compelling is that the idea for his car Owners' Workshop Manuals didn't emerge fully formed. It wasn't a product of business school, or consumer focus groups. Just as the roots of Steve Jobs's Apple Mac can be traced to his personal urge to build the most perfect personal computer he could imagine, Haynes's journey began when, as a teenaged schoolboy, he was dead set on figuring out how to turn the remains of an old Austin he'd found in a scrap yard into a fully working sports car. The simple booklet he produced about building this 750 Special was the spark that would eventually result in the building of a global brand. This biography will appeal not only to motoring enthusiasts, but a wider audience who will be intrigued by the story of the Haynes family and the business dynamics - exploring the evolution of a global, yet truly British company and brand, led and overseen by John Haynes for 59 years., Author: Ned Temko began his journalistic career in 1975, in post-revolutionary Portugal. After a brief posting in Brussels, he was based in Beirut, Moscow, Jerusalem and Johannesburg for the American newspaper The Christian Science Monitor before being transferred to London, where he has lived and worked since., He was editor at the Jewish Chronicle for 15 years, during which it won unprecedented national recognition. In 2005, he joined The Observer as its Chief Political Correspondent. Since 2008, while continuing to make broadcast appearances as an analyst and commentator on the BBC and Sky, he has ghosted and edited a number of political memoirs and business books. He is also the author of To Win or To Die, a biography of the former Israeli Prime Minister, Menachem Begin, and writes a regular international-affairs column for the Monitor.

David & Charles Bugatti - The 8-Cylinder Touring Cars 1920-34:

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisBugatti - The 8-cylinder Touring Cars 1920-34 is a detailed study of the medium sized touring cars in the extensive range built by Bugatti during the fifteen years following World War I. Aspects of design and development are considered together with pictures of components and chassis commencing with the Type 28 and culminating with the Type 49. These cars represented the bulk of production and typify the Bugatti style and design, which was the basis of the company's unique standing in the field of automobile engineering.Over 150 different cars are depicted via 200 principally contemporary photographs, many of which have not been published before. The works of many different coachbuilders, throughout Europe, built upon these chassis are illustrated together with tables showing their market position compared with other makes and models, which were competitors.A study of the performance of these cars in competition is included together with a survey of the fall and rise in values over eight decades. The book represents an important addition to the series already produced by Veloce covering models Type 40, Types 46/50 and Types 57/57S. The royalties pass to the Bugatti Trust, a foundation dedicated to the study of the works of Ettore Bugatti and the furtherance of aesthetics in engineering design.Trade ReviewAn interesting book The Bugatti Review; Veloce too the good initiative to re-offer the book a=on the Bugatti 8-cylinder types in its Classic Reprint Series. This time with soft cover, though, with more than 200 pictures and drawings. A must for those who would like to know more about the La Marque's successful touring cars!- Autoliefhebbers; Veloce's softback reprint is well illustrated with contemporary and recent images. The former are especially engaging, with some bodywork designs being from the Voisin school of form over function, and others almost the frumpy. Most, however, were pleasingly elegant and lacking the thuggishness of so many same-era Bentleys. As an introduction, it fulfils the role more than adequately. - Classic Car Weekly. Owners and Bugattists who really want everything from their brand will buy this. - Klassiek & Techniek. This delightful book is a pictorial history of the post WW1 8 cylinder touring cars that were the most successful Bugatti models until the advent of the Type 57. What makes the book so interesting ate the numbers period photographs that allow us to se the unique coachwork used on these 8 cylinder touring cars. Not much has been written on these important cars, and the 2550 produced of these models accounts for one third of the approximately 7830 Bugattis made. This is another of Veloce Publishings quality automotive books that is very reasonably priced and should be added to every Bugatti enthusiasts collection. – Pur Sang.

