Aurora Metro Publications The Emperor and the Nightingale
Book Synopsis• Neil Duffield's reworking of Hans Christian Andersen's classic fairytale, The Nightingale (1844), like his earlier adaptation of Andersen's The Snow Queen, brings a timeless classic into the twenty-first century. • With appeal to family audiences and more, Duffield's plays are performed regularly by schools and other amateur groups, as well receiving regular professional productions nationwide. Previous productions of this play, include The Dukes Theatre, Lancaster (2002); The Watermill Theatre, Newbury (2003); Midlands Arts Centre, Birmingham (2003). • Published to coincide with a new production of the play at Theatre by the Lake, Keswick.Trade Review“The story, adapted with his customary panache by Neil Duffield, remains loaded with all the essential elements of a child's fable. The importance of honesty, friendship, love, loyalty and trust. For two hours at least, we are taught that the song of the Nightingale might just be more essential than all of Earth's other treasures. Without turning all this delicate storytelling into anything resembling more seasonal fare, Joel Sams sails as close as he dares to being a panto villain. There is equally excellent support among the cast of eight actor musicians, whose skills stretch to playing an authentic Chinese stringed instrument, the guzheng.” British Theatre Guide, December 2016 “Set in ancient China, it tells the tale of Emperor Wu (Martin Sarreal) and2000-1 peasant girl Xiao (Sally Cheng) who head off together in search of the nightingale. Their adventure teaches them about the importance of friendship and all about life - the good bits and bad - full of energy, colour and creativity, intertwined with alluring music and lots of fun.” News & Star, December 2016 “Forrest's direction is typically tight, marshalling an eight-strong cast across a range of roles with a characteristic eye for humour. Johns' set impressively encompasses Beijing's Forbidden City as well as a range of rural location1000-1s. Composer Richard Atkinson supplies some beautifully atmospheric songs as well as directing a musically talented cast on a range of Chinese and western instruments. Jimmy Grimes' puppetry direction gives us a genuinely affecting nightingale, brought to life by the evocative vocals and puppetry skills of Amy Gardyne.” The Stage, December 2016

Book Synopsis• 2016 marks the 400th anniversary of the deaths of two of the world's most famous authors, William Shakespeare and Miguel de Cervantes. • Pioneering writer and director, Asa Palomera (“a powerhouse on Melbourne's independent theatre scene”): “I've tried to bring forth the sheer humanity of theirs, to present them as it were in their under wears, to show that the emotions we feel from their work are as human as the emotions they, in turn, experienced when they were alive.” • Productions of The Curious Lives of Shakespeare & Cervantes: Adam House Theatre (Edinburgh, 2010), Bloomsbury Theatre (London, 2010), Thai premiere (Bangkok Theatre Festival, 2014). THE EDINBURGH EVENING NEWS “this well-charted account of key events in each of their lives moves at a relentless pace ... dynamic narration...the audience never loses touch.” “The private lives of creative geniuses have long fascinated literary groupies in search of clues about where inspiration comes from... Asa Gim Palomera's restless piece of imagined history [treats] the two writers as equals with an awful lot in common, despite the age gap that nevertheless saw both men shuffle off this mortal coil within 11 days of each other.” Herald

Aurora Metro Publications Arabian Nights
Book SynopsisMay the legends of old be lessons to the people of our time, so that a man may see those things which befell others beside himself, and wonder. When Sheherazad is brought to the palace to be the Sultan's new bride, her very life depends upon her skill as a storyteller. She tells him tales of lost cities and buried treasure, of slave girls and robbers, of genies in bottles and evil sorcerors. But will it be enough to save her? The stories of the Arabian Nights originate from Persia, India and Arabia, and date back more than a thousand years. Neil Duffield has combined elements of many of them, keeping alive the excitement and humour to produce a show which transports the audience into a world of myth and legend where fantasy and reality can never be separated.Trade Review“Neil Duffield has the magic touch when it comes to dramatising myths and legends. He excels himself…with this comic and enchanting story…such exuberance. It teems with life and atmosphere. . . It is such a treat.” The Stage “[The] adaptation mixes ancient and modern and elements of several of the Tales.” The Stage “Like a Persian miniature in its case, this. . . is the quintessence of the Neil Duffield storytelling style. . . I recommend it to everyone.” The Sunday Times “Neil Duffield’s play is both robustly comic and serious in its consideration of smart women who know how to get the upper hand, brotherly relationships and greed... There may be fabulous treasures and genies in abundance, but there is no magic formula to this play: it is merely simple, straight-forward storytelling, done very well... Duffield has interwoven the familiar and less familiar so you get a real sense of a never-ending story, and he has the gift of combining the accessible and down to earth with the mythic in a single sentence. It is a small show, but one of transformations and pleasures constantly reminding us that when one story ends another begins.” The Guardian “a breath-taking 90 minutes with bags of pace and laughs a-plenty... The familiar story of Sherezade’s story-telling guile being used to outwit a blood-thirsty and misogynistic Sultan who takes wives for just one night before dispatching them with a sword in the morning, works on many levels... For an intimate seasonal show, it’s hard to imagine anything more satisfying than Arabian Nights.” Birmingham Post “Duffield’s...best yet. A good story, colourful and exciting, clearly told but with ingenious details. A treat.” The Times “Like a Persian miniature in its case, this delightful show is the quintessence of the Neil Duffield storytelling style... I recommend it to everyone.” The Sunday Times

