Bloomsbury Publishing PLC German Troops in the American Revolution 1
Book SynopsisThis is a highly detailed study of the German auxiliary troops who fought for Britain in the American Revolutionary War and won a distinguished reputation on a host of battlefields.During the American Revolutionary War (177583), German auxiliary troops provided a vital element of the British war effort. Some 30,000 German troops served in North America, continuing a long-established relationship between Britain and various German principalities. These troops were widely referred to as mercenaries, implying that they sold their services individually, but they were in fact regular troops hired as a body by the British. Initially feared by the American population, the German troops came to be highly respected by their opponents. Their role in the fighting would inform the tactics and methods of a generation of German officers who returned to Europe after the war, many of whom went on to hold senior commands during the French Revolutionary and Napoleonic wars. The Table of ContentsIntroduction Recruitment and Organization The Hessian Corps Arrival in America Major Actions Involving Hessians Uniforms The Regiments Temporary Units Return from America Select Bibliography Plate Commentaries Index

Bloomsbury Publishing PLC The Normans in Italy 10161194
Book SynopsisPreceding and simultaneously with the conquest of England by Duke William, other ambitious and aggressive Norman noblemen (notably the Drengot, De Hauteville and Guiscard families) found it prudent to leave Normandy. At first taking mercenary employment with Lombard rulers then fighting the Byzantine Empire in southern Italy, many of these noblemen achieved great victories, acquired rich lands of their own, and perfected a feudal military system that lasted for 200 years. As news of the rich pickings to be had in the south spread in Normandy, they were joined by many other opportunists typically, younger sons who could not inherit lands at home. Steadily, these Norman noblemen fought their way to local power, at first in Apulia, then across the Adriatic in Albania, and finally in Muslim Sicily, defeating in the process the armies of Byzantium, the German ''Holy Roman Empire'', and Islamic regional rulers. Finally, in 1130, Roger II founded a unified kingdom incorporating southern ITable of ContentsIntroduction Chronology The Road to Power Organization Armour & Weapons Representative Battles Select Bibliography Plate Commentaries Index

Bloomsbury Publishing PLC Renaissance Armies in Italy 14501550
Book SynopsisThe Italian Renaissance marked a period of political and military turmoil. Many regional wars were fought between the states ruled by Milan, Venice, Genoa, Florence, the Papacy, Siena and Naples. For more than 50 years starting in 1494, major foreign powers also exploited these divisions to invade Italy; both France and Spain made temporary alliances with city states to further their ambitions, and early in the 16th century the Emperor Charles V sent armies from his German realms to support the Spanish. These wars coincided with the growth of disciplined infantry carrying not only polearms and crossbows but also handguns which proved capable of challenging the previously dominant armoured knights. The widespread use of mercenaries ushered in the early development of the ''pike and shot'' era that succeeded the ''High Middle Ages''. During this period costumes, armour and weapons varied greatly due to their national origins and to the evolution of tactics and technology.Table of ContentsIntroduction The Italian States The Armies: Duchy of Milan Republic of Venice Republic of Florence The Papal States Kingdom of Naples France Spain Holy Roman Empire Select Bibliography Plate Commentaries Index

Book SynopsisA complete illustrated study of the varied range of Italian colonial units who served in East and North Africa.Italy only unified as a nation in 1870 and was late, and therefore impatient, in the ''scramble'' for Africa. An initial foothold in Eritrea/Somalia, north-east Africa, led to a disastrous defeat in Ethiopia in 1896 at the Battle of Adwa, but Italian Somaliland was later consolidated on the west coast of the Red Sea. During 1911, Italy also invaded Libya, securing the coast, however fighting continued throughout World War I and only ended in the early 1930s. A number of native colonial regiments were raised in both Italian East Africa and Libya (in the latter, even a pioneering paratroop unit), of which most fought sturdily for Italy against the Allies in 194043. These units had particularly colourful uniforms and insignia. Another small guard unit also served in the Italian concession at Tientsin, China in 19021943. Book SynopsisSmall men, with big egos and moustaches, the hussars of Napoleon's army wore some of the most flamboyant and stylish uniforms of the epoch. In this book, the uniforms of the seventeen regiments of hussars are discussed in detail by renowned historian Paul L. Dawson, along with the dress of their brethren in the thirty-two regiments of Chasseurs à cheval, with an emphasis on the highly elaborate dress of the trumpeters.Having been granted access to over 1,000 archive boxes, held in the Service Historique de l'Armée de Terre in Paris and the Archives Nationales, the author is able to assesses how the wide ranging 1806 uniform regulations and the more famous Bardin regulations were adopted in practice. This vast resource, as yet untapped by the majority of researchers and historians for understanding the Napoleonic era in general, provides detail never previously revealed to the general public. This is possible because every year a regiment would be inspected, and the condition of the unif