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisIn May 1935, twenty-two-year-old Max Reisch and nineteen-year-old Helmuth Hahmann set out in a small motor car to find a land route from India to China. Their journey across Asia took them from Haifa to Tokyo. In this lively account, the author regales us with one story after another, struck with wonder or struggling against disaster in countries which deeply concern us today: Iraq with its oilfields, ancient Iran in the throes of modernisation, proud Afghanistan, and British India with its stunning variety of civilisation. Before the building of the Burma Road, driving from India to southern China meant sinking over the axles in mud on forest tracks and crossing torrents on rickety ferryboats. It also meant encounters with strange and fascinating peoples and places. With war already on the horizon, Reisch and Hahmann completed their round-the-world trip via Japan and the United States, arriving back in Vienna in December 1936.Originally written by Max Reisch in German, this brand new English translation by Alison Falls captures all the excitement of the journey, and features fascinating historical photos of the journey from the Reisch archives.Trade ReviewMax Reisch's story telling is detailed and his style is an easy read, conversational and witty, aided no doubt with brilliant translation by Alison Falls. She brings the German text to an English audience, ensuring it remained free-flowing and exciting. This journey certainly was incredible and totally absorbing 80 years on; fully capturing the essence of adventure with pre-war cultures (many of which have disappeared) all enjoyed from the seat of a small Austrian motor car. A real `Boys Own' adventure featuring two young men who took a camera and drive around the world. - Grant Ford, Freelance. Reisch and his travelling companion, 19-year old Helmuth Hahmann, took the (literally and metaphorically) rough with the smooth along the way, and their approach to the locals was clearly one of respect and interest. That approach is explained thourghout the book and today's trustafarian travellers could do well to take note. Numerous visits to collect visas, source fuel, repair the car, and be feted at numerous soirees add to the story's flavour, making this far, far more than just a travelogue. Plaudits should be given not only to Reisch, whose enthusiasm brought the journey to fruition, but to translator Alison Falls, who has managed to preserve the trip's flavour without the stilted prose too many translated books suffer from. The result is an uplifting read ideal for both those with wanderlust, and those with an interest in cars. - on-magazine.co.uk. The book, An Incredible Journey: The Lost World of the 1930s Circled by Two Men in One Small Car, captures all the excitement of the journey including crossing torrents on rickety ferryboats, sinking over the axles on forest tracks and encountering strange and fascinating people and places. The enthralling text is backed up by a wealth of fascinating historical photographs taken during the adventure. The book will hold the attention of the reader as they discover a very different world of that of today. - Irish Vintage Scene. First published in Austria in 1984, this story of a remarkable overland journey is now available in English in a 288-pages softcover book. With its very good selection of black and white photos of people and places they came across, this is a fascinating account of a true motoring adventure! - Classic Driver Monthly. The 288-page paperback, with lots of great black and white photos, is a terrific adventure story and fun read, and worth a spot in the library of any classic car enthusiast. - Classic MGa wonderful book ... • An Austin Anthology

David & Charles An Austin Anthology

    2 in stock

Book SynopsisAn entertaining collection of true stories that feature just a few of the products manufactured by the Austin Motor Company from 1906 until the outbreak of the Second World War, including the people who helped to make them, those who drove them, and even those who flew them. Although the history of the Austin Seven and Taxicabs have been covered before in much greater detail elsewhere, you will find within these pages the stories of many other Austin creations: the Austin 12/6 which could be won by smoking Kensitas cigarettes; the Austin 20 which competed in the 1914 Austrian Alpine Trial; the remarkable racing car named `Pobble' which went on to serve as an ambulance during the First World War, and the Australian couple who, in 1926, decided to drive their Austin Twelve right around Australia. The Music Hall artist, George Clarke, who performed on stage with his Austin Seven, and the `Austin Unity Song,' a recording of which was presented to guests at the Company's Annual dinner, are just two more fascinating stories which go to make up this Austin Anthology.Trade ReviewLovers of motoring history, especially when imparted in such a charming manner, will adore this little hardback book. In a mere 112pp, it tells an Austin fan's most engaging shirt stories about products emerging from the lines at Longbridge, Birmingham, the sometime home to the British car brand once owned by Herbert Austin. In a timeline that covers the origins of the company in 1905, up to the end of the Greta War and a little bit beyond, the tales of local murder, the bi plane compact enough to park in a domestic garage, the Austin Twelve that lapped Australia in 1926 and just what did happen to pensioned off taxi cabs are covered in cheery details, complete with humorous recollections and intriguing conclusions. It exceptionally well written and accompanied by a wealth of monochrome plates and period illustrations. It is not intended to be a history book, although much of its content is historically relevant. There is as much local detail, as international intrigue and it is not a model by model encyclopaedia of Austin but it does provide a valuable insight to the British firm's enterprise at an early stage of its existence. It is one of those books that is as easy to put aside, as it is to pick up and read, but you will come back to it, because of its sheer readability. - Iain P W Robertson. As a reader I have an interest in Pre War cars and owning an Austin Seven, Austin is of particular interest. James; new book is a well written selection of some of the less known history surrounding Austin, some of the history I was aware of, but the book cleared up some of the detail for me. The book not only covers the automotive side of Austin but also covers some of the side history around the people and other forms of their production such as planes. The book features a number of photos which have not been seen for some time and help to bring the history alive, along with the authors notes which as a reader I found informative and in some cases amusing. Well worth reading for anyone interested in Austin or Pre War Cars. – Dorset Austin 7 Club Magazine. James Stringer's little book is packed with tales documenting those early days if Austin history and is bound to provide enjoyable reading for those with a penchant for an altogether more leisurely era of motoring. – Speedscene.Table of Contents1. Book SynopsisThe Datsun Z Sports car is the best selling sports coupe in the world. Most people have been touched by one at some point in their lives. You may have owned one when they were new and regretted selling it. Maybe you remember your friends' Zs, and always longed for one but thought the task to find a good 240Z too difficult. This book will give you the knowledge and confidence to go out there and find your Z. With advice on finding, assessing, and buying a Datsun 240Z, including a unique scoring system to evaluate a potential purchase, as well as tips on buying at auction, checking the paperwork and much more, this book is THE essential guide.Trade ReviewIt's hard to believe that Veloce has only just got around to publishing one of its long-running series of buyer's guides on the 240Z But that's probably a reflection of how the Datsun has transformed from being an unappreciated Japanese throwaway to a bona fide classic, over the past decade or so. Newly has clearly been interested in these cars far longer than that, however, with his expertise in trim levels and so on being particularly impressive. This is a must-buy if you are looking to get a 240Z as your next classic. - Classic Car Weekly. This book does have lots of inside information on what to look for when choosing a Datsun 240Z, some history and specification details. Author Jon Newlyn knows his Zs; he was instrumental in setting up the Classic Z Register, become Chairman in 1998 and remains so today. His book really does cover the bits you need to know what searching for a 240Z. If you're serious in your search - for a potentially rally base, or even a road car, investing in this book to get proper knowledge is a very small price to pay if you luck-in to that perfect car for you. - IRDC Quattro. This Essential Buyer's Guide is a little different from most in that it only covers one models, across a fairly short production run (1969-'73). That means it's able to go into far greater depth than many of these broad-brush volumes, from its history to a highly detailed, hour-long evaluation of a potential purchase. An invaluable companion for any buyer. – Classic & Sports Car.

