Book SynopsisThe aim of this book is to reconstruct at least in part the image of the German troops present in the Grenoble region in 1940 at the end of the campaign for France, but above all in 1943/44 following the Italian capitulation and during the operations against the Maquis forces in the Vercors region, until the end of summer 1944. It concerns mainly the land troops (Heer), especially the Gebirgsjäger, the air force troops (Luftwaffe mainly paratroopers and bomber aviation), but also the Police (Ordnungspolizei) and incidentally the customs. Although the actions and the heinous crimes these troops committed have been known about for a long time from the accounts and pertinent studies of the Resistance which distinguished itself in the region, the reality on the other hand is not widely known, mainly because of an almost total lack of photo sources for the period. Using soldiers’ personnel documents, German and French archives and also period objects, an attempt is made to reconstruct a part of that reality, going back through the chronology of the events, following the routes taken by the units engaged, the way they were made up, their officers, the soldiers themselves and especially their losses, and where all this happened within the context of the actions carried out in the area.

Book SynopsisLes Alliés s’étant rendus maîtres de toute l’Afrique du Nord en mai 1943, la mission des U-Boote en Méditerranée change. Désormais, ils doivent protéger la « forteresse Europe » face aux futurs débarquements alliés. Cinq sous-marins partent contre le débarquement allié en Sicile en juillet 1943, qui n’est cependant pas stoppé. Dans les arsenaux de Toulon et de Pola, les sous-marins reçoivent une nouvelle double-plateforme à l’arrière du kiosque afin d’augmenter leur armement antiaérien contre les avions, avec 8 canons de 20 mm. En septembre 1943, six commandants chevronnés appareillent pour tenter de stopper le débarquement allié à Salerne, des succès sont enregistrés. L’utilisation de torpilles acoustiques à partir de novembre leur permet également de couler davantage de navires de guerre ennemis. En décembre, les travaux de construction d’une base sous-marine à Marseille sont stoppés par un bombardement massif... Début 1944, les sous-marins de la Grande Bleue luttent contre les navires ravitaillant la tête de pont alliée d’Anzio, une 17e Croix de Chevalier « méditerranéenne » est décernée. Le 16 mai 1944, un 62e U-Boot passe encore le détroit de Gibraltar, ce sera le dernier renfort... Les submersibles, à découvert dans le port de Toulon en attente d’un schnorchel, sont progressivement mis hors service par des bombardements américains… Un seul appareille de Toulon face à l’armada alliée réunie pour le débarquement de Provence le 15 août. Trois U-Boote, équipés du schnorchel et réfugiés en Méditerranée orientale, survivent encore jusqu’en septembre 1944…

Book SynopsisÉtalée sur trois années, de 1943 à 1946, l'épuration dite sauvage a fait une petite centaine de victimes en Normandie. Cette petite centaine est à confronter avec l'épuration légale réalisée entre 1944 et 1947 : 39 sont fusillés après avoir été condamnés à mort par une cour de justice. Dès 1943 certains résistants ne pouvaient attendre la restauration de la République et commençaient à éliminer des collaborateurs qu'ils jugeaient dangereux pour la Résistance. Décidée hors de tout cadre légal ou parfois après un simulacre de jugement, l'épuration extra-judiciaire s'exerçait rapidement et avec violence, prenant un aspect exutoire à l'exemple de la tonte des femmes. En Normandie, l'épuration dite sauvage fut relativement modérée, le souhait des nouveaux gouvernants français étant d'éviter à tout prix une guerre civile entre les Français.

Ils n'étaient pas tous destinés à devenir des amis, et ils le devinrent même s'ils n'avaient pas tous suivi le même chemin, mais ils avaient tous le même but : le rétablissement, dans l'honneur, de la splendeur passée de leur Patrie. De nombreux ouvrages ont déjà rapporté leurs exploits, mais ils méritent que leur mémoire soit encore et encore célébrée, et portée comme exemple pour les générations futures pour faire comprendre comment la France pays vaincu, bafoué, martyrisé a pu, grâce à une poignée d'entre eux - 96 exactement - en quatre ans, se rasseoir au banc des grandes nations en montrant au Monde que la France combattait sur tous les fronts. Il suffit parfois de l'ardeur d'une poignée d'hommes au combat pour convaincre et forcer l'admiration de certains - Staline en l'occurrence. C'est le portrait d'une quinzaine d'entre eux qui est brossé dans ces pages ainsi qu'une description abondamment illustrée par des profils couleurs de leurs «montures» : les chasseurs Yakovlev, choisis sans doute parce que leur moteur était une évolution du moteur français Hispano-Suiza 12Y français. L'auteur, ancien président de l'aéro-club de Caen, lui-même organisateur de meetings aériens du Souvenir a très bien connu le général Risso, qui fut directeur des Meetings Nationaux dans les années 70 puis, plus tard, quand il venait en Normandie, de temps en temps pour des commémorations. Il a construit plusieurs saynètes pour le musée des Andelys et a été invité le 20 juin 1999 à la cérémonie suivie du banquet à l'issue duquel le général Risso, en compagnie du Commandant Lorillon, a déclaré que faute d'adhérents, il se voyait contraint de mettre fin à l'association des Anciens du Normandie-Niemen 39-45. Il a déclaré que désormais leur épopée appartenait à l'Histoire. Le général Risso nous a quitté le 24 novembre 2005 et le commandant Lorillon le 17 février 2013. Il restait alors deux survivants des pilotes du Normandie de la Seconde Guerre mondiale : Jean Sauvage et Gaël Taburet. Jean Sauvage est décédé le 22 août 2014 et Gaël Taburet le 10 février 2017. Ce jour-là, avec sa disparition, une page de gloire de l'Armée de l'Air a été tournée. Ces 96 héros appartiennent désormais à l'Histoire. François Robinard a recueilli les souvenirs de cinq d'entre eux, sauvés par l'histoire, principalement ceux du Général Risso. Ils constituent la base de cet ouvrage. This book provides a portrait of fifteen pilots and is illustrated with colour profiles of their planes, the Soviet “Yak” fighters. Becoming operational in 1943 the squadron were a formidable military unit battling alongside the Soviets on the Eastern Front. The author, former president of the Caen flying club, and an organiser of Memorial airshows, knew pilot General Risso personally. Text in French.