Book SynopsisDescribes how newly modernized Japan waged war against China in its first overseas campaign, marking its rapid transition into Asia''s leading military power only 30 years after emerging from centuries of feudalism. After the Meiji restoration of the Japanese imperial regime in 186877, modernization along Western lines of Japan''s industry, communications and land and naval forces advanced with remarkable speed and, by the 1890s, the rejuvenated nation was ready to flex its muscles overseas. The obvious opponent was the huge but medieval Chinese Empire, and the obvious arena for war was Korea, a nearby Chinese protectorate that Japan had long coveted. Pen & Sword Books Ltd Royal Flying Corps Kitbag: Aircrew Uniforms and
Book SynopsisThe Royal Flying Corps was formed by Royal Warrant on 13 April 1912, and came into being a month later when the Air Battalion was absorbed into the Military Wing of the new Corps in May. In the days following the outbreak of war in 1914, the programme for mobilization of the RFC was, in the main, successfully carried out. The first aircraft set out across the Channel on the morning of 13 August, taking off from Dover at 06.25 hours. The first pilot to land in France was Lieutenant H.D. Harvey-Kelly of No.2 Squadron. In due course, all four of the initial RFC squadrons deployed to the Western Front were ready for operations. They represented, noted the Official Historian of the RFC, the first organized national [air] force to fly to a war overseas'. As the Great War raged, the developments in military aviation were profound, not only in terms of aerial warfare but, as this book reveals, the uniforms and equipment the aircrew used. All the objects that a Royal Flying Corps pilot or airman was issued with for sorties over the Western Front during the First World War are explored in this book in high-definition colour photographs, detailing everything from the differing flying clothing, to headgear, personal weapons, gloves, goggles and early life preservers. Each item is fully described, and its purpose and use explained. Fly with the Royal Aircraft Factory B.E.2s and Sopwith Camels over the trenches and see what the RFC aircrew wore as they took on their German foe in what were the formative years of military aviation.

Curiously little-known considering its scale and longevity, the struggle between Iran and Iraq was primarily fought along the 1,458km border in a series of battles which, despite both sides being armed with modern small arms, armour and aircraft, often degenerated into attritional struggles reminiscent of World War I. Following the Anglo-French failure at the Munich Conference in March 1938 to prevent a Nazi take-over of Bohemia-Moravia (modern Czech Republic/Czechia), many frustrated Czech and Slovak soldiers sided with Allied forces and fought alongside their armies first in Poland, then in France, and finally from Britain. Using depictions of relevant uniforms and equipment plus photos of the troops in action, military uniformology expert Nigel Thomas explains how the Czech Army was organized and how it fought alongside Allied forces in the Middle East and at Normandy. He describes the involvement of free Czech agents operating from Britain in Operation Anthropoid, the assassination of Nazi governor Reinhard Heydrich in occupied Bohemia-Moravia, and the part Czech soldiers played in mutinies in both Italy and Prague against German occupation which ultimately helped to secure a final Allied victory.Table of Contents(subject to confirmation) INTRODUCTION THE RISE AND FALL OF CZECHOSLOVAKIA – Czechoslovak armed forces: 28 Oct 1918–1 Mar 1920 – The little entente – The death of Czechoslovakia – State defence guard – Sudeten German organizations CZECHOSLOVAK ARMY ORGANIZATION: 10 SEP 1930–30 SEP 1938 – Higher formations – Infantry – Mobile forces – Artillery – Engineers – Air force – Services CZECHOSLOVAK UNIFORMS AND INSIGNIA: 10 SEP 1930 – 30 SEP 1938 CZECHOSLOVAK ARMY RANK INSIGNIA: 16 DEC 1927 – 11 MAY 1945 CZECHOSLOVAK ARMY BRANCH AND UNIT DISTINCTIONS: 1 JAN 1930 – 15 MAR 1939 FIGHTING ABROAD – Czech and Slovak legion – French Army – Middle East – Far East – Great Britain – Eastern Front – Czechoslovak air forces – Bohemia–Moravia Protectorate Government Army RESISTANCE ORGANIZATIONS – Special operations executive – Operation Anthropoid CONTINUING RESISTANCE – The battle for Prague SELECT BIBLIOGRAPHY PLATE COMMENTARIES INDEX