Book SynopsisThe story of Ford's original, home-grown small cars, the Mustang II and Pinto. Follow their progress through a difficult decade when Henry took on the imports, battled bureaucracy and gave America the economy and sports luxury subcompacts they wanted. This book details the successful design, building and sale of these small American Fords that faced domestic and foreign rivals. Mustang II and Pinto went through many permutations, appearance and performance packages - options that have helped the cars become collectible classics, and are prime examples of the decade the pony car survived. Going beyond stock standard were the customizers and racers that pushed the cars and their designs to the limit. Mustang II and Pinto graced enthusiast car magazine covers, and became stars in TV and films. They were small cars that made a big impact, and kept the Mustang galloping. Marc Cranswick draws on his lifelong passion for iconic American cars and this book delivers another unique insight into these models. His other books include Ford Midsize Muscle - Fairlane, Torino & Ranchero; MOPAR Muscle - Barracuda, Dart & Valiant; and Pontiac Firebird - The Auto-Biography.Trade ReviewThe book is a must-read for anyone keen on US auto history - Classic Car Weekly. --- Marc Cranswick draws on his lifelong passion for iconic American cars and this book delivers another unique insight into these models - Mustang Round-up. --- You'll look at Mustang IIs and Pintos differently after reading this--Classic Cars. --- This book was a wonderfully nostalgic look at the automotive experience of the 1970s. Book SynopsisChevrolet was Number One in the sales race. If you needed a car, chances are Chevrolet made it. However, in 1964 there arose a problem. Some guy at Ford came up with a car called the Mustang, maybe you've heard of it? But don't worry, Chevrolet had a solution called the Camaro. In racing, where you are on lap one, isn't nearly as important as your position when the checkered flag falls. By 1981, Camaro was so far in front of Mustang, Henry needed binoculars to see the Z28's taillights! Camaro was part of the speed shop scene, modified by the most famous names of the muscle car era. In racing, Chevrolet's pony left no stone unturned, inside and outside America. With the fuel crisis, insurance, and inflation, America sought a new kind of coupe. The Bowtie boys even outsold Mustang, with that Z28 having the upper hand in the Chevrolet versus Ford rivalry. Chevrolet's dedicated coupe even outfoxed Ford's sedan based Mustang. If the Corvette is the King of American Sportscars, then 'The Hugger' must be the Prince of Ponies!Trade Reviewa well priced book, with a lot of detail - www.silhouet.com --- there's plenty for fans of American muscle to like - Auto Express --- This is an everything-you-need-to-know sort of book on the first two generations of the Chevrolet Camaro ... From the Tour de France, to production sports car racing, the SCCA Trans-Am series, regional and national A/Sedan competitions, and international and domestic sedan championships in Great Britain, Europe, Australia, and New Zealand, the Mustang has enjoyed a following like few other models.