Die Darstellung des KZ-Arztes Peter Hofer in Eugen Kogons SS-Staat offenbart eine weitere Sicht auf die NS-Zeit und zeigt die Notwendigkeit quellenkritischer Lektüre auch von Berichten ehemaliger KZ-Häftlinge. Die bisherige Dekonstruktion dieser das Bild der Konzentrationslager prägenden Publikation wird hier fortgesetzt, zugleich werden Forschungsdesiderata der KZ-Geschichte deutlich. The analysis of both diaries of young adults evacuated to the countryside during the war (Kinderlandverschickung) and members of Nazi youth organizations shows considerable discrepancies between the ideological principles of the correct presentation of Nazism and real text production. The portrayal of Peter Hofer, concentration camp doctor in Eugen Kogon's SS-Staat (The Theory and Practice of Hell), not only reveals a further perspective of the Nazi era but also the necessity of a source-critical reading, even of reports of former concentration camp prisoners. The previous deconstruction of this publication, which shaped the image of the concentration camps, is continued here, while research desiderata of the concentration camp history become clear. The changing views of former Nazis on the denazification efforts in Austria in the 1950s, between relief strategies, self-victimisation and demands, give insights in Nazi value systems in the Second Republic through the fatal integration into the Austrian victim collective.

Book SynopsisOnce the East African Campaign was concluded, some of the SAAF Fighter Squadrons, operating in Ethiopia and Sudan, moved north to Egypt to partake in the campaign in Palestine and the Desert War. 1 Squadron operated Hawker Hurricanes, while 2 Squadron operated the American built P-40 Tomahawks. 4 Squadron also transisioned to Egypt and soon joined 2 Squadron, flying the Curtiss P-40 Tomahawk. These two units were also joined by 5 Squadron, which had been formed and trained in the Union of South Africa. All three these units would eventually fly different marks of the P-40 Kittyhawk towards the end of the campaign. The ferocity of the aerial campaign over the North African desert and coastal plains can be illustrated by facts such as the numbers of fighter aircraft involved. The three SAAF Squadrons alone operated at least around 275 Tomahawks, that the author had been able to indentify. This was followed by a similar number of Kittyhawk Mk. I and Kittyhawk Mk. II aircraft. The SAAF would also operate more than 160 Kittyhawk Mk. II and Mk. IV fighters in the late stages of this campaign and the follow-up campaign in Italy. The different SAAF squadrons that eventually operated Hurricanes, also operated well in excess of 200 Hurricanes of different models during their time in North Africa. This volume covers the combat history of these fighter squadrons during the campaign, as well as the colors and markings of their aircraft. Primary sources, such as Squadron War Diaries, Pilot Logbooks, Personal Diaries, Aircraft Movement Cards, Medical and Incident Reports, Combat Reports and Supplementary reports, were used in the preparation of the text contained herein. This volume contains 88 pages, 20 full-color plates and 95 b&wphotos, indicating the people and aircraft operated by these squadrons. This volume will be followed by a third volume, tracing the onwards history of these squadrons as well as additional SAAF Fighter Squadrons during the final months of the campaign in North Africa. More volumes will follow, detailing the SAAF Fighter Squadron operations in Malta and the campaign in Sicily, Italy and the Balkans.

We want to compile in a didactic way but without academic intention, the information about this topic from various main sources such as Juan Arráez Cerdá, José Luis González Serrano, Carlos Caballero, Francisco Martínez Canales or Jorge Fernández-Coppel, trying to focus on the Spanish Air Force actions during the world conflict defending the Spanish neutrality and in the Blue Squadrons actions against the USSR. Book SynopsisThe German heavy tank Panzerkampfwagen VI Tiger is a vehicle known even to laymen. It was heavily armored and armed with a deadly 88 mm gun. Despite their legend, the Tigers were plagued by several technical problems, especially with propulsion, which often did not allow them to fully use their combat potential.The main motivator for designing the Pz.Kpfw. VI was eager to install a Flak 36 antiaircraft gun 36 caliber 88 in the turret. It was a weapon that could destroy Soviet tanks on long distances. In addition, it was necessary to build a tank able to withstand fire from the T-34/76 guns, which effectively eliminated the German medium tanks Pz.Kpfw. III and IV.A competition for a tank that fulfills these requirements was set, and in April 1942 the prototypes of Porshe and Henschel went for the final duel. After a series of tests, the tank developed by Henshel proved to be better. It received the designation Sd.Kfz. 181 Pz.Kpfw. VI Tiger Ausf. H1 and went into production at the plants in Kassel-Mittelfeld and Wegmann AG.The tank was plagued by many teething problems, and as a result, many subsequent construction changes were introduced in the course of production.