Book SynopsisDrawn from authentic sources by the artist Charles James Lyall, one of the classic English uniform artists at the beginning of the 20thcentury. In 1894 Lyall launched a series of uniform plates on the armies at Waterloo in 1815. Lyall compiled series of numerous uniform prints of British, Indian and various European armies and epochs. His works can be found in the large uniform collections such as the Anne S. K. Brown Collection, USA. This volume contains a description of the 16 June 1815 Battle of Ligny that was fought at the same time as the Battle of Quatre Bras (see Volume 2 of the series). At Ligny, the Prussian forces met French units under the direct command Napoleon, who wanted to exploit the strategic advantage of the separation of the Prussians from Wellington’s forces. Two maps from William Siborne’s rare atlas facilitate understanding of the course of the Battle of Ligny. Like in the two previous volumes, the plates by the 19th century artist Charles Lyall are critiqued based on current knowledge of the uniforms, equipment and weapons. Book SynopsisThe restoration of the Meiji Imperial dynasty in 1868, after 250 years of the Tokugawa Shogunate, decisively opened Japan to the outside world and the monarchy embraced modernization, including the creation of a new Westernized army. However, this modernization process was resisted by the traditional Samurai feudal nobility, leading to a series of battles. The first clash between the two cultures came swiftly. During the Boshin War of 186869, a French military adviser, Jules Brunet, changed sides to join the insurgents. They won several engagements before the final crushing of the rebel Ezo Republic. After this point, the Imperial Army continued to modernize along French lines, and social changes began to impoverish Samurai noblemen, who lost their social and political role and their associated privileges. During 1876, the powerful Satsuma Domain, around Kagoshima in south-west Kyushu, became a focus for discontent. Bloomsbury Publishing PLC Belgian WaffenSS Legions Brigades 19411944
Book SynopsisAt the start of the German occupation of Belgium in May 1940, Flemish recruits from northern Belgium considered by the Nazis to be ''Germanic'' were accepted individually into Waffen-SS units. After Hitler''s invasion of the USSR in June 1941, additional recruits from the French-speaking south (Wallonia) were also drafted in. Both communities formed volunteer ''Legions'' to fight (according to Goebbels'' propaganda machine) ''for European civilization against the Bolshevik threat''. The Flemish Legion was incorporated into the Waffen-SS and the Walloon Legion into the German Army. Both served on the Russian Front in 1942-43. The Walloon Legion was then transferred into the Waffen-SS (the decorated Walloon officer, Leon Degrelle, became a publicized ''poster boy'' for foreign SS volunteers). Both Legions were then redesignated as SS Assault Brigades and, from then onwards, saw extremely heavy fighting in the Ukraine and on the Baltic front. Bloomsbury Publishing PLC Armies of the ItalianTurkish War
Book SynopsisThis title chronicles and illustrates Italy''s conquest of Libya during the Italian-Turkish War, which involved not only the armies and navies of both sides, but also a number of tribal insurgents, and had major implications for both World Wars.In the early 1900s, the decaying Ottoman Turkish Empire had lost some of its Balkan territories, but still nominally ruled all of North Africa between British Egypt in the east and French Algeria in the west. Libya had fertile coastal territory, and was the last North African (almost, the last African) region not yet conquered by a European colonialist power. Italy was a young country, ambitious for colonies, but had been defeated in Ethiopia in the 1890s. The Italian government of Giovanni Giolitti was keen to overwrite the memory of that failure, and to gain a strategic grip over the central Mediterranean by seizing Libya, just across the narrows from Sicily. The Italian expeditionary force that landed in October 1911 Trade ReviewThis is a useful introduction to this relatively little known war, with a good balance between the normal examination of the armies and the rather more useful narrative of events. * HistoryofWar *Table of ContentsHistorical Background Forces in the Field Chronology Operations The Aegean Front Conclusion & Consequences The Armies Select Bibliography Plate Commentaries Index

Kagero Oficyna Wydawnicza The 38m Toldi Light Tank
Book SynopsisThe 38M Toldi light tank, contrary to its designation, went into service in 1940. At the time it was the state of art armoured weaponry of the Hungarian Army. Before that time the Army had its WW1 style armoured trains, armoured cars and the tiny Italian FIAT Ansaldo tankettes. The 38M Toldi light tank and its Swedish origin the L-60 were the same class as the German Pz. II, the Polish 7TP, the Soviet T-40 and T-60 light tanks, designated for reconnaissance and liaison role. However, at the beginning of the war it was the only tracked armoured vehicles of the Hungarians to fight the Red Army in 1941. The 38M Toldi light tank was also the first armoured vehicle produced by the Hungarian War Industry during the war.Trade ReviewMujzer’s text is well supported with many monochrome photographs, covering every inch of the tank. That and the technical drawings and colour plates, will make modelers and wargamers happy. * Wargames Illustrated 11/05/2021 *