Salamander Street Limited Silas Marner - The Play
Book SynopsisThis classic short novel gets a classic Mark Wheeller treatment. Ideal for students studying Edexcel GCSE English Literature to familiarise a class with the language of the novel and the story. He has created a beautifully taut and compelling script with immense skill. Karen Robson. Southern Daily Echo. Silas Marner, a member of a strict religious community, is wrongly accused of theft and is forced to move to the faraway village of Raveloe. A robbery at his new home leaves Marner without his hard earned gold and in the depths of depression. A mysterious, drug addicted woman is later found dead in the woods outside Marner’s cottage. That same night he thinks his gold has returned… but it proves to be something very different… Silas Marner was originally performed as a Promenade production. It offers opportunities for imaginative staging that has become the hallmark for all the best known Wheellerplays. It will serve as a great 'read around the class' script in English lessons because of its narrative style.

Salamander Street Limited 'I Lost My Virginity to Chopin's Nocturne in
Book SynopsisThe last night of a dysfunctional relationship precedes its one-night stand beginnings in this bittersweet heartbreak comedy. Tender, awkward and painfully funny, 'I Lost My Virginity to Chopin's Nocturne in B-Flat Minor' probes the murky line between devotion and destruction in a modern relationship. 'Chopin' is a bittersweet comedy which focuses in on the disparity between classes and how much of your self identity you would comprise for someone you love. Its fresh look at 'privilege', challenges how this is defined by both gender and upbringing, highlighting darker elements of toxic masculinity and the unhealthy nature of a dependent relationship. The piece explores a modern relationship being pulled apart by the divides of the class system and treads a murky line between devotion and destruction. It explores the politics of both the middle class and the working class, pitting them against each other to interrogate privilege, the gender divide and stereotypes. ‘ a delightful slice of relationship hell’ - Christopher Brett Bailey ‘A terrific two-hander. I’d prescribe this show for a bit of short sharp relationship counseling. - THE SCOTSMAN, * * * * ‘Sebastian Gardner is a truly gifted writer, and one you will want to keep an eye on if your interest is cutting edge theatre. Salamander Street Limited Swimming Pools
Book SynopsisBILINGUAL EDITION - EDICIÓN BILINGÜE ENGLISH Across a series of imagined swimming pools, arranged like the ascending levels of a retro video game, a sequence of intimate monologues are gently teased out, all balanced on a knife-edge between revelation and delirium. As our protagonists whisper their confessions through the voices and bodies of the four women onstage, the swimming pool itself is re-conceived as a kind of manmade utopia, a paradise in miniature, a site of ecstatic miracles and otherworldly beauty. Wrestling fearlessly with the particular demons of the early 21st century – rampant capitalism, toxic masculinity, internet boredom – Swimming Pools is a psychedelic new show about desire and melancholia and how we might live together in the blinding brightness of the future. This special bilingual, parallel-text edition of Swimming Pools also includes the full text for the unperformed work Paradise. Sleepwalk Collective is an award-winning live-art and experimental- theatre group creating fragile, nocturnal performances between the UK and Spain. Their shows include As The Flames Rose We Danced To The Sirens, The Sirens, Domestica, Kourtney Kardashian, and Psychodrama (with Christopher Brett Bailey). Sus piezas para teatros incluyen As The Flames Rose We Danced To The Sirens, The Sirens, Domestica, Kourtney Kardashian, y Psychodrama (con Christopher Brett Bailey). ‘Pocos creadores escénicos capturan la emoción vertiginosa y el terror existencial contemporáneo de forma tan cautivadora como Sleepwalk Collective’ - The Guardian

Salamander Street Limited Outlier
Book Synopsis“The sky was painfully big, but our worlds were small, our lives little. So when we found each other in the muddle of it all, that feeling of belonging was addictive.” Mal, Ama, Lewis and Oskar have grown up together; hedonistically charging through life – and any house party going – in rural Devon. They're railing against the stories that have been written for them as they stand at the precipice of adulthood. But all the space can be suffocating, and it’s tough sometimes – feeling so low in a place so beautiful. The powerful poetics of Malaika Kegode and soaring music of Bristol band Jakabol combine in this autobiographical gig-theatre show directed by Jenny Davies. Genre-defying and emotional, Outlier explores the impact of isolation, addiction and friendship on young people in the often-forgotten places. ★ ★ ★ ★ “the spirit of Kerouac reaches the West Country in superb drama” The Guardian ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ “Stark, touching, witty… it is nothing short of brilliant” Stage Talk “Outlier is raw, tender and funny but perhaps most of all: timely” Wheelie Stagey “A poetic gem perfect to use as stimulus for those aged 16 and above” Drama & Theatre CAST: 6 (3 female, 3 male) plus chorus

Salamander Street Limited Chatsky & Miser, Miser! Two Plays by Anthony
Book SynopsisAnthony Burgess was an energetic writer and composer, whose work for the stage is widely admired. In Two Plays, we see him tackling major monuments of French and Russian theatre: The Miser by Molière and Chatsky by Alexander Griboyedov. Miser, Miser! is a bold reworking of Molière’s classic comedy of 1668. Harpagon the miser is hoarding a pile of gold, which he has buried in his garden. As he tries to sell off his daughter, catch himself a beautiful young bride and outwit his scheming household of clever servants, the comedy of errors intensifies. Although the original French play is written in prose, Burgess remakes it in a mixture of verse and prose, in the style of his famous adaptation of Cyrano de Bergerac. This translation, discovered in the author’s archive, is the work of a writer at the height of his powers, reinventing Molière for modern audiences. Chatsky, subtitled ‘The Importance of Being Stupid’ is another verse comedy. The theme is that of the intellectual hero who rebels against the smug, philistine society in which he finds himself. First performed in 1833, Griboyedov’s play was so heavily cut by Russian censors that it was barely recognisable. The play is a virtuoso vehicle for male actors, and the source of many famous quotations. It is also notoriously difficult to translate. In Chatsky, Burgess remakes a classic Russian play in the spirit of Oscar Wilde. It is a great feast of language and invective. The complete texts of both plays are published here for the first time. Two Plays confirms Anthony Burgess’s reputation as a gifted writer for the stage, and as a translator of great wit and sophistication. MISER, MISER! Salamander Street Limited Candy
Book SynopsisDo you believe in love at first sight? Will didn’t. It was just something people said to sound romantic at weddings and that. Though he’d not felt it himself, he was pretty sure love itself was a thing, it just wasn’t, you know, the Cupid’s-arrow/heart-eyes kind of love. He didn’t even think he was missing out on anything; he was happy with his lot — a decent job, a good group of mates to get plastered with every weekend… even living with his mum and Great Aunt Toadface wasn’t that bad, really. He was fine. Until he sees Candy. One look at her and his whole world turns upside down. And no, Candy’s not her real name. Candy is his old schoolmate, dressed to the nines in thoroughly convincing drag. But to Will, she’s another person entirely. An epiphany. A revelation. A woman. Candy tells the story of Will as he attempts to make sense of his newfound feelings, and everything he thought he knew about himself is brought into question. It’s a one-man comedy-drama about identity, masculinity, mental health, sexuality and, most importantly, love. ★★★★★ 'Illuminating and entertaining' - Londontheatre1 ★★★★ ‘Evocative’ - The Scotsman ★★★★ ‘Storytelling in its finest form’ - Theatre Weekly ★★★★★ ’‘A gem. Salamander Street Limited Sorry We Didn't Die at Sea
Book SynopsisIt’s the near future and Europe has failed. A domino effect of nationalist, isolationist policies has left the continent’s economies on the brink of collapse, and citizens of the countries who closed their borders to immigrants are forced to flee across the seas. In a claustrophobic shipping container, three unnamed travellers place their lives at the mercy of a mysterious people-smuggler. Forced to exist on the brink between civility and chaos, they pray that they will reach their destination. And yet there are natural - and human - forces at work which are far beyond their control.
